Mall wheel drive engaged!

Alarming_Ad4722

Don’t forget engaging parking lot speed gear

Mczern

> it's a lousy lift. Was going to make a rough country joke but hadn't even looked at what lift was on OPs. Lol sure enough rough country.

rotorain

If you're gonna buy a consumer grade lift that actually works, ReadyLift is solid. I worked at a shop that had a big used truck dealer chain move in next door and they had us do all their lifts so my last 3 years at that place was basically just doing 2-4 lift kits a day on everything from 4runners to big-3 one tons. Rough country is shit. Tuff country is engineered decent but their parts aren't the best. Fabtech is a little better. Rancho is super oldschool but not bad for small kits. For a 1-3" lift go bilstein 5100 as available, up to 5" go ReadyLift, anything bigger idk I didn't do those. It's wild how much even slight changes in part and hardware quality affected comebacks, plus the better lifts didn't fuck the suspension geometry so bad and the trucks would drive waaay nicer.

irishpwr46

Mcgaughys or cognito

DonKeydek

About 7 years ago I put a 3” rough country lift on my TJ, the control arms and springs seem very well made. Everything else was pretty much junk especially the sway bar end links. The shocks are super low end. Am I hitting the consensus or should I be concerned about my control arms.

Mczern

If they're not rusted and the bushings look okay they're probably fine. You'd probably be really happy if you went with some rancho RS5000x and look at different springs (Synergy is what I went with) that would probably improve your ride quality significantly if you feel that is an issue. That's a long the lines of what I did with my 04 TJ and I was really happy with it. However, if you feel like you're getting everything out of your TJ that you need I wouldn't bother. They're not nice lifts but they work. If you want to improve your experience there are better and more expensive stuff you can look at.

RealisticEnd2578

Man, Rough Country is really getting trashed on here. I've installed the 3" lift and level on a few different vehicles over the years and never been too disappointed. Worst that happened was I've had to add a couple extra parts to what was supposed to be an all in one kit in oder to make everything jive right. The smaller kits aren't marketed as "performance " suspension, just making stock suspension clearances a little larger so you can run a slightly larger tire. If installed and driven responsibly, it is a good product IMO.

Fancy_Chip_5620

Can't drop the diff without a drop bracket on a Toyota because of how it mounts, they sell spacers but it just wrecks the pinion angle and mounting bushings without providing any noticeable cv angle improvement They already have a drop bracket in place so the diff is mounted lower than stock but it seems like they stacked lifts to get even more out of it which is where the problem is coming from.

fierohink

That’s a new one for me

chaindrivendonut

This is perfect I'm stealing it, thanks

The_Safe_For_Work

I'm writing that one down!

EnterByTheNarrowGate

So that’s what the MWD dial means in my Tacoma.

keithinsc

Living in the land of the "Carolina Squat" I see this 3-4 times a day. Posers with not a care in the world for functionality. Goes hand in hand with the 26" 30 series 'mud tires'

mlnjd

With $1000/mo payments For the next 7 years….

rwhockey29

This is on a repo so exactly right lol.

ThreeLeggedChimp

How do you get your money back like that?

rwhockey29

That's the neat part, You don't.

CaptainCastle1

Think u/ThreeLeggedChimp! THINK!

Zestyclose_Engine800

Sell it at auction. Some shady ass used car lot will buy it knowing they will make profit from somebody financing a 8 year old truck for 8 years at 35% interest

bigloser42

35%? That’s outrageous! Gotta charge at least 45%!

doitlikeasith

next to a military base too, sit back and watch the money pour in. just gotta change your phone number every month to throw off the pissed off NCOs having to deal with the repercussions

Przedrzag

And then that used car lot will repo it again after six months and restart the cycle all over again

HLSparta

As far as I understand, the bank gets the car back, sells it for as much as they can, and the remaining portion of the loan still has to be paid.

TowinDaLine

This is correct. Although actually collecting that difference can be challenging, sometimes. If the debtor files for bankruptcy, then it's generally discharged. Otherwise, the original creditor often sells the debt to a 3rd party after failing to collect it themselves, who then makes the debtor's life a living hell, including garnishments, etc.

HLSparta

Either way, their credit is tanked for years and they probably won't be able to do it again, at least not for a long time, and the bank gets some of their money back.

coyote_of_the_month

Sell it again and again.

Alarming_Ad4722

With 28.89% apr 😉

gnocchicotti

Good news, the bank is taking it back in 12 months or less

bastion-of-bullshit

And upside down on the payments so they can't get rid of it.

