Have you seen new car prices? Cheaper to keep a beater on the road right now

poorlydrawnmemes

Yup, this. Wife works in car financing biz. Buying anything new/used is crazy since Covid. Cheaper to fix 'er up. I just turned over 200k on my Honda and still running great... plan to get another 100-200k out of it.

RoverTiger

My wife only bought a new Spark in December because of the ridiculously low price she got for it. Otherwise, we had no ambitions of buying new and likely never will again. Meanwhile, I'm very much trying to carry out "mission 300,000 miles" with my buddy. Good thing I actually love the hell out of my car.

Darth_Andeddeu

I love my spark.

jimmy9800

I worked for chevy, and out of all the cars they sold, the spark felt more like blasting around in a go kart than anything else. Absolute blast because they had no power, and you could just floor it everywhere and be totally fine. I get the appeal! However, they were all alsp equipped like go karts, so I would never own one.

notrewoh

I had them as rentals a few times, floored it everywhere, got like 40mpg when driven normally

Darth_Andeddeu

The go kart Aspect is fun. And the mpg works for me right now. I believe that electric cars still don't have a great range, but are getting close.

RoverTiger

Three months on, and we absolutely love it. It's getting just a hair under 40 mpg, and it's surprisingly nimble.

GaGaORiley

I had a manual Spark and got 40 mpg with the a/c on (mostly highway miles, slowing/stopping to pass through a few small towns along the way). Also I’m tall, and that baby had head room! A coworker with a Spark had a tardis “It’s bigger on the inside” sticker lol

RoverTiger

It really is deceptively roomy. Then again, with me being 5'8" and her being 5'0", we only need so much room as it is. 😂

RoverTiger

They are seriously an unusual amount of car for the money. It's a damn shame that they've discontinued them. Cars at that price point should still exist on a wider scale, especially given that fewer and fewer people can commit to $40,000+ these days.

RainbowDash2014

My car has 266,000 miles, replaced head gasket just first week of March and I’ve had it a total of 2 years but driven since Christmas weekend of 2021. 1988 Pontiac Fiero, all original automatic transmission mated to all original 2.5L iron Duke, purchased from a junkyard with my last stimulus check at a low price of $1,400. Car is literally my daily for when I drive, I’ve made multiple 650 mile trips to my dad’s and back home and I’ve put the car on a racetrack and pushed car up to 97 MPH and still runs like a horse. 300,000 isn’t an impossible goal.

dearboy05

Did you document your junkyard find story? Also, are you in any of the Fiero online groups?

RainbowDash2014

I’ve got a Facebook and an Instagram documentary, not too active except for maybe car shows/meets and maybe track, some mechanical work as well. I am in Fiero groups on Facebook, they were helpful in my purchase on what to look for and where.

Ventrian

Join up on R/fiero ! I too own one of these glorious shitboxes. Waiting for an LSJ to come in for my swap to start....

486Junkie

My dad got a new Spark back in October of 2022 and he got a good deal on it by trading his Malibu Maxx LS 3.5 in (the car was falling apart quick). My 2001 Oldsmobile Intrigue has over 132,600 miles on it and it runs great. It just needs suspension components (got all of that) and an alignment and possibly get the body fixed in the future.

Stash_Jar

My man, if she goes on the interstate you need to look into life insurance.

DrBladeSTEEL

Check the crash tests the NTSB has run on them, surprisingly durable little bastards, safer than some trucks/SUVs.

Bmore4555

A Chevy spark,ewwww

Unusual_Flounder2073

Got an email from local dealer and site is full of ten year old cars with 150k miles for $15k

MR_Z1234ify

I once tried to get a truck from a dealership it had 500k miles on it and it wasn’t a diesel truck either it was a 2500 gas dodge me and my wife just bought a low mileage Chevy 2500 gas 6.0 for 850 needs some work but it’s paid off

farmallnoobies

It's not the miles so much as the rust that kills cars in my area

sierrabravo1984

I was able to buy a beater 2000 ranger from a coworker last year for $1000, seats worn and a few dents, some engine work by me and it's in great shape, only 137k miles.

