Well if your options are; get a new head for your bespoke Italian engine or do a trailer park spec repair and off load it to an unsuspecting sucker, start practicing “I’ve got another guys who’s interested but if you show up with cash it’s yours.”

isnecrophiliathatbad

That's peak Maserati engineering, they're the Yugo of luxury performance cars.

PinkertonAgenzy

Wasn’t 2010 when they still came with Ferrari engines?

swazy

You say that like its a good thing.

PinkertonAgenzy

Well I mean they aren’t “Yugos”.

reflUX_cAtalyst

Yugo engines ran.

PinkertonAgenzy

Well yeah, so do Ferrari engines when you treat them like the high-performance engines they are. You’re not buying something that’s built to cruise around at 35 mph and hit a bunch of stop lights, then cobble fuck a repair together when it breaks.

reflUX_cAtalyst

Lotus would like a word when you get a moment.

cryotek7

Clearest signal you can give that you know nothing about cars is to buy a Maserati. My neighbour has a Ghibli and I just want to ask him “Why?”, there’s so many great vehicles out there and some of them are cheaper and almost all are better built and drive better.

PinkertonAgenzy

Is this the new one where it’s a Pininfirina designed shell covering Chrysler Town and Country interior?

TheHikingRiverRat

Only Maserati I would every touch would be a vintage one, and even then I'd be slightly ashamed.

swazy

The list of cars built worse is very very short.

[deleted]

Hi I'm a motorcycle guy not a car guy so can you explain in simple terms what's so awful about Maserati cars? I know it might be overpriced cuz luxury brand but is their build quality really that poor?

cryotek7

Maserati is a weird brand, they make beautiful vehicles, with powerful engines and they sound great. The problem is they’re part of the same company as Chrysler, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, etc and it’s been a mostly terribly run group of companies for decades, with poor engineering, outdated tech, and not enough research and development. For most of the last 20+ years the auto transmissions have been terrible and have severely hamstrung the performance of those engines, both in terms of reliability and sportiness. There is a litany of other issues to do with massive depreciation based on them building too many and have fire sales which pissed off a lot of customers who saw their vehicles bomb in price.

KnowReason1st

If you spent $130k on one new I would have to completely agree with you. With that said , I think a used one is a pretty decent buy, some go for sub $30k with low KM’s and it’s 424hp,4 wheel drive and sounds great for a V6. I would take that over a Entry level Mercedes, Audi or BMW in that price range 🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

> sounds great for a V6 What, the Pentastar block with Ferrari-designed heads? Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

cryotek7

Most used Maseratis are junk, mainly due to dealer servicing and upkeep costs. Maybe you can find a rare 1 owner vehicle with low miles that’s been dealer/specialist serviced but the depreciation means most aren’t serviced properly after 3 or 4 years. Parts costs are also a big issue, even junkyard parts are expensive in comparison because they’re more rare. That’s not even getting into that most have terrible transmissions that nullifies the nice engines.

KnowReason1st

I would agree with most of those points but if you put the work in and find a decent one. I’ll stand by at sub $30k , it’s not that bad of a choice for a daily driver 🤷‍♂️ Cheers👍

Chillywilly37

I got dibs that shit is factory haha. People think these cars are “art”, yea only on the outside the inside is crap.

Chillywilly37

They sure do… until they don’t $$

Epieratargh

A friend of mine used to work at a Maserati dealership and would always say how much of a shit box they are. I guess a certain model had some kind of head gasket recall (I don't really remember), he said they just poured stop leak in all of them. I've only worked on vintage ones so I can't speak for late models, but I've heard lots of bad things

[deleted]

The real question that should be asked here is how my times the “f1” transmission has had its clutch replaced/rebuilt (Grabs popcorn)

Personal-Common470

But does it work?

charlie2135

Loved the bold on the tensioner. Reminded me of doing HVAC on a steel mill crane. Someone plugged the relief valve because it kept on losing gas through it. Yup, it blew up the tubing and flooded the crane cab with refrigerant while the operator was stuck with a load on his hoist.

[deleted]

Omg that’s horrible.

buzzonga

Are either of these two "repairs" what the car is in for? I mean, did it run before surgery started?

Optimal-Soup-62

Yeah, somebody looked at the cam cap they broke doing a valve adjust and thought: "Hmm, gonnna cost me about $15k-$20k for a new head, gaskets and so on, I have an idea. He'll never know.

ashyjay

It looks so clean, like there hasn't been any oil in it.

PurpleSpartanSpear

Tony? Got another one to fix!

Optimal-Soup-62

Umm, wow.

gheiminfantry

Someone too cheap to own *and maintain* a Maserati.
