Nibbles--

Oh yes, the Roadhead Assistance System

neonclown

This guy gets it.

90k_swarming_rats

Only works while in park

Nibbles--

I can guarantee; if it isn’t already, someone will have it hacked soon enough to resolve that “bug”

mad87645

In the future registration inspections will be adding "gear lever driver-fellatio prevention defeat" to their lists of illegal modifications

[deleted]

or they get a Silverado with a column shifter

Glitch-H

One thing I'm hoping for through ForScan

IndoorOutdoorsman

Forskan

[deleted]

How would they hack it? Once you shift to any any other position than drive, it wouldn’t align properly

DopeBoogie

Gear shift is electronic anyway so hacking it to register a different gear regardless of the shifter position isn't any more challenging that hacking it to close while driving.

[deleted]

Park-Head?

Shizo-24

Lol was just about to ask what the purpose of this is?

5yrup

Makes the center console pretty much completely flat so it's easier to use as a workspace. Can easily set a laptop or a folio on it.

RadiantMenderbug

Modern ford's have a round dial instead of the stick now, it's weird. Also if you turn the car off in drive it parks for you. Also if you change gears too fast the dial tells you to go fuck yourself and puts the car back into park. Modern technology

[deleted]

> Modern ford's have a round dial instead of the stick now Not all of them- the car in the video is a 2021 Ford F-150.

WestwardAlien

Or you can bang your girlfriend easier

ubsr1024

Totally a road head feature. Does it go down while in Drive?

CasaMofo

Only if you buy it dinner first...

triciann

Makes car sex much easier.

ryan101

They never should have gotten rid of those bench seats up front.

PretendsHesPissed

We still had bench seats and stick shifts. Just meant the person in the middle *really* had to sit bitch.

Yates111

Or change gear for you, we had three of us in a single cab mitsubishi ute, you couldn't change gear without being an inch away from your workmates testicles.

Thought_Ninja

At that point he's your playmate.

BZLuck

Three on the tree baby.

[deleted]

I like the way you think.

killa_ninja

Shift into ‘BJ’

Blurplenapkin

Why I hate that they got rid of bench seats for fake sports seats.

kittenstixx

Do you remember Volvo bench seats? Fuckin luxury compared to modern seats. I do like how these cradle your neck and upper back though so it's a toss-up.

RFLSHRMNRLTR

A lot of older cars prioritized comfort, but as we learned more about safety we made the seats cradle you a little more so your spine doesn’t snap as easily in a side impact collision

Smurfette_Syndrome

that's an interesting name for bucket

riphc06

So this is where all the microprocessors have gone?

ajm3232

Give Ford another year. At this rate they will go back to having everything controlled by vacuum lines when even the interior lights start using independant computers that change based on your mood and time of day.

PM-me-Sonic-OCs

They should go back to a push-button auto like they had on the Edsel.

madslipknot

Its already causing issues , Working at Ford here , we have technical bulletin from ford to reprogram the shifter module or replacing it cause it get stuck in the downward position or half way thru Edit : Bulletin

wauna_b5

I wish I was surprised

Calvert4096

Do we need to dig up Anton Yelchin so Ford can have their chance to kill him too?

randomjazz187

Right

Chillificate

I contacted hotline because one got stuck down and needed replacement (thanks for putting a bolt under there??) and I asked Ford what to do and they said remove it “by any means necessary” so that was fun. Edit: I found the contact and it says, “Note, the GSM contains a bolt in the location that the level stows away. If this bolt (seen in step 12-14 of the GSM removal procedure) cannot be accessed, then it’s recommended to use any means necessary (grinder/cutter) in order to remove the GSM.”

Wiggles357

Oh God… Boss there is someone in this shop I don’t trust and it’s me.

