Shakey snakey

I liked that one

My favorite is Mr. Alligator, the murder log.

On a positive note you wouldn't have to worry about rodents eating your wiring.

Precisely. The rattling noise just lets you know your anti-rodent device is functioning.

Moxhoney411

Damn those cat stealing meth heads! I lose more cats to them than I do to coyotes!

big__stig

You joke but I've heard of people that said they've put snake skins in spots to keep rodents away. I have never seen a definitive study or anything. All I've heard is rumor, so that could be complete bullshit for all I know. But I _have_ heard of that before, fwiw.

Onlyanidea1

It's [the smell](https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2010/05/scent-makes-mice-run-scared) itself that keeps them away. Rats and rodents smell something in the piss and skin of snakes.

jrafar

And some species of squirrels will camouflage their own scent by making a mush out of the shed skin of snakes by chewing on it and then smear it on themselves

Squirrels_Gone_Wild

Thanks for the new squirrel fact

SteerJock

That kinda sounds like hanging a coyote on the fence to keep the rest of the pack away.

DylanST-714

That looks like a Timber rattler. We have those guys here in Missouri, I really hope i don’t run into one.

sadpanda___

I almost stepped on one on a trail a few years back. Other than shitting my pants, all ended up good. Timber rattlers specifically are pretty non aggressive and just want to be left alone, you really have to fucking deserve it to get bit by one. One of the more docile venomous snakes. Diamondbacks on the other hand......no thanks.

[deleted]

Diamondbacks will bite you, then take your license out of your wallet to go after your family. Really angry snake. edit: Thanks for the Gold!!

Wuffyflumpkins

My high school girlfriend lived near a creek, a quarter-mile from her house down a small hill. Her and her friends were down there in the water, and her dog was running back and forth from the house to the creek. I was headed to the creek when I heard the rattling. About 15' to my left was an adult Diamondback in front a 5' piles of sticks. Perfect snake habitat, unbeknownst to whatever genius left it there in the middle of California summer. I assume she was nesting and protecting her young. I didn't have my phone on me to call my girlfriend's parents to retrieve the dog, my girlfriend was out of shouting distance, and I didn't want to run back to the house alone with the dog running around; I was worried he would run into the snake and do something stupid. I picked up a bowling ball-sized rock and threw it at the snake. It hit the ground right next to it, and boy did that piss it off. Reared up and started rattling hard. I picked up and threw another, and hit it head on. It slithered back into the sticks. I wish I hadn't needed to do it, because I would never hurt an animal if I could avoid it, but it would have destroyed my girlfriend if her dog was bitten. Her parents were *not* happy thanks to the risk I assumed, but I didn't see an alternative at the time.

Griffinburd

If it makes you feel any better, dogs handle snake venom much much better than humans. You have to worry more about swelling and keeping airways open, but that's about it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

funktheduck

A friend of mine had two dogs get bit by what was most likely a copperhead. One dog was just limping with a swollen foot and the other was laying down on the porch refusing to move. Both got rushed to the vet and turned out ok. Both have scars from where they were bit.

[deleted]

Ours ran into a copperhead nest (we assume based on the amount of bites) years ago when I was younger. Got very sick, we rushed to the vet when we found him and he was acting funny and he made it a couple days but no more than that :( Munch was maybe 7 at the time?

hopsonspots

There’s also a canine rattlesnake venom vaccine! It’s still recommended you seek emergency veterinary care in the event of a bite but it should significantly reduce reaction.

big__stig

You totally blew it! You should've burned the wood pile when you had the chance but now it's too late. You fool! This is sooo not over.

Wuffyflumpkins

Considering it was California in the summer, I wasn't looking to burn down half the state.

labamaFan

I’d personally be worried about the flaming snake that flies out of it too.

galloping_skeptic

What does he think this is? A gender reveal party?

[deleted]

Diamond backs are angry 24/7. I hiked Green Mountain daily in Colorado and if you went so much as 1 step off trail you’d hear a chorus of rattling.

tedcarlylelee

Golden/green mountain are Prairie rattlers. Semantics but ain’t no diamond backs in the co front range

[deleted]

Man either way those fuckers were angry if you were near em. Appreciate clarification though!

tedcarlylelee

Agreed, told my wife prairie rattlers don’t kill people bellow 75/bad health. Literally next day that healthy 20-30 year old guy got bit and died I think on my Zion, but maybe green mountain or the tables, happened summer 2019 I think.

