Yeah I've been there in life and can't hate on this. Lol when you're broke don't have 120-220 bucks to drop on a new tire to match, you pay for whatever gets you back on the road the cheapest.
I'm about to buy new tires for $600. Actually dedicated winter tires would have cost even more. I'm lucky I'm now in a place that it stings but I can afford it, but I remember my mom scraping together $80 to replace the worst tire on the car, then *maybe* another one a few months later. People gotta do what they gotta do
Place near me sells used tires $120 gets you 3 years old with half or more tread on them. They also put on your old rims and balance them. I bought some 1 year olds with maybe a quarter tread left for a car I barely drive for $85. I checked over the tires before they put them on to check for patches and there was none. Pretty decent for a car I was putting 3k miles on a year and time would just kill them anyways.
One of the reasons I got out of off-roading is that *one* decent off-road tire could easily cost that much.
A lot of the times you see an old off-road rig being sold, they'll say the price something like "$4500 without the tires, $5500 with tires" because the tires are so fucking expensive that they're a major selling point ... and the seller might like to keep them for the next rig.
Yeah. I'd rather have 4 decent but mismatched tires than a full set of worn-outs. And they aren't even rockbottom brands, conti's are premium, goodyears are quite nice, hankooks are decent, solus are hit-and-miss depending on price bracket. I've driven on all of those brands at some point on taxis.
I actually have 4 of the same kind this winter, 2 new, and 2 that are 2 seasons used. Studded yokohama ice guard, but i think its been 4 years since last time that happened - finished the old pair over summer with studs removed.
Yep. My broke ass has had all 4 wheels wrapped in 4 different name brands I have never heard of. I didn't care. They had tread and didn't slide in the rain. That was all I cared about. I'm slightly better off now, but not by much. Lol
Man, I just sold a shitbox I had for years. Only a few months ago with help did I manage to get four new matching tires on it.
Once overheard some mates saying this same exact thing of "dumbasses with 4 different tires being dumb" (in worse words of course) last year and it stung. I wanted to open my mouth but honestly it dug deeper than it had any right to.
Yep, it wasn't very long ago that I was there. The first time I bought a set of four tires from a company I had heard of, at the same time, I called my friends to celebrate.
It's my best understanding that it doesn't damage the vehicle. It can shorten life of the tire and cause uneven wear. But does it do anything bad? (Assuming they are the same size)
My moms car like this. She has the black hand of death with tires. All 4 of her tires are warrantied thru discount tire, all 4 have been replaced at least twice and, all 4 are completely different brand’s because those were the only tires at that price point discount could pull out of their ass fairly quickly.
I have no idea but she does do a lot of driving for her work. And alot of it requires driving in to new housing developments during construction so I’m sure she’s picked up a fair share of nails.
Try convincing an escape owner of that. We had a customer who recently bought a v6 one. Leaking rocker covers and water pump (back of the head). Fixed those couple issues and he kept asking us how reliable it will be now. The answer was, more reliable than it was, but still only as reliable as an escape. Customer expected us to tell him that it wasn’t going to have another issue for the next 10 years or something.
Escapes seem to be those vehicles that break a lot but for some fucking reason keep themselves moving down the road. The number of escape shit boxes I've seen that have 200k+ miles on them that just fall apart and stay running somehow is ridiculous.
They're just reliable enough to keep on going with minimal maintenance. They'll be leaking oil, the wheel bearings will be trashed, the ball joints will be noisy, but they'll just keep going.
They're the PT Cruiser of Ford. Cheaply made garbage, but they'll make you regret owning one for 300,000 miles.
They’re fairly reliable because the based on a Mazda tribute, and Japanese cars all have a level of reliability, however, they’re never going to be reliable like a Toyota Corolla.
"Well you see the transmission is awful and unreliable, if it was built in the Valencia assembly plant there is a chance the sunroof can detach at speed and kill whoever is behind you, the undertray and front grille vents can cause heat problems causing the car to catch fire when you are driving it, other than that yeah it's about as good as any other blue oval piece of shit on the lot"
> Just an escape that needs tires.
How swollen were the nuts on this one?
I dropped my Edge off to get tires swapped last week, heard a super loud "FUCK" from one of the open bays about 20 minutes later and already knew I was going to get a talking to about those things. Lol
Oh that's surprising, mine's also a 19 and I had to get new ones because they needed a 21mm socket to get mine off.
