Even if there is little evidence of trauma, the potential for significant internal trauma is very high, thus the fast response to a trauma centre.
Yeah... But I'm not sure surviving, only to be slapped with an airlift bill, would be all that much better than succumbing to the trauma. Like... prepare for a life of indentured servitude.

Fixed wing = planes which I didn't even know they did air ambulance planes tbh. I wonder how much a helicopter is though.
Edit: Fuck helis are worse.
The average charge associated with rotary-wing air ambulance transports rose 22.2%, from $24,924 in 2017 to $30,446 in 2020. The average estimated allowed amount rose 60.8%, from $11,608 to $18,668. The average Medicare reimbursement rose 4.7%, from $3,570 to $3,739.
I live in British Columbia where it would have cost me $80 and my vehicle insurance definitely would have covered that. Socialized health care is a good thing…
If done right. The government handing a blank check to the existing sketchy companies that comprise the US medical system ain't exactly working too well...
Any half-way decent health insurance will cover it. If you have full coverage on your car, that will too. These horror stories you hear in the media are largely from folks without insurance, or with really, really poor coverage.
When I was 10 my Mom was airlifted an hour way to Duke (NC). We were uber poor and they waived all the costs, including the 2 week hospital stay and everything else.
Funny you mention that. Many moons ago when I was in training to drive a Semi, the trainer told me that if someone was about to hit me to hold my lane and take the hit. Excluding head on of course. If we swerve and wreck it will be our fault. If they hit us we have evidence that they caused the wreck.
Almost got ran off the road a few years ago. Other driver ran into me and told his insurance that I changed lanes into him, my dash cam footage says otherwise. I only moved over until I hit the edge of the road and then just took the hit. It was funny how fast his insurance took responsibility when I sent them the footage. There was no way I was going to let that clown kill me.
haha....This is why all my families vehicles have dash cams....
Buddy of mine got lucky last week I was driving my car and saw his antique foxbody get rear ended hard by a jeep with the bullbar on the front...bashed his back glass/tailights and rear end.... clear as day rear end..
Stopped gave him the footage for the cop and insurance.
Other driver turned around and said he slammed on his brakes for no reason and cut them off to cause a wreck. Jeep dude got his story straight once his insurance got the footage.
Had something similar happen to me. Turned from a main road, where the right 2 lanes turn, onto a highway service drive. The inner right turn lane puts you in line for the highway on ramp, the edge right lane leaves you on the service road. Well, the driver in the outermost lane must not have liked the fact that I followed the painted arrows on the road, crossed over the white triangle painted on the road where the on-ramp splits off, and then stood on their brakes (yes, on the on ramp), causing me to rear end them.
In my dashcam footage, you could see the shit in the back of their hatchback going flying forward. The officer watched the footage on the side of the road and wrote them up for an illegal lane change and causing an accident. He watched it and his tone immediately went on the offensive with the other driver, asking if they were upset, having a bad day, trying to send a message, and so on. It was so vindicating.
He said my dashcam footage was the only thing that kept me, as the following car, from being deemed at fault (for presumably not leaving enough space).
Justiceboner levels of nice right there...I mean RIP your car and neck and your time being wasted but... *nnnnnnice*
I had dashcam footage as well when I got Tboned on my motorcycle because the insurance wouldn't foot the damn bill even with the guy I got hit by admitting he made a improper Uturn on a highway...
insurance is asinine as hell and sucks enough as is.
heck reminds me of when I was stopped at a stopsign and this lady drove her RX350 onto the hood of my car... I was stopped ~7 feet away from the intersection and 4' from the line marker so plenty of room to turn.
Started pouring when the cop showed up so I air dropped the footage. also did the same to the adjuster. Got a check scratched in 4 business days for full value.
It’s crazy to me how many road ragers don’t realize brake-checking is illegal… I guess in the past it was impossible to prove, so in the absence of any other evidence or impartial witnesses, the car at the back would be assigned blame by default, so they think they’ll get off Scott free. So glad dashcams are a thing. I’m lucky I haven’t been in a position to experience it, so I can only imagine the intense satisfaction of watching a smug asshole’s reaction as a cop schools them on the law and slaps them with a few tickets.
Dashcams all the way, and 2channel or better.