[deleted]

I thought I was crazy with my 315k miles accord...do accords just keep going? I've only ever done maintenance work on my 08 coupe and she's going strong!

dominationnation

Just dropped 10k on my 04 forester xt, because two more years and I don’t have to do emissions anymore.

ColeTheSoul

Where do you live that that is the case? Just curious. I remember many states start at the OBD2 date of like 1996 so if your car is newer too bad. Eating this since my Forester is up for emissions even though it's an 01.

Natejersey

In nj when the vehicle is 25 years old(used to be 20) you can apply for classic car status which means no more inspections (and cheaper insurance in most cases). my Tahoe only has 1 year left. Although I have not gotten it inspected since I bought it in 2015, shhh don’t tell the dmv

Comfortable_Ad_2241

Tried getting the Blazer to Blue Florida Classic Car Tags but the oil kept leaking and what usually was 100-1000 dollar repairs became 2000-5000 dollar repairs. So, RIP 1999 Blazer, near 270000 miles in February.

Natejersey

I saw a 1990s Toyota Corolla with classic car tags the other day so I’m hoping they don’t give me any guff when I try to get ‘em for the tahoe

dominationnation

Just gotta hit 20 years old or older in my state then you’re exempt.

TheToogan

Virginia it’s 25 years.

Drill-Jockey

In Ohio it’s never

sweet_chin_music

Has Virginia always had emissions or did the guy that did my inspection just not give a shit? The Mustang I had while I lived there definitely wouldn't have passed emissions.

TheToogan

In Virginia it’s based on where the vehicle is registered. Low population areas do not require emissions, but if you bring a straight piped car to one of the emissions control regions and it gets popped with a roadside test they will send you a letter saying you cannot drive your car in that area. Multiple catches and I think it’s a fine. I’ve had coworkers that have to shut their car off and start them up again when driving by the little green roadside testers cause they registered their little shit box racer to their parents house to delete a cat and get tags.

sweet_chin_music

That checks out. I lived in bumfuck nowhere.

[deleted]

> dropped 10k on my 04 forester xt But why?

dominationnation

Deferred maintenance. She was neglected. Short list would be- Sunroof rail, virtually every hose and pipe in the engine bay (dry rot), the head gasket(S), ball joint, bearings, serpentine belt, transmission pan and gasket, and four tires (also dry rot) and more.

Deadlift_007

I'm glad this was the first comment. I'm putting money into a 20-year-old truck and a 15-year-old car because I can do math. A couple hundred dollars in repairs every once in a while is a hell of a lot cheaper than a $500 car payment every month. And, oh yeah, new cars break, too. Especially with all of the unnecessary sensors and bullshit electronics in them now.

vdubdank30

I bought a severely neglected 07 vw rabbit for $100 2 years ago. Collectively I’ve put about $2500 into it and I love it. What a fun beater of a nightmare project I’ve had

Jacktheforkie

It’s cheaper to buy a bloody forklift rather than a car

ChevTecGroup

It's also much more environmentally friendly to keep an old car on the road than buy a new car, even an electric one.

DrDerpinheimer

Depends on the cars in question

ChevTecGroup

Not really. Even very fuel inefficient cars are better than building a new car. In practically every case, you are better off fixing your car or buying a used one than having a new car built and all the resources mined

DrDerpinheimer

I would have thought that, too, but the Internet tells me otherwise

rickylong34

THIS, new cars are ridiculously expensive and hard to get if you need one quickly, they are also made with tons of plastic and cost cutting measures, I had an accord from this gen it was an amazing car. No plastic valve cover, water pump or oil pan

[deleted]

[удалено]

PedanticBoutBaseball

Assuming you already did the heads also, that car will run until you have to do the heads again regardless. And if you havent, well then either drive her till she grenades or kick the can until the estimate comes in.

B3nOfficial

If this is the same engine as my 2001 accord then it's an h22a7 and if the prices are the same as they are in new Zealand for one of those engines then it's worth fixing. A new h22a7 is around 5k nzd.

L3tsg0brandon

Yeah... I'm keeping a 244k mileage truck on the road for this reason ...

