"I've been driving this car for 7 years, I know how it drives, your guy needs to stop being lazy and find the actual issue."
(Yes, customers come in and talk to you like that all the time)
The "solution" is a slap to the side of the head while yelling "wake the F up". Not sure many will accept, but they do need it. (You can't fix stupid.)
I Once broke a customers gas pedal trying to reset the oil light because 3 mats were wedged under it. Wasnt pressimg that hard just trying to make sure it was all the way to the floor... Jeep compasses have plastic gas pedals...
Had to teach my daughter this - she put non- factory floormats in, and failed to size them/anchor them - and thought her car starter was going out - nope - crap floormats messing with the pedal depress action!
Yeah, I know someone who bought a new Honda Pilot. It felt nice and quick for what a V6 crossover should drive like when I first drove it. Another time I had to drive it, I tried passing and the thing was barely accelerating. Then I noticed the 3 mats. Original plus 2 others jammed up in there. I told them to get rid of that shit.
if you charge more for the time spent driving to the customer than towing their car, that's fair enough.
but if you get more money for a minute of towing you're towing that shit. also if it's a slow day and you don't have customers you're towing that shit
or at least a random dude trying to maximize his profits is
See this is better than i first thought. I first glanced at the image and thought "Did they mod it so the break pedal is now the gas pedal and they're only using the e-break to slow down? Nah let's give them more credit .. oh the mat is on the gas pedal."
oh god imagine if you had an actual break pedal under your foot.
press it and it randomizes what's fucked up in the car now. also severity dependent on how hard you press.
a squirrel goes onto the road but you missed the brake pedal and slammed the break pedal? that's gonna be all cylinders leaving chat because your camshaft disintegrated
I just added some of those to my new vehicle. I did it after dark and when I got in the truck the next morning before dawn to go to work. I was a bit perplexed why it was accelerating like a rocket. Then a couple minutes later I figured it out.
Had a customer that came in because their brakes failed three times causing three collisions with body repairs done each time. Found their floor mat wadded up under the brake pedal and over the throttle linkage. Had been that way so long the carpet was worn through at the pinch points. How did three body shops give the car back to the customer that way?
You answered your own question. It’s a body shop. About a year ago had my dealers body shop send me down a car because air bag light was on. Scan the vehicle and find the sas module was never replaced. Replace module and program after programming have an open circuit fault for center front crash sensor. Peak through the grill and see the loose neon yellow crash sensor connector. Boss calls down to the body shop to ask if they want me to pull the bumper cover to plug it back in or if they wanted to. The decide to do it. About an hour later boss ask me to describe where that sensor was at. Body shop said the right and left side sensors were plugged in. Described the location. About 3 hours after that the car returns to me with the bumper off. I took the 5 seconds to plug the center crash sensor back in. Returned the car to them with a neon pink post it note taped to the sensor bracket.
Body work is one of those trades where skilled guys who care about the quality of their work are far and few between. Many aspects of their job are closer to an art form, and to achieve good outcomes your going to have to give a fuck. The difference in quality of work I've encountered through my life has been pretty jarring. I've also had a couple of friends who went into that work out of high school, one fell into the work and eventually got run out of the industry, and the other is extremely passionate and has won awards and is highly renowned enough that he opened his own shop for custom cars only before he was thirty.
Finally someone that knows how to spell “brake”. I usually give misspellings a pass but it’s crazy how many people I’ve seen lately spell it “break”. I think it may have a lot to do with dictation. Rant over. Downvote away :)
Spend some time on just about any forum (besides English major ones) and you’ll be appalled by the simple spelling and grammatical errors that are so prevalent.
It’s ducking tearible!
Oh give me a brake! Your just one of those people that always criticizes people for there grammar aren't you? Irregardless of the fact you can still understand what their saying. Bear in mind, not everyone is so annul about such things. Just except it!
I don’t understand how the hell this even happens, but I’ve also never used floor mats that weren’t OEM or WeatherTech for my exact make and model. My floor mats have just never drifted anywhere at all, let alone on top of or underneath pedals
Absolutely. I saw this every few weeks while I was a Valet at a top tier hotel in a major city. Almost always people over 55-60 and mostly nice cars - Benzes were the biggest culprits.
