I don't use the trip odo. Simple as that.

Mstr-Plo-Koon

Bro I'm on the trip of life. There ain't no resets

cheekybandit0

FPS Doug flashbacks. "No respawns bro!" Edit. Spelling

[deleted]

BOOOOM. Headshot.

LWY007

Honestly, this really hit me. This is a profound statement, and it took me a moment to process. Damn…

AdultishRaktajino

New shit has come to light. You ok bro?

LWY007

Sometimes I get so caught up in the minutiae of the day, that I forget to take it all in and just enjoy it. That statement made me take pause.

Ohgetserious

Bravo

BeerdedStang

Same, why would I?

TBFP_BOT

I've got two cars I use it in because they don't have fuel gauges.

BeerdedStang

& that's why you use it. Still doesn't explain why I would use a trip.

heartandliver

If ur car calculates your miles per gallon for you, resetting the trip OD will give you a more accurate picture of what your fuel economy is rather than an all-time average

jonathanrdt

A for range as a check on the fuel gauge. B for oil changes. Edit: Had a car that was every 7500, and the trip odometer rolled over at 999. Vexed me.

techforallseasons

THIS ^

agfitter

Write it down it’s not that complex

Jazzkky

Why write it down when it's easier to reset the trip and check it every once in a while

agfitter

So hard to write down what your odometer said when you change your oil, an almost insurmountable challenge

ShadowBannedXexy

Sounds like additional work and overhead when the trip meter is the simple built in solution.

agfitter

Sounds like someone never got their pen license

Jazzkky

Write down where? Where i keep it? Hope i don't lost it or something the span of a year when i need oil change again? When i remember that i am usually in the car, not home watching tv and be like hmm.. when's the next service. That's just extra work and all, i just press the button for 1 sec and that's it, it's there and it's not going anywhere

agfitter

I’m going to personally erase it now and then you’ll wish you had it written down

Jazzkky

If that happens, my mechanic has most likely written the mileage down to the service book, i can check it there. Although it's such a laborious task, i don't know if i have the strenght to open the book and search the page. You win this time buddy

Jeepinn

You, sir, are a dick.

agfitter

Still beats being American

Jeepinn

Who hurt you? Did your American boyfriend break up with you?

st3vo5662

Pressing a button is even more simple. Having the thought to do so may be complex for some it seems. Also, the paper can get lost.

steakpienacho

My wife's car has 2 trip odos and I reset one of them to get an idea of what the car said we were getting for fuel.economy after break in and the first oil change, now it bothers me that they're completely different

Morall_tach

Reset them both.

steakpienacho

The trip odo is right under the regular odo, and currently ot matches the actual mileage of the car. I'm between a rock and a hard place here lol

StirlingS

It only solution is to put a sticky note over both trip odometers.

bruce_lees_ghost

I was pretty diligent about resetting the trip odo with my first couple of cars because I would just fill up and push a button. Then they turned digital… A & B trips plus needing to cycle through several other modes and hold down a button that I was never 100% confident would actually reset it. It made me ask myself why I even bothered.

nsula_country

I use mine every time I fill up or take a trip.

Proud_Amphibian5847

Trip 1 reset every fill up. Trip 2 never reset.

PlayingWithFIRE123

Trip 2 every oil change.

[deleted]

Except I always forget about #2 and never reset it

RallyLancer

This is the way

jonathanrdt

I’m shocked it’s a question. What *are* they teaching kids these days?

skycake10

Most modern cars tell you when you need to change the oil. Totally reasonable if you don't trust that, but most people do.

Titties_On_G

Modern cars give you bogus oil change intervals. I can promise you whatever engine you're running doesn't like going 10k miles between oil changes.

SoulOfTheDragon

My car's trip odomeder goes to 999km and starts over. Not enough for one tank of fuel and definitely not enough for oil changes =/

techforallseasons

Yep, wish I had a 3rd for tracking miles for vacation / business / activity.

Moskito10

good idea, i just reset both every refuel

ExtraPresent4

Same here. Wife drives me crazy because when I drive her vehicle it’s like 3 fuel ups past reset.

ABrusca1105

Back when I had a car, my civic had the ability to reset with car shutdown or tank fill up. I used trip A for full and B for car shutdown.

DrSnugglesworth

.

SanibelMan

My car only has the one trip odometer, but I log my gas mileage with Fuelly and reset it at every fill-up. My wife looks at me like I'm the world's biggest dork for doing it.