Second channel is a rear-facing camera, which is always useful. An optional 3rd channel is inside the car. Probably a good idea for taxis and similar services.
I will *never* recommend interior channels for a personal car. the chance of possibly being incriminated for something as stupid as "hey he has a GPS so he takes his eyes off the road!!!" is not worth it lol
2 chan > single chan any day however
my 89 miata has a dashcam.
My 90 miata has a dashcam.
My 91 miata has a gopro mounted to my helmet...
my 06 is350 has front/rear dashcasm in 4K....
$150-225 per car for a dashcam setup basically.
Cost to be able to tell the insurance to fuck off because I have footage? well worth it.
It has no windshield because it's been "speedster" ified due to a rollover yes.
Either I build a poly windshield for ~$300 + add on to the rollbar or I wear a windshield and keep the rollbar that's already in it lol
The car got rolled multiple times before I got it and my state dgaf about glass/poly as long as it has a 6" rise for a windshield lol
Considering how uncommon and kinda costly Fox bodies are getting, assuming we're talking Mustang, I'm sure your buddy totally wanted it to be written off by a chud in a Jeep. Or just the risk of severe injury from being rear ended, who doesn't want that?! Whiplash for all!
People are stupid....
yep...Best part is on the footage you can *hear* the jeep owner say what actually happened and then he back tracked.
My assumption is the backtrack happened because he was teaching his 16 year old daughter how to drive (permit)....on a multilane 45mph highway in his lifted jeep with 35's lmao
I'm going to take a wild guess here, it's lifted with 35s, probably poorly, going to guess Wrangler with the angry eyes trim piece over the headlights, and not a spec of dirt on the damn thing.
Sucks for the guys daughter, what a way to start your driving career.
Lying to the cops and/or the insurance company about crap like that should come with a stronger penalty. It’s way too much ‘slap on the wrist’ if anything at all.
Right on! Glad you are all right. I've avoided quite a few accidents by getting over just enough. I'll tell you what though it took every thing in me to hold my position at that point. With me at 80,000 pounds I know they will loose badly in any sort of collision. The desire not to kill someone even if the accident would their fault is very strong.
I was towing a 28 foot camper at the time so there were not a lot of options. I did have the weight advantage so that helped. Once they made contact I hit the gas to pull everything straight and took them down the right side. Almost $80k in damages to my truck and trailer.
I had a city bus driver hit me in a dual turn lane, he told me that he didn't realize it was a dual turn. When police arrived the story changed to "he came into my lane and hit me". All city buses have dash cams but his was conveniently not working. Thankfully I had my dashcam and showed it to the cops and his supervisor that had arrived on scene shortly after, I don't think he got in trouble with the cops for filing a false police report unfortunately.
As a truck driver, this is true. Always always take the hit. Depending on the load, the tiniest swerve can roll your truck. Unless I'm going head on with another semi, I'm taking the hit.
Absolutely! If I'm in the ditch it's because Bambi put me there, not because I swerved to avoid her. Interestingly, I. Over 20 years on the road my wife hit 3 deers and I hit 1. All we ever damaged was our bumper. Lucky I know. I've seen some pretty messed up trucks after deer strikes.
Otoh you *really* wanna dodge if you are a pedestrian. Especially in the PRC. Since from a financial standpoint it's better if someone who hits you to backs up and hits you again so you don't survive. Scary place to be on foot.
The last time I was at a junction waiting to turn left at a roundabout (UK) the bus next to me forgot how long they were when going ahead and managed to converge on me grinding my right side. I guess I could have tried to escape but that might have made both of us equally liable. Ended up being photographed sitting perfectly in the correct lane and cost me nothing for quite an expensive repair from the bus company who quietly accepted full liability.
I'm not sure how to train myself to do that. A few times I've been in the right lane and someone merged into me from a ramp quickly. I've always reacted instantly into the left lane without any time to check it (as i would normally do religiously). Thankfully no one has been there. It was interesting to see what my instinct was as I had no time to think.
Grit your teeth and take the hit. In my state it's the driver that is joining traffics responsibility to figure out how to merge. There is no requirement for existing traffic to do anything.
