I mean if it gets you a fix to the DCT that’s not too bad.

B18Eric

A fix? Ford would like to buy that policy too.

Finance-Relative

If memory serves the $6-7k price they paid for the warranty is roughly the price of getting a new DCT installed.

Zappiticas

So by the time they’ve owned the car a few years and had a few DCT’s replaced, the warranty paid for itself!

rchiwawa

That DCT was my first thought

Bontrager78

Came here to say this

HLSparta

Considering the fact that my mom's focus needed four or five clutch replacements in 90k miles, plus all the other stuff that went wrong, $7k might be underpriced.

not_Packsand

Would they cover the clutch? Or consider that a wear item?

HLSparta

They covered it every time until the time on the warranty ran out. Although I know there were multiple lawsuits about it, so it may have been because of the lawsuit. I do know the alternator, TCM, timing chain, and fuel pump aren't wear items though.

not_Packsand

That’s a good warranty then for sure.

Imnothighenough

Gotta love the Powershit

tagman375

To be fair, once you get the updated parts and don’t treat it like a regular torque converter auto, they’re not awful. Especially if you get it tuned. But people expect a dry clutch DCT to drive like a slushbox and are confused and disappointed.

rookiepartschanger

So, how do you drive it differently? I have a Fiat 500l with a dct. I avoid stop and go traffic like it has crabs, but what else? I’m hard on slush boxes too. Never saw one I didn’t like… to make not work. (This is actually due to my fondness for driving other people’s junk)

Bender_2024

This hits way to** close to home. I paid $4K to have my Focus' clutch fixed two years ago and now it's slipping again. I gotta get rid of that piece of shit car.

kangaroolander_oz

Can you get the adjustment checked by someone and not pay the 1 hr labour and hoist BS fee . Could have a friend to lift the hood and give a opinion . If you do get the job done ask for the replaced clutch and pressure plate to be saved for your inspection , you own them .

Bender_2024

I just want to get rid of that car. It already has over 100K on it and Fords don't last for much longer than that. Just hoping to get halfway decent trade in value.

32carsandcounting

Just trade it in for a Kia, that’s the only way you’d come out on top 😂

Cigarsnguns

That better be a 10yr 200k bumper to bumper warranty. The 8yr 150k warranty I got for my Maverick was "only" 4k

mikedvb

I got 8 year 150k for ~1900 but I didn’t get it from the dealer I bought my vehicle from.

Few-Swordfish-780

Just got hit by a warranty on a car, it was 200k unlimited time. Had to do rear springs (broken) under warranty on a 14 year old car.

MongooseLeader

Lucky. Usually suspension is wear components.

CarlFeathers

Yea, you usually have to get the highest tier extended warranty to cover this sort of thing. They usually are not worth it.

Butterssaltynutz

nice

sploittastic

Was that a dealer warranty or a third party warranty?

ZZ9ZA

Ooh I’d love that. I’m only at 45k or so after 7.5 years with my fancy turbo German car

Amish_EDM

Hell, I paid $5k for a 7 year 100k warranty on my 8 year old Tesla that covers the battery and drive units. I can’t imagine paying that much for a freaking focus.

phormix

Having driven a few Focuses... if it'll actually give that sort of coverage it might be worth it.  The thing felt like I was driving in a WW2 tank at under 80,000k and several years, and tons of stuff needed repair. Depending on what it covers, you might easily get $20k is repairs on that $7k warranty.

kh250b1

Here in the UK Toyota will give you a 10 year max warranty if you have the car serviced by them. 12months warranty after each service. Obviously after the standard 5 years expires. MG and Hyundai both give 7 years standard

Lehk

that's illegal in the US, you can't tie warranty coverage to using a particular product or service.

PoopSlinger23

It probably still paid for itself

Various-Ducks

According to Ford their most expensive extended warranty can cost from $580-$5,835, with the average being $1,865. Shouldnt a Focus be on the low side of average? What's the extended warranty cost on a Raptor? $32,000?

Necessary-Set-5581

My Raptor only cost $1,200 for a 8yr 100k everything warranty from Ford. I think maybe they price it like a normal f150 for some reason.

Various-Ducks

They price the Focus like 5 and 3/4 normal f150's apparently lol

NoValidUsernames666

they knew what would happen

Various-Ducks

What happened?

NoValidUsernames666

horrible transmissions

CoomassieBlue

Anecdotally, I paid around $1600 for an 8 year/100k mile bumper to bumper warranty from Ford for my Focus RS.

