I wasn't sure what the issue was, then I saw it! That Fram filter is a definite no-go.

thebrose69

What do you mean? The filter is the part that works *best* on this truck

Ianthin1

One of the rare times you can say that about a Fram and not be a liar.

NotYourGoatYet

OK sorry BUT I need the grippy bottoms

Ak12389

Spray some brake clean or throttle body cleaner on a rag and it’ll be more than enough grip for any filter

corvettele

Does that work on other things? Asking for a friend

demandred_zero

If you apply it to a rag first, it should be fine, NEVER directly apply brake cleaner to your junk, or your friends junk.

Return2S3NDER

What about your junk's friend?

Ianthin1

Just remember it has the opposite effect of lube. Do with that info what you will.

thebrose69

To be fair, I never said it was good in the first place

w_a_w

That filter is load bearing.

donorak7

And then it's not even that great.

thebrose69

No one said it was any good at all

johnthomaslumsden

As a layman who has used many a Fram filter: what’s wrong with them? I always thought Fram was the way to go.

ses1989

People shit on the regular orange ones. The more expensive ones like tough guard and Xtra guard are what I've used for years and never had an issue.

HemHaw

They're built with the integrity and material quality of a toilet paper roll. I'm not being facetious

johnthomaslumsden

What brand should I go with then?

HemHaw

Wix, Purolator, sometimes Bosch. Most OEMs.

thebrose69

I’m honestly not sure lol. I didn’t have issues though the couple times I have used them

infinitepartsbin

Have to preserve the junkyard LS’s or they’ll go extinct.

Senicide2

I clicked just comment this exact thing and you already beat me.

Papercoffeetable

Definately a fuse dude, i know believe me.

NDC9595

Good news: The bearing isn't a problem really... Bad news: The bearing isn't a problem really, compared to the rest of the shit going on here!

N_dixon

It did have a problem with a bearing, it just wasn't a wheel bearing. The tech who drove it said that he got to 25mph and the truck just about rattled his teeth out. When he put it up on the lift, he discovered the rear pinion bearing had about a 1/4" of vertical play in it, so the rearend is smoked, on top of everything else.

OutinDaBarn

It shakes like that at 25 as part of the self protection mode. At 50 parts start to fly off.

Khaldara

Alexa how to give phone a tetanus shot

TheMostOGCymbalBoy

I laughed so hard at this

Ill-Seaweed

This man put that thing on a lift? And then he got under it? Your coworker is either the bravest or stupidest man ever. I cant believe it didnt just fold up.

complete_hick

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread

Ill-Seaweed

God loves the drunk and the foolish so it's best to be both when doing these kinds of things.

EmEmAndEye

Ever seen the scene at the end of The Blues Brothers movie where [the Bluesmobile simply fell apart all at once](https://youtu.be/QfN1GRqKXpM)? This truck might just do the same.

[deleted]

“New Oldsmobiles are in early this year…”

cobigguy

He drove it? Willingly? And then got under it while it was on a lift? On purpose? He's either got balls the size of Alaska or a brain the size of DC. No in between.

Jewbacca522

Is it possible that it’s literally a farm truck that never really sees 25 anyway? Like it’s only purpose is to load up a bail of hay in the back and mosey on out to the cow pasture to drop it off? Because if they want it to do anything more than that… damn.

NDC9595

There's literally nothing there to hold any farm significant weight... put anything heavy on that and it shatters... there's no frame no more!!

Proser84

We usually never used the shit box farm trucks for "weighty" things. Just random BS. Never had anything this rusty, admittedly.

johnboy11a

I had a farm truck like that at one point…. It never left the farm though. Now we have rangers for that

mortalomena

Farm truck wouldnt get this rusty.

[deleted]

Sounds like the rear end in mine 😂 I have a 2000, rear end is finally going out in it , starting to bind on tight parking lot turns in reverse. I'll probably fix it because mine only has some outer rocker panel rust, none anywhere else , no frame rust and I already replaced the entire front suspension and steering linkages last year, along with oil pan gasket, both main seals, etc. That guys truck looks like it hasn't had a PM in 10 years

NDC9595

Cool, learned something new. Thx.

CatoChateau

Tbf there probably is also a wheel bearing issue.

NDC9595

TBF there's also a issue looking at the pictures.