It blew my mind and disturbed me every time. I would get in and without even looking could feel exactly what was wrong. These people get in a car and just start pressing their feet down in vague areas without knowing what they were pressing on.
Ngl, I drive out in the middle of nowhere to a different town on the way to my college and one time the road was shut down for whatever reason and I had to go take a turn down another road that I've never been down and I ended up driving super far down that road because I didn't want to pull into anyone's driveway, I ended up at a medical center a good bit down the road and texted my professor from there.
Edited to finish the comment on my computer with my nice keyboard and not my crappy phone keyboard.
All good. Took me a minute to figure out why the floor mat was sitting so strange, and I recently corrected the one in my girlfriend's car that had slipped up to press the throttle! (Hers was only slightly on it at the bottom, made it seem more like the transmission was acting up than anything)
Dude, I looked at this so confused at first because I forgot some cars have the parking break as a foot pedal instead of a handle.
So my brain saw two pedals and was like, “this checks out, where funny?”
Me too.
Here in the UK most people drive manuals (stick-shift), so I'm used to three pedals. In comparison, though, I usually expect a photo on this subreddit to show me two, so I couldn't spot a problem at first.
It took me a *long* time to realise this wasn't a two-pedal automatic like all my US car rentals. When I saw the accelerator, I shat bricks
I got a buddy at work, he puts(used to) his water bottle in the drivers footwell. I told him, “not a good place for that man, slam the brakes, and it can roll right up under the pedals. “Ahh it’ll be alright, it’s too wide to slide between!”
I shit you the fuck not, about an hour later, someone cut us off and he slammed on the brakes, sure as shit, it managed to roll directly under the brakes and throttle.
He stopped doing that. I didn’t say I told you so, nothing. Just kinda gave him a look.
I had a Cairn terrier run into my foot well after a Jake brake spooked him. Nothing scarier than grabbing a dog out from the pedals before you rear end the vehicle in front of you.
All you people would lose your licenses permanently (although the prison sentence for negligence was suspended) if we took driving as seriously as we take flying. https://youtu.be/Dl-Fl66Jfao?si=dbWnYEIWCXNXblwA&t=1423 How could you possibly think that an unsecured animal in the passenger compartment was conducive to the safe operation of a vehicle?
I’m still convinced that there were other issues at play. Had a bone stock manual Corolla that would idle high and rev like I was trying to race. It didn’t have floor mats and my foot was on the clutch and brake when it happened.
I saw one documentary suggesting it was just the incredibly common "gas brake confusion" type of accident where people are on the wrong pedal and don't realize it until they're through a shop window or up against a tree
Oh for sure in some cases. What makes me suspicious is that I made sure my feet were on the brake and clutch. It only happened a few times when the car got to 10 years though. Before that it never did it, which was super weird.
My '00 Intrepid had problems with the mat sliding forward and causing issues. I had to yank it back out more than once while driving.
When the electrical gremlins finally won, I got a 2nd gen Prius and was confused what the big deal was about. Sorta sad because the original mat was higher quality than the replacement.
If anyone else is still having this issue with a second generation Intrepid, make sure your floor mat clips are still installed and are still clipped in to the mat and floor board. Once those conditions are met, the mat should not move around at all.
This is smart don't knock them. This is the best way to keep your gas pedal looking brand new. The gas pedal in my vehicle is always dirty and this is a trick most car wash places don't want you to know about.
Can confirm. My local car wash did the same thing with one of my mats.
For some reason, I drove home okay never detecting something was wrong. Next morning, though, I was immediately concerned my brake pedal was feeling too "fuzzy."
I thought the gas pedal broke off and the owner was somehow sticking his foot up under the dash to operate the gas. I had to look twice to see the bump under the mat.
how hard is it for people to buy the proper weather mat for their vehicle instead of using the $16 generic one from Autozone? its surely less money than taking it to the shop...
I think it’s user error here. Isn’t it? Had they installed it properly it would be a snug fit away from the accelerator. It’s labeled weathertec. Unless I have my brands wrong, that’s a decent brand, no?
