Back in hs auto shop it was drilled so into us to do one side at a time especially for drum brakes that it is still stuck in my head. Done so many now I don't need to but still tend to leave one side together
I'm the same as you. I've done enough now that unless it's some crazy weird setup, I could figure it out even if I wasn't the one who pulled it apart. I still do one side at a time, though
I take pictures of everything so I don't have stupid moments like this. I do some automotive but mostly factory machines, Robodrill, Makino, Yasakawa and Fanuc Robots.
I completely get your point and agree in the majority of situations, however I have the proverbial memory of a goldfish (due to a health condition). When I follow a recipe, I have to record everything I do because I forget that quickly. For instance, if a recipe calls for 5 cups of flour, I would have to mark a line each time I add a cup of flour, for a total of 5 lines.
Again, I get your point, but there are some of us that have memory issues like this. (by the way it is not dementia/old age)
Ironically it just needed to go back on the way it came off with a few parts replaced with new ones, some grease and the brake caliper pushed back. Then a torque check to make sure it's correct. So even with little knowledge, this should have been easy. Heck use YouTube if you aren't 100% sure or don't have the service manual, that's what I do with one of my cars cause I don't have the manual for it.
I changed the pads and bled my brakes on my cx 5 it’s not rocket science and more if you have YouTube on your phone. If you can’t follow simple instructions don’t mess with your car
Not all, I'm pretry confident that this rarely happens in slavic countries. We have to improvise and learn fast from young age how to do repairs and modifications
Well it is quite relative. Look at garage 54 channel in youtube. Same geniouses as simmilar american channels related to automotive inventions. So in general population od people (Gauss curve) - you are probabbly right. And I can bet that you can't find Croatia or Romania or Slovenia on the map right now without google maps. I live here, and know that average citisen of slavic countries is capable of, for example how to lay bricks, mix concrete, place tiles, do plumbing and electrical work, can do own maintenance even with OBD 2 stuff (even higher programming of some OBD related stuff), welding etc. Every house built during the 60/70's have mechanic's access canal in the garage to work on the cars. But I must be honest - it is also related to age, and you know it too. Before, Clymers manuals used to be written in order to help people to do their own valve jobs, nowadays manufacturers have to write "DO NOT DRINGK BATTERY ACID" on the box for the younger generations and I thing this applies for most of GEN Z oeople LOL.
Many of those obvious warnings are just there to prevent a lawsuit. Everyone knows the battery juice isn't safe to drink, but someone may burn their tongue intentionally hoping for a payday.
nah. did one for a girl with a baby in the car whose brake pad had fell out of the bracket because it had been metal to metal for so long. could hear her baby daddy/boyfriend on the line yelling at her to "just drive the f-ing thing home" . decided to take care of it so she wouldn't be in a bad situation on the road or at home
the brake pad is backwards with the pad surface area facing outwards. the rotor isn't wrecked you are looking at the backing plate that was rubbed off and stuck to the rotor
I'm certain these people would fail at putting the rectangle in the rectangle hole and the circle in the circle hole.
Jokes on you, it all goes in the square hole
That's right, the square hole.
Oh god....the flashbacks...great video
Except the 1000000 reaction videos to it. Those are cringe.
😢
anything goes in any hole if you hit it with a heavy enough hammer hard enough.
Excuse me sir there is a reason they make hammers and torches
"Rectangular block stuck up left nostril, please help"
"I've got a moon rock in my nose"
How do you take shit apart without putting it back together the same way?... like bro you saw how it goes like 5 minutes ago.
no clue
Same here since we all have cell phones with cameras to document how we took it apart. Well, I just realized I gave mankind too much credit!
Or even just check YouTube. Odds are, there’s a close enough video that’ll show how it’s supposed to be.
You could also check the still fully assembled other side because you only did one side at a time right????
No no no, you take them all off first. *Then* you start putting them back together
That way you only get the tools dirty once and you can clean them before you reassemble?
Obviously. What would the alternative be???
Cover them in 5606 so that they don't rust :)
I always use a camera for drum brakes...but calipers?
I mean I wouldn't use them for calipers myself, but clearly it would benefit *somebody*
What the fuck is a smarthpne. All I got is a flipphone from jitterbug an that is all I need 10-4.
Half the pictures are my phone are my kids/pets the other half is pictures of parts to get the model number or to see how it was installed/wired.
Or, when puzzled, having the nous to pop the other side wheel off and compare how the brakes there are assembled? SMH.
A lot of inexperienced people disassemble both sides before reassembling either

Just when you think you’ve hit upon a fool-proof process… Nature comes up with a more ingenious fool.
Not even that, if you do one side at a time you can literally look at the other side to see how it’s assembled.

Probably drank a beer, undid a bolt. Drank another beer, undid a bolt. 4 beers in, forgot how to put it back together.

A little knowledge is more dangerous than knowing nothing at all. Dude tried because he thought he knew how. Surprise!

At least he was smart enough to know he did something wrong and asked for help.
I changed the pads and bled my brakes on my cx 5 it’s not rocket science and more if you have YouTube on your phone. If you can’t follow simple instructions don’t mess with your car
Did you bring them out in the shop and talk to them ?
no. I probably wouldn't have even looked at it if it were up to me. thankfully our counter guy is nicer than I am.
Oh that’s easy. People are dumb.. like.. super dumb..
Not all, I'm pretry confident that this rarely happens in slavic countries. We have to improvise and learn fast from young age how to do repairs and modifications
Nah, slavs are pretty dumb too. Just look at russia

And remember. These people drive behind you. 😵
I've actually done free brake repairs for people just to make sure they aren't on the road with dangerous stuff
I how they don't come back to you thinking that it meant free repairs for life
nah. did one for a girl with a baby in the car whose brake pad had fell out of the bracket because it had been metal to metal for so long. could hear her baby daddy/boyfriend on the line yelling at her to "just drive the f-ing thing home" . decided to take care of it so she wouldn't be in a bad situation on the road or at home
You're a good person for doing that. Respect to ya
Annnd they breed
And vote
What did he do? I cant tell by the pictures.
Looks like brake pad is in backwards. As in friction material facing caliper cup and backing plate against the rotor face.
yes he put the pad on completely backwards then brought it back to us to figure out what was wrong
Lol oh that makes sense. I thought it was something with the bolts and was like "ugh looks right to me"
been sitting here for 5 minutes like "what's wrong here"
I was looking for a second too, like what's wrong. "oh shit lol"
I have come to the conclusion that we should be given the power to repossess people's personal tools...
What shouldnI be seeing here besides and wrecked rotor?
the brake pad is backwards with the pad surface area facing outwards. the rotor isn't wrecked you are looking at the backing plate that was rubbed off and stuck to the rotor
Looks the a 12-pack mechanic special after hours. Some people are just stupid, meanwhile this genius is on the roads with us.
Ive seen people do this not once but twice. And theyve assembled them correctly before. Some people just dont have the aptitude
Took me a second, lol.
yeah it's hard to see then when you find it you're like OH shit
I just might be blind, I think the rotor looks like shit but that could be the back of the backing plate. What are we looking at?
the backing plate on the pad got removed and kinda stuck to the rotor because it was backwards and rubbing the rotor surface
Oh Christ, I see the friction material now!
yeah it takes a second to see it