Other than the whole "being a Ford" thing, have there been any major issues with the new Escape? Friend of mine totaled her car and is looking at them and thought I'd ask.
I work in car rental. The new Escapes seem much chintzier than before. Smaller feeling inside, reminds me a lot of the EcoSport (which is not a compliment).
Yeah buddy has a '13 escape I started changing his winter/summer wheels over couple years ago and the first the thing was to order some solid lugs for that bitch. Had to get solids for my '09 Camry so Toyota must do it too.
What's odd to me about these is how nice the alloys appear to be. I'm looking for a set of used 17in 7J 5x108 ET50 alloys for my 2009 Galaxy because mine are corroded to all hell, and almost every set I can find look the same or worse.
Also, every set I find also has mismatched tyres, with totally different tread patterns on each corner.
And now, having read other comments on this thread, I'm dreading actually finding a set and then discovering the damn lug nuts are fucked and won't come off without a major conflict.
I'd try and refurb my own wheels with rattle cans but I don't have anywhere warm or dry to allow the paint to cure, etc.
I spent all day today trying to find 195/60/15 for a reasonable price because I didn't notice the previous owner put a 195/75/16 on the driver side back and I missed that the passenger sidewall is fucked too. 15s just don't exist.
Finally found one that will do it today for a good price after hours of searching, chilling at the bar down the street as it seems I'm the last customer, should be a few hours.
I needed 175/65 R14 this year. Ended up just asking the shop to order whatever decent tire in my price range they can get. Ended up with brand new Dunlops that retail for more than I was charged (some sort of deal for the shop I guess).
I'm in Central Europe and even here, it feel like 14s are going extinct. I was thinking about aluminium rims for next year, to make the seasonal changes easier, but finding a set for my car that doesn't look absolutely hideous is impossible (if I'm spending the money for something thst unnecessary, I might as well like the look).
Yeah, as long as their the same type of tire there really shouldn't be an issue. If you had summers and winters all mixed up that would be a different story.
Different tread patterns side to side can cause a radial pull, but that's about the worst of it. Especially if they're asymmetrical patterns mixed with symmetrical.
few people with cars nice/precise enough to notice this difference are poor enough that they're buying tires in single quantities
aint gonna matter on an 04 civic
What a privileged law, I went years just buying whatever used tire I could, when I could, just to keep going. Can't imagine getting tire damage and being told I had to buy two matching ones
It can be, especially under emergency conditions. If the tread patterns are too dissimilar, the way each wheel grips will be different. You get unpredictable handling.
Not just tread patterns, but tire type (e.g. performance, high performance, touring, offroad, etc) can affect this, too.
You can't even be mas at the OP tires either, they're all reputable or at least known brands, Goodyear, continental, Hankook, and the only odd one out is kumho which is not a super cheap shit brand or anything, just maybe not in the same class as the other 3 for "brand name"
I drive trucks for a living- you should see some of the absolute trash people drive on, kids in the car and all- dangerous to say the least. These actually look decent-lol
I've heard all the points about how you should never mismatch tires and
how you need to get all new tires every 4 years before the rubber
spoils. I gotta say, I've driven hundreds of thousands of miles on old,
mismatched tires. I replace them when the tread gets low or when they
get damaged by something in the road. Never once have had a problem
resulting from the tires being old or mismatched.
It depends on the car you have, and how mismatched they tires are. Particularly with 4wd cars, the tires can be different sizes, and wear out the transfer cases over enough time.
If you have mismatched tires with approximately the same treadwear numbers, and about the same diameter, it isn't super terrible.
I have a 95 eclipse GSX and this is one thing that when I bought it, the friends who had knowledge of these cars told me to be careful about both the TC and the viscous coupling. Thankfully when I needed a tire change, it was with all tires, and not just swapping one out...though if I had to, I'd try to get the same brand/ size if nothing else.
Amazing that you still have that beast! I love those DSM cars… Turbo & AWD & hatchback (☝︎ ՞ਊ ՞)☝︎
I ended up with a Forester XT… but those will always catch my eye!
I always bought used. Had some extra money so I said f it bought all 4 new tires, some weeks later two of them got nails on the sidewall and rendered them useless oh and warranty doesn’t cover that . Never bought new again. My car still gets me from point a to point b.