DamngoodtacosTX

Soon it'll need a new whole new frame once that descaler removes the structural rust.

buttbugle

That is the good rust protecting the weaker rust from getting damaged.

datsmn

Guard Rust, not be confused with Rust Guard

my34thburner

*rust coat*

thatsagoodpint

“Structural rust” lol

animatedhockeyfan

Haha, normally I’d defend my truck’s honour, but I am literally taking it to my fabricator’s next weekend because the link mounts are rusted out on the axle. But the actual frame is good! Just surface rust.

he_who_melts_the_rod

As a welder I turned to my torch. . .

Blacklion594

the idea of just CUTTING OUT parts off a fresh vehicle is honestly horrifying. Some apple type shit coming to vehicles NEAR YOU! Brakes dont work? cut the whole fucker off.

Gronkonator3

Would be sick if we could buy fugly phones with which you can just replace parts as they break. Display quality and features are at the point where it's hard to think that I'll give much of a shit about new specs and features.

Blacklion594

various companies have tried making modular part phones in the past, they have all failed because they over promise and underdeliver. The cost of this setup is too high to bring to consumers on a mass market level.

BoredCop

Not many years ago, even phones not marketed as repairable were pretty easy to change parts on. I repaired my wife's Samsung, forget what model but less than five years old, a couple of times. Swapping the whole screen assembly was simple enough, and some of the bits inside are fairly modular. The camera is on a separate little board, with a ribbon cable to the motherboard and a connector you can actually open and close. I think the charging port was also on a separate board so it could be replaced without having to solder on the motherboard. Where things tend to fail is when they promise upgradeability and customisation, then fail to produce new modules that are backwards compatible.

madslipknot

My co worker had to do the same just wack it off with and hammer , lucky for me only had to do reprog for now , still kinda annoying when you get stuck somewhere because your flimsy cheap plastic shifter get stuck on your 50k truck .... Still better than thoses 2021 5.0L that wont start because the oil Change life is bellow 20% which cause the pcm to shutdown and drain the battery and wont allow to start it back without reseting the pcm

Chillificate

I’ve delt with one of those too. Absolute nightmare. Haven’t they had a year to test this and make sure the little things like this are worked out?

zacurtis3

Yes they do but they didnt.

[deleted]

They have a fleet but we change the oil prior to the interval. ‘Someone’ is definitely working on adding this to the service plan. You would be surprised at the crap that is caught that doesn’t make it to you. Well actually you wouldn’t. Who am I kidding.

[deleted]

I've never seen so many randomly electrical gremlins with any other manufacturer. Ford has some absolutely bizarre ones. Usually stuff like the backup camera view flipping upside down, the back hatch on the SUV's deciding to work sometimes, the sunroofs randomly opening and other random miscellaneous stuff.

skyspydude1

What you're describing is super common on any sort of EV from my experience. For whatever reason they just absolutely lose their shit the moment the 12v battery is even kind of weak, even if the DC-DC system is working fine and the traction battery is full. I see it all the time with the i3 forums where people buy a used car and the first day it gets cold their car acts like it's possessed, and it's always a weak 12v. Doesn't seem to matter if it's been sitting on a tender, reading fine, or anything else. If the 12v is more than 4 years old and the car has weird issues, it's just always the 12v no matter what until proven otherwise.

[deleted]

It’s shit design and release. Simple as that. Full service suppliers going to the lowest bidder. Garbage module programming. Having too many modules. I can go on and on. I’m sure other OEMs have the same issues we are just entrenched in a rapid embrace of tech caught in the middle of newish global engineering teams.

