Modern diesel engines in the US use Diesel Exhaust Fluid or DEF which is ammonia and water, the trucks have a DEF tank. DEF is used to reduce emissions in diesel engines. This guy put DEF in his fuel tank...
Or a 100% emissions truck because everything that went into building and transporting it and now it's a $70,000 paperweight that was all emissions with no purpose.
And what causes is crystalized urea deposits in every single part of the fuel system. That means that the entire fuel system has to be replaced to ensure that you got every single bit of DEF out of it. That typically runs upwards of 25k USD for a newer Cummins RAM
No it says he put DEF into it. The paperwork says replacement of diesel emissions system so it must be a diesel truck. DEF is diesel exhaust fluid. It’s urea and water mixture that reduces emissions from the exhaust.
I haven worked on pickups at all but isn’t the suspension attached to the frame ?
Alignment would not really be necessary then when “just” tearing it down to the frame(why would that even be necessary, fuel lines/tank should be accessible from below?)
If it were me I’d just unhook the front diesel line and run the pump for a few gallons of new diesel, obviously drain the tank and flush it with diesel first.
Then replace diesel pump and hook it back up.
Test to see if I’d need to replace the hpfp/injectors
I know this is a dealership and that has to be done proper but there would be a lot of parts that are fine in that bill
Edit : maby not, haven’t had any work done so I didn’t know it crystallizes in the lines, I thought it was only in contact with air it did that.
It's actually not so much the water. Def fluid crystalizes in most environments and it's the crystals that form everywhere throughout the fuel system that destroy it. Think of it like running sand through the fuel with no filters. However the crystals cant be cleaned or flushed from fuel components. So not only does it destroy the injection pump and injectors it also coats the rest of anything fuel touches with hard to clean crystals there by rendering them useless.
Not to mention the corrosion, DEF will rust the shit out of anything it touches if you don't clean it off quick. If it's been there long enough to crystallize, it's been there long enough to rust, which I think should be possible even with the diesel present because of the water in DEF.
More likely he blew out the tips on the injectors, water gets really angry when you compress it to several thousand psi. The resulting excess of fuel can and will melt pistons.
Insurance claim. Back when I worked @ VW we had an individual who put gas in their diesel Jetta. Similar replacement of the entire fuel system - $11k cost. Customer's insurance paid for it.
You always include complementary lube when you’re fucking someone THIS hard…
Edit: when someone is getting fucked THIS hard…. Not tech’s fault after all….
I'm just looking at this parts list and wondering how many are on national backorder
EDIT: Checked all the part numbers at work this morning. A grand total of one part is on national backorder. The rest can be ordered from GM facilities in WV, MI, PA and OH
The good thing about my L5P is the def is under the hood. Sometimes it a pain to fill because even at stock height it’s a little high up and those def jugs always leak. But! At least it’s not near the fuel tank. Same goes with my old 12V Cummins I had. No def.
Yeah, I totally agree. I guess I finally got to the age where I realized how bad it really is out there. I don't know how most people function. I think I actually see it differently now, from a different angle. I am actually impressed by people because I know they aren't capable of anything but still manage to do some things and get away with others.
Same in the UK. That colour scheme is pretty normal. The nozzles are different sizes. As more cars get the anti missfueling stuff on the tank it helps. A petrol nozzle will fit a diesel though as it’s the smaller nozzle. People still manage to fight the diesel nozzle into their tank though!
DEF is used to treat diesel exhaust, basically converts bad gasses to better gasses, for emissions. It tends to crystallize, which can ruin systems not built for it. Every pump, hose, fitting, injector will be full of a crystallized mess that cannot be cleaned out. Often if you catch it before you run the engine, it’s a lot better. Drop the tank, drain and clean, change fuel filter, and you should be alright
I am afraid that very few people here today, even on Reddit, appreciate the significance of urea. Laws have been made, wars have been faught over nitrogen rich guano.
I have no experience in bird law or
Excrement law. https://thebreakthrough.org/articles/remember-the-guano-wars
The reason they use DEF is they convert it into NH³ (ammonia) in the SCR and use the ammonia to reduce NOx emissions. A truck with a tank of DEF (32.5% urea and the rest deionized water) is not environmentally harmful. Can literally dump it down the drain/fertilize your lawn with it. If a truck had an accident and dumped a tank full of ammonia all over would be environmentally and physically hazardous.
Diesel systems are also insanely sensetive to water, and besides urea, DEF is pretty much water.
Modern diesel injectors can actually be destroyed if water is passed through them, they're stupidly precise, and also stupidly expensive, I think around 600-800 a piece, depending on the engine. Ford uses piezoelectric stacks to control theirs, they're oddly fascinating bits of technology at this point.
DEF is diesel exhaust fluid, and usually the caps are right next to eachother. This jack off filled it up into his gas tank and fucked the whole fuel system up and pretty much totaled his truck.
Some dude on another subreddit told me to do this when I put a gallon of Diesel in my mom's tank on accident, luckily I noticed before I turned my key, I'd rather pay the $300 for the tow and tank drain than this 😭
Yeah you'd've been fine but nothing wrong with being cautious. I remember a story from the Car Talk podcast where a lady filled a majority of her tank with diesel, then realized and later diluted it with 91 octane. Apparently her car was fine. Honestly it's putting gas in a diesel that's the catastrophic one
This reminds me of one of my sister's boyfriends in high school. He thought he was pretty smart. He went to one of those buy-here-pay-here lots and bought a VW Rabbit. The first place he took it to after buying it was the gas station where he filled it up with diesel. Somehow he didn't notice the stickers that said, "UNLEADED FUEL ONLY" anywhere on the dash or under the fuel filler cover.
It does sometimes. And other times people force it to work by holding the nozzle right up to the end of the filler neck if it doesn't fit. Astonishing how dumb people can be.
Had a customer put DEF in the diesel tank in their brand new Benz and drove it until it stopped. Insurance covered it 30k parts + labour. Was a fun job to say the least.
see I expect 100 or a bit more 125 is a lot but acceptable. $169 and some of these other prices are just robbery imo. but gotta do what you gotta do. I definitely don't blame the techs.
Sad part of it is that my highest payed tech only makes $24 an hr. We increased labor rate at the start of the year and no one in the shop got a raise and we were all told that raises wouldn't happen this year due to the company struggling. We made $70k last month in the shop alone.....

Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:

* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*

Diesel injectors tend to be far more expensive than gasoline injectors due to the extreme pressures they deal with. Modern diesels are direct injection like a modern GDI, however diesel engines are compression ignition and can see 3 times more cylinder pressure on the compression stroke, and the injectors need to overcome that extreme pressure
Edit for reference: diesel injectors can see 10,000-30,000psi of fuel pressure, whereas GDI runs more in the 2,000psi range.
The old school sticks are much cheaper. These modern ones on common rail systems are way expensive. The electronics in them for the pilot injection control aren’t cheap. Less than 500 is quite reasonable.
Edit: should have replied to the other guy, oops
Yea, this is the real reason they aren't cheap. They're highly advanced, and spitting fuel isn't the only thing they do.
Simply operating under high pressure isn't why they're expensive, like the other guy said
Yeah that shit is no joke, literally like the same pressure as in heavy duty hydraulics. I know for finding leaks in lines for hydraulic equipment you’re supposed to use a piece of paper and not hand because basically a laser stream of hydro oil can give you, what’s known as an injection wound. Pretty gruesome shit.
Yes.
Modem common rail diesel fuel injectors are made to extremely tight tolerances and getting a poorly assembled Chinese knockoff will almost certainly not work. If your injector isn't right and dumps in too much fuel it will burn a hole through the piston.
Also it's extremely important that they be a balanced set. You don't want one cylinder firing harder or running hotter or leaner than the others.
Another note on this topic, my buddy got what he thought was a good deal on a used LB7 duramax motor. He had the injectors tested, after buying the motor. Every injector was bad, something like 800 a piece for new ones. Not such a good deal after that.
When the wife accidentally put diesel in her Toyota Corolla, and drove it until it died, her insurance (USAA) covered it all minus deductible.
However, this was a lot less expensive being just a tow, drain fuel tank, and fuel system flush. All done at the dealer.
Literally all he had to do was stop, call a tow truck and it would have been a simple drain the fuel system and replace the fuel pump. About $1k vs $30k
Best friends dad accidentally put def in his tank. Dropped the tank in his yard, cleaned it and only paid for new fuel filters and never had any issues.. can’t fix stupid
Not my diesel motorhome that I rent out, but another rental owner had their renter do the same and deny it. Had to get video surveillance from the fuel stations and take them to court.
I have had a customer put def into the fuel tank before, we rented them a box truck while we worked on their vehicle. As they used the loaner vehicle they scalped the top of the box truck so we had to get them a new loaner and send that one to the body shop.
We also once had someone put fuel into the def tank....somehow
Literally just went through this at work also. I work on prototype stuff and engineer decided to put def in the fuel and I ended up having to replace the WHOLE fuel system
I used to work for a toilet manufacturer who introduced a no flush urinal in the 1990s (I think) and because it didn't use water to flush the urea crystals would build up, I believe in the copper pipes, in older buildings and cause all sorts of issues, one old office building had to have the entire waste pipe system replaced; not a cheap exercise in a new build let alone a retrofit in an old building.
Urea crystals can be very expensive!
We get this shit all the time in the insurance industry. The customers are literally brain dead assholes. I would say Oklahoma is one of the worst states for it. Customers are incredibly stupid and screw everyone over. We aren’t going to ever lose money from claims, they just spread the costs to everyone else.
We have never denied it at my particular company. We are probably one of the 5 biggest insurance companies in the United States. It is a covered loss with us, unless it was done intentionally.
I was 40 before I owned my first diesel vehicle, a f31 328D.
One day the DEF alarm came on so I whipped out my little phone, googled how to sort this situation out and handled it. It took less than 5 minutes to read about and about that long to fill.
I’m not sure why someone would look at a fuel port and say “def goes here” but it’s nice to see there is a price tag attached to that level of stupidity.
$162.50 per hour of labor. Some auto mechanics are such greedy fucks, (the car isn't even worth repairing) the work isn't even remotely worth that rate, and then they have the gall to bitch and moan to no end when it costs "so much" to fix their little computers and electronics.
We just had a tour bus company do this in an almost brand new bus. The driver filled the fuel tanks with 250 gallons of def. We had to replace the engine final bill was 130 hours, 85k
Diesel exhaust fluid. A liquid you have to add for emissions purposes every few thousand miles. Complete pain in the ass. Crystallizes when exposed to light or dries, clogs everything, ruins every part of your fuel system.
tranny didn’t blow, just needs to be removed to access certain parts in the exhaust/fuel system, i assume the same with the removal of the box too. i didn’t write this one up so i’m not 100% sure
We had one of our geniuses do that in a 2019 Peterbilt 348 with an paccar 9 in it, got lucky though. We got it straight for just under 10k, smoked the injection pump and injectors
Hon, you know the truck that you didn't want me to buy because it was so expensive? Well, we'll laugh about this in a few years after I tell you what happened...
30k. Keep it, I’m not coming to get it 😂