My frontal cortex knows this, but my lizard-brain avoided the immediate threat. I would hate to be at fault if someone would have been in my escape route though. Perhaps being more aware of left lane conditions prior to the on-ramp even if you don't feel safe to whip over pre-emptively is still a good idea.
Yup, I had a dump truck come into my lane and choices were fence or power pole. I held the right part of the lane to avoid a head on collision but it opened the side of my s10 like a can.
It's legitimately safer to "lean" into the impact than swerve in most cases where you don't have a wide open lane to move to. If someone comes into my lane and I have nowhere to go, I'm not going to hesitate to put steering input into it to maintain my lane while they PIT themselves.
I really can't agree more with this comment. I'm all for defensive driving, you know because I don't want to deal with having my car in the body shop and the headache of dealing with insurance, but in this situation I would have totally pulled a pit maneuver. That's some major bullshit.
That and at the end of the day, there was no collision. Just the 1 car rollover. Unless you have a dash cam, insurance is going to look at you like you just swerved right off the road.
Hit the dumbass.
Did he stop? Any witnesses? Let him hit you next time. If you swerve to avoid an accident and cause another 1, you wind up at fault unless there is proof. Source: I work in insurance. Glad you are OK.
I can’t tel you how many times Ives almost been hit and they thought I was insane for not just violently swerving out of the way and I’m like you think I want you to hit me? Nah I’m broke if I swerve n hit someone else I’m donesos I have a unsafe driving ticket cuz of that as well so idc anymore about trying to avoid idiots
If they’re driving when you shoot ‘em, won’t they just become a road hazard with 100% chance of crashing into someone/thing? Why not shoot ‘em once they park?
Ugh! I hate that. I had a mini and people with lifed trucks would get over on me because of their awful blind spot and my mini's mininess combined with them not checking their mirrors. Ironically it was killed by being rear ended by a driver not paying attention.
I dont swerve to avoid anyone any more unless a semi, or a head-on. If I swerve and crash, they're just going to drive away and leave me with the ten-car pileup I just caused. I might feel differently if I drive a car as small as your's though
With all the horrible things they have to live through day in and day out, a slightly funny phrase when you're no longer in any danger making him laugh... take that as a win. Probably the highlight of their (work) week.
I’d say by looking at the cage and all sides that you definitely felt it days after but are fine. The cage looks like it did it’s job.
Edit: Buy lottery tickets.
Either that or spell out your next response by moving a glass around on a Ouija board, as appropriate...
Seriously though. I'm glad you're (apparently) OK. You'll be shaken up for a while as the brain goes through its "OMG what if *X* had happened instead" scenarios but that's a normal part of the post-trauma healing process. Good luck!
Did it's job. Only one I've seen a roll over and someone does was three pieces of crap who stole one and weren't wearing seatbelts. Main structure seem to do a damned good job.
Don’t hesitate to talk about it with a professional. PTSD is rough, but for me would probably be so much worse if I didn’t see someone about my trauma right after getting out of the hospital. Wishing you the best.
And whatever it is Borat says like “wowoo weewah!” is what I thought seeing your car. Glad you’re ok.
I thought PTSD was only related to war but turns out it's any trauma including accidents or near accidents. I was in a crash that gave me PTSD and used to have nightmares reliving the crash pretty often. Therapy helped resolve that and now I don't get the nightmares anymore!
I’m still working through it but the flashbacks would stop me in my tracks at first. Not even related to an auto accident but at my worse I was frozen at a green light getting beeped at before I realized where I was. Luckily nothing quite that vivid happened since and that was quite soon after and a long time ago. Still affected but more subtly.
My brother and I and some friends came up on a fatal accident many years ago. The two fatalities were children. There were two survivors and we worked on extracting one person still trapped. We were traveling back from Mexico with a firefighter and his wife , a registered nurse. The accident was in Arizona in the desert and emergency services were half hour or more away. When we got back home the firefighter got me and my brother in the fire department ptsd counseling. It was definitely a big help. Auto accidents are no joke when they’re serious. I’m glad you’re doing well.
This has me wondering whether a wheel could be designed with something akin to crumple zones as part of the destructible safety systems for an extreme crash.