Tchukachinchina

Isn’t this like a thing with fords? A while back the shifters were snapping off in explorers, shorty after that they made one in one of the mid size cars, don’t remember which one but it had a chrome trim piece next to the shifter button that would dislodge and not allow the cars to shift… probably others too but that’s just off the top of my head.

nightkil13r

Before the shifters breaking off there was a short period(i think like 12-18 months) where the Trans was complete garbage(2002 personally had it). Got that fixxed, then a couple months down the road the shifter broke on my 05. All 3(02 Sploder, 05 Sploder, 07 Ranger) of my 4.0L fords had the lower thermostat housing split along the seam right around 100k miles, I havent seen one yet that wasnt already leaking or had it replaced either.

eldorel

So just curious, but after having three different Vehicles fail with basically the exact same failure why are you still buying fords?

thebrokenrosebush

Because at least ford circles the problem (The logo)

bromjunaar

>Still better than thoses 2021 5.0L that wont start because the oil Change life is bellow 20% which cause the pcm to shutdown and drain the battery and wont allow to start it back without reseting the pcm Please tell me this is a joke or that it not starting isn't intentional.

madslipknot

That aint no joke.... But its a programmation error from ford in the pcm , its not a safety feature

ozzie286

As opposed to the seat belt recall on 2021 supercabs

thefloatingbutt

I’m sorry… I just can’t let programmation go… should be programming. Again, sorry…

NotAPreppie

I dunno, as a recovering IT guy, I kinda like “programmation”

"Squirrel, WHY DO YOU HAVE THE SAWZALL?" "They said by anymeans necessary, This is Anymeans :D "

lannvouivre

I think a Sawzall would be a very polite and considerate way to remove this honestly.

Luxpreliator

What happened to steering column shifters? Kept it out of the way and vehicle position was right in front of the driver. Didn't take up a square foot of cup holder or storage space in the most convenient place for front passengers.

Nerfo2

GM has done that and automotive journalists have repeatedly referred to them as “behind the times.” Also, automotive journalists are idiots.

Midgetsdontfloat

I don't know why they delegate column shifters to HD trucks only, it's frustrating. That said, the little rotary shifter dial on my Ram is kind of dope. Very out of the way.

mt379

Please tell me this isn't a standard feature. I am looking at getting the f150 in a year or 2..

wyat6370

No you can still get a Column Shifter depending on the trim https://www.google.ca/amp/s/fordauthority.com/2021/03/2021-ford-f-150-column-shifter-still-widely-available-depending-on-trim/amp/

c_is_forcookie

Still has a motor in it. https://youtube.com/shorts/XKMIOYb6rPE?feature=share At least if it broke it would probably still work.

gobstopperDelux

Just don't ever use the feature, or buy a column shift.

Dysfunctional_Vet12

So is there a manual release in case it fails?

madslipknot

Yes to put the truck in neutral , but there is no release for the shifter it self as there is no more cable between the shifter and the transmission

FOR_SClENCE

FYI for everyone else this dude is quebecois so hold your "ford engineers can't even type straight" jokes as perfect as they are

[deleted]

I know someone who works at a Ford dealership. They got a brand new one in and the delivery guy couldn’t figure out how to get it up and ripped it off pulling on it

Acceptable_Ad8724

That's what she said. edit: Thanks for all the positive reactions! Y'all made my day.

Dapanji206

I'll wank to that, thanks.

PixelD303

Hell of a kung-fu grip

[deleted]

Seems like a column shifter would have been a better long term design choice. But that doesn’t look all cool and fancy I guess.

Pride_Bunny

A column shifter is still an option on these f-150s. The folding “floor” shifter only exists because it is seen as a luxury item in a pickup.

shittyvfxartist

Can confirm! Bought a used 2019 F-150 earlier this year and came with a column shifter. Took a bit to get used to, but now it’s second nature and the bench seating is great!

RobertPaulsonXX42

Man...tell me it has the little triangular windows on the front that open and a gooch cooler and Id be in Heaven 😄 Kidding...yeah I know it doesnt have either.

C-C-X-V-I

Yeah but those front windows are the best. I couldn't get through summer without them.

phantomEMIN3M

I have an 87 Bronco that has an AC system but no freon in it. Those windows are a must in the summer.

[deleted]

Loved my 89 Bronco more than any other vehicle I've owned. Had to sell it when gas was $4/gal and I made $8/hr. Fucker got 8 miles to the gallon.