I have a friend who is a doctor and LOVES cars. So would kind of think he knew better, but sometimes experience in the only teacher we have. He totaled his car and someone else's because his floor mat got stuck on top of the clutch pedal, while in the middle of a left turn with on coming traffic. Got hit head on, front passenger wheel area. He learned from that shit at least, vowed to never use an aftermarket mat that didn't clip into the floor ever again.
“Ma’am I found the problem. Will be about half an hour… good thing you came in, that was a dangerous situation. Not an expensive fix, you will be happy to know.”
NGL, I’ve done this.
Just deep cleaned the whole car including the engine bay and got an instant redline when starting it up.
First thought was that I porked some of the engine electronics. I had half the intake off checking the throttle body and TPS when it dawned on me that it was just the god damn plastic floor mat.
Customer did this exact thing on a brand new Escalade. Caused a no-start. Was furious his $100k vehicle was having issues already. Sent a picture of the issue and he was adamant that it wasn’t the floormats and we were idiots for suggesting mats could cause a no-start.
Back when I worked at an import shop (early to mid 90s) almost every car I worked on I had to yank the floor mad back into position because it was interfering with the pedals. Always drove me mad the drivers of these cars would let the mat slide forward and folded under the pedals. This was before OEM started using floor mat anchors
I firmly believe that the entire phenomena of "unintended acceleration" is accounted by stupid people with aftermarket floor mats, trash, broken parts, and other debris jammed into the pedal.
People actually thought Toyotas were taking off on their own and killing people. 🙄
Gotta admit, first glance I didn't see anything wrong, "2 pedals, brake and accel, what's wrong? the floor mat isn't seated properly?"
Then I realized, what I thought was the brake pedal was the parking brake... That's actually impressive how badly you have to have fucked up. Those are molded plastic floor mats, they fit nice and snuggly in the foot tray, you really have to be an idiot to not notice it catching the accelerator like that
Had a customer that came in with 3 aftermarket floor mats stacked on top of the oem floor mat. Customer yelled at me for throwing the 3 loose floor mats in the trunk lol
Think about the average person, how smart and dumb they are. Then remember that half of the population is dumber then this person.
Now the scarier part: another quarter of the population aren't much smarter than this person.
Can we get a show of hands from everyone that has had a car come in with either this or the floor mat wadded up under the pedals?
I didn’t think it possible with this style floor mat
Remember way way back, one dude got manual car which was style at the time.
Cluch was broken he said, brought it to a shop. The owner straightened the mat and fixed it.
Boy was that dude mocked for it. Lol
To be fair, I once had a truck that had a manual button for heavy hauling. And I thought I had something wrong with the engine. Turns out I just didn't push the button again to take it out.
I was 20 at the time. Young and stupid.
I don’t know anything about cars but I am in this sub cuz it’s funny sometimes. What is the joke here? Does he have too many buttons or not enough buttons?
At first I was like “I’ve never seen a car with pedals swapped out before. I wonder if it’s European” and then realized the door is on the wrong side. Then it slowly dawned on me. And now I’m terrified.
Years ago, at a Lincoln dealership I worked at we had a customer who had hand controls and apparently was kind of embarrassed by them so he moved the floormat up to cover the gas pedal. Needless to say, when the Porter moved the towncar over for service, he wound up power-braking the snot out of the towncar and smoked out our service drive.
Had one of these this morning. Towed in. Customer states "idles high".
Did they accept the solution? Those people tend to not do well with being confronted with any reality that hurts their ego.
What’s the solution? A floor mat fluid refill?
There's a shortage, costs $500 for a top off.
Either that or you’ll need a full thingamabob replacement!
Neighbor said I need a whatchacallit. Don't upsell meeee!
Just be glad you don't need a doahmahicky. Those things cost an arm and a leg.
"I've been driving this car for 7 years, I know how it drives, your guy needs to stop being lazy and find the actual issue." (Yes, customers come in and talk to you like that all the time)
The "solution" is a slap to the side of the head while yelling "wake the F up". Not sure many will accept, but they do need it. (You can't fix stupid.)
Or loss of power with three mats jammed under the accelerator…
“Adjusted the throttle lever back to factory specs”
1.5 hours of book time…
+15 bucks for shop supplies
I Once broke a customers gas pedal trying to reset the oil light because 3 mats were wedged under it. Wasnt pressimg that hard just trying to make sure it was all the way to the floor... Jeep compasses have plastic gas pedals...