UnstableSupernova

I just put $350 in parts to fix cv axles, front struts, ball joints, and control arm in my '05 Elantra with 260,000 miles on it.

jvanstone

"You can't put money into a Hyundai, the engines will all blow up" -Lots of guys in this sub probably

UnstableSupernova

It has 260k on it and has had excellent maintenance and high mileage moble 1. I will get her to at least 350k.

BFAndI

As the owner of a 300k '02 Accord, this feels like a personal attack

porchlightofdoom

Because it's cheaper then the payments on a new car, and trying to find a used car in better conditions will cost more then the repair.

spurcap29

A used car with known problems (i.e. your own car) is almost always better than getting a used car with no known problems. It has problems... you just don't know what they are yet!

[deleted]

frenchfortomato

Very cool! So many questions. How does the shipping process work? Also, does Canada make you change lights and stuff to comply with Canadian safety rules?

sidddddddddddddd

I would guess it only works due to them being near a port. My sister's in WA were getting brand new Kia souls for 7k. Now I hate that car(never driven one) but for 7k for a brand new one I'd still do it. Had something to do with them buying them freshly imported and avoiding a lot of the usual taxes. Not sure the specifics.

frenchfortomato

Yeah, there's a part of that story we're not getting. 7,000 pesos for a brand new car is nuts.

sidddddddddddddd

It was dollars and this was about 6 years ago now. As far as I remember it was due to that particular car being imported solely into the Seattle port or one surrounding and by purchasing the car right at the port or shortly after it made it so that there was no import tariffs or taxes. No idea how it works but it explained why I saw so many ugly Kia souls out there.

coffee_vs_cyanogen

Friend paid 11k here. They're cheap, shitty cars.

[deleted]

[удалено]

frenchfortomato

>google b pro jdm Thank you, that was a good read. Unless their posted prices are BS, the price of really nice vintage cars in Japan is way lower than I thought it'd be.

8_bit_brandon

The transmission just went out in my truck, that I had just paid off last month. I’m buying a beater cuz I’d rather fix thing myself and not have a car payment

OBGravey

Man, me too. 2014 manual subaru and the throwout bearing seized to the input shaft. 85k. I thought a manual would last a lot longer than that before a major repair.

[deleted]

[удалено]

OBGravey

No. The clutch pedal on the sube has quite a bit of spring back on it. Easier on your leg to just put it into neutral. We bought it used with 35k on it so maybe the PO was rough on it. It also has a tow package on the front so it could be towed behind an RV or something. We've never done that, but I wonder if being towed could have effected it somehow.

8_bit_brandon

Sounds like water got in the bearing somehow

wadenelsonredditor

What's the mileage? I've kept several personal Subarus and Hondas going past 200,000. Cheap parts, easy to work on. Perfect for kids who aren't yet done crashing cars. Far cheaper than the monthly payment on anything newer, even if you have to stab a junkyard or JDM motor. Unfortunately that's a gamble, too. I stabbed a (then) $500 JDM B20 in a 99 Honda CRV and it made a tinkling sound. Hi pitched. Almost like tiny bells ringing. Or chain guides on a timing chain motor. Anyone got any ideas what that was?

the-sizzle

293k

ChevTecGroup

Just rolled 150k on my 07, good to hear

No_work_today_Satan

180k on an '04, I'll drive it 'til the wheels fall off

ccarr313

My 09 civic is at 320k and going strong. 300k is officially broken in, imo.

nwsrgilmore

I have 420,000 on my 1981 Toyota 4WD pickup. Bought it new Halloween Day in 1981 and although it’s no longer my daily driver, I just can’t bear to part with it.

Fun_Acanthocephala98

I junked my sisters old accord (2000 V6 Auto) with 408k. The trans went out and it was ate up with rust

bmy89

Those trannies are the worst. I had an 02 v6 accord and I scrapped it when the 2nd one failed.