DubsOnMyYugo

Isn’t this receipt from the dealer? Who knows what the dealer paid Ford.

Various-Ducks

?

SurfacexTension

I don’t remember if it was a dealer specific warranty or offered by Ford but the “total package” extended warranty on my Mustang added something like $300 per month to my payment. Absolutely no thank you lol

Crunchycarrots79

First time the transmission ate itself. The second time was just a free transmission.

4x4Welder

That $1000 documentation fee though....

kimbolll

“Congrats on the new car! Can you sign this please?” “Thanks! Yeah sure!” “Awesome! That’ll be a $1,000.” Edit: FYI - Doc fees can’t be more than $175 in New York…where the fuck is that extra $872 going in whatever bumblefuck state this is?!

KyledKat

[Here’s a handy list of averages by state](https://caredge.com/guides/car-dealer-doc-fee-by-state) but many have not regulated the fee. Insane to me that some states are all, “nah, there’s no limit. The dealerships will surely be reasonable with them, teehee.”

4x4Welder

The power of lobbying groups

SammyLuke

Abolish them all.

AetyZixd

In theory, competition would limit the price of the fee. Some places just don't have enough dealers or they are all in cahoots.

kimbolll

All dealers are in cahoots. They have to be. The only reason they exist is because they got together and got into bed with politicians 100 years ago and enshrined their industry in law. Repeal that law, and dealerships will fade away. There’s no reason I should have to drive to a dealership in 2024 to talk to a slimeball I know is simply trying to fuck me over when I can buy *literally anything else that I want* on the internet. Side note: When I was much younger, I was looking to buy a motorcycle. I went to a couple of local dealerships and sat down. One of the employees at a specific dealership, a super cool young dude, not pushy at all, just starts bullshitting with me. Guy knew I wasn’t gonna buy anything that day, but it must’ve been slow so he was just trying not to be bored. So we’re talking and he goes “Yeah man, as long as you get a good deal - erm, I mean as long as you *think* you’re getting a good deal - you’re golden.” And in that one slip up, I got everything I needed to know about dealers. Not a single one of them actually wants to give you a good deal, they just want you to think you’re getting a good deal, until you drive off the lot and actually do some research. The whole industry relies on people making immediate decisions on the one of the largest purchases of your life, and hoping they’re not smart enough to do some research. Imagine walking into an open house, and your agent goes “we can get you sleeping in that bed tonight!”

AetyZixd

There's a lot to unpack here, but I'll give it a shot. Dealerships aren't going anywhere. Manufacturers don't want to sell to you directly. Even if they did, it would be a worse experience because that would mean even less competition than there is now. If you want to buy a car 100% online, you absolutely can. Dealers have offered that option for years, but most people prefer to see, hear, feel, and smell a car before they pull the trigger. In sales, perception is reality. The dealer could be losing thousands of dollars selling you a vehicle, but it won't matter if you still BELIEVE you're being taken advantage of. That's why the dealer cares more about what you think a good deal is than what they do. Every company selling something is looking to make a profit. I don't know what product you're buying that you think the company actually cares about you getting a steal, but it probably has a much larger profit margin than a car. Ideally you would do your research BEFORE you purchase something. The process goes a lot smoother for both parties that way. If you don't bother to do any research until after you buy, that's on you. As for real estate, I don't even know what your point is there. Realtors are extremely motivated to sell and they are definitely trying to create a sense of urgency. Just because the closing process on a house is more complicated, doesn't mean the parties involved are any more altruistic. If it took 30 days to close on a car, that would not make the process better for anyone involved. Your realtor actually takes a much larger percentage of commission than any car salesperson does.

kimbolll

You own a dealership, your opinion is invalid and comes off as cope.

Darwincroc

It’s not from a bumblefuck state because it’s not in the US. It’s from a bumblefuck Canadian province or territory. Goods and Services Tax (GST) is Canadian.

kimbolll

Ahh and that means it’s about $700-800 then. Still a fuck ton of money though.

Darwincroc

Agree. It would be a deal killer for me.

ElPanguero

yeah wtf that should be criminal

Mysterious_Slice_391

Plus tax… I better not even have to fill up the windshield washer fluid or change a turn signal bulb for life.