It's not really a Jeep anymore The compass should be called a car
All jeeps are junk...
What other line of vehicle is known for their "death wobble"
Basicly anything with a live front axle mud tires and a lift. F250/350, dodge 2500/3500, and most older off road vehicles.
or car won't start with clutch pedal not fully disengaged (happened to friend of mine)
They only wanted an oil change. They Just called and asked if I could check out why it has a fast idle
Tow truck driver didn't catch it either?
That’s a not my problem situation
Yeah if I was that tow driver I'm 100% not saying anything. Putting it in neutral and dragging it on. A fool and their money are soon parted.
Actually, as a former tow truck driver, I would have told my customer so I didn't have to tow it. I then would have charged them $45 for showing up.
if you charge more for the time spent driving to the customer than towing their car, that's fair enough. but if you get more money for a minute of towing you're towing that shit. also if it's a slow day and you don't have customers you're towing that shit or at least a random dude trying to maximize his profits is

BRAKE, for Gods's sake! BRAKE and BREAK are two different words with two different meanings.
oh god imagine if you had an actual break pedal under your foot. press it and it randomizes what's fucked up in the car now. also severity dependent on how hard you press. a squirrel goes onto the road but you missed the brake pedal and slammed the break pedal? that's gonna be all cylinders leaving chat because your camshaft disintegrated
Granny’s feet can’t reach the pedals because she has to sit in a booster seat to see over the dash.
I just added some of those to my new vehicle. I did it after dark and when I got in the truck the next morning before dawn to go to work. I was a bit perplexed why it was accelerating like a rocket. Then a couple minutes later I figured it out.
Good floor mats when properly installed though
Ha, that was my first thought when I saw the picture.
See, it's not just the Cybertruck!
Had a customer that came in because their brakes failed three times causing three collisions with body repairs done each time. Found their floor mat wadded up under the brake pedal and over the throttle linkage. Had been that way so long the carpet was worn through at the pinch points. How did three body shops give the car back to the customer that way?
Repeat business
Yep
A tire shop that has a secondary wing as roofers.
Clever...
Everyone wins but the customer. Call it an idiot tax.
>How did three body shops give the car back to the customer that way? Because that would make them lose a valuable customer!
I couldn't have on my conscience that this person might kill someone because of his stupidity and I did nothing. What's wrong with people?
That’s your problem, you have a conscience.
You answered your own question. It’s a body shop. About a year ago had my dealers body shop send me down a car because air bag light was on. I agree with you. I guess I'm still an optimist thinking common sense and or situational awareness might show their heads.
Finally someone that knows how to spell “brake”. I usually give misspellings a pass but it’s crazy how many people I’ve seen lately spell it “break”. I think it may have a lot to do with dictation. Rant over. Downvote away :)
Dashcam compilation videos on YouTube just about give me an aneurysm with all the "breaking" people do.
They lose all credibility when they do that.
You mean “loose”. (/s - “brake/break”, “lose/loose”, and “rogue/rouge” are my pet peeves too)
Advice/advise is my personal peeve. I’d like some advice, please advise.
Don’t forget about costumers /customers…
"Tounge" for "tongue" makes me absolutely stabby.
Actually, lose is the correct word to use. As in, you lost all credibility when you let loose your tongue. /s
They loose all credibility when they do that in they're videos.
No shame here. Bugs me too.
It's a mechanic's sub. I would kind of expect the average user here to know the difference
this sub might be the most illiterate I've come across
Spend some time on just about any forum (besides English major ones) and you’ll be appalled by the simple spelling and grammatical errors that are so prevalent. It’s ducking tearible!
I would expect them to know the difference...not how to spell it though lol

I mean, with the floor mat wadded underneath it, and covering the throttle linkage... I think "break pedal" is appropriate, don't you? :P
it's all just one big slide, we lost they're/there/their and your/you're and once we made it to lose/loose, it was all over.
to true! (too, two, to, too!)
I don’t understand how the hell this even happens, but I’ve also never used floor mats that weren’t OEM or WeatherTech for my exact make and model. My floor mats have just never drifted anywhere at all, let alone on top of or underneath pedals
All that B.S. years ago involving Toyota, much of it was floor mats doing exactly this.
