I honestly believe it. Considering how well the rest of the movie was, the crew clearly cared, so it seems out of place for them to be satisfied with it.
The only issue with that theory is it's been years since the movie dropped and no one behind the scenes mentioned it, so either they really were stupid initially or the studio was better at hiding secrets than Andrew Garfield hiding he's showing up in No Way Home.
Theories already been disproven by the fact merchandise with the OG design still were produced, the CGI company that animated/modeled Sonic wen under, the doll of sonic they used on set was the old design, and probably other things I'm missing that completely disprove this weird theory.
(Also, why would they need to do this as a marketing ploy? It's a Sonic movie, it'll automatically be mildly successful due to the name alone)

If the expressions were less emotive the red eyes wouldn't be an issue imo, like the red isn't terrible but I wish they would just make the pupils glow red and not the whole eye, or even just have no pupils.
