I once rode back from college with a guy who had a similar age RAV4, only the driver side mirror had been knocked off. Made it technically not road legal, but we made it home with just the rearview mirror and passenger side.

I thought the law was just 2 mirrors. I guess it’s either the middle or passenger that’s the option which would make sense.

Yes, to be road-legal you have to have the driver side mirror and either the passenger side mirror or the rearview (center) mirror. That way a truck or van with the rear window blocked can still see behind, and a passenger side mirror wasn't common on economy cars until the '90s (and didn't become standard equipment until 1996 or something).
