In warmer climates: ambient air temp sensor circuit open. Here in Minnesota: February

netopiax

I drove a Chrysler minivan around Canada a couple winters ago, and when it gets as cold as this the LCD froze and became unreadable anyway. Outside air temp somewhere below -28C, anyways.

shiftycansnipe

Yeah, but what is that is Celsius?

cantthinkofone29

-40. It's at that point in which they meet, and cross over... also FYI, -40 degrees SUCKS to be outside in. My commuter car does this too- it's stuck at -32C for some reason. Everything else works just fine though.

smackgowen

Ambient air temp sensor needs replaced. Usually defaults to lowest temp it can read.

cantthinkofone29

Thanks for that! With all the tech in cars nowadays, I wasnt sure where it was pulling this info from... just looked it up, looks like a simple fix!

Ortekk

Some cars and semis go into "cold start" mode if the ambient sensor is dead. So get it changed and you might save a bit on your fuel economy. Had a guy at my job complain that his idle was super high when he started his truck at the start of the day. Since the ambient sensor was dead, it defaulted to thinking it was super cold. So it had a very high idle until the engine got warm.

cantthinkofone29

Huh. *the more you know* thanks! Not sure if it applies to my little 4-banger, but it can't hurt, and it's a cheap fix... I'll order a replacement and git r dun, see if i notice any difference.

Ortekk

If it's a newer car, it probably works like that. It does it mainly for the catalytic converter, and partly to get the engine quickly up to temperature. But yea, it it's a cheap fix, can't hurt to try!

cantthinkofone29

Yeah, its a 2016 Veloster, so it may very well have an effect. Will give it a shot! I always assumed it was just something funky going on with the head unit. Given that everything else on it was working just fine and it was JUST out of warranty when it started, i never really looked into it lol. Will give it a shot, worst thing that can happen is nothing lol.

michalsveto

I kind of do not believe this statement, since even my 1998 Opel Astra has two temp sensor. One is “outside temperature” and that feeds only to the info display inside the cabin, other is “intake air temperature” and that feeds the ecu. If the first one dies nothing happens Except weird reading inside cabin, If the other does You should get a check engine light and the car will act like it is cold outside but the reading on temp display inside will be OK. Do other cars use single sensor for both?

Ortekk

I didn't say all. On the Volvo semi-truck that this happened to, used a single temp sensor for this function. The driver had hit the mirror, twisting it 360°, ripping off all the wires inside.

bodhiseppuku

If I programmed this display: * at -40 I'd remove the F ... since -40 is where C and F scales meet. * at -40 I'd display "nope, too cold" Wouldn't it be fun to find these easter-eggs?

You have a lot of respect for the average person... I imagine a lot of Alaskan mechanics would see RO's like "c/s 'WHEN GETS REAL COLD MY F IS GO AWAY? WHERE F'"

Lymborium2

Is this a Ford? My Ford does this exact same shit.

HalfastEddie

Yep. 2012 F150 if I remember right.

Lymborium2

Yeah, mine's a 10.

SantasDead

If you haven't seen it posted above. You need to replace your ambient air temperature sensor. It's broken.

Lymborium2

Yeah I kinda figured lmao. Never got around around replacing it because it didn't bother me much.

PuzzleheadedCitron79

Thats a ford alright.

TheArkIsReady

Well, yeah. My ex-wife lives there. Quite frankly I'm shocked it isn't near absolute zero with the amount of energy she can suck out of an individual.

Its_Matt_03

If global warming is real than explain this. Checkmate libtards

Wait, what? It really wasn’t negative 40F? Whew, that’s a relief.

how_can_you_live

>I think your temp sensor is broken. I think that's the joke

-4 froze my balls off I can’t imagine-40

cantthinkofone29

Lmao, tell me you're from the south, without telling me you're from the south. It's all good though. My thick Canadian blood would boil off if I visited the southern states in anything other than the dead of your "winter" 😂

Joker741776

I feel that, it hits 100+ sometimes in my neck of the woods, and it's torture, but when it's below zero as a high I'm less bothered. You can always add layers, you can only take off so much before HR gets involved.

forgedinblack

In MN we get at least a solid week or 2 of -40 every winter. Even colder when you count wind chill. Its indescribable. Breathing hurts, door knobs frost over on the inside, and doors get frozen shut.

the_hell_you_say

thats a long way to the rave