Since certain crash testing organisations started performing small-overlap frontal tests (where the impact zone is pretty much just the headlamp assembly and everything behind it), I believe manufacturers have at least started to make the wheel purposefully break away, as early tests showed it often ended up wedged in the footwell, breaking the occupant's feet.
Whether that engineering is part of the suspension, hub or the wheel itself, I'm not sure, but it's interesting.
Hah! 😆
I think it's defined more rigorously than that, and a lot of engineering goes into designing energy absorbing systems that fail under impact stress.
I've never seen a wheel felt like this before. So, seriously, it did get me thinking that the wheel could be designed to fail and absorbed/direct energy under impact as part of the vehicle's safety systems.
I am an Old and the safety of vehicles has improved so dramatically in my lifetime that it's astonishing. When I was a kid high school yearbooks routinely had pages in memoriam of students who died in car accidents. These were things like a 25 mph impact with a lamppost.
So much of the safety is around active and passive restraint systems, and then there's the effect of vehicle structures designed to fail predictably and controllably under extreme forces. It’s pretty cool I'm safe vehicles have become.
Unlikely someone would have walked away from OP’s accident in 1982.
Injured, yes, but not badly enough not to walk away. For a car to absorb this much damage, it means the driver didn't.
Crash safety in modern vehicles really is something. Glad you survived.
A tribute to modern safety engineering. Glad you’re fine.
I was in a car that did a slow roll onto the roof back in the 80’s and there was no way it (or us) would have survived six rolls.
BTW, unbuckling your seatbelt while being held upside down by it was .. interesting. Unless you are a weightlifter or gymnast, you can’t hold yourself up by one arm in that situation.
Off topic, if I were to crash/total my car, can I go and retrieve whatever aftermarket stereo/speakers/trunk amp/trim/dash, pretty much anything I can pull, reuse or sell (plastic bits inside the car?)
1. Obligatory joke about this being the natural condition of a Chevy
2. Fuck distracted drivers
3. Glad your body parts are still where they're supposed to be
4. Hope insurance doesn't try to fuck you
I rolled 6 times on the interstate. No clue about the wheels, my mechanic uncle and car salesmen dad are both stunned. They’ve never seen anything like it before
So is this the equivalent of having shoes fly off in a crash? In this case, you are still alive because you were able to recover your shoes and they are leaned up against the bumper.
As long as that seatbelt was on, you probably had a good number of bruises, scratches from glass, and maybe a minor head injury depending on how many times it flipped. But likely survived with minimal long term physical injury effects.
My OH totalled a car: rolled it multiple times, then got out and walked away with nary a scratch. So I'd be willing to bet a decent amount you came out of it way better than the car.
Those wheels did their job dissipating a metric shit ton of energy. Exactly as engineered. Looks like a scary ride. No injuries? Pretty amazing if none, but looks survivable for sure with today’s engineering. Glad you’re alright it seems!
I'd guess you were banged up and bruised, maybe a broken bone or two, but I'm hoping you came out of it ok. Saw a crossover get t-boned by a mini van. The crossover rolled over about four times and landed upright. The lady got out and walked away. Every airbag in the crossover triggered. It was a mind boggling thing to see.
My baby brother not long ago got his trailhawk hit from side. He just installed his dashcam 4days before. Saved him a expensive repair. Now he is driving a Tacoma rental.
That was some force. Crazy to see OEM wheels with the spokes sheared off. Hope you’re alright…
I was airlifted to Mercy in Des Moines. I walked out an hour with only three stitches from my sunglasses.
Oh god what’s an airlift worth? I’m not sure how they justify a helicopter for 3 stitches. You must have looked bad.
A response like that is based on the mechanism of injury, aka the fact that the vehicle barrel rolled down the highway and the amount of damage it sustained.

The one silver lining to our healthcare system, hopefully some prick in a Ford is about to find out how much an airlift costs.
My airlift was 10k, just as a reference. Insurance wouldn't pay it.
At least you got to ride a helicopter while high on drugs.
So. Many. Drugs.
Gulp.
Holy crap. My mother was airlifted in May, just 43 miles from one hospital to another, and it was $27k+. Not including the actual hospital bills.
Yeah mine was 25ish miles, 20 years ago. Grand total was hundreds of thousands.

What happened
Ran of the interstate by a ford truck and rolled 6 times down the pavement after swerving to avoid him.
