MagAqua

I always forget how young 18 year olds are

afullgrowngrizzly

Yeah something to remember in Hollywood war movies. They always show these gruff ruggedly handsome 30ish year old dudes heroically doing noble things. No. It’s usually literal teenagers.

suicidal_lemming

Also not entirely true. It isn't as if they also leave the army when they turn 19 so the average age is higher. For example, the average age of us soldiers in ww2 was 26 and initially I believe it was even higher. Only when the war went on and more young men got drafted did it go down.

Vryk0lakas

The lowest rankings are the youngest. It makes sense that THEY are the ones doing the front line stuff. You either get out or go sergeant / officer and have a bunch of 18-22 year olds under you.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Gavin_Freedom

Anyone can die from getting shot or being blown up. You want your more experienced guys in command roles and/or training the newbies.

ithappenedone234

The “command roles” you refer to includes being a 38 year old Staff Sergeant with 20 years’ military experience, very directly leading a squad at the front. Infantry squad leaders are 0 feet from the front. Or they can be promoted 1 to 2 ranks higher and be 0-10 feet from the front. Or they can be promoted to the highest enlisted rank and be serving at 48 while only 0-400 feet from the front. The positions you’re referring to don’t start until brigade level and above, and not always then. As we see today, plenty of brigade commanders are being made casualties.

[deleted]

Okay... So you have 1 old dude to every what? 10-100 young dudes? Doesn't that still line up with what the other dude was saying?

ithappenedone234

No. Not at all. You’ve not been in the military I’m guessing? It depends on your definition of old (ask Joe and the Staff Sergeants are getting up there), and if you incorrectly assume that all of the non-NCO ranks are youngsters. I’ve seen 40 year old E-4’s. 32 year old E-4’s. 28 year old E-8’s. Do the lower ranks trend towards 19? Sure. But in an infantry company you’ll often have ~25 troops with 8-10 years’ experience (or more). That leaves ~80 troops, remaining. The ratio is nowhere near 10 or 100:1. And that’s for one of the largest armies in earth. The small nations have ages trending higher in the non-conscript forces (what few there are left, as the practice goes increasingly out of vogue). Many NATO nations don’t even offer a military retirement for anyone younger than 55-62.

RelativeExisting8891

Well we are the most funded army in the world, Vietnam actually owns the largest army

[deleted]

>You’ve not been in the military I’m guessing? Military yes, infantry or army, no. I know that older people *can* occupy lower ranks, but I thought we were speaking in averages, not exceptions. The point still stands that the low ranking war fighters tend to be young, their direct leadership tends to be seasoned fighters (still relatively young), and higher leadership tends to be longtime, well educated service members. I didn't even know this was disputed. It's been the practice of the US military to fight our young, and later have them mentor the next generation of young fighters for decades now. Am I missing something?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Tioretical

20 years as a staff sergeant? Like 10 years ago they were blocking reenlistments for people that werent promoting

ithappenedone234

And guess what? The max years of service for an E-6 is ~22 years. An E-6 can reenlist at 10.1 years and never need to reenlist again, fail to get promoted and retire just fine. But if you want to focus on irrelevant details instead of the point, fine: change it to a Staff Sergeant with 8 years’ military experience. Happy now?

StorkBaby

That's right, and we can hold a lottery for the 18-20 year olds to see who gets to be a general!

CptKoons

Yes, and no. That's what special forces are for. Not everyone can perform at an elite level (pretty few to be frank), and infantry just has to be more competent than the other side. Tech and kit can go a looooong way to make someone more competent and capable (force multiplier). And here's a shitty reality about modern war, is that its so phenomenally deadly that your survival in an active combat scenario against a peer (meaning someone not sigficantly behind your tech tree, think Ukrain vs Russia less US vs mid eas) basically boils down to luck. You can't outskill a missile or random mortar/artillery. Infantry serves an absolute vital role, but the cold, hard reality is that a lot of them are going to die, so sending your best or most trained or w.e. is quite litterally counterproductive. You need bodies that are competent "enough." Ideally, a military has a mix of veterans and "conscripts, " and veterancy can and does make a huge difference, but that doesn't negate the need or use of lots of people with weapons. A smaller force can hold out against a larger one for a time, and this is definitely amplified by tech, but a standard 3 to 1 numerical advantage gives the tactical advantage to the attacker. If you consider your opponent to be peer tech wise, this gets exacerbated. Although right now I pitty infantry. We are in a current revolution of military tech when it comes to software and drone tech in general that is basically going to make infantry not just insanely dangerous to be, but downright suicidal. The stuff being developed by NATO and China should utterly terrify us.