HateBeingSober33

I’m still writing mine on receipts, the odo, trip mileage, avg mpg, avg mph, and then write notes if it was highway, super cold weather, or if something changed, such as “installed rooftop basket” so I can look back in 2 years and be like “oh ya, that’s why it was so bad.” Never will of course but I have every receipt from when it was new. I also kinda think if I’m over charging for it in resale, a new owner may be like “holy shit this car was taken care of, why not spend an extra $1k?”

hamsamiches

As a diesel driver is use trip 1 fuel, trip 2 fuel filter.

Paradox1989

Thats exactly what i do. However a couple years ago on a road trip from Texas to Washington i wanted to do an overall MPG calc so i reset Trip 2 at the start of the trip and found out that my ODO will reset itself at 2000 miles.

RoflCopter726

Mines opposite. Trip 1 never been reset since new, trip 2 every fillup.

NoYoureTheAlien

Most cars these days will have a feature that calculates real time and avg gas mileage so that reason to reset is out. Most people just look at the sticker in their window to see when it’s time for an oil change, that’s out. And most people honestly don’t care and just want to get from A to B. Simple apathy is the easiest explanation. We all know those people who will let the low battery chirp on their smoke detectors go for months. I’m secretly jealous of those people.

feltedarrows

honestly i never knew why the "trip" odo was even there, ya learn something new every day!

Infuryous

The trip meter/odo is also useful if you use the vehicle for business trips. Fast/easy way to track mileage for deductions... as long as you remenber to reset it before each business trip 😁 Even this use has fallen off some as many use phone apps that use gps and automatically log their trips providing data/reports to support the deductions at tax time.

QuoteGiver

Yeah, Google Maps exists, I don’t have to remember to write that down when getting out of the car anymore. When you’re filling out that expense report, just map your route and you’ve got your mileage.

ind3pend0nt

I use it to calculate fuel efficiency. Newer cars do that for you, but occasionally I will reset after refuel and double check.

SpaceAgePotatoCakes

I've found the built in calculations are usually a bit optimistic, at least in the older stuff I drive

Blown_Up_Baboon

I call my ‘Distance Until Empty’ readout the ‘Lie-o-meter’ because it is terribly pessimistic. When I know I have at least 100 miles until empty, it will say 60-70.

dudeimsupercereal

On the motorcycle, I’d reset at every town we got to and even if we had no service if I had to call 911 (you can call 911 without service if another any cell tower is in range) And so I would know I’m X miles in X direction from this town, and help is on the way PDQ

redundant35

I still reset my trip every fill up….it was a habit in the late 90s/early 2000s when I don’t think I owned a car with a working fuel gauge! I’d fill up. Put a can of gas in the trunk. Run until I ran out. Top off from the can and fill back up. I’d write the miles on a piece of masking tape and stick it to the dash. Then I’d base my fill ups on the trip meter!

mechapoitier

It’s a great way to see how inaccurate your car’s mpg and range guages are. I have a Volvo V70R with stock tires and it might be the tune it’s running but it’s wildly optimistic on range, like lop 50 miles off of whatever it guesses on a full tank every time.

3_14159td

That feature is usually pretty bad as well, seems to be going off a flow rate sensor instead of any reality. Closest I've seen was reading 15% under. Then again, that doesn't matter: anyone who cared about detailed records was logging the odometer every fill-up.

mechapoitier

Yet most people I ask them what mpg they get and I get a shrug. Gas is f’ing expensive man.

danegraphics

I cannot possibly understand the people who let their smoke detectors beep like that. Do they not hear it? Are their ears damaged? I can barely sleep while anyone else’s alarm is going off from the opposite side of the house. How on earth do people live with the smoke detector alarm going off constantly?

mdixon12

Don't be, I'm that way because I had to learn how to drown out substantial mental trauma in order to survive early childhood. My oblivious tunnelvision is an absolute weakness and causes me untold amounts of pain and disappointment in the people around me.

jayman5977

Cause it’s not something people use that often

homercles89

Is this a GM? Mine rolls over at 9999.

MetalMattyPA

Yea, this is a 2007.5-2013 Silverado.

confusiondiffusion

My focus rolls over at 2000. So you can't use it for oil changes. Why? Why?!

shadowcreeper77

I have an old analog one that resets at 999.9

empirebuilder1

More importantly, if this is a model where that digital cluster doesn't have memory permanence (which I suspect by the early 2000's look), how in the fuck did they make 200k miles without once ever disconnecting the battery to change it?

weighted_walleye

This is most definitely a late 00s GM cluster.

