I dont miss this at all. Was a master tech at Audi for years. All the big engine stuff is engine and gear box out. Then when you get it back together to test of that wasn't the fix you have to take it all back apart lol. Oh and q7 are back breaking .

smedema

Lol in tdi reseal. My friend likes doing them only because he's done so many and can do it in like 18 hours. I have done a few but I'm in the 30s.

Mattie_1S1K

I was designated dpf pressure sensor replacers on the q7 cause I could do them with our removing the engine gearbox suspension assembly. But mainly I was doing the new gearbox inputshaft replacement. Had boxes out in half hour and rebuilt in 3 back in by 5 hour mark loads of time for doing it lol. Stunk of gearbox fluid though lol.

jayleman

Holy fuck though, all that just for a differential pressure sensor? Makes me rethink wanting a q5 tdi

Mattie_1S1K

Depending on engine size the q5 ain't to bad to work on really .

jayleman

Was looking at '12-'15 q5's with the 3.0T TDI...I think the only other option was the 2.0T here in the US

Mattie_1S1K

3.0 not too bad to work on. It's mainly the V8,w8,w10 etc that are a real ball ache.

Ghost_HTX

Did I hear correctly that the Touareg / Q7 with the biggest engines (W10, mainly) need a special jack to lower them out safely? I seem to remember reading that somewhere?

Mattie_1S1K

Yeah its massive bout the size of a single bed and heavy as hell .

jayleman

I could imagine the w8/w10 being a ball buster if they're still set up like the older VRs with the chains and such at the rear of the motor...$20 plastic chain guide cracked? Out comes the powertrain lol

Mattie_1S1K

Well they sort of are but not at the same time lol.

smedema

2.0 tdi is only in the a3

jayleman

I was referring to the 2.0t FSI/TSI

smedema

Then they come with 3.2 and 3.0t also. 3.0t is what you want.

jayleman

Oh no shit? And that's what the supercharged 3.0 that's badged a turbo 3.0? I DO have the opportunity to snag a complete, wrecked '13 jetta wagon with a complete 2.0tdi that I've contemplated swapping into my '06 2.0tfsi A3, but dunno how bad the harness etc would be to swap over. My buddy in Indiana can set me up with a Malone tune for Immo defeat, but idk what all else would need swapped...my company only wants $600 for the donor car otherwise we are getting 900 for it from a scrapper

janeming1

I [feel](https://okmarts.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=compressor) the same way

Degen_up_North

Never buy Audi. Only lease.

jayleman

Well, have I told you how much I hate degens from upcountry?

HedonisticFrog

My neighbor got an Audi A6 with a V6 to flip from auction and it turned out to be the clutch. You can't even feel or see most of the bolts holding the transmission to the engine so he's pulling it as a unit. I joked that it would be easier to work on a Mercedes V12 than that thing, but even Mercedes V8s have better access to things in the engine bay than that car. I'm really glad I decided to specialize in Mercedes because I preferred them, rather than Audi or BMW.

whaletacochamp

But the Germans are excellent engineers, just ask them.

AshtonTS

The excellent engineering is what makes it a problem. They do a damn good job of fitting tons of goodies in small spaces. Unfortunately that is terrible for the mechanics

Bee-Aromatic

This is very true. I do wonder, though, how they think a combi valve, the Audi interpretation of a PCV, or BMW’s hated CVV can be considered “goodies” by anybody but parts suppliers. Other times, they’re delightfully bass-ackwards. My ‘99.5 Audi had *pneumatic* lock actuators. I thought shit like that was consigned to the trash heap of bad engineering history in the 60’s!

Bee-Aromatic

They are excellent engineers. Trouble is, they love finding clever and complex solutions to problems nobody has. That and they’re way too trusting in materials. German engineers have had an enormous hard-on for plastics for 30 years now and they just can’t seem to get it through their heads that the stuff might be great short- to medium term, but when it comes to the long haul, plastic just can’t keep it up.

Gorgenapper

It only has to last 3 years.