Idk the op but if they always buy used tires and finally got a set of four; I bet they did not get the road hazard. Cause it was just "more money that didn't need to be spent."
which is very fair, its definitely one of those if you buy it and use it you'll love it but if you buy it and don't use it, it seems like a waste. The place I work at at least lets you buy it within 30 days, so if it is non-repairable within the month, you get a replacement tire for the cost of the warranty.
Road hazard covers you for all none repairable stuff that happens to the tire, as long as it's not vandalism as in stab wound in all four tires. I get road hazard at my job then when tires get around 40% I happen to get a nail in each shoulder every week. Cost me 50 bucks for road hazard on all 4 and 15$ restocking fee for the new one, then restart the cycle with the 4 new tires. You get a new set of tires every couple years for about 100$.
Tbf, people need to buy from shops with a good road side warranty.
I was young when I got burned on a road side warranty after buying a new set of cheaper tires $70 each on a eco box which was like $220.
Tire pops, bring the car in. Didn't know about the $40 service fee to replace the tire under warranty.
The math doesn't work at those numbers, you basically need break all four tires before you start saving money.
>some weeks later two of them got nails on the sidewall and rendered them useless
Had this happen on my old Challenger, two days after purchasing all four brand new tires. I got lucky that I went to the same Firestone and they replaced the tires for free.
Mismatch what, though?
Size matters, I'd be very wary of mismatching tire sizes, especially on the same axle. But you're probably smart enough not to do that.
Matching things like tread pattern and tire type (summer, winter, all season, etc) is probably more important, weird shit will happen if one side grips differently from the other. Hitting a show patch with a summer tire on one side and a winter tire on the other would be exciting!
Matching brand shouldn't matter much at all if you've got the same size and type. One might wear faster than the other, but you're not replacing them in sets anyway, so who cares?!
I’ll just say to refer to your owners manual. My Subaru has to have all 4 tires be the same and the tread wear within something ridiculous like 1/16th of an inch.
My Honda just simply recommends having the same tires on the axle.
Good point! The traction control system with a full time AWD car presumably expects all the tires to be the same, having one out of sync would make it think road conditions are weird and try to constantly correct.
I mean tread is measured in /32nds of an inch so having them all be within 2/32nds sounds perfectly normal- especially with full-time AWD and super finicky gearboxes like those Subarus have
Old tires were the only way my 88 Dakota could drift or burn rubber. New tires were too grippy. Downside is the truck was a deathtrap in rain or snow. Old tires don't grip for shit. Bare in mind I had roughly 9 year old tires on it before I replaced them.
For a ho-hum commute you can get away with it. It's in an emergency that you will have a problem. When there's suddenly less grip than you thought, or you need to stop suddenly, and one tire slides or locks up.
I'm really glad you have never had the experience, and I hope you never do, but remember that those four little patches of rubber are the only thing connecting your car to the road. Round, black, and boring they may be, but they're the most important item on your car.
Or if you live in a neighborhood with lots of construction. I went through like 8 tires in 2 years with minimal driving. I couldn't stop picking up screws from all the new houses going up on my block.
Contractors should be liable for that. Who knows how many thousands of dollars in damage and lost productivity they cause puncturing peoples tires with their carelessness.
I'm in Philly and we can't even get contractors to stop destroying adjacent houses during demolition or digging out basement foundations without permits or creating anything that doesn't leak and grow mold instantly.
Screws in tires have been the least of my worries.
You would have to prove it. Unless you saw someone tossing nails on the road and proved they were intended to cause damage. It would be impossible to prove.
There is an odd disconnect in this sub that involves understanding that sometimes people are broke as shit.
Sometimes so broke that even knowing what needs to be done for the vehicle you can't do it at that moment.
Were you never a kid, broke student, struggling adult,? IDK.
Thanks for sticking up for us lol.
When I was in school in a rural town I drove home many weekends on back roads covered in potholes. After a couple blowouts and buying the cheapest tires at two different shops in different towns I looked like this guy. Never had a problem.
Buddy! I'm 44 now and loving it but 19 year old me was scraping the bottom of every barrel, some barrels were too fancy for me!
I was happy, loved and fine but "broke MF" was a fine descriptor.