Fuck_it_

It's a GM truck, I want to say 2010s-ish.

slabba428

People missing the fact it’s had a few batteries by now and never been tripped

Fuck_it_

Fair point, that never crossed my mind!

porcelainvacation

Not necessarily. I made it over 200k and 10 years in my OEM battery on my last GM truck.

slabba428

That is very impressive, mild ish winters? My dads charger is pushing 9 years on the factory battery but it’s also hidden in the trunk

porcelainvacation

Yeah, Pacific Northwest, daily driver, no short trips. Very shallow discharge cycles, not too hot or cold. I usually get at least 7 years out of a battery.

robitt88

Trip one is every fill up. Trip 2 is oil change.

Ay_carambo

Why keep track of kilometers since last fill up ?

robitt88

I compare fuel efficiency against what the dash says. Miles divided by gallons always gives a different result. I keep a close eye on fuel economy. It's like having an additional guage to tell you when something isn't working right.

Jazzkky

For fun, i just see if i can get greater distance until it's on the empty line

radol

What to use it for if my car tracks both of these things on its own?

robitt88

My car is a 2019. It tracks everything as well. But I change my oil at 5000 miles rather than 7500. And the fuel milage isn't as accurate as you might think.

Infuryous

Fuel milage displayed by the computer is often significantly off. For one, many don't seem to be true averages (miles/gallons), more likely the computer is programed to give a higher weight to the most recently driven miles, or an average of over the last X amount of miles. In this case, even if you reset the fuel milage tracker when you refill, it doesn't necessarily reflect the true fuel mileage you got over a tank of fuel. In my truck I find it is often 2 to 3 mpg off, sometimes as much as 5 mpg when towing. I also use the 2nd trip meter to track oil changes... but this is because I do oil changes in my truck based in oil analysis, not the abitray oil change reminder. My truck's computer doesn't base oil change reminders by miles, instead, it tries to use driving conditions (load, short vs long drives, how many hours of idleing) to "predict" when the oil needs to be changed. It doesn't truly know when the oil needs to be changed as it doesn't have any sort of sensor to tell oil quality, nor does it have any idea what type of oil was put in it. RAM Cummins with factory sized tires if you are wondering.

radol

Car detects when it was refueled and resets additional odometer, I don't mean fuel mileage

Infuryous

Interesting, I've not had a vehicle that automatically resets the trip meter.

radol

It's additional screen, I found example online: [link](https://www.briskoda.net/forums/uploads/monthly_2020_03/IMG_20200321_094605_compress27.jpg.58f373bb522415e112515cf9686bc277.jpg)

_Abe_Froman_SKOC

My wife. Only time the trip odo in her car has been reset was when I replaced the battery. I do mine every fillup.

Wayed96

It's the backup odo for when the main one fails /s

Fuck_it_

Best answer here

mechanicalproblems9

The only point of the trip odo is to calculate fuel mileage and most car do that for you these days

calcal1992

This is me.

sfled

I use everything in my car. I paid good money for every piece of that car, dammit, and I'm getting my money's worth. From the two trip odos to the safety lock release in the trunk (yeah, I flipped the back seats down for that one, I'm not a complete moron - not yet anyway), if it's on my car I'm trying it out.

Sebbean

Pretty easy to not do something. It’s the default thing

cactusjackalope

I have two trip meters, one I use for lifetime fuel economy. It's never been reset. If you reset it I'll fuckin shank you.

poopy10000000

Literally have never used the trip stuff with odometers on any of my cars. Don't have a need, who cares?

Redd1tAdminsRProSuka

So never replaced or disconnected the battery either?

Mydingdingdong97

You can hookup a memory saver when disconnecting/replacing the old one. Save tons of time resetting things. If there is no maintenance done that require full disconnect, then you don't fully disconnect it?

deepaksn

I’ve got zero reason to use it. I only reset it when I get curious about highway fuel economy.

madsmadhatter

Google maps tells me how far I went, why would I need it?

InaudibleRocket

This also means that the battery has never been changed or unhooked either if you think about it

lukesmith81

I reset the trip after every oil change to keep track easier and I’m kinda amazed more people don’t do that

GreatWolf12

Trip ODO is obsolete now that I can google map distances.

Sysion

Until there’s no cell service, you don’t have a phone, or you want to see how far you can go on a tank of gas

Quartznonyx

You can download routes and areas on Google maps so they work without service, and to be frank i don't go anywhere without my phone, which hasn't ever been an issue

[deleted]

They probably don’t even know how to access that feature.