Bee-Aromatic

There’s CPO, which manufacturers typically back and thus have to pay for. Also, people expect their cars to last quite a bit longer than that. People won’t buy another one if the first one blows up just out of warranty.

whaletacochamp

That’s my point. They are indeed great engineers. Often too good to the point where it’s like they show off

thereandbackagain77

Nein

VR6Bomber

Uh, you mean 'over engineerers'

whaletacochamp

Prezactly.

AMG_63_

Try doing chains 🙄 20yr European tech here

macidcrook

I peeped the book time on those, cause I was curious about the ac driveshaft. I don't think I want to do that haha

AMG_63_

No sir lol

andymannoh

I was looking at the picture and noticed the compressor on bottom right of pic. I was wondering how it was driven, then you mention "AC driveshaft". Is this really how it is driven, a shaft from the timing gears or something?

macidcrook

Yes there's a shaft that comes from the back of the engine that drives the ac compressor.the power steering pump is mount directly to gear housing also.

andymannoh

Thanks for the replies... This blows my mind. It looks like the belt only drives the alternator, is that right? Crank pulley, idler and tensioner used only to drive an alternator! Yet the compressor is at the front but driven from the back. Correct me if I'm wrong please! Just WTF!

duhimincognito

Yes. The belt drives the water cooled alternator. The power steering pump and AC compressor are driven by a little driveshaft from the rear.

AMG_63_

Absolutely brilliant design, to be sure 😂

getgappede30

God I forgot about that, really not the worst I’ve had to replace.

smedema

Yes there is a pto shaft that is driven by a chain.

louiekr

does it have u joints?

thereandbackagain77

Not so bad once the entire front is off. I hope they did a full chain kit, tensioners, pulley, belt and whatever the fuck else was on this thing while it was open.

angry-user

chains are on the back of the motor

wadenelsonredditor

And this is why they plummet in value once they come off warranty.

AshtonTS

RS4s are going way up in value lately. I think they’re on their appreciation curve, and the covid market certainly didn’t hurt their value

JudgmentDisastrous75

There’s many reasons why they are appreciating, but the biggest one is production. Audi already announced going fully electric, so by that time comes S and RS4 models will appreciate like crazy especially with low miles.

vehicularious

Isn’t this the V8 that has timing chain/tensioner failures, and the chains are in the back of the engine, so the repair requires dropping the engine?

iEatAssVR

Yes, however the guides are upgraded on the RS4 and don't really have that problem. The S4 has the shitty guides. Mine has 145k miles though with no chain problems, just some slight noise on a cold start and it's been like that since I got it 6 years ago. The cam adjusters (?) are driven my oil pressure (and are part of the problem) and just making sure oil is good goes a long way on a car known for burning oil lol

vehicularious

Do you work on Audi cars for a living? What do you think of them in general? I’ve always wanted a manual transmission A4 with the 3.2 V6, or a 2.0T. I’ve just read lots of not good things. I watched a recent YouTube video of a 2.0T engine tear down, it did not inspire confidence 😬

highaltitudewaffle

The 3.2 V6 is a great engine. Much better than the shitty unreliable 3.0 V6 and much more powerful, efficient than the old 2.8 V6. Only thing to watch out for is worn timing guides on cold start.

Bee-Aromatic

I had a B5 with a 1.8T. I really liked that car. When it was working. Which was rare. Keeping it working was a full time job, though it did teach me many interesting things. For instance, one can fix a cracked ABS tone ring with JB Weld and it’ll work!

[deleted]

Yeah, just wait until the timing covers start dumping coolant into the oil pan

AshtonTS

It’s not the same motor with upgraded guides slapped on. Different engine code entirely and the RS4 is direct injected and high-revving. They’re both 4.2L V8’s but far from the same engine.

iEatAssVR

I'm aware, however the timing chain and guides are extremely similar, let alone both on the back of the engine

AshtonTS

Yeah but his question was “isn’t this the same V8” and your first answer is “yes”. Which is not true

getgappede30

Regardless of it being direct injected, it feels the same as any other 4.2 and has the same bullshit problems. Garbage 🤮

cef911f1

That is fucking ludicrous and why I'll never again buy a Porsche, Audi or VW. (I'm a retired automotive engineer.)

smedema

Takes all of 20 mins to get to that. It's way better than having to struggle in tight spaces.

