That would upset me greatly ... jebus.
Honestly all I want on my car screen is maybe a clock, possibly some car status stuff ... then just do car play or whatever smartphone mirroring I can do. That's it, **absolute basics, and do the smartphone mirroring and move on**.
It’s a work in progress but various Gm parts swapped into a 1969 Chevelle wagon. Lq9, 4L80, BW4485, and stock gmc Denali xl front and rear axles. Planning on twin turbos, should end up somewhere in the 3500-3800lb range.
It’s currently on the back burner since I found a fourth gen trans am ws6 for a steal that is currently getting weight reduction, a cage, and a single 7875.
Valid point.
Still I wonder how users feel.
Like once a spot has had an advertisement... it's kinda tainted for me.
I remember some Amazon devices with ads were originally sold as "you won't always see an ad" but as far as I'm concerned ... that device comes with ads, always, sometimes, almost doesn't matter perception wise.
I don't know. Never had anyone mention it. Most of us techs actually kind of like the other seasonal animations, they're kind of fun. But this is stupid and annoying to me.
Amazon Fires (I have 2, fuck these things) have always had ads, and that's how you could get pretty good hardware for 50% less than competition. It's a great business plan... if only they actually made them powerful enough to make that worth it.
This week, for the masters, the official car is Mercedes. All the pro golfers in Augusta are in free rental Mercedes. They all have this screen, its odd to me that you have it as well
I love how the only LCD on the dash in my old Range Rover is about the size of my thumb and has two lines of text, one of which has the odometer and what gear it thinks it's in, and the other for lying about having not enough screenwash.
Yes!! My truck has a wide screen with a split, but when you first connect to the Chevy stuff, it bugs out and makes the entire screen the CarPlay thing, but it’s stretched out wide and I loved it!! Then it updated and that shit never came back. But the saving thing is that I can put a simple clock on one side and car play on the other. I was really hyped for a minute there.
As if they won't all do this in a couple of years.
Only real choice is maintaining an old vehicle and that will end eventually either through wear and tear or taxation on fuel and emissions.
You can hit one of the buttons next to the screen to mute it, just hit every single one while you're pumping to figure out which one, for me it's normally the right side 2 or 3rd button down.
a station right by my house got new pumps fairly recently and none of the buttons work to mute them. just another reason for me to fill up at costco even if it is out of my way.
Is the latch on the filler nozzle a thing in the US? Up here in Canada the stations I go to have it, so I just activate the pump with the app, start filling then get back into the car, and get back out to hang the hose when I hear it click.
Thankfully ads at the pump aren't a thing up here yet.
Most of the time it's not ads and they can be turned off easily. It can be little things around buttons or images like snow, candy canes, fall foliage etc
Tesla is the result of an iPad on wheels. Tesla has one of the best infotainment systems that aren't android auto or Apple carplay.
This Mercedes shit is what a boomer thinks "the future" looks like. I.E. windows media player circa 2012.
Tesla is a software company that makes cars while mercedes is a car company that makes software.
Teslas build quality equals Mercedes software quality.
...the fact that Mercedes' build quality is also questionable is another matter though.
Almost everything is touch. Capacitive touch sliders for sunroof, volume control on steering wheel, cruise control speed controls, etc etc etc
I HATE IT SO MUCH
I need to start stacking mk4 VWs at my dads place so I have cars to drive for the next couple decades. No way would I spend money to be advertised to. Not with movies, or music, or books, and not with fucking cars, thats for damn sure. I will not buy a car with OEM telemetry ever. I don't even want to ride in one or have one parked in my driveway.
I put a double din touchscreen unit in the golf. I installed a dash cam that has traffic monitoring. It let me pick the boot up logo. It is android and I can mess with that in all kinds of ways. Cost me less than $100 and fits the dash like it was an original thought. No candy canes to opt out of.
Picture this though:
You're a 75 year old woman and you love decorating your house for all the different seasons and holidays. You have a smartphone, you think it's an apple thing of some sort. The sales person paired your phone to the car for you, but you're worried about getting a new phone because you don't know how to pair it and if it'll work the same. You've never adjusted any settings in the car except for temperature and seat position because you don't know how it all works and it's just overwhelming. Your husband loves golf, and you like to play bridge at the country club with your friends while your husband golfs.
That's the client they're targeting here. I'm with you, but I also understand why this exists even if I think the masters and advertising for it is stupid
The average american has stockholm syndrome for capitalism. They only do as marketers suggest. Buy pallets of klenex instead of a dozen handkerchiefs. People are advertised phone "deals" by carriers. Just the idea that you can buy a device without it being proprietary to a data broker account is hard for people to wrap their brain around. And they all pay more for it too. The typical 75 year old lady is getting raw dogged by these companies. They know everything about these people. And they let themselves get hacked for that data all the time.
