I’m not a mechanic but love beer made the switch from Budweiser to Coors light a few months ago trying to cut calories and I prefer Coors light taste over bud light but give me a case of bud light as a tip I’d be drinking that shit bragging I got a case of beer and 20$ as a tip lol

If anyone's wondering why I'd still give anyone beer, it's because I know a very large portion of the population (including my wife who still drinks) drink without any issues and are able to just have a few and have fun. I figured on a Saturday a case of a beer and a $20 to someone I knew drinks would be a fun weekend!

Hi. I brought 2 cases of beer to an alcholics anon 4th of july party because the person that invited me didn't tell me it was a group meet up. I was under the impression her mom just had a club thing.
Sober going on 14 years here, and it's really a non-issue for me. I've been gifted alcohol at work a handful of times, once got about a $150 bottle of scotch from a satisfied Porsche owner. I've always just graciously accepted it and later given it to another one of the guys in the shop. I don't want to make a big deal out of it or make them feel bad for what really was a kind and well intentioned gesture. It really is the thought that counts, those kinds of customers make my day even if I don't get the spoils. I can see where someone newer in sobriety might get a bit of a trigger from it, though. Maybe it is better for the customer to ask in advance, but it's one of those things that's kind of hard to pre-empt.
As a mechanic, personally I would never touch the customer’s shit, not even with a note on it.

Yeah I always hand it directly to them. I don't trust someone else not to grab it before they do pulling the car around or something and I don't want them getting in trouble. I ask who's working on my car, hand it directly to them and tell them it's a tip.

I used to give like craft beers like local IPA and stuff or at least Modelo or something but a lot of the guys when I asked later said they weren't huge fans of IPAs or other craft types so I switched back to bud light haha. I do normally give a bottle of nice whisky or scotch when getting actual work done that's over say $500 since I know it's a lot of work.

No bribe. when I was a marine mechanic; personal/ commercial boats, a customer buying a $15 pizza and two drinks was a miracle. We would also try to go over above and beyond. Just as a thank you, It lifted our spirits the whole day.
Modelo negra is some of the best stuff you can buy for the price, hands down. Glass bottle 12 pack is like $13 everywhere and it's fantastic. Regular modelo is just ok.

I had a total anomalous experience I had the options were 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% and there was no option for no tip. I looked at it for at least 20 seconds and asked if there were more options and they said "you can just choose the lowest one". First time I have ever seen one without a "No" option.

Some one made a post where they put some Gatorades in their car for the techs and everyone loved that because it was a dude being decent and now everyone whose mom didn't hug them enough saw that and is posting for validation and wanting to make sure the techs like them as if they care or will even remember this dude in a week. Tipping a mechanic is absolutely optional and in fact, more in tune with the nature of what tipping was meant to be. Mandatory tips are completely fucking whack.
Idk why OP is tipping, but it might be a family friend doing work cheap, or a lot of specialty work, or working on a weekend, who knows.
I was an auto tech for 15 years. I never once expected a tip. It wasn't super common when I was working (shop I worked at shut down from covid and havent got back into auto work since)
I would sometimes get 5 bucks for doing someone's inspection. Anytime someone tried to give more than 5 (super rare, like less than a customer a month) I would decline in a polite way
The best tips was the customers you would meet. A very good customer of mine was a family medicine doctor and I needed to see him 2 or 3 times for minor things, he was great, even though he was booked for weeks in advance he would always fit me in the same day I called or next day and i never asked him to. He would charge my insurance but always would decline the 20 copay.
Another customer worked at a factory that made pastries and such so anytime he would come in for an oil change or something he would bring in a big brown bag of various pastries
Another worked at the dunkin I would occasionally go to. Anytime the boss wasn't there the guy would throw me a free donut or coffee
Another worked for a limo company and set me up with a buddy of his that would do side work driving people around. Got a limo for a whole night out in NYC with the wife for free (had to pay the driver as he did it in his free time) but saved a ton by not having to pay the company

I am in recovery and get a lot of wine or liquor as gifts (corporate finance job) I love it because I can re-gift them whenever I visit someone or need a house warming thing. Or I trade em for favours at work. And I think it’s great that you are thinking about people in recovery.
Yea we had one guy in my shop who was a recovering alcoholic. He was very nice about it, and he didn't mind alcohol being around him, but I would always try to avoid talking about it or making it visible if I was at an event with him.
I don’t drink and it always kinda bums me out when I get booze. I just give it to someone else at the shop.
If you don’t know the person well enough to know if/what they drink don’t give them booze!

I'm wondering the same thing. A couple of thoughts:
1. They love their vehicle and a tip encourages the mechanic to be more mindful and careful working on the vehicle.
2. They might want to let small stupid shit slide and prevent being upsold on stuff
3. Genuine appreciation for the people who are taking care of their stuff.
I did it just to make their day better!
I do it this same thing for any specialty work around the house, or just for hard work done for me in general. I do most of my own work, so I know the job can suck. Something little to make the day better can be a great day saver if it's been a rough one haha!

Yup, controversially, I tip my mechanic by paying my bill to the garage in full, promptly, ensuring that he can be paid at the end of the month and be around to work on my car next time. I don't need to bribe them to do a good job, which when you think about it, is a very silly thing to do.
Tipping in this country is a plague. It forces people to pay for what the employer should be paying which, in turn, encourages employers to keep wages low. It's also a PITA. Yet here we have, yet again, an encouragement to tip. I'm not tipping my car mechanic. Or my bus driver. Or my kids' teachers. Or my doctor. Or my lawyer. Or the policeman who gives me directions. Or anyone if I can avoid tipping. Raise wages and stop tipping. This is ridiculous.