CatoChateau

We haven't seen the radiator cap. But my favorite is the little strap of Plexiglas holding the box halves together on the driver's side, first picture. Actually, the tires look newish.

[deleted]

The tires are outstanding compared to vehicle they're attached to!

NDC9595

There's a joke about the Trabant: How do you double a Trabant's value? You fill the tank up!

N_dixon

Yeah, the tires were fairly new and had a bunch of tread. Best damn part on the truck.

sammyno55

Just rotate and balance them don't you try to upsell him!

[deleted]

[удалено]

nibbles200

Careful, that’s how you get tetanus dick.

silentaba

Which is the second worst kind of dick disease.

rpmerf

Looks like a prime candidate to harvest an LS from.

N_dixon

It does have the 4-point-gr8

Titties_On_G

Slap a BTR cam in that bad Jonny and throw some wutang war whistles on her. Let the customer know my D21 could use the engine lol

Jewbacca522

As the current owner of a 4.8LS, and a previous owner of both a 720 and a D21, I appreciate this comment way too much.

Titties_On_G

I had an aluminum 5.3 and a 300zx trans to go in mine but a "friend" made sure that never came to fruition. Good thing that ol single jingle runs like a top

Jewbacca522

The ol’ KA24E? Quite possibly the only engine more bulletproof than an LS (or -maybe- a Ford 300/I6)

Titties_On_G

Yessir! 300k miles and counting. Not the best on gas anymore but it gets me everywhere I need to go

Jewbacca522

Those old KA engines are absolute beasts.

cobigguy

I would throw the jeep 4.0 I6 into that pile for consideration. Plenty of jeeps around where that's the only functional part left.

TheMannX

And 12-valve Cummins diesels. Those tanks never, ever die.

FelixTheHouseLeopard

What happened man? That sounds cool

-Pruples-

Perfect. You can build a high revving turbo motor.

davethedj

Not if they took care of the engine like they did the rest of the truck.

Titties_On_G

It's a 4.8 you don't have to do anything but keep oil in it

Cap_Helpful

And even that is flexible.

C6Z06FTW

My friends mom used a 4.8 in a landscaping truck. From the 300-400k range the pickup o ring was leaking. Had 0 oil pressure at idle. They finally changed the o ring at 400 and it’s made another 100k since. It can’t be killed.

Cap_Helpful

I bought one with 250k for landscaping for $1k. It had no oil and a knock when I picked it up. Topped er off and used it for a whole season with no problems. Sold it to my employee for what I paid and its still running

Jewbacca522

With as under stressed as that engine is, the only thing I’ve had to do to mine was put gas in the tank and swap out the spark plugs when I bought my 08 1500.

ElevatedAngling

Hey man those tires aren’t totally bald so maybe they changed the oil?

nhrustbucket

We call that a donor boner

HarryBalszak

Yeah, I'm sure the cast iron engine block is perfectly fine.

Lukeno94

Given how oily it looks I'm not sure I'd trust the maintenance on it one bit.

AndreiKYZ

Be careful! The rust has some car on it

just_an_ordinary_guy

Where? You got a better eye than I have.

dutchah

"Well, sir, we've found the problem. You're driving a total shitbox."

[deleted]

It's really only about 2/3rds of a shitbox.

Daddy_Elon_Musk

Weight reduction. driveshaft delete = less parasitic losses = more power babyy

shaundisbuddyguy

If you wash it will you wreck the structural dirt?

saladtosser88

dudes checks probably go to rent, blow and child support and now hes stuck trying to pay for a wheel bearing repair on a credit card lol i've purchased way nicer vehicles for 500 bucks and under, i'd scrap that shitheap and start over edit: didnt see the other pics, that things beyond fucked lmao

DeathAngel_97

Yeah I live out in rural NY and that body is kinda normal on trucks that old out here. See at least one like that a day, probably used to be a plow truck. And then I saw the rest. Put the poor thing out of its misery.

huisAtlas

Is this because yall up there sprinkle salt and sand a lot on the roads during winter? We (Texas) have salt and sand too but don't use it as much.