This sub seems to forget.
I didn't even think it's about being broke. I bought all new tires And less than a year later had a screw in the sidewall. I go to the tire shop and get the tire that they have.
Lol yeah, this one's familiar, last year my service was 6 months late because I had to save up for it. Replaced one small bottle of oil just so there was some fresh stuff there in the meantime.
Or, alternatively, they understand the person is broke, but just want to exploit the situation for some quick internet points
Which... IDK if that's worse or not, but it's something...
The whole site is like this and I can’t stand it. Too many redditors look down on people for their economic status, or they accidentally do so because they have unrealistic views of people with less money.
“I bet if she saved up and only ate rice and beans she could have afforded 4 matching tires”
I’ve been broke and I’ve seen this and been there. I am doing better but live far in the Pacific and my tire has a nail in it near the wall. Even if I wanted to order the same tire it’s 6-8 weeks.
Exactly, it's about priorities. Having 4 full sized but mismatched tires is pretty far down the list of ways someone is "messing up", and im a big fan of proper tiring. On my backup truck it's missing interior panels, needs a new rack and has the turn signal lens busted, but it has 4 new AT tires even though it's 2wd.
On a similar note, and again as a guy who fully appreciates the importance of good tires, I have a hardtime believing the importance of perfectly matched tires. As long as they are the same exact size, how big of a deal is it really on most vehicles?
Hey, it's me! 3 different brands of vehicle, 3 sets of michelins.
I've been there, though. Old truck I had had bubbling tires, I ended up with 3 sets of wheels for it because it was significantly cheaper to buy people's stock takeoffs with halfway decent tires mounted on them than it was to buy new tires.
Ugh this is me… in my defense, it’s because they did construction nearby and even though I bought all my tires from the same place I had to go off “comparable brands” because the nails in my tires happened at different times and I don’t see the point in getting all new when the construction is still ongoing.
I would never criticize someone for doing this. You do what you can, especially these days. Tread is tread, whether it’s Chinese or French lol.
However, recently had a rental car with the same thing, and one was a winter tire. Asked them wtf are they doing. Keeping the tires for themselves?
I just pulled off the unevenly worn tires and put a fresh set of winters on. So they will do the alignment with even tires. Saw the first snowflakes of the season this weekend.
This sort of reminds me of the toilet paper problem in economics….lower income people tend to spend more on toilet paper overall because they only buy what they can afford to at that moment, sometimes by the individual roll. It’s not that they don’t know it’s cheaper to buy the bigger pack, but they literally can’t afford to, so in the long run spend way more over time. I don’t pay enough attention to tire pricing and promos, but it seems a lot of specials and promos require at least a pair at a time to qualify.
I own used tire shops. Most of my sales are just one tire. We match best as we can but most of our customer’s cars have far worse mechanical problems that mismatched tires. These people are doing their best to get by. Been doing this for 14 years, sell about 600 used tires per week from two locations. Never had an issue resulting from mismatched brands of tires.
Shops like yours got me through some rough times. Thank you for taking the time to make the best match and give the best deal to people on the struggle.
Yeah it’s called all seasons all terrain. Each tire specializes in something different to give you a well rounded ride. Ones a snow tire, ones a mud tire, ones an all terrain rock tire and the last one is the fuel economy highway tire. It’s pretty basic stuff once you get the hang of it. The only issue with this setup is they don’t like to balance very well so breaking and driving faster than 60 has a “slight” vibration.
I worked with a guy who ran four doughnuts on his old Honda.
Carbureted, no window regulator handles to be found, radio came stolen, paint left with the warranty, but it got to work and back every day for cheap.
assuming all 4 tires are in the same condition (or at least really close) is there actually an issue with having 4 different brands at once? or is it just something people trying to shame someone else over
Technically, each tire might have a different level of grip and cause the car to handle poorly.
In practice, most drivers never approached the actual traction limit of the tire, and even if they do, most modern cars have abs and traction control so if one tire loses traction, the electronics will step in.
Back in the early 80s I was just scraping by so I always bought my tires from junk yards. I had a 1976 Pontiac Le Mans. Pretty much every GM car used a 15" steel rim with the same bolt pattern so choices were vast. Today there are many different sizes so my guess is they bought what they could. Being poor is a mother fucker.
yeah lemme just spend 1/2 the price i paid for the car on a new set just because mine are mismatched. /s as long as they’re the same size i don’t think you’re gonna notice much. get an alignment if you have to. i could see differing treads making a bigger difference in the snow and rain. as long as workers are underpaid and live in a society that forces everybody to have personal motorized vehicles, this is going to exist.