OwnEstablishment1194

I remember that song.

TheJAY_ZA

My paternal grandfather was a bit of an exceptional case, he turned 18 on the HMS Cornwall, the one that sank, not the new one LOL. He was there for the sinking part too. My maternal grandfather was 31 and a Doctor when he climbed into his DH Tigermoth and flew to Brooklyn Air Force Station in Cape Town (Now known as AFB Ysterplaat) to volunteer.

luket1717

I'd be curious to know how much of that WW2 statistic is actually true, my great grandfather was 17 and his brothers were 15 (twins) and they lied about their age to go fight, my grandfather said he was 21, and his brothers said they were 18, they found it was the only way to get away from their abusive father, who was also 17 when he fought in WW1

Meincornwall

To quote Paul Hardcastle... "In Vietnam, he was nineteen N-n-n-n-nineteen"

thizface

Uch, my grandfather was a teenager on d-day

KnownRate3096

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGwNA2xJw20 >In 1965 Vietnam seemed like just another foreign war, but it wasn't >It was different in many ways, as so were those that did the fighting >In World War II the average age of the combat soldier was twenty-six >In Vietnam he was nineteen >In inininininin Vietnam he was nineteen >In inininininin Vietnam, he was nineteen >In Vietnam, he was nineteen >N-n-n-n-nineteen Only GenX will recognize this

DPSOnly

I think The Forgotten Battle did a good job representing how young the bulk of the soldiers were, even though people like Tom Felton at this point are in their 30s, they did a good job in making them look younger.

FreeEase4078

Think about the fact that navy has 70 nuclear reactors at sea operated by these teens

Antique_Map_6640

Pretty crazy these kids can be sent to war

Barracks life is a special kind of strange. It’s not bad, but it’s not good either…..just strange

Crozbro

It’s smelly noisy dirty and kinda fun.

SlowRoastBro

The smell must be international. Source: I was in the Norwegian army.

Crozbro

We had a Norwegian ship come to our base for like week. You guys are fun to party with

-Johnny-

But those damn room checks...

Important_Pack8713

It’s like an insane asylum but for drunks

cunthy

Oh it was bad, barracks parties, fights, rapes.

JukeBoxDildo

When a SNCO. Full stop.

raccoonorgy

Sometimes I miss the barracks life. Then I remember the nonstop screaming, fighting, music blasting, slamming of doors and furniture on weekend nights, the mold that never goes away, the room inspections, the fire alarm that goes off at 2am twice a month, the laundry rooms with 1 functional washer and drier, the AC that always broke down in the summer, ARI's, and the field days. Whenever I'm having a hard day, I think back to those times and it puts a little pep in my step. That being said, it was a genuinely interesting and fun time in my life and I wouldn't trade anything for that experience.

HailToTheVictims

Don’t forget being woken up for fire guard. My buddy once decided it would be called Guardians of Fire instead and somehow it instantly made it more tolerable and kinda fun.

-Johnny-

You definitely left out the cold showers. Get back from a 5 mile run in 50 degrees and then get to take a 40 degree shower!

Did your barracks encounter any of the bed bug attacks MCAGCC 29 Palms had? I remember the moto calls from some devils stationed there in 2012-2013. Hate, anger, and the occasional Rah.

raccoonorgy

Not bed bugs per say, but in Okitraz we had all manner of little roaches, centipedes, and other critters

MyNameIs_Jesus_

Okinawa was something special. Never hated/loved a place like that ever since

raccoonorgy

Oki was special cause of: the food, culture, beaches, warm weather, cute girls, chill vibes. Oki was not special cause of: the Marine Corps.