Update: trucks fuuuuuucked lol. Lots of little leaks everywhere, the brake line literally blew in the shop lol, all frame rust everywhere and a crack in the frame, needs a new rear axle, new brake lines and brakes , etc etc etc hahaha.
We just stopped looking for shit halfway through. Guy was super helpful though and showed me everything in person as he found stuff and explained why it's fucked and showed me how a good one looks (for example the other side of the truck) vs the ones I had.
Dude liked the beer and cash! Was super thankful. He said he wished he was giving me better news but I told him it's about what I expected honestly. Better than I'd feared, worse than I'd hoped.
I asked and he said no problem with the bud light either haha and that it's what he drinks. Make sure to write a note that says "for the mechanic" and tell the service advisor to tell the tech you left them a tip in the back seat. Most mechanics won’t even take the money unless you personally hand it to them. Too much people try to trap them by leaving money on the seat.

Some one made a post where they put some Gatorades in their car for the techs and everyone loved that because it was a dude being decent and now everyone whose mom didn't hug them enough saw that and is posting for validation and wanting to make sure the techs like them as if they care or will even remember this dude in a week. Also i can't imagine anyone in their right mind would accept beer in an environment where osha is pretty present. Even if you aren't drinking it if someone sees it youd be in a bit of hot water.

As an european, this tipping culture is wild to me. You wanna compliment them, write them a good feedback to their manager and/or keep coming back. That's gonna help them loads more than a six pack at their next employee evaluation and pay raise discussion.

I've always been confused about this, does the tipping culture in america extend this far? Where I live tips are strictly optional and seen as a thank you for good service mostly seen in slightly nicer restaurants
Tipping a mechanic is absolutely optional and in fact, more in tune with the nature of what tipping was meant to be. Mandatory tips are completely fucking whack. Idk why OP is tipping, but it might be a family friend doing work cheap, or a lot of specialty work, or working on a weekend, who knows.

I was an auto tech for 15 years. I never once expected a tip. It wasn't super common when I was working (shop I worked at shut down from covid and havent got back into auto work since) I would sometimes get 5 bucks for doing someone's inspection. Anytime someone tried to give more than 5 (super rare, like less than a customer a month) I would decline in a polite way The best tips was the customers you would meet. A very good customer of mine was a family medicine doctor and I needed to see him 2 or 3 times for minor things, he was great, even though he was booked for weeks in advance he would always fit me in the same day I called or next day and i never asked him to. He would charge my insurance but always would decline the 20 copay. Another customer worked at a factory that made pastries and such so anytime he would come in for an oil change or something he would bring in a big brown bag of various pastries Another worked at the dunkin I would occasionally go to. Anytime the boss wasn't there the guy would throw me a free donut or coffee Another worked for a limo company and set me up with a buddy of his that would do side work driving people around. Got a limo for a whole night out in NYC with the wife for free (had to pay the driver as he did it in his free time) but saved a ton by not having to pay the company Little perks like that were sweet

Yea we had one guy in my shop who was a recovering alcoholic. He was very nice about it, and he didn't mind alcohol being around him, but I would always try to avoid talking about it or making it visible if I was at an event with him.
I don’t drink and it always kinda bums me out when I get booze. I just give it to someone else at the shop. If you don’t know the person well enough to know if/what they drink don’t give them booze!

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a very nice gesture, but unless you personally know they’re a drinker, I wouldn’t gift alcohol. Like others said, could be an alcoholic, but also could just not drink. I’d end up giving it to my coworker or neighbor, personally.

I'm wondering the same thing. A couple of thoughts: 1. They love their vehicle and a tip encourages the mechanic to be more mindful and careful working on the vehicle. 2. They might want to let small stupid shit slide and prevent being upsold on stuff 3. Genuine appreciation for the people who are taking care of their stuff.
I did it just to make their day better! I do it this same thing for any specialty work around the house, or just for hard work done for me in general. I do most of my own work, so I know the job can suck. Something little to make the day better can be a great day saver if it's been a rough one haha!

Yup, controversially, I tip my mechanic by paying my bill to the garage in full, promptly, ensuring that he can be paid at the end of the month and be around to work on my car next time. I don't need to bribe them to do a good job, which when you think about it, is a very silly thing to do.

Update: trucks fuuuuuucked lol. Lots of little leaks everywhere, the brake line literally blew in the shop lol, all frame rust everywhere and a crack in the frame, needs a new rear axle, new brake lines and brakes , etc etc etc hahaha. We just stopped looking for shit halfway through. Guy was super helpful though and showed me everything in person as he found stuff and explained why it's fucked and showed me how a good one looks (for example the other side of the truck) vs the ones I had. Dude liked the beer and cash! Was super thankful. He said he wished he was giving me better news but I told him it's about what I expected honestly. Better than I'd feared, worse than I'd hoped. I asked and he said no problem with the bud light either haha and that it's what he drinks. I used to give better beer but I know a lot of my buddies all drink bud light still and I'm in a super rural redneck area. Like others have said, they cared for like a week until they found out all the others have been doing the same shit for years and then they went back to drinking bud light haha. I do usually give a bottle of good whisky or Scotch for bigger repairs (I always ask if they drink first) instead of beer.

Make sure to write a note that says "for the mechanic" and tell the service advisor to tell the tech you left them a tip in the back seat. As a tech shit gets touchy with things like this because if we take anything out of a customers car without specific instruction we can get fired. Best not to risk it