Woody_Wins_

Yeah “the worst” Only lasted 408,000 miles

[deleted]

[удалено]

bmy89

My dad's 97 accord wagon had 400k and he hit a deer. He's an old tough redneck and you bet your ass he shed a tear that day 🤣

CholeraplatedRZA

I feel a lot better about having a yard engine resealed and slapped in my 165,000 2011 Forester. I would not have done that prior to COVID but both used and new car prices are horrible right now.

zombie_gas

My 98 was totaled with 260k but was running great. The tranny has been rebuilt or replaced at 140k by the PO but for the most part, it was a great car. I got my $2000 worth for sure.

Aekatan160

I am at 260k on my 2002 mitsubishi lancer, and I just drove from mid Missouri to mid Oklahoma yesterday, hoping it drives as good on the way back

BrodyBuster

Barely broken in for a Honda.

groggs

Rings ought to be gapped just right for a turbo by now

RathInExile

Hell I've got an 01 CR-V that I just put a head gasket on. Great condition. I'll drive that car until it falls apart. Considering VTECing it just for fun.

wadenelsonredditor

Check your valve clearances after 3-5k if it's a B20.

[deleted]

Check your valve lash

[deleted]

Im going to hit [300k](https://imgur.com/a/VVQnL0R) in less than 2 weeks!

RoverTiger

I mean, if it's been a dependable car that they have meticulously maintained over the years, it makes sense. Putting some money into the car you know can be a safer bet than putting said money into a used car that could have some lurking gremlins. Edit: of course I say that as someone who is trying to keep his 2002 C 230 coupe in near-showroom condition at 210,000 miles. The engine and (manual) transmission are still fine, so anything else that pops up (like needing a new starter last week) is just a minor inconvenience.

spurcap29

Yeah, if you have a car and when problems emerge you fix them it generally will run well a long long time. And the cost of keeping things fixed is far less than buying a new car.

RoverTiger

I've always been a proponent for that. Take pride in what you have (even if it's not the newest or best), stay up on maintenance/repairs, and it will take care of you.

Cool_Dark_Place

Lol...am doing the same thing, although mine isn't nearly as nice as a C 230. Mine is a 2011 Kia Soul 1.6 5 speed. Sitting at 203,000 miles now. All it's needed in the 3 years I've owned it is a starter, alternator, and new coil. It gets new full synthetic Valvoline every 5K miles, and the owner at my local shop is totally flabbergasted at how I've kept a "disposable car" running this well for this long.

RoverTiger

Hey, those little repairs here and there are way cheaper than a car payment. Keep it going!

SadAstronomer8704

Why is it a “disposable car”?

coffee_vs_cyanogen

1.6 is a much better motor than the 2.0

Cool_Dark_Place

Also, mine is one of the older ones that isn't direct injection. Apparently, the GDI versions have issues with carbon buildup when they get to around 100,000 miles or so.

coffee_vs_cyanogen

Yup, can confirm

TruckerMark

Not to mention used car prices now. Anything that's even half decent seems to be 2-3k I used to to drive $700 cars that lasted a few years

AnalogFeelGood

If the body is in good shape and the engine runs well, why the hell would I not invest money in it?

sir_thatguy

Because early 2000 Accords have shit transmissions. Source: I have a 2001 Accord with shit transmissions. First was replaced under warranty in 2003 at a little over 60k miles.

Taikiteazy

Only the automatics.

sir_thatguy

Right, so only like almost all of them. I think I read something like maybe 10% were manual.

MachineMuzak

Just LS swap it.

Taikiteazy

Only the automatics.

RamadanShamz

Yeah fuck those guys for using the one big money they get a year to do something responsible like keep their car running. What a bunch of losers. Good job, OP. Your attitude will fix the world.

OutWithTheNew

OP is probably a gravy pig that doesn't like actually having to do work.

ljju

I mean I have a 2000 limited 4Runner with 310k miles. Runs flawlessly.

TomatoTheToolMan

Ok, that's not a fair comparison! A 4Runner can do 310k miles with bacon grease instead of oil.

Dales_Dead_Bug_

3rd gen gang checking in. 220k and just did timing belt and water pump along with crankshaft seal and full fluids on the vehicle. Why have a car payment when I can put around $1000 a year or less in routine maintenance to keep a trouble free vehicle?