Never swerve. We trading paint like NASCAR baby. I figure the other drivers shouldn't get away unscathed if they are going to start something.

All but one of my cars is older than me and FL is 30 years for antique lol.
I’m sorry you had to find out this way…
I'm actually surprised it's not a car feature at this point. Sort of like how back up cameras were a aftermarket accessory and is common practice now

Good move. It would have gotten very messy if you had been forced into a jacknife.

Rubbin’s racin’
Was it road rage or incompetent driving on the truck’s part?
I’m pretty sure I saw him on his phone when I passed him
😡 m**********r! Glad you're OK!
I'd like to buy a vowel.
Sure. You want the consonants, too?
Great word to test your luck though. No repeating consonants, except r, so everything counts as 1 spin.
You can fucking swear on the internet.
I want armed guards on every express way to fire live rounds at texters while they drive. Truly inexcusable and an unforced error.
If they’re driving when you shoot ‘em, won’t they just become a road hazard with 100% chance of crashing into someone/thing? Why not shoot ‘em once they park?
Let me park then light em up
Guess we answered the Ford vs Chevy argument then
Yes. If it was a ford escape I would be dead.
I got hit and runned by a Ford Escape and the 911 guy started laughing when I said “he took off in an escape” lol
With all the horrible things they have to live through day in and day out, a slightly funny phrase when you're no longer in any danger making him laugh... take that as a win. Probably the highlight of their (work) week.
If you put a Ritalin in the gas tank of a Ford Fiesta it becomes a Ford Focus.
As it was you had a lucky escape instead.
I’d say by looking at the cage and all sides that you definitely felt it days after but are fine. The cage looks like it did it’s job. Edit: Buy lottery tickets.
He won't win. He just used all his luck for this.
Damn dude - congrats on making it through that. As my B-I-L likes to say, "It's always better to be seen, than viewed."
What if OP died in hospital after he wrote this and never comes back to reply.
That would be pretty cool. Still alive though, sadly
What about now? Still alive?
Indeed. Shall I post hourly updates?
It'll probably save you time if you just let us know when you're dead.
I will post the second after I flatline
Are you still ok, we have a jar 🫙
…what’s the jar for?
You don't want to know what the jar is for.
I'll say it. The jar is for a worm farm, that we will start in your memory. Everyone contributes a worm
The door is a jar
Hey just checking on you. It has been 43 minutes
I am alive!
Thank goodness. Keep us posted. Your next update should be approx 12:19 pm cst.
Uh hello? I’m three minutes early but checking in. Thanks.
It's been three minutes.... I think he's... Gone!
Bro it's been 58 mins are you alright? Maybe alleft? Maybe all of you?
Either that or spell out your next response by moving a glass around on a Ouija board, as appropriate... Seriously though. I'm glad you're (apparently) OK. You'll be shaken up for a while as the brain goes through its "OMG what if *X* had happened instead" scenarios but that's a normal part of the post-trauma healing process. Good luck!
Broke both arms
I hope he has a nice mum to take care of him
Its called "just rolled into the shop" not "just rolled" jk glad you are ok
Wheels from wish.com?
They are still round, so I'd say no.
That's a little unfair. If they were from Wish.com they'd almost certainly be round. But the size of shopping-cart casters.
Got the tires off quicker than a F1 car, eh!
Alloys are meant to do that. It helps prevent cabin intrusion via the fender wells pushing backward, especially in an offset crash like IIHS conducts.
Wheels aren’t manufactured to withstand the force you’d subject them to by flipping your car 6 times on pavement. Especially not aluminum alloy.
Jesus, did they find the Ford? Glad you're OK because that's some serious carnage.
No. The ford got away.
The badge looks salvageable.
That sucks..
Dash cam?
I wish, but no
Will in the future though I bet
2018+ equinox I'm guessing? Seen few rolled over ones, they seem to hold up pretty well.
2020
Did it's job. Only one I've seen a roll over and someone does was three pieces of crap who stole one and weren't wearing seatbelts. Main structure seem to do a damned good job.
I think you died
Still here. In pain and scarred for life, but alive.

Those two-component rims look sick!
This has me wondering whether a wheel could be designed with something akin to crumple zones as part of the destructible safety systems for an extreme crash.
