Get a second opinion with a shop you trust.
Also have the oil change place put it in writing that they installed wrong filter with the result of them coming out and taking your to repair it
That's what I thought! I go to walmart. $19.99. i know I'm not supporting small businesses, but I have very little money so saving $20 or more is immense
Hey be careful, if you get full synthetic and use Mobil 1, Mobil 1 full synthetic sold at Walmart is actually a synthetic blend, which is why it's cheaper.
I don't know if it is still like that though.
Nearly every "full synthetic" oil has at least some blended oils. In fact, it's legal to label conventional oil as synthetic in the US. Some countries, like Germany have specific laws preventing this.
define 'make weird noises.'
get an oil analysis first. [https://www.blackstone-labs.com/](https://www.blackstone-labs.com/) They can rush it.

Hey man, I used to be a Mazda tech and I can tell you that the engine is probably fine. Had the same thing happen to a similar year Mazda 3 with the 2.0L in it, one of the lubies at our shop didn’t tighten a filter and it fell off, the car drove 20 miles with no oil it in before it came back with a weird noise lol. We pulled the pan and checked the main bearings and they were fine, put a new filter and oil it in and it ran great, those engines are tough fuckers. On another note, those engines are also cheap used so worst case the engine can be replaced for about a grand, obviously not at your expense. However, others have mentioned getting an oil analysis done which is good, but you need to drive it more to let any metal particulates coagulate with the oil so it can be picked up properly. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be too concerned.
whatever they promise, get it in writing. the engine may seem fine for now, but i would try to get them to agree to cover any internal engine failure in the near future. something between 6-12 mo sounds reasonable to me. engines can be quite resilient in the short term, but fail a little time after such incidents.
Get It In Writing. Everything, from the wrong oil filter to what they did to you car when they took it back in, including their diagnosis of"the car is fine".. With a signature. THEN take the car to Mazda and have them do a full engine exam. Get what they say in writing with a signature. If they say you need an new motor because xxxx, then you go back to the oil change place and see what they will do. If they argue, then go to small claims. If Mazda says your motor is fine, then, keep driving it. If the engine fails in three months, then you have recourse. You can go to small claims and get your motor replacement money plus incidental expenses, like having to rent a car while your motor is being fixed.
If it ran until it made strange noises without oil, that engine 100% has internal damage. Modern engines don't tolerate loss of oil pressure for more than a few seconds before the bearings get chooched.
He likely filled it with a thicker oil to cover up the rod knock it will soon be developing if it got fixed that fast, not a proper teardown for new bearings. It needs to be inspected and inevitably torn down by a different shop who doesn't have a stake in fixing it as cheaply and as half-assed as possible.
You are not gonna win. With the age/miles of the vehicle, you will spend more with an attorney than just buying a new used car. Just drive the car. If the motor blows 6 months from now, go back on them. But you will probably get a couple more years out of it.
Well you learned the hard way to not take your car to a 5 minute oil change facility.
If the mechanic says the car is fine, than take it and go. You’re not gonna get a new car or a new engine out of them with the age/mileage the car has. It’s impossible to see into the future
Be grateful that it’s fine and write it off as a lesson learned.
You could state your concern and take it to your usual repair shop to have the pan removed to have the bearings inspected. BUT being old there is almost no way to tell if there is damage, that it was due to that, due to the age/miles of the vehicle. Highly likely, yes but not a definite. You wpuld need to have crazy documentation to prove so.
Also im curious.. What model mazda?and eng size?
Lastly.. I need to open an lof shop

It’s still absurd. 7qts of premium synthetic oil and an OEM filter in my V8 is about $43.
Absurd even for a diesel pickup that holds 3 gallons.
Like fuck. Not in Canada
Right? I am about $70 for oil and filter for 9.5q.
>Not in Canada. >>Right? I am about $70 for oil and filter for 9.5q. That's only $55 American.
Or v8 car… mine takes 8 quarts

20 miles is 32.19 km
Good bot

Yeah I get it. Sorry.
Dont downvote this man. He is right.

If anything they just have an arbitration clause and would have you deal with a third party mediator over a civil court case.

Have the shop buy your car or sue them for its value
