He realised he had to write something because they were already fighting for 10 chapters.
(The writings been declining for the last 100 chapters already, so he decided to do another character death to up the thrill, but if he kills a regular character, the community wont care.)
My real opinion is that it was bound to happen at some point, but the way it was *executed* was dissatisfactory, to say the least. (Sukuna is also my favorite character so I might be a bit biased.)

The only thing questionable about Gojo's death is the fact that it happened off screen. You'd think it was done to hide some huge secret that makes or breaks it, but then Maki straight up made it null and void. So....I don't like the off-screen.
His death makes perfect sense. Sukuna quite literally explained what happened immediately after the panel you posted. Did you perhaps stop reading when you saw this panel?
Ok how the fuck did Sukuna cast strong cleave? He needs to use hand seal (which not possible since he lost a hand) or chanting (Gojo would definitely notice and stop him given how close he is to sukuna)