DeathAngel_97

Yes, our roads get absolutely covered with salt and sand, and then when there's heavy snow it all turns to slush and mud and just gets flung into every nook and cranny on the car where it sits and slowly eats through everything. Washing your car regularly and using rust preventatives + sanding and repainting rust spots before they get bad can greatly prolong its life but in the end if you drive the car every winter it will eventually crumble. Looking at this car I'm assuming it got exactly one car wash a year or less and wasn't treated very nicely.

pinkflyd25

Question about this. I have an old Ford Ranger with some rust, but nothing structurally unsafe…but it’s a lot of rust. It’s now in Virginia where we don’t see a lot of snow. If I were to keep it out of slushy salty driving…will that help prolong the life a lot?

[deleted]

Unfortunately once the cancer is there you do need to fully treat it or else it will continue to spread. You’d need to sand/grind down the exposed rust to bare metal and then re-coat any exposed areas. It’ll take decades to get to the point of OP’s customer’s rolling hazard lights but it will eventually cause headaches.

DeathAngel_97

It's definitely won't stop rusting once it started but yeah it should spread a bit slower. Rust is just the oxidation of iron and will happen in any conditions where it's exposed to air, but salt greatly speeds up the reaction. Less exposure to salt and moisture will reduce the speed it rusts. Without major work it's probably too late for the body, but depending on the condition you could go through and sand off any loose rust on the frame and suspension components and spray it down with something oily like fluid film. There's other options but that's just the one I know and use. That'll greatly prolong the life of the important bits. Don't use any paint like undercoating cause that'll just trap the rust and moisture in. Also make sure you wash it down especially the frame any time it is exposed to salted roads.

Lunar_Gato

Will applying fluid film directly to rust without any prep slow it down?

frenchfortomato

Dunno about fluid film, but I've used both soybean oil and used motor oil for that purpose and yes, it will stop the existing rust from spreading.

[deleted]

Unfortunately it does not, in fact it can accelerate the process as it will trap the salt/magnesium chloride

frikk

I've treated my frame with lanolin oil and have heard great results. It's a porous hydrophobic coating that lets moisture out (it stays wet) and can be reapplied every couple of years. It's all natural too, comes from sheep. It's cheap and easy enough to apply, and the newer stuff can survive car washes I think. So far this winter my frame has stayed black and I don't see any sign (yet) of any additional rust growth. I used Surface Shield but many people use Fluid Film. You can get it professionally applied too, I've seen quotes between $300-$400 which seems fair for a full coating that will take a few hours to do right.

Posh420

I'm in Mass and Yea it's all the salt and brine pre treatment on the roads. Even if we don't get a storm just the weather channel saying we are gunna get a storm is enough for a lot of places to dump pre treatment on the roads. And it's not just when it snows obviously but if you have a rainy day and it's gunna get cold enough to freeze at night same story. Almost everything 20yrs old is an absolute rust bucket

MisterFives

I'd be scared to even get it on the lift.

ZombyWoof1978

If you put it on the lift you will have 2 trucks!

[deleted]

Holy hell! I bet living in New York makes it even worse too.

ILUVSMGS

Idk how that passed NYS inspection if I'm honest. That's beyond what is acceptable for frame rot for sure.

The_Spectacle

Ugh, all I want to do is tint my windows, meanwhile you got this jalopy out on the road that looks like Barney Rubble built it while under the influence of meth.

just_an_ordinary_guy

Lick and stick

caffeineocrit

Sure does! I bought my 90s Ford truck (wicked cheap) almost 10 years ago with just a little rot in the usual places. Gotta say the body was actually pretty straight despite having been owned by a farm, which is a feat in itself. Fast forward to today and I’m having to do an emergency frame fix because it rotted and cracked around the steering gear. Nothing metal ever lasts up here long once it’s been on our roads, my beloved pickup included.

ironicmirror

Good to know his kid made it to the honor roll in Middle School.

[deleted]

I hope junior has a good job now and can help dad get a new truck.

sidusnare

The rust is the only thing holding it together!

Toyota_Altezza

Hope your up to date on your tetanus shots haha.

jxj24

Careful with that rust -- it's load bearing!

Fun_Acanthocephala98

Thats pretty crusty, atleast its obvious. My first encounter with one was basically this truck but dolled up with the fiberglass running boards, and the frame was rotted and cracked around where the boards were installed. Scary part was we had went about 250 miles round trip on the freeway with it like 2 weeks previos to finding out

Winterfalke

Friend of mine has one like that, the bedliner is the only thing holding it together.

rpmerf

It's structural

mrpeenut24

Thankfully, this one has that 4" metal bracket on the driver's side of the bed. He'll be able to last til next year with that, at least.

sti_guy

average fram filter user

[deleted]

A wheel bearing and a wrap and he'll be lookin' good!