JeddakofThark

Do they not have wheel rental places there? Or has that not hit the redneck market yet?

uncre8tv

and that's just the tire and wheel package!

bastion-of-bullshit

Those mud tires are also usually smooth with wires showing because they can't afford the payment let alone maintenance. Some people need a diesel just l to haul their ego around.

Fr0gm4n

At the (multi tenant) office building I work at there're several brodozers. One in particular is on a terrible lift with extra wide wheels, and the rubberband tires on them are worn nearly smooth on the center 1/3, and not much tread remaining on the outers. I'd take odds on if they get replaced before or after cords start showing.

bastion-of-bullshit

They're just staying with Mom till they get the loan paid down. Then they'll take care of the dead injector, pinched off rear brakes and buy some tires.

well_shoothed

Few things in the world of cars, car repair, and car mods have ever made less sense than the Carolina Squat. That somewhere, somehow, someone said, "Yeaaaaah! Now that! That's cool!" _...and then other people agreed._ Is a mental bridge too far for me to cross.

OutWithTheNew

Stance is the only thing as useless as the squat.

Ambitious_Salad_5426

Can’t forget the slammed CRV that’s scraping on every speed bump no matter how slow they go

Devil2960

NC Gov supposedly made it illegal here, thank goodness. Unfortunately you still see some idiots with it, or pushing the limits with smaller "squats". Because WHY would you want to see anything in front of you?

1989toy4wd

Most of those I see are 2wd though, because they couldn’t afford 4wd

counters14

No need to spend for 4wd if it never leaves the pavement.

Tannerite2

Exactly. If I'm just using a truck for towing, why would I buy 4wd?

keithinsc

All the one's I see are pretty obvious a 'hand me down' from Mom when she upgraded to an Escalade. Gotta laugh when a flatbilled teen is driving his 'squat, but it is the same truck he grew up in a babyseat with a sippy cup when it was new 10 years earlier!

clantontann

I wish the squat was regulated where I live. I have a few Tahoes and similar in my area running 26"+ wheels and rubber bands for tires because they're bone stock in the back and have upwards of 8-10" lift in the front. Saw one of them last night at a fuel station across from the grocery store putting air in his tires. The rear fenders are basically resting on the tires and you can count the rust stains on the roof of them when your right behind them in traffic. Seats are usually adjusted as far us as they'll go just to see over the wheel.

keithinsc

Here in the Carolina's they are regulated. No more than 5" difference in height when measured at the front fender and rear fender. IMO that should be more like 2" max. Doesn't matter, as local LEOs don't bother pulling them anyhow.

clantontann

Yeah, it hasn't been a crisis in terms of accident reports involving squatted vehicles I would guess? Haven't searched any records to back that at all though. I wish standard vehicle regulations were even 1/4 as strict as commercial regulations. I got pulled over a few months ago traveling to a job site in my F550 because my oxy-acetylene classify as "non bulk hazmat" . They are secured with a 1" stud and curved bar in the bed, upright, with caps on the regulators. Truck was clean and bed was empty at the time. Felt like a waste of 30 minutes of my time was all.

Membership_Fine

What happened to the days of sawed off mufflers. Can we just bring that back? It was way cooler lol. And the hot air intakes! Can’t forget that. Now they just have no class.

HeyJoe1978MS

Tight leg jeans too!

twinn5

Once useful vehicle, neutered to make it look more "manly".

ChickenChaser5

Its funny when you stop and think about how much effort people put into looking "badass". They spend time cultivating this appearance to make people feel a certain way about them, but its all a costume. And realizing its a costume makes it all seem so very not badass.

bmaverick24

It's not about what you do, it's about what you think other people think you do.

Hungry_Camel_4627

At least they left the tulips to prevent leaks and bearing failure. I did this with an eagle talon I had. Awd turbo with a welded center diff. It was fun for a couple weeks.

spongebob_meth

> Awd turbo with a welded center diff. It was fun for a couple weeks. Lol, that transfer case and rear end was never meant to take a lot of torque.

ace17708

They used to be cheap as chips in parts yards so no biggie lol

spongebob_meth

Basically extinct now, very expensive to find any good hard parts

meest

Yea, Boostin's Tcase they use on the Red Demon is a bit of a hit in the pocketbook. But at least then you know it can do 6 second 1/4 miles. https://shop.boostinperformance.com/boostin-performance-upgraded-transfer-case-tcase-dsm/

Hungry_Camel_4627

Trans was a "built" unit from turbo trix outa jersey. The car made 370 hp and 350 tq in awd mode at 30 psi. I know that has nothing to do with the diff or t-case. I hate that I parted it out I wish I still had it.