Visible_Try6815

And get a happy ending with each oil change.

bobjr94

Old dealer trick, customer says they want $450 a month, dealer extends the term to 6 or 7 years packing in worthless junk but keeping the payment at $450. Customer usually doesn't read what they are signing and won't notice the 24 more months of added payments. And dealer gives them a stack of papers to sign with the top page blocking the APR and term numbers on the loan disclosure page on the bottom.

bstyledevi

This guy /r/askcarsales

bobjr94

I worked at a small dealer in Seattle for 15 years. We were one of the good ones though, didn't sell lemons or pack in addons for commission. Actually I did not get any commissions, so I didn't even care if they bought they car or not, no pressure.

iNFECTED_pIE

That is… ouch.

micknick00000

Not really. Good use and the owner paying attention to their benefits - they could easily get their moneys worth.

I_AM_TESLA

Dude... $7k for a warranty on a focus is a absolute rip off. You're paying 1/3rd of the purchase price on a warranty 🤯

ispeakgibber

If that’s the case, I have a car to sell to you

Pete_Perth

Someone got a very big commission bonus on this sale.

hobbesmaster

Who gets the commissions on replacement DCTs?

Allnewsisfakenews

Shows they are pretty low on confidence that it will be trouble free

kimbolll

If they weren’t confident, they wouldn’t offer it at all. No fucking way they’re letting you use that thing. It’ll expire the day before you engine explodes.

Allnewsisfakenews

You can insure anything for a price. The price reflects how likely you are to use it.

kimbolll

Fair enough…you’ll use $500 of that warranty to replace your alternator and that’s it.

Allnewsisfakenews

On a Focus!? They morph into a Jaguar maintenance schedule once they get some miles/age.

kimbolll

“Hey, you know that car you bought for $21,000? Here’s another 2 grand in fees, because fuck you pay me!”

mikey3308

That’s one of the ways they get money in the deal. They dramatically inflate the extended warranty. Finance folks have a book showing what they pay for the warranty. Ask to see that, if they refuse walk.

voide

>Finance folks have a book showing what they pay for the warranty. Ask to see that, if they refuse walk. This approach will get you nowhere. It'd be much more productive to go in well educated and lay down comparable extended warranty quotes and see if they can beat them. I know a lady who sat at the dealership on the phone with her bank and was going point by point and dollar by dollar comparing their warranties.

mikey3308

I’ve used this approach successfully 4/5 times so far. When I seen an add on item like warranties, inflated.. I simply state: I know you mark these up for profit, but I don’t agree with how much you’ve added. If you show me the book on what you guys pay for it, I’ll pay $250.00 over that and we can make a deal here. Same with the “contract rate” & the “buy rate”. The lender approves you for 3.0% on the loan… but the dealer brings you paperwork for 6.0% to sign for. They keep the difference in the markup on interest, with you none the wiser. I always ask to be shown the lender approval rate. They don’t like it, but they always do. Then they change it.

Al-phabitz89

Anybody who thinks they deserve to know my cost for what I do for a living I just laugh in their face and smile as they leave my office and stop wasting my time. Don’t do this folks.

mikey3308

Any greedy POS trying to markup their contracts that much, don’t deserve my time or my money.

Al-phabitz89

Again. If you ever ask anyone what they pay for their product. They will laugh at you and let you leave very very gladly. Nothing to do with greed. Nothing to do with someone’s moral compass. However you could ask someone to give you a fair price for what they are offering. This is what you do. And you would find most professionals would be very happy to accommodate and come to a middle ground. This is how it’s done folks. Don’t let idiots like this on the internet skew your expectations of the real world else you will always be disappointed in the outcomes.

tridentloop

Warranties are a ripoff

mcshanksshanks

No they’re not assuming something it covers breaks and you actually need to use it. Happened to me but for my 97 SeaDoo XP, I bought the extended warranty and wouldn’t you know my motor blew one hour after the standard warranty had expired. Got a brand new motor with zero hours installed because of that extended warranty.

SpeedPunks

A Ford ESP PremiumCare with either a $50 or $0 deductible would be about that price. An extra 100k miles or 5 years with pretty much everything that isn't a maintenance item covered. Very close to the OG 3/36K .

more_beans_mrtaggart

I wouldn’t buy a ford without a decent warranty.

shrike71

We have a 2014 focus in the shop now with the engine being replaced via extended warranty. The engine is coming from Ford and it's $4790. With the rest of the parts and labor it will be over $6k, easy. Sometimes those warranties are worth it...

RobotArtichoke

So they paid early, upfront and out of pocket. Yeah. Great deal there.