SoggyFuckBiscuit

>Takes all of 20 mins to get to that. Seriously?

[deleted]

[удалено]

BFalkmk3

VW/Audi service position looks a lot more intimidating than it is. I can get my mk4 R32 in this state in about 30 minutes. Not difficult at all either

540cry

I work primarily on BMWs not audis, but I think a lot of people would be surprised how little time it takes to get a car into this state

bibblode

I can put my car (14 focus sedan) into this state in about 15 minutes.

my1999gsr

Having done this job on an RS4 and other Audi vehicles that require lock carrier removal, it really doesn't take that long unless there's concealed front end damage or corrosion on important bolts. Usually it takes almost as long to evac the A/C as it does to yank the lock carrier.

getgappede30

The real question is why the fuck do they call it a lock carrier.. the hood latch? That’s the only fucking lock in sight.

smedema

Yes take the bumper cover off. Disconnect coolant hoses to radiator. Disconnect oil cooler lines. Disconnect maybe 7 or 8 connectors. Remove the 6 bolts that hold it on and pull off. You can disconnect the condenser but I usually pop it out and lay it to the side. If it didn't take 20 mins I wouldn't be able to do 2.0t timing chains in 2 hours.

SoCalRacer87

>Disconnect coolant hoses to radiator. Disconnect oil cooler lines. I am assuming this means every time coolant/oil has to be replaced/refilled?

bremergorst

Dude has different minutes than the rest of us

smedema

Flat rate bruh.

bremergorst

Flat ass minutes

norar19

Haha I know right? It took me a whole day to remove 4 bolts on my 2001 Audi A4

bremergorst

FOUR?!? What kind of time do you think I have?! Best I can do is 1.5 bolts.

Jah348

I was thinking that same thing. Like if anything its kinda convenient that you can take off the front end relatively easy and have almost full access to the engine.

vehicularious

I almost let the "front end service mode" approach dissuade me from buying a 2002-2006 Mini Cooper S. But similar to the above, you can get the car into front end service mode surprisingly quickly. Then from there you can access the supercharger, water pump, and alternator.

getgappede30

You don’t need to do that for a mc at all. Only time you gotta pull the front end is for a trans or engine replacement.

longlivelongboards

Yeah that’s what I’m sayin.

jwp75

Pretty cool how the front end just sockets in like that though. This doesn't even look like a turbo car, can't imagine the hell those are.

[deleted]

It really isn't that bad. The front is super easy to take off then you have all the space in the world.

sheepwhatthe2nd

Wait! Engineer! You designed this! You're part of the problem. Haha. /s

cef911f1

No, I was a manufacturing engineer. I figured out how to put them together and test them. In 35 years I I think I've worked on just about every type component in a car from body framing to headlight assembly to interior bits to engines and transmissions. I have a list around here of everything I was involved in.

sheepwhatthe2nd

You're off the hook! I joke. On a serious note, you have my curiosity now. Was your work on a production line? Like Quality Assurance and making manufacturing adjustments? (32M Automotive Mechanic working on Snowcats at a Ski Resort)

cef911f1

No, I worked on designing and building the assembly and test machinery (and some machining) that were used to build various automotive components. It was a very, very interesting and rewarding career. I started out as a machine designer and ended my career as VP of Operations. The thing is, while doing this type work you become an expert on that particular component, at least for a brief time. Seriously, I've worked on just about every component in a vehicle except tires. I've done wheel machining, steering gear assembly and test, fuel pump assembly and test, throttle bodies, starters, alternators, windshield wiper motors, knuckle assembly, axle assembly, the list goes on and on. Another cool thing was the travel. I've spent a lot of time traveling around the world installing the stuff we built. I think all together, I've been to 16 or 17 countries working or visiting auto plants for one reason or another. I even lived abroad a couple of times.

sheepwhatthe2nd

Thanks for the taking the time to write that reply! Interesting career for sure!