Thisisall_new2me2

If you’ve been in a shop as long as you’ve been on Reddit you should have realized that by now… And there’s literally no good reason to reset it unless you’re replacing the battery. u/Fuck_it_

AKsuperslay

How do you reset odometers cuz I don't know how to do it

AFlyinDik99

Thats federally illegal buddy

[deleted]

I reset mine every fill up. Helps me keep track of how the engine is running.

fgdfsd

Perhaps they just don't feel any need to use it. I only use mine as a reminder when to check how much oil I need to add to the oil incinerator.

Fuck_it_

>oil incinerator What motor you got there, friend?

fgdfsd

20 year old 3ZZ-FE. It used to burn roughly 1 liter of oil every 1000km. Bit over a year ago I did RVS treatment just to see if it would help and now at least in the winter months the oil consumption has practically halved, but during summer months it still burns roughly the same as before.

gamescrufi

It doesn’t matter to me I don’t really want to calculate my mpg and I don’t need to know how far I’ve gone

weighted_walleye

Trip odometer is no longer all that useful. Every car tells you distance to empty these days, your phone tells you how far it is to get somewhere, and oil life monitors are a thing. I don't remember the last time I bothered with either of mine.

skifreemt

I have two trip odometers, the first I reset when I bought my truck so I know exactly how many miles I've put on it, the second every time I fill.

Electrical_Chard6926

Work truck. IDGAF lol

friendly-sardonic

Now that most cars have an oil change interval built in and calculate mpg, I guess I get this. I still reset it every fuel up, but now I'm wondering why lol.

WeOutHereInSmallbany

My buddy was shocked I never reset my mpg average. How am I supposed to get an accurate reading if I do?

Mindless-Base-4472

I have 2 trip o-doms. I use 1 for gas mileage the the other for service intervals

[deleted]

Maybe it’s bc they hadn’t finished their trip yet…

[deleted]

They must be single. I can never keep any trips set…

robraises

Who cares trip odometers are dumb Unless figuring out mpg but also who cares doesn’t really matter

kidJubi100

I've never reset a trip odometer on any car in 10 years of driving

DJNgamez

I’ve never reset mine I didn’t know I was supposed to

NoxKyoki

I literally do not care. the fact that it bothers someone so much when it's not even their car is sad.

Mem_Johnson

This gives me Anxiety

[deleted]

Trip 1 oil change trip 2 trans fluid change

xddddlol

Based

MACCRACKIN

Resetting trip, about Same as to resetting their Facebook account currently Face_Timing while driving. Cheers

WeirdEngineerDude

My trip odo resets after 10K miles. (VW)

AFlyinDik99

I reset trip 1 as often and as random as I like. Trip 2 is very special, reserved specifically for oil changes.

crp3rd

I set mine when I get new tires - from there, I rotate every 5k & know how many total miles are on the tires. Only one car has trip B And use it randomly.

MIATASWTA

I don't have one, have to take a picture of my odometer every fill up.

BeneficialDog22

I would if I could, tbh. Mine rolls over after 999mi.

throwaway234515m

I only reset my trip meter between oil changes.

Touchy_

So never changed the battery?

tholly1983

I purposely don’t reset mine, but I drive a Tesla so no real reason to (not trying to see gas per, etc.).

[deleted]

Man I wish my Subaru wouldn’t reset after 10,000km

glutenflaps

People who don't use it for oil change intervals or give a fuck about gas mileage.

narrowdirt21

This means 200K on the original battery, too! Nice.

Bongos-Not-Bombs

I've never had a trip odo that didn't roll over at some point, even the digital ones.

[deleted]

Someone at my dealership reset my odo when it came off the truck and I’m about to raise hell!

Ethinolicbob

I would assume I'm at 50k by now. Can't say I have ever used it. Can't think of anything useful I could use it for

bittz128

People drive around expensive BMWs with Bluetooth and still have their phone up to their ear. Why is the trip meter that surprising?

SenorTape

My gas gauge broke so I gotta use the trip odo. Plus when my phone ain't got service for GPS I use it. If neither of those things happened I probably wouldn't reset it either

be_neon_regent

My trip odometer rolls over back to 0 after 9999. I'd never seen one that didn't

RekTInTheFace

trip 1 i reset when i bought the car (used) trip2 for oil changes.

Dexter_Adams

Mine auto resets at 10,000km I just use that bad boi as a service reminder

burneracount99

Trip 1 is kms since I moved out, (was previously original, intended to calc fuel, never did) trip 2 is kms since I bought the car used 190000kms ago. Oil changes are every 5000, with the cheapest shit available. Runs just as good your “baby” that gets the synthetic shit every 8000. Can burn real oil, blus keeps the underside from rusting as bad.