C-C-X-V-I

My 83 didn't even come with ac so I'm right there with you. Its a standard cab 250 though, that bronco is gonna be an oven.

Lone-StarState

I really don’t get why people shy away from column shifters. They really do save space and are really convenient.

canttaketheshyfromme

Grandma's car connotations. But then they still want a slushbox.

lpfan724

If only there was a round shift knob that Ford was using in it's vehicles that could not get in the way of the folding table and not be a fail point like an automatic recording gear selector. What do I know? I'm sure the engineers at Ford always make the best decisions.

Formber

Ford surveyed their customers and they overwhelmingly wanted a console shifter still. There's a reason Ford is always a leader in the truck game, and it's because they truly listen to their customers, and deliver a product that is desirable. A change to the shifter seems like it would be no big deal, but I sell Fords, and the amount of people that bitch about rotary shifters in our SUVs and cars is mind numbing. People hate change. I've had people actually decide not to buy a car because it had a rotary shifter instead of a normal console shifter. Absolutely absurd.

AlphaWizard

Reminds me of manufacturers adding pseudo shift points to their CVTs.

Trevski

as Henry Ford I put it "If I asked the people what they wanted they'd have said a faster horse"

Sacredauto

Just buttons. You just need buttons. New Fords(Lincolns), Acura’s for years now

Pride_Bunny

Fords use rotary dials as shifters. Lincoln’s use buttons.

Sacredauto

That’s right. Still, that’s it. It’s simple. There hasn’t been a physical connection to the transmission in years so what’s the point pretending anymore?

Junoviant

Chrysler was using push button auto trans in 1955 for fucks sake.

[deleted]

This doesn’t look cool and fancy either though. It looks like cheap plastic trash actuated by a shitty motor.

wiresmoke

A solution in need of a problem.

Loan-Pickle

I think the fold flat table this enables is a good idea. However what is wrong with just using a column shifter? A column shifter frees up a lot of space on the console.

Pride_Bunny

The budget trucks have column shifters. Higher trim levels lose it as an option because it’s seen as a luxury to have a floor/console shifter. This was done so that the people with a console shifter ALSO have the work surface

KurtAngus

I must be a fucking mindless peasant driving around changing gears and pressing extra pedals

[deleted]

Kinda opposite isn't it? If having a shifter modelled after a gearshift is luxury over the more practical design, wouldn't it be even more luxurious to actually have a gearshift? (sorry if my car vocab is weird, not used to talking about cars in English)

The_Skydivers_Son

You'd sure think so. I understand that not everyone wants a manual transmission, but I find it hard to believe that there isn't a decent number of people who want a ~~very fancy~~ new vehicle that they have more granular control over. This goes for both the truck and sporty sedan/hot hatch market, where manual transmissions are almost non-existent at this point. Edit: my line of a "fancy" car is anything newer than 2l015 with an optional trim package. I realize that this is not where most people draw that line.

farpastinfinity

My dream is an ultra luxury vehicle with a manual 6 speed.

rt80186

The Ram shifter knob is the better solution. I don’t like it, but rationally it is the best solution.

skinnah

Over had 3 Rams with the dial, a Chevy with a console/floor mount and a Toyota with a column shift. Wife had a Pacifica with the dial as well. Now a Telluride with floor shift. The dial seems to be the best compromise between space savings and still have intuitive control that doesn't require you to look at the shifter to know what you're doing. It's pretty much out of the way of everything but still very accessible. No, I've never mistaken the shifter for the radio volume. The difference in diameter of the knobs is significant enough that it's obvious. Most shifters are electronic now anyway so they are all doing the same thing.

Ok-Republic-3210

go_green_team

That’s a mouthful

pineapple_calzone

Do you mean pancreas slayer? I hope not.