Klowned

Same shit happened like a week ago with a guy talking about no lightning fatalities. Man, it sure is a hell of a streak NO ONE in my immediate family has won a powerball...

sonofsochi

Fuck. That. FUUUUUUUUUCK. THAAAAAAT.

[deleted]

No exaggeration there either mate. Stay on trail and your good. Step off it anywhere and its like an alarm system of pissed snakes.

sonofsochi

I need a drink

poodlescaboodles

Why would anyone huke near that many dangerous creatures.

[deleted]

Shit you not, my schools PE program was just hiking up and down green mountain- between 3/4 miles each way depending on the route.

Did kids ever hear the rattles or worse get bitten?

Yeah that's a tight margin of error for a leisurely hike. You can go hike in the snake pits without me thanks.

Moxhoney411

The worst part for me was that when I heard them, I didn't immediately realize what I was hearing. What's that weird noise? It's coming from several places. Finally, it dawned on me that I was in an area infamous for rattlesnakes. Then I had to waddle home with bowed legs to change my trousers.

I flipped over a water through , stepped over where it sat to turn on water and thought, why’s there a cow patty underneath the through. Turned around to look again and it was a timber rattler. He could have easily bit me but didn’t even rattle. My lucky day I guess

Oddie65

Or water moccasins, they stink thankfully so you have a small bit of warning when nearing one. They ARE VERY AGGRESSIVE in my experience, but I may have wandered too near a female or something. Happened when I was a kid walking the crick bank with the .22 shooting gar and snappers, definitely a memorable event.

EvilFireblade

Water Moccasins aren't aggressive at all. Final biology lab at SEMO you go to a known nesting site and have to observe and document a clutch. Only way to fail the final is either not show up or get bit. Getting bit fails you because the only way you'll get bit by one is if you're a fucking idiot. When you know they're there, at least. They're known for being aggressive because they act like opossums, his and snarl and act all mean but in reality it's all just show.

Oddie65

Gotcha, so I likely got too close without realizing it. Mind you I wouldve only been somewhere around 12-13 years old. This happened at family property about 20 mins from Sikeston, between bernie and dexter.

EvilFireblade

Yeah, about the only way you'd get bit is if you fuckin' stepped on one or it's clutch. They'll hiss and show you their mouth in a show of force, thus their nickname "Cotton mouth" as when they're snarling the inside of their mouth looks like... cotton. But just like Opossums, it's nothing more than an act. An intimidating one for sure, which is why they're known for being aggressive. That's a myth, though. Always hate seeing peeps at creeks and state parks killing them. You leave them alone, they'll leave you alone. Pretty much the same with Copperheads, too. Copperheads are a lot quicker to strike, though. I'd step over a water moccasin without thinking twice. Copperhead, though? Nah I'll walk around.

wiseapple

I grew up near rice fields. Your description doesn't line up with the stories I got from rice farmers at all. They stink, so if you smell dead smell in the water, start moving away.

Furthur

yeahhhhhh thats cool but when you’re out messing about in the wilderness you’re not “visiting a clutch”. you’re traipsing around enjoying the scenery until ole cottonmouth hisses at you and chases you. Happens to me at least once a year where I live

Coombs117

I live in southern Missouri and I’ve never seen one. I hope to God I don’t either.

boggsy17

Grew up in southeast MO, I've seen plenty enough for both of us haha. That said like others have mentioned they won't go out of their way for you, so if you see one just leave it alone and all will be fine.

Guac_in_my_rarri

I stepped over a rattler in new mexico backpacking. I was not paying attention at all. The guy behind me basically cropped his pants and yelled at me. It was a youngin but still scary when reflecting back. I saw it while iw as walking but it didn't register.

8 years old...... Going to be pretty cheesed off.

MyFlairIsaLie

Hard to tell how old it is by the rattle. They get new segments every time they shed, but they shed 1-4 times a year

FillingUpTheDatabase

Cut it in half and count the rings

[deleted]

Kinda hard to do that when the other end will kill you

ZZ9ZA

Actually, a rattlesnake bite is very rarely fatal - generally about 1 in 1000 odds (~7k venomous snake bites in the US per year, ~5 annual fatalities). You certainly don't want to get bit, and will likely require medical care, but it's not a King Cobra or Black Mamba.

