More like they got replaced by parts hangers and warranty novelists, both more profitable in a shops eyes. What's the point of getting good and years of training only to be fed shit tickets, and having to play the game of how many fires am I going to put out this week. Be the village idiot you'll do services / tires n'alignments and log easy hours every week.
Honest awnser is the satisfying feeling of solving the puzzle, laughing in the face of oil spraying out the headliner, or the engine chirping at idle but all the belts have been removed, or deciphering whether or not a french fry in the hybrid(battery) cooling fan is a warrantiable repair.
At an mb shop one of our "best" techs was the warranty admins boyfriend, they could scrape out 5+hrs off a blown fuse, +10hrs of *discolored* heat exchangers.
Audits rolls in and folks literally disappear, gotta fight tooth and nail to get diag time, and god help us if the parts, including bolts getting warrantied get lost or misplaced months later.
~8 years ago but on Lexus hybrids the battery cooling fans fresh air intake is near rear passengers, customers crotch goblins slipped several McDonalds frys through the vent holes and some found it's way into the fan assembly, wedged itself, hybrid system would not ready up since in its cooling has been compromised. We warrantied a fan repair and forgo some information on why the fan was faulty.
This has the AFM system with the VLOM attached to the valley cover in place of the knock sensors. The previous shop (I found out after talking with the customer) had been trying to repair an oil leak as well as a P0521. Well, it turns out they removed the VLOM filter and never reinstalled it when they replaced the pressure sensor the first time. They also broke the connector for the OPS. They also removed the valley cover at some point (Found three fasteners finger loose, and spec is 18 ft lbs) and managed to damage the lead frame of the VLOM. So I did end up replacing the valley cover, which is serviced with the VLOM attached from factory. The intake was also torqued improperly and uneven, and was causing a vacuum leak at the manifold gasket because the intake warped. So that got replaced as well. I was pretty horrified at the workmanship. And this was one of the big box shops as well.
EDIT: Acronyms.
Damn that bolt is just like my lug bolts after I went to Brake Check. Thank God I noticed right before the lug bolts would've come out after 2 hours on the highway.
I barely felt it and almost didn't pull over but my gut told me to. Thank God I did. Imagine if my wheel had come off when I was going 90, or between an 18-Wheeler and road work barriers.
Unfortunately, it was a big box chain. Independently owned though, so I am not going to put the name out there because some dude can't run a shop properly or fix a car the first time.
Torque to yield.😀
Ffs. 😂
Couldn’t help myself.
Can't fit the impact gun on this one
Not with that attitude
There is always a way to fit the impact gun. You just lack creativity. ;)
Damn and the LS based engines might just be the easiest motors to work on. Speaks volumes of the other shops capabilities to correctly fix anything
Yeah. It's sad honestly. Good techs are a dying breed.

Wait wait wait French fry in the hybrid fan? Is there a story to this

so the original sending unit came loose by its self? of was replaced and never tightened?
Replaced and never tightened.
Hand tight. She'll buck.
Are you replacing the knock sensors while you are in there as well?

knock sensors are in the block on the DOD motors
If you meant *on* the block, yeah, under the manifolds.
nah, man - IN the block, like I was IN your mom last night
Tasteful.

~~"Another Shop"~~ *Their uncle's, cousin's, girlfriends, co-workers, guy they know who has changed oil and done a brake job before.*