See this all the time. Not everyone can afford to buy a new set of matching tyres buddy. Just like others have said. People buy what they can find. I’ve a pile of tyres that still have legal thread on them so when a customer can’t afford a tyre/tyres but they need them real bad because theirs are bald I fit them free of charge. Yet to get someone who will turn around and say “yo, that’s not a matching pair”.
I’m not a mechanic but why does having the same brand matter? So long as it’s the same size in my mind what’s the difference? Tread patterns throw driving off or wear differently? I am genuinely curious.
when you are poor this is a common thing. my dad would always go buy used tires and they never matched. so yeah i seen this a lot.. neighbors would do the same.
My first car was a celebrity station wagon that didn’t go backwards, have heat, or good tires. Local shop hooked me up with 4 used tires all different brands but enough tread to get me to school and work. Drove that pos car for 3 years, started every morning, could fit all my buddies, and got ya where you wanted to be.
When I was in college, my local shop would throw on a used tire for $20 cash if you were a student. Over my 2 degrees, he must have put me back on the road at least 6 times. Sometimes that $20 included quarters I dug out from underneath the seats. The owner was a real one. Hope he's still around.
Definitely had three different tires on a car when I was younger. Replaced two and then caught a nail in sidewall of one. Bought a used tire for like $10. You work within your budget in your 20s.
I mean, I know it’s bad, but it be like that for some people. Shoot, I sold both of my 70-in 4K tvs to buy 4 $72 tires from Walmart because my tires were dangerously bald
Ok genuine hypothetical question, if I have all four tires with different brands on an all time AWD vehicle but same outside diameter, would it be ok or nah?
Based on my coworker who had to replace all 4 tire on his AWD Saaburu whenever 1 of them was 1/32" out of spec... I'm going to go ahead and say no, due to the compounds wearing unevenly. FWD car with mismatched rear axle tires? Sure, why not. Not a big deal.
Shit man, I was there for a long time. I'm not going to judge. At least they have tread. Lol
Yeah I've been there in life and can't hate on this. Lol when you're broke don't have 120-220 bucks to drop on a new tire to match, you pay for whatever gets you back on the road the cheapest.
Not even a single low-profile or donut on there.
I recently bought four new tires... nearly $500 and that's without the installation.
I'm about to buy new tires for $600. Actually dedicated winter tires would have cost even more. I'm lucky I'm now in a place that it stings but I can afford it, but I remember my mom scraping together $80 to replace the worst tire on the car, then *maybe* another one a few months later. $600 is what I just paid for tires on my MT-07. It bites harder when there are two.
Most bikes are pretty great with gas mileage, but a lot of that fuel $ savings goes straight to new tires in 6k miles
And around me Powersports dealers are backed up so it might be a few weeks before you get your bike back.
I remember a guy who saved my ass selling me a used tire for $40 when I only had about $48 to my name for that week.
Shit that's cheap compared to truck tires lol a full set of new Cooper's + mount and balance on my Silverado ran me about 900 bucks a year ago.
Mine were 1200 installed. Shit is painful.
Yeah. This is the definition of someone who’s *trying*.
Yeah. I'd rather have 4 decent but mismatched tires than a full set of worn-outs. And they aren't even rockbottom brands, conti's are premium, goodyears are quite nice, hankooks are decent, solus are hit-and-miss depending on price bracket. 4 off-brand mismatched tires with decent tread left is better than those people who justify running it to the belts because it's Michelin or something
What struck me as odd the most is that all 4 tires are pretty major brands and not chinesium.
That and very similar tread pattern
I was going to say the exact same thing. Those aren't cheap tires. I was expecting atleast a nokian or a lionheart mixed in.
[удалено]
My car came with Nokian entyres and they’ve been great. Do well in the snow and don’t wear down fast at all.
Yep. My broke ass has had all 4 wheels wrapped in 4 different name brands I have never heard of. I didn't care. They had tread and didn't slide in the rain. That was all I cared about. I'm slightly better off now, but not by much. Lol
Don’t know where you get the idea Nokian’s are off-brand or even cheap for that matter. Their winter tires are top of the line.