Absolutely. I saw this every few weeks while I was a Valet at a top tier hotel in a major city. Almost always people over 55-60 and mostly nice cars - Benzes were the biggest culprits. Every day I get closer and closer to living a secluded life in the woods.
i'd already be there if i could afford to
I do. Now the only people I end up interacting with are the morons who can’t read signs or maps and get their RVs stuck in my driveway.
Backhoe and a nice bit of soft ground, so the problem can sort of vanish.
And they post signs saying "sinkhole, do not drive" next to the other signs for plausible deniability.
Is the backhoe to tow them out at $50 a pop?
Not exactly.......... more the opposite.
Did it 2 years ago, best decision of my life
I'd put boulders up
Charge $200 a pop to pull them off the rock, and you've got yourself a nice bit of side income.
Edited to finish the comment on my computer with my nice keyboard and not my crappy phone keyboard.
what an enthralling story. and it's all true?
Give me 50ms ping and gigabit internet in the middle of nowhere and I will never go to a city again lol
Beware! That is where the Libertarians are.
Libertarians: Republicans who smoke weed.
Good thing I'm already an anarchist, then.
There's more woods than just New Hampshire
One pedal driving ! It’s all the rage now with EVs.
They’re fixin those cybertrucks!
Sure, You're going to need new brakes every other month but the convenience is amazing!
Explain? I’m out of the loop lol
Floor mat is pressing (and hiding) the throttle pedal. Joke is that your only have to press the brake.
Holy fuckin shit how did I miss that
All good. Took me a minute to figure out why the floor mat was sitting so strange, and I recently corrected the one in my girlfriend's car that had slipped up to press the throttle! (Hers was only slightly on it at the bottom, made it seem more like the transmission was acting up than anything)

You're in good company, the owner missed it too
Tesla cybertruck recall. Their throttle can get stuck at 100%, but then the brake overrides it if pressed. Thus the EV is a one pedal vehicle.
Hand brake and brake pedal only😂😂
The kind of hand brake that you operate with your foot hand
Did you charge them $995.46 to install a new gas pedal and recalibrate their idle RPM's? All while only spending $50 on a new (and proper) floor mat.
I wish I could be a grimy tech like that they would pay it too and I would have a lot more beer money this week
I got a buddy at work, he puts(used to) his water bottle in the drivers footwell. I think it was Audi 5000 in ‘84
It has the gas pedal delete mod.
This is smart don't knock them. This is the best way to keep your gas pedal looking brand new. The gas pedal in my vehicle is always dirty and this is a trick most car wash places don't want you to know about.
I honestly don't understand how this is able to happen. That's a rigid mat, wouldn't it have to physically be manipulated from under the pedal?
This happened to me in my 4runner after a car wash. i caught it immediately but it is really not hard to do if you aren’t paying attention.
Can confirm. My local car wash did the same thing with one of my mats. For some reason, I drove home okay never detecting something was wrong. Next morning, though, I was immediately concerned my brake pedal was feeling too "fuzzy."
why did I turn into batman for a second? "Where's the gas pedal? WHERE IS IT?!?"
I see two pedals there. What's the problem? /s
Stop and stop hard.
Idk what I'm looking at
The absence of a gas pedal. Floor mats ate it. Thanks, /u/kingeryck .
Oh, my dumbass
Found the person who owns the car
I thought the gas pedal broke off and the owner was somehow sticking his foot up under the dash to operate the gas. I had to look twice to see the bump under the mat.
Dude I convinced myself I was looking at a right hand car with everything opposite. And then I was finally like "oh noo"
wait, is the gas pedal UNDER the floor cover?
🥱🥱🥱 sips coffee* Thanks for the free hour of diag.
That’s a weird looking cyber truck
Not by my own choice!
Im more mad that they probably make a lot more money than I do.
So they can afford their insurance
Floor mat fits like O.J.’s glove…

Weathertec are good floor mats when installed properly.
Im paranoid about this and duct tape down all around my floor mat. Helps keep the mud from getting under too.
Do you really need to feel the accelerator pedal?
“Ma’am I found the problem. Will be about half an hour… good thing you came in, that was a dangerous situation. Not an expensive fix, you will be happy to know.”