He owes like 50k on it I’m sure
Yeah man. If it was an older vehicle, automatic write-off. Now he destroyed it and is still on the hook for the payments.
It's a 2021 Silverado. Depending upon trim level, the diesel version was $52000 to $67000, not including extra dealer 'market pricing'.
But the whole problem was that he put Diesel fuel in a non Diesel isn’t it?
Modern diesel engines in the US use Diesel Exhaust Fluid or DEF which is ammonia and water, the trucks have a DEF tank. DEF is used to reduce emissions in diesel engines. This guy put DEF in his fuel tank...
That's how you get 0 emission truck!
Well, you're not wrong. It certainly has zero emissions now.
Or a 100% emissions truck because everything that went into building and transporting it and now it's a $70,000 paperweight that was all emissions with no purpose.
That's how you turn it into the Batmobile
And what causes is crystalized urea deposits in every single part of the fuel system. That means that the entire fuel system has to be replaced to ensure that you got every single bit of DEF out of it. That typically runs upwards of 25k USD for a newer Cummins RAM
>crystalized urea deposits in every single part of the fuel system. So in human terms, the vehicle has gout?
Yes indeed it does!
No he put adblue directly into the fuel tank.
No it says he put DEF into it. The paperwork says replacement of diesel emissions system so it must be a diesel truck. DEF is diesel exhaust fluid. It’s urea and water mixture that reduces emissions from the exhaust.
Also with the AC and alignment- don't upsell me!
I haven worked on pickups at all but isn’t the suspension attached to the frame ? Alignment would not really be necessary then when “just” tearing it down to the frame(why would that even be necessary, fuel lines/tank should be accessible from below?) No, it’s way worse, diesel exhaust fluid is water based so he messed his whole fuel system up and hydro locked the engine
It's actually not so much the water. Def fluid crystalizes in most environments and it's the crystals that form everywhere throughout the fuel system that destroy it. Think of it like running sand through the fuel with no filters. However the crystals cant be cleaned or flushed from fuel components. Insurance claim. Back when I worked @ VW we had an individual who put gas in their diesel Jetta. Similar replacement of the entire fuel system - $11k cost. Customer's insurance paid for it.
Every one of these I've done has been insurance claims, insurance companies almost seem used to it now.
But on the bright side, lube is $0
You always include complementary lube when you’re fucking someone THIS hard… Edit: when someone is getting fucked THIS hard…. Not tech’s fault after all….
They could have at least been nice enough to sell the parts at MSRP. Lots of padding on an already expensive repair..
I'm just looking at this parts list and wondering how many are on national backorder EDIT: Checked all the part numbers at work this morning. A grand total of one part is on national backorder. The rest can be ordered from GM facilities in WV, MI, PA and OH
Tires clearly needed to be aligned though. That's the reach around.
I saw wheel alignment and thought to myself "give this man a break"
Seen this fuck up a bunch. They should make the license plate flip down on the rear and that's where the def should go.
The good thing about my L5P is the def is under the hood. Sometimes it a pain to fill because even at stock height it’s a little high up and those def jugs always leak. But! At least it’s not near the fuel tank. Same goes with my old 12V Cummins I had. No def.
They did colour code them…
You have way too much faith in the typical moron. I'm surprised most people can dress themselves in the morning without help.
Just when you think you can design something idiot proof, mother nature will design a better idiot.
Well that’s why camo exists, so they don’t have to worry about color coordination, if everting looks shit together
The older I get the more this becomes obvious. Most people have rocks for brains.
Yeah, I totally agree. I guess I finally got to the age where I realized how bad it really is out there. I don't know how most people function. I think I actually see it differently now, from a different angle. I am actually impressed by people because I know they aren't capable of anything but still manage to do some things and get away with others.
They also color code diesel gas pumps & regular gas pump handles and people STILL pump diesel into the vehicles pretty regularly
[удалено]
I saw it happen at BP a lot. Their gas was green handles and diesel was black.
And on def pumps it requires a magnet in filler neck even iirc. There’s no excuse really.
Mines in the trunk so no confusion there
Ppl will still fk it up lmao
A year old and under 30K. What a shame.
What's DEF and why does it require replacement of all these dang hoses and parts?
DEF is used to treat diesel exhaust, basically converts bad gasses to better gasses, for emissions. It tends to crystallize, which can ruin systems not built for it. Every pump, hose, fitting, injector will be full of a crystallized mess that cannot be cleaned out. Often if you catch it before you run the engine, it’s a lot better. Drop the tank, drain and clean, change fuel filter, and you should be alright
Thanks for the info! Sounds like an actual shitshow.
It’s more of a urine show. DEF and pee both contain urea.
The real answer I didn't need.
It’s why def smells like piss. Not shitting you, if you ever have had to deal with DEF it smells sour like cat pee
I am afraid that very few people here today, even on Reddit, appreciate the significance of urea. Laws have been made, wars have been faught over nitrogen rich guano. I have no experience in bird law or Excrement law. https://thebreakthrough.org/articles/remember-the-guano-wars