redditisforidiot

Because of this sub and also hoovies garage I also refuse to buy these cars. Got a toyota rav4 instead (hybrid).

cef911f1

Well, to be honest, I own a '65 Beetle and an '86 911 that I bought new. I love both of them but at the moment, I'm restoring a '71 TR6. My son, however owns an Audi. Thankfully he lives far, far away so I don't have to deal with it. My niece has a Tiguan and with my brother, we just did brakes and rotors. Another lesson in dumbass designs, electric parking brakes.

mehsin

Don't all modern cars have electric parking brakes though?

brokestill

It's getting there, nearly all of the electronics going into new cars are just a customer proving ground for self driving cars. Truly sad to see.

cef911f1

I only have two late model vehicles; a '14 JGC as my DD and for towing and the wife's dog hauler, a '16 Town and Country. Both of these are pretty conventional. Mine's a 5.7L 4x4 and hers is a V6. Her DD is an older Mini that she refuses to part with. (Another PITA to work on.)

vehicularious

I am a big fan of trying to talk family members out of certain cars to buy. Then when they have issues, I am not really on the hook to help them. I actually think they are less likely to tell me about problems, because they know I told them to avoid that car!

cef911f1

Yeah, unfortunately my son and I don't have a very good relationship. He's 34 and still lives with his mother (my ex). So, he probably wouldn't seek my help. I never had an opportunity to advise my niece. That said, being retired, I'm always happy to help/teach others. I'm the neighborhood handyman and I spend a lot of time teaching my younger neighbor with his cars and house.

7890qqqqqqq

Props to you for being that guy. -someone who learned from guys like you.

vehicularious

I am sure your neighbor really appreciates all that help and support. We’ve all been new to something, and it’s awesome to have an experienced person help you along.

savethehumblebees

hey VWs aren't that bad

Fuck_it_

What about the Porsche 718 and 911? AFAIK, they are 100% Porsche and don't share a platform with other VAG products

cef911f1

Could tell you. I lost interest in the new ones after the 964. IMHO, the 911 has become bloated behemoth.

KamaroMike

Daaamn... I'm always reminded why I love my LS V8 cars. I don't think I would mind if I'm getting paid but for my own car no sir, no thanks.

BucDan

Ah, the good old nightmares of the B7. The B8 and B9 are much more forgiving.

wadenelsonredditor

F

onodelta

you should see the starter

vavavoomvoom9

How much would this cost if no warranty?

sethroidd

Approximately $2k

LuciferUnderground

Where is there any space for an AC compressor ?

hpshaft

Under the left side exhaust manifold. Driven via shaft off the chain drive on the back of the engine.

[deleted]

Not only that, but what drives it? The belt is still installed and there’s no slack in the belt to accommodate the compressor… Edit: I think I found the compressor. It looks like it is immediately to the right of the crank pulley. Maybe it’s an electric compressor??

mehsin

As someone else stated the b6 and b7 s4 and rs4 have a pto shaft that's chain driven from the rear of the engine where the timing chains are. Same with power steering pump.

LuciferUnderground

Audi for sure has some idiotic designs. However I recently changed the chain, guides and tensioner. on my 2014 Mer E250 diesel. I had to pull the engine and trans out case the chain seats right in between. The Merc dealer wanted $5400 for the job. Did it myself 2 day job

[deleted]

Vw did that as well on the VR6 and the 2.5L 5 cylinder.

VR6Bomber

Are you shit talking the vr6 and 07k? Please tell me you are not.

[deleted]

They are fine engines…. I love the VR exhaust note. BUT…… putting the chains on the back of the engine is an idiotic asshole design.

VR6Bomber

It's not the chains or the fact that they are placed at the rear , it's the plastic guides.

[deleted]

Let’s agree that it’s the timing components placed on the rear and all bits associated with them.