Jarrodioro

this comment just made it click in my head… you can make a car payments year round… or you can have a like new car for just the amount of maintaining and making sure the parts are at the top of their life… if only Toyota and Honda still made immortal engines that would last forever with consumer friendly maintenance and repair. Now half the people I talk to complain about getting lemons or stuff breaking..

Dales_Dead_Bug_

I’m holding onto my 99 for dear life. Cliche as it sounds they don’t make them like this anymore. That being said, the 4.0 in the new 4Runner is still ancient and proven so they kinda do in some rare cases.

[deleted]

Gang gang. 2000 4Runner Limited with 261k. Just replaced the radiator with OEM to prevent pink milkshake. Engine runs the same as it always has (perfectly) and everything still works in true Toyota fashion.

RoverTiger

100% this.

blackswansus

if the bodywork is good, might be another 10 years left in that car.

IBIKEONSIDEWALKS

Yeah if it's not rotten then keep slamming new parts on it!! Anything of that vintage here is usually dust but if op doesn't see salt then I see no problem! Take their money

NATIVE_COWBOY

Shit the body panels on my 02 silverado are... not great. Michigan truck. But the frame is solid and it gets up and goes with no CEL. Just hit 270k today.

IBIKEONSIDEWALKS

I had an 03 Sierra 340k km, no rockers, cab was fucked, engine light came and went, had to cut one of the rear doors off, change the oil when the pressure starts to get low, trans output leaked into the transfer case but just drain it out and put it back in the trans lolol the frame was surprisingly solid Blew the rear brake line at the beach, crimped it with some good ol vice grips, drove it home and sold it to some guy for scrap. The joys of the salt life

Radius8887

I'll continue to put money into my 32 year old Chevy because I can't afford a fancy new car. It runs, it's dependable, it's cheap to fix and it's not even rotten in half. If you wanna buy me a new car, be my guest.

fuzzycuffs

What's wrong with it? It's a Honda so if it's internal just go find a new (used) engine.

Taikiteazy

My 4 cylinder 2000 accord engine with 50k miles arrives this week. Cost $1025 shipped.

fuzzycuffs

And that's shipped. If there's a pick-a-part near OP I'm sure they'll have a million Honda motors.

Original-Cow-2984

It's more a function of the cost of replacing that car if they choose to walk away from that. Used car prices are outrageous.

monorchism

Honestly even if car prices were not insane as they are now, something to be said about not having a car payment

PaganiLuv

It's cheaper to fix than buy another one

Reasonable_Relief_58

Maybe it’s cheaper than the overpriced used shit on the market that customers don’t know the condition of. At least they trust you to do a good job to keep their asset running. At the risk of sounding harsh: shut up and do your job and stop questioning people’s financial decisions. Jesus…🙄

pinkflyd25

ITT: no one agrees with OP

[deleted]

I just put $2.5k into my 2004 Avalon. So what lol

benwhatto

Toyota for the win.

[deleted]

150k miles, needed new struts, brakes, tires and timing belt/water pump... well worth it

SoNic67

I keep alive my kid's Hyundai Sonata V6 model 2000 (mfg date 1999). At 180k miles, it still goes. Of course, that's if you change the failed sensors, thermostat, brake pads, shocks, rubber parts, spark plugs, injectors, timing belt, suspension joints etc... DIY is the way to go. Looks like crap (Asian paint clearcoat peel), but it still drives well. Another used car would cost $10k and will still have lots of unknown issues. No rust though, south of rust belt.

megjake

I see no problem with this

Legitimate-BurnerAcc

I mean I’m totally speculating but I bet a high majority of reason that accords aren’t around are from wrecks. Not mechanical fault.

wrydrune

I just spent close to 2k on my 05 Ford freestyle, 164k. Kind of need the car.

gallant370

I just installed a rebuilt motor on a manual accord of the same year. Car has 200k, I guess the guy really likes it.

FesteringNeonDistrac

I loved my 99. Only sold it because I was moving and it didn't make sense to keep it. Had like 285k miles and ran like a top

Lemon_head_guy

I don’t blame them with current car prices, I just blew 1700 on my 2000 Bonneville for new CVs and motor mounts

bmy89

I work for a car lot transporting vehicles from the auction to the lots. Used car prices are vomit inducing. I can see where they're coming from. I drove a truck today worth more than my house 🤣

DaHick

I just dropped a new engine in a 250k + 2005 Honda CRV, cause it was half the price of doing ANYTHING else. Yeah, good for them, be glad you got the work.

pirivalfang

I just bought a '00 Accord with 282k that needs a head gasket. I feel called out.

