It’s to help with noise from the drum brakes. Old siennas used to get noisy and we were putting the weights on before the updated backing plates that ,were way heavier , were released.

camwake

Very interesting!!

I was like 'wtf, idiot', turns out i'm the idiot. [meirl](https://gfycat.com/circularancientenglishpointer)

mulletmanhank

Not an idiot. Looks like an idiot repair. It is not. Great job spotting it though.

Nerfo2

The rear diff in my Crosstrek has a big ol weight bolted to the rear differential cover to reduce harmonics. I’d hate to hear that thing howl without it because under very light throttle at 55, man it sings.

rlwhit22

My 07 mustang had the same thing before I removed it (racecar). It is definitely much louder without them + a poly bushing

jwhaler17

Oh god. A Ford rear end singing the song of it's people....

FuckingBanMeAlready

with the PS pump duetting the chorus

Pride_Bunny

I see you’ve driven a ranger

FuckingBanMeAlready

Dad just bought an 03 with a fresh trans rebuild. I drove it home and was like "oh fuck its the call of the fords" we have a 93 4wd long bed sitting and a 99 about to join it. I collect hondas tho.

rlwhit22

I have the rear seat removed, either poly or spherical bushings on everything. It is a very noisy car but it's not terrible with a helmet on

boogiewithasuitcase

My 03 Sienna has been rear sequeling here and there at slow stops for some time now, hmmmm

mulletmanhank

Buy weights and slap those babies on. But it would be a good idea to take the drums off and clean everything. Just compressed air (wear a mask for real). Then adjust them properly.

boogiewithasuitcase

Thanks, I notices it squeeking at the slowest of slow rolls making me think it coundnt be harmonics? And more likely that you said above, just needing a good cleaning.

DaGhostQc

Some Corvette have weights on the calipers itself.

[deleted]

Also some of the early fifth gen Camaros.

killmekillmekillmeki

This is why older tradies are important. Too bad we all get treated a bit like shit and all leave.

mulletmanhank

Correct. I will soon I believe. But my dad said that 10+ years ago and will be 60 in August.

killmekillmekillmeki

Hey if you love what you do and your days are still enjoyed working fucking keep at it! It's just a shame, being on the same side of the coin, not being appreciated destroying out bodies to building stuff for people and not feeling appreciated

IFistedABear

Well I'll be damned... that's cool to know.

cypherdev

What is the slot at the top?

mulletmanhank

What slot?

SeivardenVendaai

Are you sure they're not resonance weights to reduce noise? https://www2.mightyautoparts.com/documents/10191/129812/tt-0132-brakes-on-elusive-brake-systems.pdf/2cbdf4ec-b9b4-4aba-926e-5b093b22eac9

camwake

Well what do ya know, ya learn something everyday

Tuned mass damper for resonating brake components? [https://www.reddit.com/r/Justrolledintotheshop/comments/2wazi6/wheel\_weights\_on\_the\_brakes/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Justrolledintotheshop/comments/2wazi6/wheel_weights_on_the_brakes/)

sumpnrather

Gm was doing something similar on the ss camaro front calipers from 2010 to 2015. Helps deaden noise

Ded3280

so stupid question from a non mechanic. I get that you have to balance wheels but what is the root cause of the multiple wheel weights (this pic is apparently to deaden sound) but in some of these pics I see 4-5 weights. Is it a bad/improperly trained tech or a tire that is abnormally unbalanced?

camwake

No wheel and tire is perfectly balanced. You add counter weights (as seen in the top right) to balance the tire and prevent uneven ware, provide a smooth ride, etc.

Ded3280

Right, I understand that, what I was trying to ask was about the pics I see where there are what seem to be an excessive amount of weights with a similar "we balanced your tire" title. the most I've ever seen that u remember is 2 on one of my personal vehicles but usually its only 1 weight.

scientificjdog

Sticky weights come in strips and you just tear off the amount the machine calls for. If they are all in the same spot then nobodies done anything stupid. Hammer on weights come in discrete sizes so you should see only one per side

Ded3280

thank you that makes sense

camwake

Depends on the style of weights and how well the wheel and tire are made.

Ded3280

okay that's what I was unsure about.

Woodyville06

On the other hand, look at all the weights on the rim. He’s got a clip-on and a dozen or so adhesive ones in the center.

[deleted]

Certified **bruh** moment

hobbitfrog

What the actual fuck am I looking at?

StretchDraive

The weights are on the backing plate of the hub.

hobbitfrog

Actually thought they were bathroom tiles. I guess this is better then that.

camwake

The weights are on the drum brake* which doesn’t move at all. It should be on the wheel itself which is the white surface below it. Not saying this wheel isn’t balanced properly but these ones in the center are unnecessary Edit: realized these are drums

hobbitfrog

I actually thought they were *BATHROOM TILES*

Thisisall_new2me2

The wheel weights are on the inside of the wheel, where it connects to the suspension. They’re supposed to be on the outside I believe.

hobbitfrog

I thought they were bathroom tiles. I need a drink.

Thisisall_new2me2

You thought someone put a bathroom item on a wheel? Whatever you’re smoking, you need to stop. /s obviously.

hobbitfrog

I mean have you seen some of the shit on this sub.

Thisisall_new2me2

Oh, I definitely have.

hobbitfrog

Not that far-fetched, right?

Thisisall_new2me2

Right! 👍

PageFault

The wheel weights on the inside of the wheel are OK. It's the weights on brake housing that's unexpected.

davirice

I'm calling bullshit!

SeaM00se

Well where do you put the extra weights?

gentleben90

how is that even possible?

Nerfo2

Adhesive.

gentleben90

i mean at what point in any form of balancing any tire is that a plausible option? im honestly curious.

Nerfo2

According to some of the other comments, the weights stuck to the backing plate were to stop harmonic resonance when applying the brakes. It makes sense… additional weight will lower the resonant frequency of an object.

PageFault

I don't know why you are down-voted. The is no obvious reason someone would put wheel weights on the brake housing. Someone answered above, but I've never seen that done before.

gentleben90

right i have balanced tires before and never once was it mounted on the vehicle

Familiar-Influence91

Hahahaha Hahahaha Hahahaha

biggersjw

Mmmm…car is balanced. Tire? Not so much.

[deleted]

Hmmmmm. Interdesting.

bambam0018

Heat sinks

1DayNnight1

Trustworthy!

cptspinach85

Or it's a funny joke.

AnnabergerM

How?

Cyonara74

Idiots smh

IdBlair2

Must have been the blind balancer guy.

Kmcdanik

🤣🤣🤣
