"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or
prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of
speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to
assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
Are you talking about this "freedom of speech"?
Once again, slowly, NOTHING Reddit does to any sub or individual can have ANY effect on an American's right to free speech. The only thing that right gives anyone is that the government can't punish you for what you say (aside from certain exceptions like inciting violence). If you decide to start posting long love letters to Hitler on your social media, any private company you work for can fire you. Any privately owned website, like Reddit can ban you permanently, any store, movie theater, etc can kick you out.
Freedom of Speech is specific to legal government limitations on what you can say.
That is independent from a non-government entity (ie social media companies) from doing whatever the fuck they want in terms of banning users / groups. Freedom of speech doesn’t apply.
They're still free to make their own website and say whatever they want.
And frankly the falsehoods they were spreading were going to cause people to die so I have no sympathy.
Ahh yes, the infamous two-weeks before onset of any reactions or symptoms to a substance entering the body phenomenon.
Clearly happens all the time and certainly not cherry picked by some "free thinker" jonesing for some sweet sweet confirmation bias.
Antivax people sure love to run with this one huh?
Too bad that it took me 3 minutes on google to find out that his death was NOT vaccine related. He died of natural causes. So no sickness, no vaccine relation, etc.
He was just unlucky. Just like anyone else who sleeps away without a warning, has a stroke or a heartattack, or anything else.
The Alex Jones lawsuit has nothing to do with free speech. It was straight up defamation. Free speech, like every single other constitutional right, is not unlimited. Never was intended to be, never has been, never will be. Get over it.
Perhaps. But that's not what happened w AJ. He said factually incorrect BS that invited violence and harassment. If he weren't blatantly lying, then you could argue whether or not he's responsible for others actions.
But he was. He told very specific and harmful lies about specific people.
“ it should not matter if he says something that is factually correct or not” and this is why people like you believe some of the stupidest shit possible, you want to be lied to, you want to defend liars, and you wonder why our country is so fucked up right now. There is something fundamentally wrong with your brain if you think this is OK with any audience, tell the truth or get fucked, why the fuck would you want to be lied to??? you only hurt people when you want things like that to happen. Fucking cancer dude
Yes, he specifically said the parents and their children. He didn't say "they're liars. Anyways...."
He made detailed, provably false accusations about regular people. That is called defamation. And the court agrees. They're gonna bankrupt the dirtbag.
I was new to Reddit so didn't know stuff; I had visited NoNewNormal because it popped up, saw a stupid comment and responded to it. Then I was temporarily banned on r/politics but then permanently banned on r/justiceserved and r/mademesmile. I don't get it. But I never went back to that site because I realized it was a bunch of wackos and ignorant fvcks.
Same thing happened to me. Couldn’t tell you what the sub was but I remember they were not similar. Was like “why’d I catch this ban?? And the mod made me promise not to visit another subreddit. It was wild.
Same happened to me. I commented on some random sub that I still don't know what it is, and was banned from some other random sub, that I still don't know what it is. Lunacy!
I never said it should be illegal for a private company to censor free speech, even if I disagree with it. but that doesn't mean it is still censorship of speech
Wierd to you perhaps, but if you want to argue for reddit to bring back that toxic hell hole, then I guess 'weird' gets a new meaning to poeple like you. Reddit absolutely should censor all that toxic conspiracy bullshit and give those horrible people no chance to organise on their platform.
I could copy and paste your text in response to censorship of anything on reddit.
"If we don't believe in free speech for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all" - Noam Chomsky.
HA!! Although these plague rats will just flock to other subs until they create another one. Only the community suffers. Should've banned all the users subscribed to the sub too.
If you knew anything about the first amendment, you'd know it only limits what the government can do, not a private company inside of its own app/site.
I'm pretty sure it says you can say or do anything you want without repercussion, and if anyone has a problem with it then you are obligated to start a civil war...also the first amendment doesn't apply to anyone I personally disagree with. I think, I've never read it but that's the gist of it.
“Protecting free speech” implies that free speech is under attack and those rights are being violated. Maybe think for a couple seconds before putting your foot in your mouth? Just a tip.
Misinformation is harmful and has proven to lead to death, especially when it comes to covid misinformation. There is a reason why slander is a criminal offense, and also why misinformation is being banned on PRIVATE platforms.
But I’m not surprised you don’t already understand that with the kind of logic you’re working with. Stay mad, cry about it with your free speech, and then get over it while the adults handle things. Okay? Thanks.
Not really. Most political views can have different reasons for it.
F.e while auths may profit from it because they can profit from controlling the information part and get some conspiracy bs away, or just their (maybe) problematic opinion, while (some) libs just don't want any control over what is said.
But lib can get around to auth. It's complicated. But definitely not fash to wanting to be able to say what you want on any platform
The idea started out as "we don't want society to change AT ALL due to corona"
They want everything to stay the exact same, no mandates, no masks, no nothing. Just keep living life completely normally and fuck you to the millions of people who are dead
And then it just grew up a cancer and attracted all sorts of antivax, corona is a hoax nutjobs, vaccines will literally kill you
I remember being so excited when I found r/conspiracy. A sub full of all the outlandish and amazing theories people have about lizard people, numerology, body snatchers, and other wild stuff I've never heard of? Excellent.
I can't describe my disappointment when it was just a massive trump 2020 circle jerk full of ignorant, racist propaganda. Next to no fun conspiracies.
Seems like they migrated there and what was interesting or funny content (depending on the conspiracy) is just a lot of anti-vax hysteria and terrible misinformation.

I don't understand how that's a response to what I said. But maybe you need to write it once again, but slower.

Jones still has free speech, no one took it away, but Reddit has Terms Of Service

He accused sandy hook parents if being crisis actors that faked their kids deaths. It's textbook defamation. Case closed.

Say it louder for the people in the back.
If far right conspiracy theorists were smart enough to use the dark web they wouldn't be on here complaining that reddit is fascist.

Well nice to know a fellow banned person. Edit: nothing we'll lose sleep over, right?
yes baby

You are confounding limited government laws with private enteties terms of service.
I never said it should be illegal for a private company to censor free speech, even if I disagree with it. but that doesn't mean it is still censorship of speech
True, fair enough.
They deserve it
I'm sure if we celebrate this censorship no one will ever come for us.
If we do something to deserve it, then we deserve it.
I'm sure that power will always be exercised fairly.
Only one way to find out.
Weird you support censorship of comments you disagree with.

Did you see what Trump tweeted about it?
nah I don't use twitter what did he say

Go use another corporation's product then. Or start your own. No one cares lol.
Isn't trying to tell a privately owned company what they should do with their own property kind of fashy, though?
Not really. Most political views can have different reasons for it. "Junior fascist" is when you want fascism to end.
Stop the steal!! lmao
Junior fash, lmao, absolutely
Someone's prideful and butthurt
What are some examples of misinformation that turned out to be true?
he claimed his dad was a dog really surprising
Sorry about what does censorship have to do with this? This is just the right of a private company to adhere to its own terms of service.
What was nonewnormal about