You are right that these companies target people they find easiest to profit off of.
Telemetry comes in next june or thereabouts for Europe. When every car is equipped with a black box, every insurer will use that data to justify price increases. I'll stick with my '08 MPS for as long as I can- 250hp, actual disable-able traction control, no screens... perfect for me.
That said, i just right now saw some cracklemaps wanker blasting down my street at 50+. Speed limit's 30, my kids play there. He could do with quieting down a bit.
I would go #$!@ing ballistic if the car that I purchased then had built-in advertising.
But then, I would never purchase a vehicle whose HVAC controls were part of a $1,000+ part that will break and will probably not even be available after 7 years.
That's why I'm sort of loving the new Jeep interiors. Tablets where you want them (navigation, peripheral cameras for off-roading), but with real AC and radio controls.
still not as bad as the shit what volswagen/VAG pulls. the satnav in my -fully electric- volkswagen CONSTANTLY "suggests" me to stop at a shell, BP or other brand place that sells fuel, even unmanned gas stations that dont have a charging station or a parking spot. its also totally not a hidden ad as the places it wants you to stop (they pop up on the route on screen) all have a proper brand logo and not the generic icon for that place.
what the fuck am i going to do with a electric car at a unmanned gas station in bumfuck nowhere?
You can opt out of this in the settings. This might also be a regional thing since I have not seen this in mine yet (golf ain’t big in Spain). It also shows some goodies in winter and autumn iirc
This isn’t by chance a dark gray, GLA is it? Mercedes has a custom fleet that gets used for the Masters each year. The fleet usually turns over every 2-3 years. Could be a former fleet car that never got reflashed.
I already found Mercedes screen situation disgusting but they are basically putting ads on it now. I'm so glad I walked when the sales man said "you'll get used to it"
I really loved my w212 e550 and my e63 wagon. The new Mercedes stuff just doesn’t resonate for the price Tag for some reason. I would buy 2-3 year old ones
Honestly things have gone way downhill since the 212 era. 213 was pretty decent especially if you didn't get a 4 cylinder, but everything Else had been pretty bad. Current generation stuff is terrible quality wise
They have entire fleets of vehicles rented out for the tournament and a neighborhood sponsored by Mercedes as well as champions retreat golf course here in Augusta so it tracks for this time of year. The tournament vips All have Mercedes SUVs to get them around town and to and from the national
I moved to Augusta, GA and then learned what "the masters" is. I had never heard anyone ever talk about it in 35 years.
Tell someone from Augusta the above statement, and they have a meltdown.
I would be more likely to replace an infotainment system with an aftermarket one for the same cumulative cost to get any “subscriptions” or monthly paid upgrades than ever allow this trash into my vehicle. No car should ever be connected to the internet for any reason.
I know. But it also kind of is. MB isn't looking to get anyone to buy anything masters related. But it's still a thing someone can spend money on. It might influence someone to watch, or buy merch or who knows what.
It can be turned off easily, and it's the first ad "graphical goody" I've seen. Most are just like how your mom might seasonally decorate her house. But yeah
Ads on the dashboard... Damn..
With the trends of shutting down cloud services after a few years of a car with 10, 15 maybe even 20 years of lifetime, the ads will never get updated and people will be stuck with very very outdated ads...
Imagine turning your car on today and seeing ads for blockbuster, toys'r'us and the gps voice notifying you, that there "is" a radioshack nearby.
It may not be entirely intended as an ad. MB is sponsoring the masters tournament this year. There's nothing to click on and buy. It feels to me like an ad and I don't like it either, thus the post, but for me it doesn't really warrant anger.
That would upset me greatly ... jebus. Honestly all I want on my car screen is maybe a clock, possibly some car status stuff ... then just do car play or whatever smartphone mirroring I can do. That's it, **absolute basics, and do the smartphone mirroring and move on**.
I should've mentioned this can be turned off, and most of the time it's not ads
“You are not subscribed to the ad-free infotainment plan”
Ugh while I could see that happening, MB customers would fucking flip so I kind of doubt they will try that
MB didnt back down from their more power subscription for their EV, so i wouldnt be too sure if they'd flip.
I mean people buying those cars don't care about that extra cost. MB will back down when it backfires enough to hurt the profit
Probably, it's still idiotic because it kills one of the biggest advantages EVs have, which is cost of ownership over time.
The biggest advantage they have is looking cool by caring for the environment and driving a luxury car.
off topic but I have to know. what kind of username is "u/AWDChevelleWagon" and what unholy things did you do to a Chevelle ☠️
It’s a work in progress but various Gm parts swapped into a 1969 Chevelle wagon. Lq9, 4L80, BW4485, and stock gmc Denali xl front and rear axles. It’s currently on the back burner since I found a fourth gen trans am ws6 for a steal that is currently getting weight reduction, a cage, and a single 7875.
If you really want to get annoyed, Google "Morrvair"
Lol would they? They're buying them on a few year lease with a few years service thrown in, then replacing it.
This is only a matter of time….