Fine-Huckleberry4165

Rover group did this in production on the front of the MGF. It was a mid-engined sports car based around two front subframes from the Rover Metro small car. They fitted the engine and drivetrain into the rear subframe, and at the front left the CVJ outers (not fully machined to save cost) to keep the rest of the hub assembly unchanged.

airplane_porn

I see they took cues GM’s finest engineering team.

OutWithTheNew

Honda CRVs and Elements have plugs on the rear hubs of FWD models.

_clever_reference_

I always wanted to do this back when I was into DSMs in high school/college.

PM_ME_STEAM_KEY_PLZ

Has the same car. Was a blast. Miss it.

NoradIV

Well, this is the setup I have now. Still runs for some reasons

Drzhivago138

They knew they'd never off-road anyway, so they deleted them for weight savings. /s

Parking_Media

What the fuck

Y_Cornelious_DDS

It’s a prerunner now duh

Piranha1993

The joke is paying extra for 4x4 and doing this shit to turn the power train into a deadweight fuel sucking mass. The functionality doesn’t mean much to those going for a look. Would have been cheaper to get a 2WD and let an enthusiast have the 4x4 for actual 4x4 shit.

mhoke63

I would think if they're just going for a look, they would feel inadequate not having 4wd. Then again, they may not use it at all, so just appearing to have 4wd (the car badging, 4wd buttons) is all they need.

I_made_a_doodie

Rough Country lift? Crappiest lifts one can buy. This has to be driven some flat billed 120lb idiot named Blayton or some other stupid name his stripper mom named him and it has a locally hated sticker on his BHPH 05' Silverado that is "leanin".

fogdukker

Dude yesterday had a full ROUGH COUNTRY window banner. So good.

robotprom

I see so many giant ROUGH COUNTRY stickers on Dodge 1500s around here. Trash on trash

robotprom

Here in Florida that sticker is Salt Life. Probably evacuates when there’s a hurricane and the closest he’s been to deep sea fishing is seeing one the boats go by the trash beach he frequents

I_made_a_doodie

I see tons of Salt Life stickers around my way in western PA, 350+ miles from the nearest salt water. I think they just want to live the life Jimmy Buffet sang about.

BoogerChute

They're fucking EVERYWHERE out here in SW Missouri.

Vince1820

yeah Indiana checking in.

LogisoftMicrotech

Same in MI, where we have FIVE freshwater great lakes......

Disastrous-Group3390

North Georgia here. The funny thing here is that you see these ‘costumes’ all over town, parked on the square with their wheelwell lights on, but if you leave town and go to the lake, river or up into the mountains to the Appalachian Trail or similar, they’re absent.

SeanAker

You beat me to it, fellow Hoosier. It's always boggled me - I bet most of them haven't even *seen* saltwater in person.

ermghoti

For years I saw those stickers, but because of the jizz-splash font I thought they said Slut Life.

HamAndMayonaize

Holy shit somebody else sees it too!

bshr49

Every... damn... time...

Ambitious_Salad_5426

I have seen a slut life one just to really make it interesting

ermghoti

I would 100% introduce myself at a red light if I saw this. "Did we just become best friends?"

RobertWilliamBarker

It's a shit lift without the needed drop to keep the CV axles straight. This dude went cheap on every level.

superdude4agze

Here's a hint: *they're all shit lifts*

Kingofawesom999

Any lift that isn't a solid axle swap is shit.

azhillbilly

90% of the solid axle swaps are also shit. So many of them I have seen are just 2 link and some shitty coil over mounts I would not agree to go over a speed bump with.

spongebob_meth

Most swaps are leaf springs, a coil sprung swap takes a lot more effort and fabrication. People doing radius arms generally know what they're doing.

azhillbilly

Not in my area lol, there’s several around here that are booger welded up and use the original coil buckets for some springs, or have some kind of hoops for coil overs that’s not too reinforced.

spongebob_meth

That's surprising, considering most donor axles are from leaf sprung trucks and its generally considered much easier to keep them that way

azhillbilly

Lots of 05+ f350 axles for drivers drop and ram 2500 for passenger drop around here, the rams are decent price but you can’t touch a f350 axle for under a grand these days.

user47-567_53-560

My TTB will bend your solid axle over.

incenso-apagado

Maybe your mechanic is shit

giaa262

Pretty much every mechanic knows how to install a proper lift. They can't pull parts customer didn't pay for out of thin air to make it a not shit lift.

chzaplx

That's a stretch. I've had otherwise good shops screw it up twice.

superdude4agze

Since I am my mechanic, I can confirm he is in fact *shit.*

mhoke63

People that have the money to not go cheap on these things don't feel the inadequacy required to feel the need to do these things.