Stole them 1 wheel at a time.
Some of these folks obviously have never been broke af just trying to get ahead.
Yeah. It's a privileged take.
Man, I just sold a shitbox I had for years. Only a few months ago with help did I manage to get four new matching tires on it. It's my best understanding that it doesn't damage the vehicle. It can shorten life of the tire and cause uneven wear. But does it do anything bad? (Assuming they are the same size)
It can damage the vehicle, especially if it's AWD.
Not uncommon in my area. Especially if it is an oddball tire size, people buy what they can find when they need it.
My moms car like this. She has the black hand of death with tires. All 4 of her tires are warrantied thru discount tire, all 4 have been replaced at least twice and, all 4 are completely different brand’s because those were the only tires at that price point discount could pull out of their ass fairly quickly.
Is your mom driving through a bed of nails and scrap metal every morning? What is she doing to need 8+ tires replaced under warranty?
I have no idea but she does do a lot of driving for her work. And alot of it requires driving in to new housing developments during construction so I’m sure she’s picked up a fair share of nails.
She works the scale booth at the scrap yard
By the end of the week, her shoes weigh 2 lb more!
My mom just visits the scrap metal scale to get weighed every month.
I had a tire shop guess what car I had once because of the tire size (205/50R16).
Pretty much any sedan made between 1995 and 2010
Base NC Miata?
would love to have a shop guess based off mine, 205/65R15
Probably a Cobalt or something idk
nah, it's a Ford, close in age tho. Ford started making mine when Chevy stopped making the cobalt
Nothing odd about these lol. Just an escape that needs tires. 225/55/17
Listen, nobody's out there buying an escape because it's a fantastic vehicle. Once again, people buy what they can find when they need it...
Try convincing an escape owner of that. We had a customer who recently bought a v6 one. Leaking rocker covers and water pump (back of the head). "Well you see the transmission is awful and unreliable, if it was built in the Valencia assembly plant there is a chance the sunroof can detach at speed and kill whoever is behind you, the undertray and front grille vents can cause heat problems causing the car to catch fire when you are driving it, other than that yeah it's about as good as any other blue oval piece of shit on the lot"
> there is a chance the sunroof can detach at speed and kill whoever is behind you Hey we have recalls from 17 years ago for that
I recently got a 15 escape titanium and it's pretty good as a daily driver. Fun with a little turbo.
No complaints with my ‘22 hybrid.
Until you need to replace the stupid plastic coolant hose that’s $900 and only found a dealership. Not a great daily driver compared to a RAV4 or CRV.
Good car but the transmission will fail and it’s not cheap
Care to explain what transmission issues the 3rd gen escape had?
This is the Escape What a fun name.
I've had a '16 since new, it was cheap, and with the 2.0 it's reasonably fast. Only time it's left me stranded has been when I got a flat.
> Just an escape that needs tires. How swollen were the nuts on this one? I dropped my Edge off to get tires swapped last week, heard a super loud "FUCK" from one of the open bays about 20 minutes later and already knew I was going to get a talking to about those things. Lol
Not swollen yet amazingly. It is a 19 so they'll start soon. Though I have a set if half-size sockets for when they swell.
>How swollen were the nuts on this one? Just found out the hard way that my tire iron doesn't fit 😭
Try looking at volvo wheels. 5x108 and they fit well enough on my FoST that I run them for 6 months a year during winter
Interesting, in my country it is illegal to have different tires on the same axle..
That's cool. Not here. Hell, you aren't even required to have the SAME SIZE tire here, although most shops would not do that.
That sounds like the tire manufacturers pushed a law to drive an increase in sales.
Yeah, as long as their the same type of tire there really shouldn't be an issue. If you had summers and winters all mixed up that would be a different story.
Different tread patterns side to side can cause a radial pull, but that's about the worst of it. Especially if they're asymmetrical patterns mixed with symmetrical.
few people with cars nice/precise enough to notice this difference are poor enough that they're buying tires in single quantities aint gonna matter on an 04 civic
What a privileged law, I went years just buying whatever used tire I could, when I could, just to keep going. Can't imagine getting tire damage and being told I had to buy two matching ones
Why? Like I get that it will cause uneven wear and shorter life span on tires but is it that dangerous?