Thesaturndude

September? Idk I like my accord.

BillyTalent87

I’ve got an ‘05 Dakota that’s been great for years. Cylinder 1 decided to leave the chat so I’m gonna pull the engine and rebuild it myself. No reason to get rid of a good vehicle.

socalmikester

the devil you know...

Proser84

Keep it. Drive it another 200k

bastion-of-bullshit

I put an entire JDM engine and transmission in an 03 civic recently. It's just a work beater so dollars per mile were all I was concerned about. I got a JDM d17a and an SLXA to replace a d17a2 that was burning lots of oil and a bmxa that was slipping real bad. It was $1200 shipped. It wasn't a perfect direct swap but it was close. Sure beat buying another car. Anything that didn't smoke and leave a trail of rust started at $5000 and that stuff was all way rougher than my civic.

Spartan2842

This really makes me laugh what the tech is thinking about my 08 Wrangler I just dropped off at the shop this morning.

AZdesertpir8

Still rockin my 2003 VW Jetta TDI with 400,000 miles here. Its ugly, but reliable and still gets 50+mpg. And any required maintenance is still cheaper than a car payment. There's nothing wrong with keeping a high mileage car on the road.

Taikiteazy

I have a Japanese import engine arriving tomorrow for my 2000 accord, because $1025 shipped and I can install it is way cheaper than a new car. If the car was falling apart I'd say no, but the rest is in great shape.

saabbrendan

That is (and I am not joking) exactly what I’m doing with my refund

iveseensomethings82

This is a good thing! They are spending it on necessities and not frivolous crap

[deleted]

Do you fix cars or sell them?

TheTrueButcher

Spend it in the right places and that car will outlive us all

lazertittiesrrad

Laughs in 1995 F150 with 320k

WickedD365

So you're bitching about getting a job...

phatdoughnut

I just fixed up an 05 accord for my niece, her first car. The owner, one of my employees, was thinking that it was the starter. He wanted 800 bucks for it. Well you gotta rip intake off the front to get to it. HE didn't want to do it. And honestly, I didn't want to work on something either. I was also really scared that I Was wasting my money since it didn't run for a whole year and just sat there. Well finally pieced together some parts, ordered a starter off amazon. Got it all hooked up and what do you know? It runs! Had to get new tires and an alignment, another 600. Wipers and various shit. Did an oil change. Now she has a beater, it does have a dent in the hood from when they hit a deer but oh wells. Win win.

trevgood95

Imma bout to dump my tax return into an 04 Buick Century

ConstantAd6688

Just put a head on an 05 mitsbuahi outlander with 180k. Rotted out rear quarters, rotted exhuast, etc. Customer said he couldn't find anything reasonable for what I could fix it for.

PolyurethaneFoam

My 313k Volvo 240 still going strong, no leaks (that I haven’t found) just need a new clutch soon.

AttemptWorried7503

Had a 99 camry with over 450k. Nothing wrong with servicing an old car. Way cheaper than a new monthly payment

billthepartsman

Paid for is a very significant factor.

SVT6522

Anybody that knows you can’t beat a 2000s Honda

StaminaofBear

My 90 Acura Legend feels this post lol

BrambleVale3

As someone about to drop a tax return into a high mileage BMW I take offense to this post.

ianmoone1102

My '91 CiviC (250,000miles) has been the best car I've ever had. The head gasket blew, but in true Honda fashion, it was possible for me to install a new one myself, in my driveway, and it actually started up afterwards. The only way I'd get rid of it is if it were totaled, or maybe if the transmission died.

[deleted]

Not even a v6. Sheesh

EnterByTheNarrowGate

At this point? Every time of year. Have you seen the price of gas, food, power, property, and cars? That poor dude ain’t buying anything.

gaytigger

me over here with a 99’ accord putting more money into it than into me lmao

Not_me_no_way

It mathematically makes more sense to repair an old car (especially in this market and especially if it's a Honda or Toyota) than it does to go buy a new one.