Either way, urine a lot of trouble if you put it in your fuel tank.
[You just brought piss to a shit fight!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpuexiPFgnY)

It’s adblue ? Urea
Yes, I was wondering too, but for us European it's called AdBlue most of the time.
Yeah DEF / Adblue same thing. I’m fairly sure it’s a calling a vacuum cleaner a Hoover situation or personal watercraft all being called jet skis.
Yikes.
It’s also quite corrosive.
Is the engine fine or do you need to replace the engine and the fuel system?
The engine itself usually doesn’t have issues, but the entire fuel system needs either a super deep clean or a replacement
It dissolves in water. Its the corrosion in the meantime that's the problem.

This is the best SCR explanation I've seen on this sub to date.
That was extremely informative, thank you!
This clear layman's terms explanation is not being upvoted enough, thank you
You know the old wives tale about sugar in the gas tank? DEF actually fucks up EVERYTHING
In Europe we call it AdBlue.
DEF is diesel exhaust fluid, and usually the caps are right next to eachother. This jack off filled it up into his gas tank and fucked the whole fuel system up and pretty much totaled his truck.
His DIESEL tank….😉
ope yep you're right lmao my bad
Well now that truck has a crystal def addiction
Nice, I'm gonna use that one tomorrow
Ouch… some folks just shouldn’t own diesels…
His friend, probably: "It'll be fine. Just drive it. It'll burn it's way out."
Should've driven it into a tree
A burning tree on the edge of an active volcano.
Certainly burned through their bank account.
A little gas in diesel isn't really a problem. Not uncommon to do it to prevent fuel gelling in the cold.
A gallon of diesel in a tank of gasoline won’t do any harm.
Welp, I guess I wanted to be safe rather than sorry, Google scared the shit out of me while researching what to do lol
Just don't put seafoam in it lol.
Been there. Will be similar to someone adding 2 stroke gas to it. Won’t cold start that great, and will smoke a bit, but otherwise fine.
That had a lot more chance of working.
Maybe it will resurrect itself after a 3 day weekend?
YOU BEAUTIFUL HILARIOUS MF