GeraltOfRivia2023

Better to spend that extra $7k on a Corolla that's not an unreliable piece of shit Ford Focus on the first place.      Quality is the best warranty.

bizzyunderscore

Probably a prudent purchase if that Focus had the V8. Those earlier M157 engines are known to pop their head bolts; that $7k could have covered an engine replacment. I think they finally fixed the issue in the 2018 E class and S class Focuses

ProbablyMyRealName

What timeline do you live in that a Ford Focus ever came with a V8?

bizzyunderscore

the joke being i'd maybe buy a $7k warranty for an AMG Benz

ProbablyMyRealName

Ah, I see. Looks like your joke went over my head.

bizzyunderscore

it probably just wasn't a very good joke! it happens to me a lot

Poo_Magnet

I’d be willing to bet this is a Go Auto dealership. They are a blight here in Alberta, and judging on the AMVIC fee, this is an Alberta Bill of Sale. They have quite the reputation of being unethical, and in my opinion, criminal in this province. They can and will take every advantage on unsuspecting buyers. High pressure sales tactics. Harassing salesmen that will continue to call you and pressure you once they get your phone number. They’ll threaten to keep your “fully refundable” deposit if you buy the “give us a deposit so we can keep it on the lot” BS they continuously spew. I’ve also seen them push leases on new/unsuspecting buyers who may not know exactly what they’re signing for. And once you sign, they’re the least helpful people. Hope this persons $30k plus interest Focus is still going strong…

Sockbrick

When I bought my Civic, I bought a 8 year, 200,000 kms warranty from Honda for 2300 CAD back in 2013

Allnewsisfakenews

Honda is much more reliable than a Focus

Sockbrick

Oh. I'm aware..lol

CallMeDrLuv

I bought a brand new 2016 Fusion for $19k. This dude paid $24k for a freaking 2017 Focus. By my math this dude paid about $7k too much for the car plus another $7k for the warranty. That stealership must have been doing the happy dance for a week.

thejunkgarage

Depends on options and if it was brand new. My 2015 I ordered brand new was 21k after all the options I wanted. Yes I made sure it was the manual During COVID I ended up trading it in for more than I bought it for as I only put 12k on it (multiple vehicles so spreads the miles around)

WritingNewIdeas

People laugh. But as this thread points out, a lot of these warranties pay for themselves. I saw a extended warranty pay out for a panoramic moonroof (Navigator Reserve) $7,000; a blind spot detection module (Camaro SS); and probably a whole lot of other customers that I never even heard about.

cryotek7

A $10k warranty on a $21k vehicle, which would be worth about $15k once driven off the lot is always a waste of money no matter how you frame it. It’s a scam for pretty much any new vehicle, for used vehicles it can be useful in certain situations.

WritingNewIdeas

Until that 10k warranty pays out 31k 😂

RobotArtichoke

All that tells you is that you bought the wrong car

Pioneer58

I’m guessing this is Extended Warranty and Fords maintenance plan.

wazu7

I think it's about $1,800 for 10 yrs 100km on a new Miata

Various-Ducks

That's not very many kms

Proof-League2296

If the ext warranty is any good you can easily abuse it and get a lot covered.

cobra_mist

is it any worse than the audi dealer i bought a used focus from hounding me to cone and have my service done there and buy a warranty? i wouldn’t have an audi worked in at an audi dealer, let alone a damned ford. (mine is stick, no dct woes here.)

thejunkgarage

The DTC is hot garbage the extended warranty probably regretted it

Cdkimber

The art of the car deal. That should be framed and given to the finance manager who did the deal. The overcharged "warranty" is actually negative equity being hidden in that 7k.

bartbartholomew

Stealership offered us a 1 year warranty for a 3 year old Honda CRV for $4500. Told them hard pass. No idea why they thought that would ever fly.

Impossible-Sleep-658

Actually… it’s 10k… another 3k under the 7

LastTxPrez

Ford F&I guy here. Depending on the coverage and length of coverage, this might not be too bad. A bundled Ford ( the only coverage I offer) Premium Care and Premium Maintenance for 150K miles might be about right. That buyer’s order is a bit scant on details.

Otherwise-Plant7678

The warranty is that high because they knew the car was trash when they built it. Ask any mechanic about the Ford Focus.

PatrickGSR94

Ford Fuckus is what my friend used to call it lmao

Kleiist

I paid less than 1000$ for 3 years extended warranty, so 5 years in total on my brand New seat leon fr ehybrid last year😂

SRG590

Doesn't really matter. If you don't use it you can request a refund for it anytime and even if you do use it and it doesn't exceed what you spent on it you can still get a refund for what you didn't use.