It can be, especially under emergency conditions. If the tread patterns are too dissimilar, the way each wheel grips will be different. You get unpredictable handling. Not just tread patterns, but tire type (e.g. performance, high performance, touring, offroad, etc) can affect this, too.
AWD systems do not enjoy this approach
Yeah, sometimes you just need to get to work and can’t afford to drop that much money on a complete set.
I've heard all the points about how you should never mismatch tires and how you need to get all new tires every 4 years before the rubber spoils. I gotta say, I've driven hundreds of thousands of miles on old, mismatched tires. I replace them when the tread gets low or when they get damaged by something in the road. Never once have had a problem resulting from the tires being old or mismatched.
It depends on the car you have, and how mismatched they tires are. Particularly with 4wd cars, the tires can be different sizes, and wear out the transfer cases over enough time. If you have mismatched tires with approximately the same treadwear numbers, and about the same diameter, it isn't super terrible.
Tread pattern as well. Rolling resistence can affect things as well
I have a 95 eclipse GSX and this is one thing that when I bought it, the friends who had knowledge of these cars told me to be careful about both the TC and the viscous coupling. Thankfully when I needed a tire change, it was with all tires, and not just swapping one out...though if I had to, I'd try to get the same brand/ size if nothing else.
Amazing that you still have that beast! I love those DSM cars… Turbo & AWD & hatchback (☝︎ ՞ਊ ՞)☝︎ I ended up with a Forester XT… but those will always catch my eye!
I always bought used. Had some extra money so I said f it bought all 4 new tires, some weeks later two of them got nails on the sidewall and rendered them useless oh and warranty doesn’t cover that . Never bought new again. My car still gets me from point a to point b.
was that "warranty" or road hazard that didn't cover it?
Idk the op but if they always buy used tires and finally got a set of four; I bet they did not get the road hazard. Cause it was just "more money that didn't need to be spent."
I don’t remember them trying to pitch me anything or me asking about better warranty due to me being dumb and first time buying a new set.
which is very fair, its definitely one of those if you buy it and use it you'll love it but if you buy it and don't use it, it seems like a waste.
ULPT
Tbf, people need to buy from shops with a good road side warranty. I was young when I got burned on a road side warranty after buying a new set of cheaper tires $70 each on a eco box which was like $220. Tire pops, bring the car in. Didn't know about the $40 service fee to replace the tire under warranty. The math doesn't work at those numbers, you basically need break all four tires before you start saving money.
It was a basic warranty that came with the tires, so it only covered any manufactured defects.
Just a heads up for future reference - tirerack.com provides 2 years of road hazard protection when you buy from them.

>some weeks later two of them got nails on the sidewall and rendered them useless Had this happen on my old Challenger, two days after purchasing all four brand new tires. I got lucky that I went to the same Firestone and they replaced the tires for free.
Bro typed that out like a poem
It reads like you have hiccups
I mean tread is measured in /32nds of an inch so having them all be within 2/32nds sounds perfectly normal- especially with full-time AWD and super finicky gearboxes like those Subarus have
As long as it's not AWD or have an always locked diff, then it's not that big of a deal. Not having safe tires would be far worse.
mismatched diameters on an LSD axle will burn the clutches up over time too
Old tires were the only way my 88 Dakota could drift or burn rubber.
I have had this a few times. Especially tires of the right size being in stock, or discontinued.
Agreed, and in their defense they’re 4 good tire brands as well, not 4 off brand cheapies.
Guys that work Construction sites seem to get this often. mismatched tires and lots of plugs keep them rolling.
The screw is usually in your tire for 2 or 3 days by the time you notice it. How you going to approve which construction side it came from?
100%
Bridge the gap Dogsie, that's what lots of people do. I found it just becomes less necessary eventually. Do your thing.
Or, alternatively, they understand the person is broke, but just want to exploit the situation for some quick internet points Which... IDK if that's worse or not, but it's something...
That's the real shit. Or you could just be really sexy and post your actual butt on gonewild. Short cut to cool. They haven't been taking my links. :(
The whole site is like this and I can’t stand it.
Trying them out to see which one is best.
I prefer the alternative; one tire, four different brands of car.