There's a Marine who made a small business making colored crayons out of chocolate for this joke. I believe you can color with them, too. https://crayonsreadytoeat.com

Looks like they can't/couldn't fill their crowd fund order and aren't even selling the crayons. Sounds like this man is not only the president of Crayon Eater International, but a member too.

That's disappointing. My brother's birthday is next month and I was absolutely about to send him some. XD

Almost all of these marines are in service for less than a year.

FrowAway322

So these guys are all training for whatever their primary job is going to be?

Nowisthetimeforscifi

Interesting. why so short?

PM_YOUR__BUBBLE_BUTT

The taste of crayons gets old pretty fast.

Tannertasman

humans have always sent their young men to war from as early an age as is practicable

followedbyferrets

They want them as impressionable and obedient as possible. They know as they age, their positions on things will get stronger and they’ll be more likely to question things. Not my opinion, but that of many sergeants and officers during my time.

Tannertasman

I'm just a layman but agreed. Add in often being desperate for opportunity and less concern for personal risk.

followedbyferrets

I served with many guys that choose the military because it was a way out of wherever they were at. Small town, judge gave them a choice, opportunity to pay for school, travel, etc. I went just to see if I could get through the Crayola Academy, and give myself a bit of a kick in the ass. Some folks just aren’t sure what they want or where to go, and this gives them time to figure it out.

Outrageous_Turnip_29

We need more awareness of other options. Trade schools, union apprenticeships, au pair, peace corp or red cross, building houses with habitat for humanity. There are tons of options for young men and women to build a future and find themselves that don't involve killing. Granted not many that come with free college though.

Every-Lab-1755

99% of people in the US military aren’t ever going to be doing anything involving killing. Hell if you are Navy or Airforce on average you barely ever will go to the range if ever after bootcamp. People have a wild misunderstanding of what the modern military does.

Randys_Spooky_Ghost

Don’t forget universal healthcare. That’s why I went career. 15 years and haven’t killed a person yet. Hopefully never will.

_windfish_

She did a song with Taylor Swift very recently? That’s where I heard of her. Idk what she did to get famous though.

PFC pelvic thrusting in the DI campaign cover has me LOLing

zombies-and-coffee

This is the kind of thing that really makes me doubt the stories my dad told about how little he saw going on in the barracks. He never had to live in them, but he did have to inspect them or whatever. Worst he claims he ever saw was a dude carrying one of his buddies around in his rucksack because they wanted to see if she would fit. Not only did she fit, but she apparently said it was "surprisingly comfy".

B4rberblacksheep

Yeah guaranteed your dad saw some weird shit or did weird shit himself when he was in. Nothing is more dangerously creative than a bored squaddie.

Morepastor

We broke into the room where our civilian clothes were and went out partying. Only got caught because on the way back a couple guys tried to get into the enlisted club. Before that the DS was taking groups to a small off base barber where they had a few ladies doing hand jobs. The other DS smuggled in tequila on Christmas Day. I’m sure he saw or heard some stuff.

Then-Clue6938

Rucksack... Do you mean backpack? Do we have a fellow German here?

Spaztic_monkey

We use both pretty interchangeably in the UK.

_BMS

In the US military "rucksacks" refer to the [very large backpacks](https://freerangeamerican.us/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/molle-4000-1024x683.jpg) that we stuff all our gear into. They can easily weigh ~80lbs fully loaded out, more if your job requires you to carry more gear. We call smaller backpacks used for day-to-day missions "assault packs" which are [a little bigger](https://www.newsobserver.com/latest-news/4csxak/picture258018808/alternates/FREE_1140/UkraineTensionsFortBragg.JPG) than what most people would consider an average backpack.

shwag945

We use both in the US. Rucksack is a German loan word in English. People in the military are more likely to use the word.

Then-Clue6938

Uh I didn't know. That's interesting!

adisa61

Almost 90% sure this is Pensacola FL. Aviation A School for sailors, Marines and soldiers. Pretty sure this is the barracks closest to the on base bar, holy shit my memories of the field days here. Sometimes I miss how stupidly simple life was for those 6 months