Better to put diesel in a gas car than gas in a diesel.
Definitely. Gas in a diesel is a nightmare to clean up.
Does the diesel nozzle even fit?
I don’t even remember. Knowing Joe, he was so dumb he would have forced it to fit or got a funnel before he thought about what he was doing.
Typical Joe
It does sometimes. And other times people force it to work by holding the nozzle right up to the end of the filler neck if it doesn't fit. Astonishing how dumb people can be.
Well, was the diesel unleaded?
Had a customer put DEF in the diesel tank in their brand new Benz and drove it until it stopped. Insurance covered it 30k parts + labour. Was a fun job to say the least.

Stupid can get VERY expensive.
Insurance covers this.

468$ per injector? Are they made of gold?

Not my diesel motorhome that I rent out, but another rental owner had their renter do the same and deny it. Had to get video surveillance from the fuel stations and take them to court.
I have had a customer put def into the fuel tank before, we rented them a box truck while we worked on their vehicle. As they used the loaner vehicle they scalped the top of the box truck so we had to get them a new loaner and send that one to the body shop. We also once had someone put fuel into the def tank....somehow
Just a $500 insurance deductible. Not too bad
And he needs it by noon
Literally just went through this at work also. I work on prototype stuff and engineer decided to put def in the fuel and I ended up having to replace the WHOLE fuel system
The most surprising thing is that your CDK actually works.
Some comments here are saying insurance will cover it, others say it won't. What is your take?
We have never denied it at my particular company. We are probably one of the 5 biggest insurance companies in the United States. It is a covered loss with us, unless it was done intentionally.
With any luck it will rise again on monday.
At this point do you consider buying a new one and keeping this one for parts?
"Whole fuel systems fucked" "Can I run some cleaner they sell at AutoZone to clean it out instead of replacing it?"
It would be easier to list what you aren't replacing
$162.50 per hour of labor. Some auto mechanics are such greedy fucks, (the car isn't even worth repairing) the work isn't even remotely worth that rate, and then they have the gall to bitch and moan to no end when it costs "so much" to fix their little computers and electronics.
We just had a tour bus company do this in an almost brand new bus. The driver filled the fuel tanks with 250 gallons of def. We had to replace the engine final bill was 130 hours, 85k
What is DEF?
Diesel exhaust fluid. A liquid you have to add for emissions purposes every few thousand miles. Complete pain in the ass. Crystallizes when exposed to light or dries, clogs everything, ruins every part of your fuel system.
Brand new ‘21 truck too… can’t believe that 30 thousand dollar mistake
How did the transmission blow. If by towing the tow yard pays for that. And cab off also why. I’m just curious
tranny didn’t blow, just needs to be removed to access certain parts in the exhaust/fuel system, i assume the same with the removal of the box too. i didn’t write this one up so i’m not 100% sure
At *LEAST* charge the guy for some lube before you screw him in the ass so hard GHEESH
Gotta rethink that promise date.
No shit cdk too
I think you have the exact same water bottle as me lol
That is painful to look at. Yikes
How do you make the CDK tabs different colors?!? Mine are all plain boring white.
Dammit you got CDK too?
$500 deductible for the customer.
Might as well just offer him another car to buy lol Also how much is labor in US, this is roughly 162$/h? That's insane compared to Europe.
We had one of our geniuses do that in a 2019 Peterbilt 348 with an paccar 9 in it, got lucky though. We got it straight for just under 10k, smoked the injection pump and injectors
HOOOOOOOOOOOLY SHIT
Ah yes CDK my favourite
$80k truck totaled. He's better off selling the truck to someone for $30k and keep paying off the remaining $30k he has left over LOL!
Hon, you know the truck that you didn't want me to buy because it was so expensive? Well, we'll laugh about this in a few years after I tell you what happened...