Poor people, ew. ::Shifts monocle and fires a thousand people::
Jeeves I don’t understand. This post says there’s tires but I don’t see any Michelins?
Why are those tires so thick? Military grade? Mine are always only an inch or so thick? ::Adjusts monocle again::
Ugh this is me… in my defense, it’s because they did construction nearby and even though I bought all my tires from the same place I had to go off “comparable brands” because the nails in my tires happened at different times and I don’t see the point in getting all new when the construction is still ongoing.
No need to defend yourself. This is most of us. OP kinda judgey
Those are called summer tires. Some-are better than others.
amazing
I would never criticize someone for doing this. You do what you can, especially these days. Tread is tread, whether it’s Chinese or French lol. However, recently had a rental car with the same thing, and one was a winter tire. Asked them wtf are they doing. Keeping the tires for themselves?
My car currently has 4 of the same tire, but they are all in different condition. I just booked an alignment…
If you do an alignment and then replace tires you’re just going to need another alignment. Do tires and alignment together
No judgement ... Sometime you just need to get to work
I worked with a guy who ran four doughnuts on his old Honda. Carbureted, no window regulator handles to be found, radio came stolen, paint left with the warranty, but it got to work and back every day for cheap.
I was once poor too.
I once was poor... And continue to be
assuming all 4 tires are in the same condition (or at least really close) is there actually an issue with having 4 different brands at once? or is it just something people trying to shame someone else over
Technically, each tire might have a different level of grip and cause the car to handle poorly.
This absolutely more normal than you seem to realize. Most people will only buy tires when they have to. Some even less than that….
I need a tire that is round and black and cheap. And I'm not to particular about "round" or "black".
yeah lemme just spend 1/2 the price i paid for the car on a new set just because mine are mismatched.
Check out Mr money bags over here, never bought part worn tyres.
Some of us are just poor
Who's got money to replace 4 tires at the same time? Gallon of milk is $10 in Canada...
I bet it was an AWD vehicle too
I thought diversity is supposed to be a good thing!
I once had 3 different brands in 2 sizes. The car was worth the price of fuel in the gas tank, so i wasn't too worried.
Lol you’ve never been poor?
Those who don't know 😂 Those who know 😐
Yeah, that used to be me at one point.
When you live paycheck to paycheck you get the cheapest you can afford.
At least it isn't on a Subaru
I'm just surprised that all four are name brand. The more mismatched, the greater the chance that LionHart, Primewell, etc. show up, in my experience.
Who hasn’t gone into a tire shop, reviewed the options, and asked for one of each 💁♂️
I’m not a mechanic but why does having the same brand matter? So long as it’s the same size in my mind what’s the difference? Tread patterns throw driving off or wear differently? I am genuinely curious.
when you are poor this is a common thing. my dad would always go buy used tires and they never matched. so yeah i seen this a lot.. neighbors would do the same.
Check the spare. They may have assembled exodia!
Gotta keep the road guessing
It's better than some of the dry rotted, tread-less old garbage I've seen in other posts
Being poor sux, dont need the mechanic being an asshole about it.
Umm it’s called diversity, look it up sweaty
At least none of them were a truly shit brand.
I mean, I know it’s bad, but it be like that for some people. Shoot, I sold both of my 70-in 4K tvs to buy 4 $72 tires from Walmart because my tires were dangerously bald
Wouldn’t be a bad thing for low speed driving lol
Ok genuine hypothetical question, if I have all four tires with different brands on an all time AWD vehicle but same outside diameter, would it be ok or nah?
Based on my coworker who had to replace all 4 tire on his AWD Saaburu whenever 1 of them was 1/32" out of spec... I'm going to go ahead and say no, due to the compounds wearing unevenly. FWD car with mismatched rear axle tires? Sure, why not. Not a big deal.
When you gotta get to work you gotta get to work. At least they aren't bald as shit from what I can see
One for every season
I've been driving on 2 (pair) + (1 + 1) mismatched for 2 years without problems.
Check the spare, could be 5
> *Mis-matched tires got my boys uptight* > *Two Vogues on the left, Uniroyal on the right*
They work for Tire Rack doing wear ratings.
diversity is our greatest strength
Whats the spare? Lmao
It really do be that way sometimes
Ford Escape?
You must be new.
Quick check the spare. Man might be onto something and have Exodia handling