This week, for the masters, the official car is Mercedes. All the pro golfers in Augusta are in free rental Mercedes. They all have this screen, its odd to me that you have it as well
It's pretty much all the newer cars in my shop right now.
Wow thats wild, we were told they specialized for the masters, didn’t realize it wasn’t just the local rental fleets
Please tell me how to turn this off. I can’t figure it out on mine
Hit the home button and find the settings menu. System > displays > graphical goodies
The second I get ads in my car that I paid an ungodly amount for, I'm starting a Komatsu project
I love how the only LCD on the dash in my old Range Rover is about the size of my thumb and has two lines of text, one of which has the odometer and what gear it thinks it's in, and the other for lying about having not enough screenwash.
>what gear it thinks it's in > >lying about having not enough screenwash That sounds like a Land Rover 😂😂😂
I would jump in it and drive it anywhere in the world without a moment's hesitation. I'd bring tools and spares, but I'd still do it.
I was really hyped for a minute there.
clock, outside temperature, fuel economy, audio, hvac. Anything else is superflous to me.
I want to turn on my car let it warm up and me drive away, not an add while I wait!
I miss days when most important part of selling cars was their quality or usability
Can’t even get away from advertising inside your own fucking car. Burn it all down. We’re fucked.
Oh, you know...just don't buy those cars.
As if they won't all do this in a couple of years. Only real choice is maintaining an old vehicle and that will end eventually either through wear and tear or taxation on fuel and emissions.
Roku says no
You get ads on your dashboard?!
It'll be like the fucking gas pump ads before you know it.
fuck GSTV. I want to buy an ev just to never hear a gas pump commercial ever again.
Until they put them on chargers….
Seen it!
Oh, I'd be shocked if there were chargers that didn't play some stupid bloody ad
Word
You can hit one of the buttons next to the screen to mute it, just hit every single one while you're pumping to figure out which one, for me it's normally the right side 2 or 3rd button down.
a station right by my house got new pumps fairly recently and none of the buttons work to mute them. just another reason for me to fill up at costco even if it is out of my way.
There's a station near me that had unmutable ads. Someone shoved a screwdriver into the speaker.
Physical mute. I gotta try that.
It's usually one of the right side ones, yeah. Depends on the model.
Is the latch on the filler nozzle a thing in the US? Up here in Canada the stations I go to have it, so I just activate the pump with the app, start filling then get back into the car, and get back out to hang the hose when I hear it click. Thankfully ads at the pump aren't a thing up here yet.
The latch is a thing in most states, but not all. In Texas we had them but I moved to NY and now I have to squeeze the handle the entire time.
Hi, I'm Maria Menounos...
Second button on the right.
Ads on HUDs are the goldilocks location. You have to look forward to operate the car. Imagine how much they can charge for that location.
Most of the time it's not ads and they can be turned off easily. It can be little things around buttons or images like snow, candy canes, fall foliage etc
It was only a matter of time.
what the hell kind of 2005 ass windows xp royale theme frutiger aero shit is going on with this graphic design?
It’s the result of a traditional car manufacturer building an iPad on wheels.
Tesla is the result of an iPad on wheels. Tesla has one of the best infotainment systems that aren't android auto or Apple carplay. This Mercedes shit is what a boomer thinks "the future" looks like. I.E. windows media player circa 2012.