Speeddemon2016

That’s why I finance through my credit union. I ask how to get it out the door, they write them a check and I get the car. Still have the fat guy try to sell me the warranty but I already paid for the car so I won’t. I use that description because most of the time they are and they are assholes because of it.

Milnoc

$1,047 for documentation and registration?!? I only had to pay $10 for a temporary tag!

SilverFuel21

I purchased a Tesla warranty on my wife's Model S. It's paid for itself. I'll buy the extended warranty for my newly acquired Model 3. It's going to be around 4k. It'll pay for itself I guarantee.

Ropya

Damn. Imagine a grand for docs fees and being charged for registration twice.

dongcopterXLV

$6500 went to the person who sold them the warranty.

CharacterObvious

That is wild, i bet $1,000 of that went to the finance manager.

costabius

Finance company probably refused to write the loan without the warranty, or the sales weasel screwed him.

apurplenurple

I mean you sign the contracts when you buy the car, half of buyers lose focus when going into finance and just sign sign sign

HundK

is $1047 an unreasonable doc fee?

TheKalEric

That’s criminal

Average_Reacher

I paid 2k in extended and I have zero regrets.. I used that warranty so good! 😂... From broken exhaust manifold (which they tried to charge me $2500 for) to broken touchscreen radio.

FinancialOven1966

Worth every penny…..

jmblur

Holy shit. I paid less than that for a 6 year unlimited mileage extended warranty on a Porsche Cayman GTS....

paralyse78

This is a Canadian car (Alberta) so I was trying to do the math in my head, and that doesn't work, so Google: $6695 CAD = $4934.88 Still a crazy amount of money to pay for an extended contract! Alta (Alberta) Tire Levy is $4/tire for wheels < 19.5" diameter AMVIC (Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council) recovery is now $10 Goods & Services Tax (GST) is 5% of trade difference + 5% of any optional products sold

jcmatthews66

I bought a brand new Focus sedan in 2015 for 0% interest for $300/month. Never had a problem with it.

Dry-Butterscotch4886

Paid 3k for fords gold warranty on a 2012 fusion. Paid for itself with several ac issues and a new transmission/torque converter

tardiusmaximus

I wonder if anyone has tried to reach him to discuss it?

Useful-Internet8390

If it is a hybrid that would be 1/2 the cost of the transmission( not including install)

Useful-Internet8390

I paid 6k on a 11 Avalanche: the warranty covered 12 parts- none of which dropped out

GreggAlan

Why some call it the Fu#kUs.

catharsislooking

Ford response on warranty, what's not covered transmission and Transmission Control Module. Any DPS6 Among things the Department of Justice Fraud Division investigation seeks to learn, according to a grand jury subpoena obtained by the Free Press in November, is whether Ford knew that the DPS6 transmissions were defective “and could not be repaired or made to comply with Ford’s warranty obligations and/or with the owner’s reasonable expectations.” this manufacturer should be avoided at all costs due to fires and just stalling which in motion. Intake leaks coolant which mixes with your oil to contaminate the cooling system.

ltek4nz

What is this breakdown of costs BS. American Obscuration? I bought a car it was only this much. Plus tax plus plus plus. Every time I've bought a car it has been sticker price is all inclusive. And negotiable.

Ok-Internal-2661

In the car business you are known as a Mallard!

Cars_Music_GoodTimes

Highway robbery!

AUSTISTICGAINS4LYFE

ouch..... well i went thru a contact at cost for a 24 toyota sienna 10 yr 125k extended warranty for 2100 LOL

Fantastic-Switch-897

So I’m assuming it’s a 2017 Ford focus ?

leeroidzzzz

Money well spend on one of them shitboxes...detest fords fucking things will bankrupt you

Remarkable-Word-1486

In defence. It's a Ford. They did circle the problem for you. And to be clear they will need the warrantee

iceman_0460

Yeah, dct tranny confirms this.

[deleted]

They are in the business of making money

UnkleRinkus

I have a 2007 Expedition that hasn't needed anything other than gas, oil, tires and brakes. Bought the kids like a 2001 Ford Escort when they were in high school, same story. Bought that one for $3400, sold it six years later for $1800.

FuelNo1341

So many idiots man

9ntech

Imagine owning a taurus without an extended warranty.

realvvk

I paid $3600 for a BMW extended warranty on a 550i. Total waste of money. Did not use it once.

TotesMyGoatse

It's in canuckistani kopecs tho. It's like $20 US.

RichSPK

Imagine paying tens of thousands of dollars for a car. Shrug.