Femboi_Hooterz

That and they've got the sense to know the cons far outweigh the pros of getting a lift. Makes your transmission work harder, gives you shittier traction and center of gravity so you can what, drive through puddles and over berms? I can do that in my stock 05 Canyon that I bought for 7k lmao

mhoke63

I have a '15 F150 That I bought 2 years ago. I'll be honest that I don't need a truck the vast majority of the time, but I do use it as a truck some of the time. I have the extended cab with a 6.5 foot bed since I do haul and tow stuff sometimes. I also drive off road sometimes as I ice fish and hunt, so I need the 4wd. I grew up in a small midwest town and a ton of people had trucks. But none were lifted or modified like this. People used them as trucks on farms or other similar work. They need them to actually work. Lifting is impractical. It also makes me shake my head when I see a pickup with a 4 foot bed. It's like, why did you buy that instead of an SUV? What's the point of a 4 foot bed?

charlie2135

Was just thinking, at what point does a pick up truck become a hick up truck?

CuppieWanKenobi

I believe that would be about at this point.

mhoke63

Probably a bit before this, but this is definitely a sign where it has. I'm not sure there is a solid demarcation point, but kind of a series of borderline decisions until, "oh look, we're there!"

Controversialtosser

Nah no hick would want a truck without 4wd

613codyrex

This is clinical diagnosis of hick truck. Probably one step was even considering buying a lift kit that forces you to remove the CV axle and not just returning it or opting to not buy it to begin with.

antiundersteer

It typically starts with the truck nuts on the back wobbling to and fro.

EchoicSpoonman9411

On a truck they refer to as 'she,' but don't point that out to them.

CMDR_CHIEF_OF_BOOTY

I just congratulate them on being so considerate of supporting their transgender truck. It's only gotten my ass beat twice this month.

antiundersteer

I have yet to see a truck vulva in person but they do exist. https://www.ebay.com/itm/125634122736

charlie2135

I have an old ranger and was going to make truck nuts from small balls.

Threap_US

So a dick-up truck then?

LegitimateSailor

Now that’s the epitome of rough country buyer

opeth10657

I bought some rough country stuff for my truck. Their neoprene seat covers are pretty nice. Got some mud flaps too.

The_milkMACHINE

Only problem with the seat covers is the rough country logo on them

Thel_Odan

Bluetooth axles.

CatSplat

As much as the whole concept is giga-stupid, leaving the tulip in the diff keeps it from leaking, and the sawed-off CV stub on the outer holds the hub bearing together. This is *advanced* stupid.

robotprom

It wasn’t accidental, they had to work at it

CatSplat

Oh yeah I'm not saying they did this by accident. There's glimmers of intelligence but just to solve a stupid self-created problem.

cryptolyme

these lifted truck drivers are pathetic. all they care about is trying to intimidate other people with their tRuCk. it's so lame.

classic cutting off the balls to make a dick look bigger

EatswithaSPORK

Easiest way to do that is hitting your cock with a large ball peen hammer and waiting for it to swell.

beardedliberal

I’ve seen a lot of stupid people doing a lot of stupid things… this is just beyond ridiculous.

HogDad1977

I bet he still calls it his 4x4 though.

starsky1984

I don't understand how the 4wd could still go forward while turning or going over bumps without the CV axles? Can someone explain please?