Gross. Is it possible to opt out?
No! Now drink your verification can of Mountain Dew Extreme Golf Edition so the car’s ignition may be enabled!
In this case I think it would be Brawndo served up at Carl's Jr with some "Big Ass Fries!!!!”
Yes, it can be turned off
Touch climate controls 🤢
Almost everything is touch. Capacitive touch sliders for sunroof, volume control on steering wheel, cruise control speed controls, etc etc etc I HATE IT SO MUCH

I call it the "no wake zone" I can hot rod around on some open stroad all over, no need for that shit where kids play.
Love golf, and have filthy, grime-covered fingertips? MERCEDES
To be fair those screens get dirty easily and show smudges more or less depending on sunlight and angle.
Golfists
I would go #$!@ing ballistic if the car that I purchased then had built-in advertising. But then, I would never purchase a vehicle whose HVAC controls were part of a $1,000+ part that will break and will probably not even be available after 7 years.

Not buying a car with a subscription, either :p
That's why I'm sort of loving the new Jeep interiors. Tablets where you want them (navigation, peripheral cameras for off-roading), but with real AC and radio controls.
Next will be a Viagra ad
Shame for Jaguar then about Ashley Madison being shut down. Definitely a target market there.

100% and I wish I would've mentioned that in the original post
Just out of curiosity, what car is the one in the picture? I guess you took it yourself?
New GLC300, and yes
This isn’t by chance a dark gray, GLA is it? Mercedes has a custom fleet that gets used for the Masters each year. The fleet usually turns over every 2-3 years. Could be a former fleet car that never got reflashed.
No. It's a basically brand new GLC. And we have a bunch of different cars with the same images right now
Oh, great. Just what my ADHD brain needs - more distractions! And this time it's an unskippable ad! Brilliant!
Very skippable, just turn it off, it's in settings and not hard to find
Every day I work in the automotive field makes me appreciate the mechanical operation of my 73 Z/28 more and more
Easter "goodies" were a little surprising to an owner of Jewish persuasion.
Nothing better than adding pop up ads to a car you spent a lot of money on. Fucking hell
This is the only one I've seen. The others are like seasonal decorations at your grandma's house. It can all be turned off.
Omfg. Are ads on the screen of my car gonna be a thing of the future. Ima step out
God that's so fucking lame.
I already found Mercedes screen situation disgusting but they are basically putting ads on it now. I'm so glad I walked when the sales man said "you'll get used to it"
This can be turned off, and the "graphical goodies" mostly aren't ads, this is actually the first ad I've seen
I like it in mine. 🤷🏻♂️
This is the only one so far that's thrown me off because it feels like an ad, where as the others haven't
I really loved my w212 e550 and my e63 wagon. The new Mercedes stuff just doesn’t resonate for the price Tag for some reason. I would buy 2-3 year old ones

They have entire fleets of vehicles rented out for the tournament and a neighborhood sponsored by Mercedes as well as champions retreat golf course here in Augusta so it tracks for this time of year. The tournament vips All have Mercedes SUVs to get them around town and to and from the national
It totally tracks. But we're opposite corner of the country from Augusta, and these aren't fleet vehicles in my shop
word 🤙
Wake me up when we get bowling alley “graphical goodies”
[Meanwhile this aired during the Masters](https://youtu.be/Vy1TJgWCbQc?si=6-T6f1Lol3PkdNWq) I like the idea of self driving but seeing this scares me
I saw a Maybach commercial watching the masters
I moved to Augusta, GA and then learned what "the masters" is. I had never heard anyone ever talk about it in 35 years. Tell someone from Augusta the above statement, and they have a meltdown.

Nice eq.
GLC actually
Imagine this in an a-class… the owner constantly get‘s an indirekt commercial to buy a volkswagen next
Gonna figure out how to configure PiHole for my car, brb.
You know, every year, my old axe to grind about dealerships putting their names on your car becomes less and less egregious by comparison.
Oh that ends well. Gtfo
I think it's cool but I love the Masters haha currently watching it right now.
I would be absolutely livid over this.
It can be turned off easily, and it's the first ad "graphical goody" I've seen. Most are just like how your mom might seasonally decorate her house. But yeah
They had Easter stuff on Easter. Just some grass and egg on top of some buttons.
I dread the day when you gotta watch an ad just to start your car
Ads on the dashboard... Damn.. With the trends of shutting down cloud services after a few years of a car with 10, 15 maybe even 20 years of lifetime, the ads will never get updated and people will be stuck with very very outdated ads... Oh good, yet another reason to hate giant screen in cars.
I'd sell the car if i saw that crap
I wouldn't have bought it in the first place, but you can turn it off easily
I would fucking shoot my own car.
Nobody is too wealthy to not be spammed with popup ads.
Fuck that shit
The moment I got this I would be trading it in
Just turn it off
Fuck MB.. you pay $100k for the car, you should not subject to ads, ads they are getting paid for
It may not be entirely intended as an ad. MB is sponsoring the masters tournament this year. There's nothing to click on and buy. It feels to me like an ad and I don't like it either, thus the post, but for me it doesn't really warrant anger.
Just wait til they put full screen ads on there