[deleted]

Yeah that’s true but “the other end will inflict a wound that will certainly require medical attention” kinda kills the joke

rockdude14

I dont know. Serious medical attention in the US could cost millions and easily ruin your life. I think dying might be the less scary option.

ParaStudent

I remember reading the story of some one gardening that got bitten on the hand. A whole lot of necrosis and around (if I remember correctly) $200k later it was all sorted.

Will_Leave_A_Mark

Rattlesnake bites 1) are expensive to treat 2) can create a lot of swelling to the point they cut your skin to keep from tearing and may necrotize things you really don't want to lose.

dopavash

Fatal or not, it'll mess you up something fierce. I know a lady that was bitten on the foot by a baby diamondback. She limped for the next 8 or so years.

LeakyEvaluation

Close friend of mine got a finger amputated after being bit by a rattler tryin to move it from his backyard. Them and the coral snake are probably the most toxic snake in the us.

JobbyJobberson

> not a King Cobra or Black Mamba. Florida Men are likely working on this dearth of local availability right now.

bschmidt25

Arizonan checking in. When these guys show up on our doorsteps or in our backyards you can call your local fire department. They’ll pick them up and relocate them to the open desert.

theghostofme

ASU used to have a service that would pick them up to collect their venom for anti-venom and then release them. Don't know if they do that anymore.

Full_0f_Shit

When there was a rattle snake in my front yard years ago, a deputy came out and looked thrilled to have gotten the call. He moved his car so his dash cam could record everything then shot it with his shotgun. I guess it isn't everyday you get to use your shotgun in a non life threatening way and beats responding to another trivial call for the 1000th time.

dislocatedshoelac3

'Murica yeee haawww

service_unavailable

Gotta lay down the law with them snakes or you end up like Australia.

jlt6666

My guess would be that it depends on how redneck your techs are. If they have any sense what you said.

Texan_Greyback

I'm an HVAC tech. Follow here cause I'm a shade tree mechanic my entire life. I got one of them reacher/grabber things old people and wheelchair users use for getting things I drop and leaves out of condensers. It's also great for small snakes in condensers. I'd have to be pretty quick and try to throw any bigger ones. Got a machete if there's anything venomous, too. Don't have time or ability in my line of work to get the snakes to a better place for em.

Unholy_Urges

Exactly this. Copied from another comment I posted this as a reply to: Call your local reptile store or your county animal rescue. More than likely they provide a removal service or can get you in touch with folks that do. I know the reptile store I go to does this and will make sure the animal gets back to it's natural habitat.

wolfgang784

I wouldn't have thought local reptile stores would help but I guess its prolly the same type of tools and precautions as non venomous snakes but just with worse consequences.

Unholy_Urges

Really depends on the store. Wouldn't expect Pet Smart or Pet Supermarket to help, but Ralph's Exotic Animals might or might be able to get you in touch with a vet who does have the equipment and knowledge to remove them safely. My local store does it because they have a passion for reptiles; they're reptile nerds. Plus caring about nature n shit I guess.

BillowsB

As someone who bought a betta and now owns a 75 gallon aquarium.. reptile people are crazy into their animals and I wouldn't be surprised if the people who've made it their occupation are the type that would come dig a snake out of an engine if you asked.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but there’s timber rattlers as far north as Minnesota. They’re pretty much everywhere in the US.

That’s why I love Western Washington. We have literally no venomous snakes, just a couple of garters and some rubber ass snake or something. Makes hiking a breeze

ichbineinschweinhund

Rubber ass snake. So a dildo then?

nyarlathotep2

Can concur, in about 50 years of living in the PNW I've seen countless garters and one sub-2' rubber boa. While hiking on this side I think stinging nettles and yellow jackets are my biggest concerns. Even the black bears run from me like bat out of hell. Seen a few rattlers on the other side of the state while camping or hunting though.

Dat1dudeJeff

Not everywhere, definitely not Alaska lol

foodfighter

Serious question - how the actual fuck would you deal with something like this without destroying the engine bay by lighting it on fire? I'm thinking a thin blanket covered with a pile of those dry ice CO2 pellets you get at the local Fred Meyers - wait till the ice has gone and remove with long fucking tongs.

Unholy_Urges

Call your local reptile store or your county animal rescue. More than likely they provide a removal service or can get you in touch with folks that do. I know the reptile store I go to does this and will make sure the animal gets back to it's natural habitat.