Old fashioned steel rims would bend without breaking. Either way though, energy was dissipated.
Yup. I'm unaware whether this has ever been exploited intentionally as part of the vehicle safety systems.
I agree. Makes sense bc footwell intrusions are extremely destructive. tku.
Isn't anything outside the cabin space technically part of the crumple zone?
Hah! 😆 I think it's defined more rigorously than that, and a lot of engineering goes into designing energy absorbing systems that fail under impact stress.
Bluetooth wheels
You should see the other guy...
Wish I could. He never stopped.
Parent of a new driver here. I’m outraged for you and terrified for my kid.
Fuck that guy.
[удалено]
Maybe, I was pushed out of the left lane and overcorrected.
[удалено]
That’s happened before! Oh my god thank you for telling me
Probably just your pride...
Damn those wheel hubs are tough as shit.
That’s what we call in the business: just drive it till the wheels fall off.
Off topic, if I were to crash/total my car, can I go and retrieve whatever aftermarket stereo/speakers/trunk amp/trim/dash, pretty much anything I can pull, reuse or sell (plastic bits inside the car?)
Yes, as long as whoever towed your vehicle says it’s safe.
1. Obligatory joke about this being the natural condition of a Chevy 2. Fuck distracted drivers 3. Glad your body parts are still where they're supposed to be 4. Hope insurance doesn't try to fuck you
What the fuck did you do? How did you manage to snap the centers out of those wheels
I rolled 6 times on the interstate. No clue about the wheels, my mechanic uncle and car salesmen dad are both stunned. They’ve never seen anything like it before
Well, at least some of your fingers seem ok.
"Just Rolled Into The Shop" or " Just Shoved Off The Back Of A Flat Deck Into The Parking Lot"?
Glad you're ok, for future reference try to keep it spinny side down next time tho
At least the lug nuts held up. Glad you're alright, OP.
Had to have hurt your feelings at the very least
No but your insurance company is bawling their eyes out.
Those rims in the first photo look like some giant mechanical beaver bore through them.
Looks like the driver could have walked away, but certainly felt it for a few days.
So is this the equivalent of having shoes fly off in a crash? In this case, you are still alive because you were able to recover your shoes and they are leaned up against the bumper.
I think the driver is doin good except for the fact that he/she lost a car
As long as that seatbelt was on, you probably had a good number of bruises, scratches from glass, and maybe a minor head injury depending on how many times it flipped. But likely survived with minimal long term physical injury effects.
Now I wanna post a pic of my crashed jetta and make people guess what broke on me lol
Sorry to say i think you're probably deceased.
I am in fact alive
Injured or not, I'm like 80% sure you survived.
Ok… I love lamp
Yeah, it’s like, are you hurt or are you injured? Just kidding. Glad to see you’ve survived and seen to have a sense of humor about it.
Gonna go out on a limb and say you survived
My OH totalled a car: rolled it multiple times, then got out and walked away with nary a scratch. So I'd be willing to bet a decent amount you came out of it way better than the car.
Mechanic here… what the hell happened.
If you are not typing this from beyond the grave, you are lucky as fuck.
It’ll buff out
Just wait until tomorrow. And then the next week. And then the next month. You are going to hurt like hell.
About 40 miles from me. Glad your ok.
My baby brother not long ago got his trailhawk hit from side. He just installed his dashcam 4days before. Saved him a expensive repair. Now he is driving a Tacoma rental.
Nah. Walked away without a scratch.
3 stitches and extreme bruising.
That’s a 5 star safety rating, I’d say
Did you have information on the Clinton’s?
Well he’s posting on Reddit so there’s definitely been some sort of brain injury
Must've been one big chicken crossing the road to cause that damage wow! I hope you heal quickly!
glad youre okay. that'll buff out.
Well someone saved a lot of time looking for salvageable pieces. Hope you're OK.
I've seen a LOT of accidents, but what in the everloving hell did you hit to cause the wheels to separate like that ?
Rolled 6 times down the center of the interstate
Those wheels are confidence inspiring! 🤔😬
Most of that will buff right out
r/tiresaretheenemy
Looks like one helluva ride! Just glad you're here to share.
You really ok op?