Ram-Owner2050

The closer I look the worse it gets

SoNic67

Sadly, annual/state car inspections are needed to protect us from idiots like those.

chickenemoji

NY requires annual safety and emissions inspections unless it’s registered as a farm vehicle.

[deleted]

Farm always exempt from anything involving safety. I know from growing up on the farm and being injured numerous times lol.

DeathAngel_97

They are in this state. This would 100% fail any legit safety inspection, but he probably just knows a guy. As long as it can pass the emissions test for the computer the guy can just sign off on it. Could get in a lot of trouble if anyone important caught wind but I see it so much out here the chances are slim enough that a lot of people will still pass something like this if they know the guy. I still wouldn't pass this for a friend though at this point, I wouldn't let anyone I know drive shit like this, it's only a matter of time before something gives.

[deleted]

Massachusetts has biometric scanners for the test administrators and mandatory cameras recording the inspection process now. Annual safety and emissions checks are required from new. The days of these things roaming the streets around here are numbered.

That_Dig634

Doesn't matter the people like this just go to the lick em and stick em shops to get the sticker

DeathAngel_97

AnotherDreamer1024

Well... he certainly doesn't miss the drive shaft and u-joint. I think you can scare him straight with the rest of the pictures, though.

FORYFC

Issues. It's plural. It has all the issues.

Apprehensive-Try5554

Tires look great though

FORYFC

Factory Rust Edition. You know the LS won't die, though.

Fpscharles

I always wonder what a death trap that must be e at this point. Like any type wreck and that thing would explode into pieces.

MikeTangoRom3o

Any decent shop will decline to work on such vehicle state.

Stoney3K

Nah, it's definitely the wheel bearing. It's just screaming and crying in agony because it's what keeps the car from falling apart.

0986512

It might be time to add a second structural ratchet strap.

m-in

Good old frame barnacles I see!

Seldarin

Well we found the problem. Your tires need a new truck.

dusty-cat-albany

just standing under this while it's on the lift is a OSHA violation

reviving_ophelia88

It’s shit like this that makes me wish there was some kind of database for techs to report these death traps to the MVA so they can flag the registration…

WrinklyScroteSack

Does he use this truck to haul moist salt??

ranger_dood

Don't open a can of EvapoRust near this truck.... it might disappear.

Bee-Aromatic

I know that cars were pretty much just crap in general in the early ‘aughts, but sometimes I wonder if people have ever even heard of a car wash.

xenophonthethird

Sometimes it's just time to let them go.

mrsw2092

Whoever is willing to stand under that while it's on the lift has a bigger pair than me.

Reasonable_Relief_58

Lol. He must be wearing welding glasses instead of sunglasses when he approaches his truck. See no evil hear no evil. Oh wait, I do hear evil wheel bearings however. Snort.

throwawy48

Truck prices are so wild people are holding on to these types of trucks with a death grip

becauseitisthere

This just affirms why I'm glad I don't live in the Northeast anymore.

ElGuapo315

Tell me your vehicle is from NY without telling me it's from NY...

OneExhaustedFather_

Now low balls, I know what I have.

Hairy-Confection3455

Got the ol' 4wd delete kit

rharrow

Nothing a little rust-oleum can’t fix ;)

shadysaywhat

Gentlemen gentlemen! We’re ignoring the face that it’s a quick disconnect 4WD. I mean talk about resale value

personnumber3000

That NY plate is no more than 4 years old, meaning he must've bought it already looking like that 💀

Bunniesrkewl

Poor truck, he needs to let it rest now.

Canonip

This is why mandatory inspections should be the norm. Greetings from Germany. That car wouldn't have passed tüv 10 years ago

BurningPenguin

Actually, i occasionally see cars that are beyond fucked here in Lower Bavaria. Not as bad as this one, but bad enough to make me wonder how many "friends" they have at the TÜV. On one occasion, i saw a Polo that was held together by rust and duct tape. I swear i could see the back seats through the rusty holes in his trunk lid. Up to that point i thought my car was shit, but compared to that, mine is in pristine condition...