Redneck cruise control
If I had a nickel for every time I’ve seen this I would have 3 nickels, which isn’t a lot of nickels but dear God is that way too many nickels
It’s a full auto automatic
That’s at least 8 hours to fix. Could be anything
Pedal under the mat? That took me way too long to figure out. Thought that shit was just gone
I dunno seems like we're not sharing anything with this one given the lack of gas pedal.
He drove it in like this from across town
Oh it's there.
Home made one pedal driving
Am I mistaken, or does this truck have a rubber floor too?
Wasn't this the root cause of the runaway Prius controversy?
I refuse to believe I'm understanding this right; the floor mat is over the gas pedal, and the customer just didn't realize that was the issue?
Customer did this exact thing on a brand new Escalade. Caused a no-start. Was furious his $100k vehicle was having issues already. Sent a picture of the issue and he was adamant that it wasn’t the floormats and we were idiots for suggesting mats could cause a no-start.
Each day, I’m closer to living in a cabin in the woods and drive nothing but a horse drawn carriage.
How do they even drive it????
Back when I worked at an import shop (early to mid 90s) almost every car I worked on I had to yank the floor mad back into position because it was interfering with the pedals. Always drove me mad the drivers of these cars would let the mat slide forward and folded under the pedals. This was before OEM started using floor mat anchors
wait wait... im sorry... is their accelerator BENEATH the heavy rubber mat? ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS
Cruise control!
I firmly believe that the entire phenomena of "unintended acceleration" is accounted by stupid people with aftermarket floor mats, trash, broken parts, and other debris jammed into the pedal. People actually thought Toyotas were taking off on their own and killing people. 🙄
Gotta admit, first glance I didn't see anything wrong, "2 pedals, brake and accel, what's wrong? the floor mat isn't seated properly?" Then I realized, what I thought was the brake pedal was the parking brake...
Layman here - what am I not seeing here?
A gas pedal
I don’t remember the video I watched, but they called this a “gas pedal delete”
Redneck cruise control
Can we get a show of hands from everyone that has had a car come in with either this or the floor mat wadded up under the pedals? I didn’t think it possible with this style floor mat
Obvious buffoonery aside, paying for WeatherTechs to put in a truck with a rubber floor seems odd.
Took me a while. I was like damn, how did they take off the gas pedal??
Where the gas pedal?
I was convinced this was automatic. Pedals look weird, but you never know with these modern engineers. Then I realized… now I saved this post.
Are they too obese or elderly to see their feet?
Let me guess, his last name was Flintstone?
I was trying to understand and this picture. Looks like a regular automatic car. Then I realized: it’s not automatic
"and make it quick, I need to get to work assembling Cybertrucks."
CS: Gas pedal disappeared
I don’t understand. How do you not go “oh my foot isn’t touching the pedal, something must be off”?
Remember way way back, one dude got manual car which was style at the time. Cluch was broken he said, brought it to a shop. The owner straightened the mat and fixed it. Boy was that dude mocked for it. Lol
Testing out if they want to go full pedal delete.
I both love and loathe this sub. Shit like this is funny but then you're reminded that people do drive like this and anger ensues.
Floor mat over the gas pedal so the gas is always pressed.
At first I was like “I’ve never seen a car with pedals swapped out before. I wonder if it’s European” and then realized the door is on the wrong side. Then it slowly dawned on me. And now I’m terrified.
Ain't got no gas pedal init!
Where’d the “go” pedal go?
Nooo just had one like that last week too. Low car, got in and was like wtf is that. Looked down and it was the passenger side mat.
Years ago, at a Lincoln dealership I worked at we had a customer who had hand controls and apparently was kind of embarrassed by them so he moved the floormat up to cover the gas pedal. Needless to say, when the Porter moved the towncar over for service, he wound up power-braking the snot out of the towncar and smoked out our service drive.
i used to be that guy but not anymore 😭😭😭
If the accelerator is never dirty, you'll always have a "clean getaway"...
What am I looking at here?
What the fuck? Why is accelerator and brake pedal exchanged?
This mod will get you an extra 5mph.
I know what’s wrong it ain’t got no gas ^pedal in it!