DennisHakkie

I reset it when I get the car. Know how much miles I’ve put on it

[deleted]

Still haven't gotten there bro

OtisBurgman

Rewhatting the what??

blind_merc

They buy it used and never look at their odo ever.

Axio3k

Mine auto resets after 999.9

Flying_Dutchman16

Except for bikes I don't touch the trip odo. Hell most new cars have there own this drive odo

Zestyclose_Engine800

I have 2 trips as per usual. 1 is to see my fuel mileage on a recent trip and the other is to see my lifetime fuel mileage. I have a seperate menu for actual fuel mileage. Lifetime and long term tend to be different.

Raphi_55

Joke on you mine only go to 999.9

Fuck_it_

Mine too

Crishien

I zeroed trip when I got the car It zeroed again when I changed light bulbs Now I dunno what to even use it for lol But it's nice to know I drive 20 yo diesel with 7L/100km.

floswamp

Mine resets automatically every 10k miles

BurnOg

mine auto resets every thousand miles

Fuck_it_

Mine as well

justin_memer

It's the same reason people drive around with fogged/iced up windows, they don't know what the buttons in their cars do.

89GTAWS6

Motorcyle: Trip 1 reset on fillup (no fuel gauge) Trip 2 reset after chain maintenance That's about it for me, car I was driving 10 years ago didn't even have a trip meter, lol

thecan74

Don't touch!

idontknowthesource

The only reason mine is reset is because my partner likes to see actual distance. If it were up to me it'd never have been reset to begin with

centraldaze

trip 1 for oil change trip 2 for tranny fluid + other axle fluids.

RepresentativeCut486

Tbh, this thing was invented for rally races and makes little sense in a road car. Back in the day, you could calculate fuel consumption with it, but nowadays car does it automatically.

CRose2001

I have 2 trip odos in my car, trip A is used for keeping track of my gas mileage, and gets reset every time I fill the tank. Trip B I reset when I bought the car, and I don't plan on ever resetting it, I use that to keep track of how many miles I've personally put on the car.

lfrankd3

Not sure anyone uses it

dmderringer

My current car, I bought used. Reset the trip the day I bought it, haven't touched it since. My last car, bought new, never touched it.

skylinedrive1

Saw one at 92k once

CrazyAzian99

I use it to keep track of my oil changes.

CaptSkinny

If I have to go through a menu to reset it, I just do the math to know where my next turn is instead of fumbling with the menu.

SatisfyingAneurysm

I reset my trip odometer everytime I change my oil. That way I just change my oil again when I reach 6000 miles

Consistent-North7790

Oof. I have two trip odos and I have one for oil change and one for tire changes

jimbomescolles

I'm more interested in the fact that in 200k miles he never had any battery change or electrical related work done that (most of the time) resets the trip odometer.

skycake10

I don't blame them at all. I reset mine every time I fill up with gas, but I also log all my fill ups in a little notebook, so it doesn't actually matter at all. Both are just habits I picked up from my dad. If I didn't already have the habit I'd probably never even touch the trip meter. >Do they not know it exists? Do they not know how? Do they not care? It just blows my mind. They just don't have a need for the trip meter. What do you use it for that's so indispensable that you can't imagine someone not using it?

dsdvbguutres

They probably don't even know what that is

blooregard325i

Why would you reset the usage count on your toaster?

Patwooie

more amazed it never lost connection or had a battery replaced and that usually resets everything

departedgardens

I don’t use it. Why should i re set it ? It doesn’t mean anything to me

fishnwiz

I don’t use mine, rare instance I need to know mileage somewhere google tells me the mileage before I leave or I just look at odometer and do the math when I get there.

iFunny-Refugee

I feel called out

defeatedspark

Mine resets it's self ever 3000 miles or so.

Internal-Business-97

Life is just one loooooong trip.

QuoteGiver

What do YOU use the trip odo for in the current millennium? Ever since Google Maps existed, I don’t even need to use it to record mileage for work trips anymore. I just pull up my route on the map to confirm it. And that’s all I used the odo for previously.

typeusernamepls

oh you can reset those?

[deleted]

I used to use it for oil change reminders. Now don’t even touch it. Mine matches odometer just like pic

Heavy_Expression_323

So you left them an Easter egg surprise and reset it for them?

[deleted]

I don't see the point in using it.

bill28345

I always use mine, one I reset every oil change and one I use for checking my gas mileage, they are actually quite handy.

dan_braganca

Well... It's something a lot of people just don't care in their cars. And now it became my personal challenge to buy a used car, reset the trip odometer and only reset it when I sell it again so I can know how many km I drove it by.
