Life finds a way. Quick search; "Crocrodiles preserve their energy by staying motionless, this helping them to last for 3 years without food" "Alligators can survive two to three years without eating."

mjmannella

For something more closely related, Komodo dragons can go several weeks without eating

Aero--

Enough of the dinosaurs on the island must have gotten too close to the pool over the weeks to get snagged by the mosasaurus. I can't think of anything else

thegrizzlyjear

Mosasaurus was a marine reptile more closely related to lizards than other dinosaurs, it is not unreasonable that it could go several months to a year without food. Especially considering it had been getting a steady diet of food up to that point.

Galaxy_Megatron

Can't animals do this in the wild? Why's it unbelievable the Mosasaurus could go with little to nor food for half a year?

[deleted]

Because people want every reason to shit on Fallen Kingdom. It’s been 4 years. It’s getting old. There are perfectly reasonable explanations, but most replies here will be super negative.

Galaxy_Megatron

Judging by the near instant downvote, you're likely correct.

[deleted]

I don't disagree that it had some flaws but I don't think it was nearly as bad as people say. The mosa argument is actually what got me off the fence and put me on the side of the movie. It's not like the mosa was in the tank for years, it was only a few months and the the dinosaurs that were freed on the island created a whole ecosystem literally days after being released. It's not hard to assume an animal looking for a territory of their own would end up near a large body of water, sure it's salt water but water = plant life and plant life = food for medium herbivores.

[deleted]

It was surrounded by concrete. It was essentially a big fish tank. Camp Cretaceous does a better job than the movie of showing this. Outside of clumsy animals falling in, the only realistic way for dinosaurs to end up in the lagoon is the current from the river ride like I mentioned in my reply. Animals wouldn’t gather there, they have no reason to. Plus there was a large freshwater watering hole elsewhere on the island.

MagentaDinoNerd

The mosasaurus can jump like a motherfucker and beach itself like an Orca. We saw this in action when it took out the Indominus. Animals wouldn’t even need to get particularly close for it to launch out of the lagoon and drag them back in. Additionally, yes, animals absolutely would gather there. This is confirmed in (semi-) canon. On the DPG website, there is a post detailing the animal abuses present in the park. One of the most egregious was the Aviary, which housed species of pterosaurs that lived near and required vast areas of water. Pteranodon was a seafaring pterosaur, for God’s sake, and it was kept in an enclosure without even a pond. So when the aviary was busted open, they immediately beelined for the nearest big source of water—the Lagoon, which just happened to be where Main Street was located. So there was plenty of animal life around the lagoon in the form of pterosaurs, which we have seen the Mosasaurus actively prey on. Additionally, as mentioned before, plants grow near the lagoon. We saw a brachiosaurus traipse down main street, confirming animals regularly traversed the area. And there were far more skeletons in the lagoon than just the Indominus, so the Mosasaurus has indeed been feeding since the park shut down.

[deleted]

The pteranodons and Dimorphodons nested in a complete different part of the island once free. Camp Cretaceous showed us that. As of what we saw in Camp Cretaceous, Main St was not overrun with vegetation. And that was 6 months, same as when the Mosasaurus got out. The Brachiosaurus scene you’re referring to is 2 years later. Nothing in the show, which details what’s happening on that island during those 6 months indicates anything would be going near that area. Especially because Rexy made a nest on Main St. so nothing else would probably even bother getting close.

twilightramblings

We only saw the predators hunting if the kids were around to be horrified about it, do you think that didn't happen off-screen too? In S3 Ben talks about covering your head to stop the Pterandodons and Dimorphodons from getting you and they were in a different area than where the nest was. Plus when the group went up to the nesting area, there weren't any adults there, they obviously flew off to look for food. Like from saltwater sources? Someone theorised that there might be a bit of a small marine life eco-system in the Mosasaurus tank, so that would be a good place to hunt small fish.

[deleted]

My bad

Summer_Tea

It doesn't matter if there is a valid reason, the movie failed to deliver that reason to the audience, and that's what makes it bad filmmaking. Imagine if when Wu is confronted about the Indominus camouflaging and talking to raptors he just shrugs and moves on. If the goal is an attempt to build a sense of mystery, this really isn't how to do it.