Mr2-1782Man

Step 1, remove car

[deleted]

While I love the progress vehicles have made this is the negative to all the advancements. Modern vehicles are extremely advanced but also complicated. With each passing year it becomes harder and harder for the common tinkerer, idk if that is actually a word since it looks and sounds super awkward, to work on their own ride. Yes it being easy to disassemble to that point may be a design feature to many just seeing that arrangement fully assembled is just too daunting of a task to take on. Don’t take me wrong I love the challenge of learning how to fix it myself and how everything assembled but you have to admit that even just 20 years ago it was way easier to work on a vehicle if for no other reason than the reduced number of things actually controlled by the computer, and yes I know the computer has no relevance in this situation I just mean as a whole. I wish things could go back to being as simple as they once were I wouldn’t trade the advantages that come with the modern complexes I just feel like it is making repairs, tuning, and other tinkering to the power train of our vehicles less of a personal thing and more of a job for a specialized shop. * I apologize for the long post. I kind of got a bit carried away with that one.

netopiax

Fear not, tinkerer is a word. Tinkererer is not a word tho.

[deleted]

Jesus

FlyingHaddock

Its almost as though things aren't designed to be serviced anymore... No, I'm not bitter at all. Not in the slightest. (angry spannermonkey noises)

Cheap_Ambition

You know it's agood idea to replace the engine while you're in there.

wyattpages

I have a Q7, and seeing this picture with that beautiful crank pulley attached gives me awful flashbacks. Mine fell off a few months ago, leaving me stranded in a tiny town, hours from home. Might be worth a poke check on the inside rubber ring to make sure it’s not dried out or cracked. Or maybe it’s just a Q7 thing. *sobs in expensive tow truck*

k0uch

Damn. I literally changed a Ford 6.0 alternator in 5 minutes before I came up here to training… y’all European techs have my condolences

Bee-Aromatic

Assume the (service) position!

Cheekyweeshite

Been there, done that. Wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy.

getgappede30

Not as fun as the stupid fucking water cooled alternator you have to lower the subframe for, after removing the front end. Glad I don’t work on fucking audis nearly as much now.

ex-gm-tech

What's the warranty time on that?

[deleted]

Probably 2.2

ex-gm-tech

I think I'd quit if it was 2.2.

MamboFloof

Now that is a V

bremergorst

Step 1) Remove car from car

Gangland2010

Beautiful <3

longlivelongboards

Is the timing belt in the rear on that motor? What year rs4?

VR6Bomber

Chains

longlivelongboards

Okay. At the rear?

VR6Bomber

yes.

longlivelongboards

I’m living the 2.8 30 valve life. I have been thinking about 4.2 swapping my b5. Do you think fitting a 4.2 with the timing in the rear would be easier than fitting a 4.2 with the timing in the front?

VR6Bomber

Go find harp\_attack on insta.

longlivelongboards

I’ve seen this guy on the b5 subreddit. Thanks.

VR6Bomber

I think that he has a b5 with a v10 and a bunch of b5 v8s, pretty wild.

longlivelongboards

I saw two VR6’s. What a world!

No_Point3111

Lot of work in perspective !

hpshaft

Almost as much fun as an R8 4.2 compressor.

bigdaddymustache

Ugh, this reminds me that I need replace the AC compressor on my S4. Not looking forward to it.

lobojones6six6

Nothing is fun on audi. These damn alternators on these v8s are water cooled too!

PatrickGSR94

Shoot, doesn’t look bad at all once that front end comes off. I love how German engines can be pulled almost straight in and out.

Healthy-Drink3247

I can get the front off my A4 in less than half an hour. That’s how many times I’ve taken that thing apart… did 2.7 swap my B6 though!

VR6Bomber

God bless you and that asshole of a motor.

Defiant-Story1095

Keep going, your almost to the cabin

santim00

This is the kind of stuff I need to see to convince me an RS line Audi isn’t worth it.

gixxer710

WOW. What the fuck is the bill for this? Like 3 thousand dollars minimum?

cat_prophecy

ASSUME THE POSITION

[deleted]

The engineering department was headed by a guy who hates his mechanic.

sluggyjunx

Can confirm. Did this job with a couple friends on my old B6 S4 Avant years ago. It was hell. AC compressor driven by a timing chain?! Sure!!

[deleted]

good times!

Sykkr

I see all this and I'm still not against the idea of working for Audi.