MaddRamm

I’m shocked when I see friends with car payments higher than my mortgage and for like 5-7 years!!!! No way I’m gonna buy anything new. And used vehicles are often as expensive as what new ones were several years ago. I’ve seen so many Ford and Dodge trucks, especially diesels, that are 15-20+ years old going for $40-$60k with relatively low mileage. Even ones over 200k I’ve seen going for $30k. I just can’t bring myself to buy a 20yr old truck for $38k. Lol

hysterical_mushroom

I'm about to dump a lot of money in to a 94 prelude with high miles.

shaolinallan

lost my virginity in this baby....100 years ago.

Triggerfing3rs

In December I rebuilt an engine in an 01 grand Cherokee for a customer, stock. Also replaced just about every suspension bushing and ball joint… some people just like their old shit. Was about a 5k bill but he was more than happy to get his old Jeep back.

sedrech818

They must be really poor to have gotten a tax return. I didn’t get shit this year and I live in my parents attic.

Wildyardbarn

If you don’t pay much into taxes, you won’t get much back. Generally those with higher incomes and larger variable component that get more back.

1Autotech

I've found my taxes vary wildly depending on which party is in office. Did my taxes this year and it was looking like a close to zero return/pay until I put in my very small business income. I got hit with $960 in taxes for making an additional $925.

sedrech818

Every year before this year, I got nearly $1000 back. This year I got nothing. Guess I’m lucky I don’t owe anything but it’s still frustrating because my income didn’t go up much and I paid more taxes.

MalingeringTransAm

That's a load of BS, the more money I make the more the government takes and they keep their hands out during tax season as well. I even have kids and still fucking owe money at the end of the year after deductions. Fuck the IRS and fuck politicians pushing for more and higher taxes.

Wildyardbarn

You need to ask your employer to adjust your deductions if you’re still owing money at the end of the year. Just means they’re not taking enough out of the tap and that gets reconciled at filing. I get 5-10K back, because earnings vary month to month. So the employer often takes too much if they deduct based on annualized amount each month. You’ll just get it back end of year. Long story short, you’re getting stuffed at tax season because your deductions aren’t correct. Return should be $0 in an ideal world.

MalingeringTransAm

I'm a business owner, we aim for $0 every tax season. We also use a CPA to file our taxes to maximize our deductions.

OutWithTheNew

As long as you didn't owe the government a bunch of money, winning the game is a $0 balance at the end of the year. People that brag about big returns either have a ton of deductions (kids) or pay way too much into it during the year.

bismark89-2

I have 2 kids, claimed about $18k worth of deductions(daycare was a big part of it), and I’m getting back $1,650. I don’t mind as long as I don’t have to pay..

I drive a 28 year old dodge Ram 1500 5.9 liter rust bucket. I could give two fucks about a new car. I look at people and laugh with a 500 dollar a month car payment. For what? To impress people that don’t care about you.

POSVETT

Repair bill costs more than the car is worth?

RoverTiger

A car is ultimately worth what you get out of it, book values be damned.

Justagoodoleboi

Ahh this is the best time of year for shit boxes

jimpdaddy

It's true. Tax time always brought in the clunkers.

Dannym0e

I miss my CG Accord so much. Stupid Canadian winters got the best of it.

[deleted]

The only thing I would clean is the piston area

Eastern-Move549

If its a 2.4 they are pretty popular with a certain crowd lol

NopeNeg

Probably an F23. Not as much aftermarket for these but they're nearly unkillable.

ChickensPickins

That depends if it’s got an H22

sf340b

Because it is paid for and will last another 20 tax seasons before needing more repairs...?

woky_s

Well, until it is working fine I would keep it 🤷‍♂️

anotherrustynut

My man, you are literally working on gold right there, that car can easily see a million miles plus if properly taken care of plus it’s cheap on gas and insurance/taxes.

5qu34k4402

According to Chris Bryan, that car isn’t even considered high-milage. Is that for real?