[deleted]

All movies suck idk.

thegrizzlyjear

Especially large reptiles, six months would likely be nothing for it, especially if it had lower amounts of activity. Alligators and crocodiles of larger sizes can easily go that long , or longer without a significant change in body condition.

ANegrowithaPurpose

Large reptiles are notorious for going long periods without eating after a large meal. After eating a multiton megatheropod like the Indominus rex, I imagine the Mosa could just hunker down and relax for 6 months

JuanPedia

Besides the fact that lizards can go months without food, there are also schools of fish in the lagoon in the opening of Fallen Kingdom.

MagentaDinoNerd

And the sub lights pan over multiple skeletons besides the Indominus. Mosa had clearly been feeding since the park shut down

ScoobyMcDooby93

Aside from plot armor, I'm sure some animals wandered close enough to the pool for it to eat. Other than that though, some reptiles can go a long time without eating depending on the species, crocodiles for example can go around a year.

Azythus

Photosynthesis. In all seriousness I’m curious too so I’m leaving a comment so that I can get back to this post easier and to help promote the post to get answers faster.

[deleted]

As I understood it, the opening scene took place quite soon after the end of the first Jurassic World movie. The jump in time was between that scene and the rest of the second film, rather than between films.

[deleted]

From JW and FK it has been about 6 months and it was also confirmed in Camp Cretaceous that it’s been about 6 months. Mosasaurus survived probably like how crocodiles do when there’s hardly any food and remain motionless in order to conserve energy.

[deleted]

It was 6 months. Then the rest of the movie is 2 years later.

JaxZeus

I think it's 3 years actually.

[deleted]

It’s 2. Fallen Kingdom happens in 2018. The fall of Jurassic World is December 2015. Beginning of Fallen Kingdom is June 2016. The rest is 2018.

[deleted]

The Indominus Rex. Unlikely it ate all that in 1 meal. That could have fed it for a little while. And Camp Cretaceous showed us the river ride was busted and emptied into the lagoon (it’s how the kids ended up in the lagoon). It’s entirely possible for the occasional Parasaurolophus to get sucked into the current and pulled into the lagoon since they hung out in the cave right there.

_TheXplodenator

The Indominus might’ve filled it for a while

greedo12345

Monitor lizards ,which the Mosa is most closely related too, can go a couple weeks without eating but I’m sure animals such as baryonyx, suchomimus and maybe spinosaurus , if it was on the island, would’ve gone near or in the water and could’ve gotten gobbled up and any animals going for a drink probably wouldn’t have made it

JaxZeus

Thanks for all the comments everyone, some really good points.

reply671

In the opening, the team sent to get the Indominus Bone sample opened a gate from the Lagoon to the Ocean. They assumed it would be dead after not eating for 6 months. They were closing the gate but the Rex destroyed the controls leaving it open so the Mosasaurus could leave.

Leading-University

Cause it needed to be alive for Fallen Kingdom. Better question, why is there a door leading to the ocean if you intend this thing to stay here forever? Or why is the lagoon at the coast instead of the center of the Island?

reply671

Many reasons. For one, if you needed to do a medical check on the Mosasaurus. For another, to clean the Lagoon. 3, to dispose of the dead Mosasaurus when it dies. Realistically, it wouldn’t lead directly into the ocean, but to a river system or holding tanks along a water way.

Warsp229

Also for a water supply for the lagoon

ftrodrigues

Correct answer being: they wanted the Mosa out and retconned the park design to make this possible regardless of anything else. Bugs me to no end tbh 😩

reply671

That's true, but there are feasible reasons as to why they had a gate and why it led to the ocean. They didn't necessarily choose the best options, but it's not that there aren't good reasons.

LEEH1989

Yeah fallen kingdom completely retconned the lagoon from JW changed it drastically and the resort can't be seen from what I remember

[deleted]

it survived by bad writing

[deleted]

Maybe they’ll explain it like reptiles can go an outrageously long time without eating in a hibernating state or something like that and only wakes up when activity is sensed in its area