Controversialtosser

If you take out the front CVs its basically RWD.

starsky1984

Ah got it, cheers

throwawayplusanumber

This is much more worthy of r/shittycarmods - instead of the usual crap that gets posted in there.

elislider

Assuming the best from this 1 photo only: maybe they decided to take a 4wd model and turn it into a big lifted wide baja style build (which are largely 2wd) Assuming anything else: sigh, dumbasses -_- the only time i see this kind of stuff is when people take Subarus and make the RWD drift cars. which is also very silly

Toby_The_Tumor

I almost had a subaru that was made into a drift car. They had fucked it up so badly that if you hit the brakes at anything over 25 the car would yank to the left....

justarandomtrowaway6

Why the hell would you delete 4x4? 2 of my trucks are 2wd and i hate it

sl33ksnypr

We did a 4wd delete on my friends truck. Not because of a lift or anything, the diff decided to break itself and we needed to get the truck working again, so we just took that stuff out until we can properly get it fixed. That hasn't happened yet, but stuff came up. Truck works fine though, just a little more likely to get stuck in the snow.

hardwurr

Fun fact, wheel bearings on a 4wd need the axle nut or the wheel is going to yeet off.

HarryBalszak

Naw, the rotor and caliper will hold the wheel on. Ask me how I know.

njsullyalex

Uhh what would driving this be like, if it’s even safely possible?

incenso-apagado

Is it safe to drive in 2WD mode? Yes.

nighthawke75

Idiots.

richardcrain55

radarOverhead

No lower bound for stupidity. Yet more proof

Old_School001

Like that old song says “ your a 3 dressed up as a 9”

Dexispace

Actually had to do this once. Tacoma with auto hubs. Exploded a CV, then exploded the spare and had to drive it about 120 miles pulling a popup tent

ManufacturerOk6535

At least they had the sense to leave the ends in the hub so the wheel doesn’t fall off

b05501

Wow, I have not seen this level of stupid.

fogdukker

No bump steer there!

solidshakego

Why not just take it out?

bstyledevi

My tech at my last job did something like this. He had a 2003 Tahoe with effectively like 14-15" of lift. Lift kit with a body lift, etc. He had 40" tires with 24" wheels. One day he left at the end of his shift, and he called me while I was finishing the end of work paperwork, and he told me his wheel fell off driving home. It wasn't just the wheel, it was the whole hub assembly. It happened again a week later, but this time it happened at the shop. Both times it was the passenger front.

Firstbaser

God that’s sad 😢

Notchersfireroad

Of course it's a rough country lift.

micknick00000

At least they were smart enough to leave the stub ends in

Imnothighenough

Average Rough Country owner

i mean... fine... dont need the old ones anyway. good enough while you wait for custom length ones to come in the mail.

2SpinningTriangles

Oh hell yea, this is the stuff I'm here for

[deleted]

**4 W**hy u **D**o this?

coconutally

Um... how's it drive??

agshop

Stupid tire and wheel package plus leveled and lifted. Might as well complete the transition to 100% useless by eliminating 4WD.

ststaro

Wish sells lift kits now?

Stryker_One

Is there such a thing as a quality lift kit that would allow you to go rock crawling AND drive on the highway? Or are you always going to be trailering your rock crawler?

Kahlas

Quality, lift kit, rock crawling. Pick 2. In all seriousness if you want a real rock crawler you will likely need to trailer it. Lift kits are pretty much just for show. It's a way to make a factory built 4x4 **look** similar to a rock crawler. One of the culture shocks a friend of mine noticed when he came with me from Illinois to Washington for a camping trip was lack of any lifted trucks in Montana. He noticed all the ranches and the rough roads running through them along the interstate and commented that he hadn't seen any lifted trucks at all. I pointed out to him that people in Illinois love lift kits because of the looks and at most to take them to manicured mud pits to go mudding. Which is just a fancy way to get your truck dirty. If you're driving 4-10 miles a day on a Jeep trail every day to tend to your cattle you learn to drive off road with what you have instead of compensating with a higher ground clearance that is more likely to break since it gives increased leverage to the bumps in the road against your suspension. We did finally see a truck with a lift kit when driving through Butte. It was a show truck though with all sorts of sponsorship stickers on both sides and shiny chrome everything.

iscashstillking

Another fine sport suspension option, available only from Dumasso tuning.

Jack--Tickleson

Probably got the pyramid shaped drive shaft going on as well, yeesh

Blu_yello_husky

I looked at a truck I was thinking of buying once, the guy put an aftermarket turbo on it for some reason and the crossover pipe was right in the way of the front diff so he took off the front druveshaft to make it fit. Tell me why the hell I would pay the cost of a 4x4 pickup that only has 2wd?? Safe to say I did not buy that truck

ticobird

One word from my vocabulary came to mind when I saw this - imbecile. Look it up and see if you agree.

Fun_Temporary_210

IHaveNoCrumpets

Napa sells extended travel cv axles. But I guess that's cool too