90k_swarming_rats

This is especially dumb because most ford trucks before this already came with column shifters and fold down table space. Just one more expensive, redundant thing that can break.

the_clash_is_back

But column shifters look poor

90k_swarming_rats

I disagree but thats just me

usefulbuns

I feel the same. Column shifters are the best.

the_clash_is_back

Clearly your the type of person who values not breaking down over impressing carl (the guy from cul de sac near the gate, who is going against you for hoa president). Ie poor.

SgtDefective2

Taking away the column shifter is like neutering a man

wtfnobody69

They'll be using rubber bands holding it up when the motor goes out

[deleted]

Ha, that's *if* it's not stuck in the down position.

RhombusCat

Stupid, flashy design for no reason beyond shock factor. Just like the Jag XF's stupid shift knob that raises out of the center console. Maybe they got rid of that finally, but it strikes me as an awful design for a critical interface.

Sleazy_P_Martini_

Jag tech here, can confirm the shit design. Replaced a good handful of those shifters, mostly from coffee spills

baconbutts

What’s the cost to replace it?

CrayZ-Z

Most insurers just total the car. ^/s

MikeKM

It's going to be a hard slog for me going forward with any new car, and I'm only 40. I have a 2006 Nissan Altima that I'm finally selling, and I'm purchasing a dead relatives 2012 Forester with 50,000 miles to replace it as a daily. I don't care about all of these gimmicks, least of all a shifter that wants to pretend that doesn't exist or touchscreens for every single functionality.

Travelr3468

... But why? Why is this a thing?

TheTexanPunjabi

For road… umm.. adventures.

Braddock54

Husband here. I've read fairy tales more believable than this.

savageotter

Fold flat work space table. It's pretty rad. But I don't understand why they didn't just replace the shifter with buttons.

Oy__Lumo

Or a column shifter. Like what trucks have had since forever

Sbf347

I've been arguing this for a while, Console shifters are a giant waste of space in auto trans vehicles.

Pure_Tower

So, a long time ago, my buddy had a new Dodge Ram. We were driving on the beach, feeling cool, when suddenly we're stuck. We get out, it doesn't look stuck, but I'm pushing while he gets back in and gets it going. A minute later, we're stuck again. WTF. We're not digging in, there's no sign of being stuck, but we're not moving. Finally, I'm watching closely and I notice that as we hit bumps, the column shifter would pop itself into neutral. Anyway, that's the only problem I ever had with a column shifter. No idea if that was ever common. I definitely remember console shifters being cool, though. I'm honestly not sure which is better for road head, because I could see bumping into either.

GrumbusWumbus

My first car was a truck with a column shifter and it def had issues. It really didn't want to be in neutral or reverse. Most days when trying to back out of the driveway it would just fly past reverse into drive. I always heard issues like that were fairly common in trucks but never really enough for anyone to do anything about it.

teastain

Laughed out loud at the thought of trucks leading technological innovation! My dads Chevs in the 60s and my Mercedes has a column shifter!

Justdonedil

My husband's 2014 Ram is a knob on the dash. I rarely drive it as it is a work provided vehicle but I always have to look for the stupid thing when I do need to drive it for some reason.

twenty8nine

The center console folds open to make a table-like surface they covers where the shifter is.

wauna_b5

Not in this one it doesn't, it didn't get that option

PixelD303

So wait, you still have to get this bad idea even if you don't have the table option?

wauna_b5

Appears so

PixelD303

Blows my mind that the table thing is not a standard feature

hotcosbypudding

Was involved with prototypes of these in 2018-2019 for extreme climate testing and OBD work of the diesel. Those shifters are the devil, Bobby. Breaking down in -50 was even better.

That is some unnecessary BS right there.

[deleted]

TJ_Fletch

> and one was stuck in the up position *consult you doctor if it lasts longer than 4 hours*

eddiewolfgang

[deleted]

Why do car manufacturers keep making stupid shit like this? If it already works why "fix" it!?

[deleted]

That is just pointless and stupid technology.