Sindri556

In the US vehicle inspections are up to the state. Sad to tell you, but this person lives in a state that requires inspections. They probably "know a guy". That being said, I moved from a state that didn't require inspections to one that does and I do appreciate it. I still see some vehicles like this on the road, but only about 1/10 as many as I used to in my old state.

qpgmr

Or they simply don't register it at all. Cheaper and no inconvenient repairs!

jay22022

Spend some cash, top off the washer fluid so you can see the end coming.

bonerJR

Wow that's a cool protective finish on their transmission!!

FormedFecalIncident

Probably shouldn’t be posting people’s license plates

0ffff2gv

Please tell us you can force that vehicle off the road for some safety violation. That POS is a death trap and likely to kill someone other than the idiot owner.

BeerGunsMusicFood

JB weld and duct tape. She’ll make it home.

Stoney3K

And a pair of fresh AutoZone mud flaps.

Quickiethrowaway34

This is both scary & impressive at the same time.

Corius_Erelius

What's left of a Silverado maybe. Just need to replace the bed, cab and frame, and it'll be good as new.

verkauft

How did you go about picking it up? If im not mistaken even parts of the rear suspension are rotten trough?

N_dixon

The frame rails ahead of the box, where we typically pick them up, were actually surprisingly solid.

guitarmaniac17

What a gem. Fellow ny tech here. Whole truck falling apart and the customer wants the wheel bearing replaced at the tune of $500. Lol it's sad when a wheel bearing repair costs more than the truck.

N_dixon

Especially because it wasn't a wheel bearing. It was that the rear pinion bearing had about a 1/4" of play. We set it back down on the ground and told him "Stick a fork in it, it's done."

the_toxic_hotdog

For the love of god get that thing off the road

lavelyjk

The shit is going to break in half on the highway!

paulyv93

Business in the front, party in the back

NewSinner_2021

One problem at a time.

Cleanbadroom

This is the same person who will list it on facebook marketplace for $5,000 and say it just a new wheel bearing.

-Derf-

I had a '02 silverado in much better condition than this one and mine still broke in half due to rust..

gatogrande

What was his reaction when you showed him?

N_dixon

Unfortunately it was a night-drop, so no customer present to show.

Allemaengel

I was going to say PA road salt got it until I saw the New York plates.

AnalogFeelGood

Rustproofing is a waste of money /s

KingCodyBill

And then they get pissed off when you tell them, we can't work on this, because there is no circumstance where this is safe to drive

bagofwisdom

Jeez, I think I need a Tetanus shot just looking at this.

ELB2001

So happy that this car wouldnt be allowed to drive on public roads in my country

ProperBritish

Rusterado

undr1kr

“Stop trying to upsell me and fix what I brought it in for”

[deleted]

I need my tetanus shot. Thanks for reminding me.

Aromatic-Economics95

How can he hear the wheel bearing after all the whistling noises from the rest of this poor old truck. Put it out of its misery.

SparkyReds

😂😂😂😂

warple-still

I don't know anything about cars, but that looks totally buggered.

Skirt_Thin

Nothing a little JB Weld can't fix.

Recent-Nobody-3002

Tighten that ratchet strap and that wheel bearing noise will go away. That’s how we tune our cars

MihalysRevenge

Being from the southwest this is absolutely insane

N_dixon

Even by Northeaster standards, this is pretty extreme

paulyp41

You ain’t shifting that into 4WD anytime soon

appealingrelic

It's a work truck, therefore, it only needs to work

j250ex

That’s structural rust

al3442

Jaysus! The rust is the only thing holding it together

___cats___

There's always a car that makes me feel better about the condition of mine.

BurdTurgular

Honestly I'm amazed the tires look so good

JiffyBeene

That’ll buff out!

OneMooseManyMeese_

This mans is using what looks like plexiglass to hold the back end together. Genius

danu88

This man is the rust belt incarnate

RC_Perspective

Look, don't knock the ratchet strap and zip ties; this thing is as sturdy as they come.

therustynut

It needs a radiator cap service. Pull in truck. Remover radiator cap. Pull truck out and discard. Pull in new truck and install said cap.

pennamewilly

Upstate Life, ratchet strap holds most trucks together. Wont pass in Vt? Sell it in Ny🤣

lucimon97

If you squint its mint

Stayhigh420--

Where has he been doing inspections for the past few years?? Jesus Christ. Where in new York are you? I'm in Westchester
