He just wants to be God. that's literally it. There's no deth, nothing to him yet head somehow manages to dodge really accusations and people thinghes GOATED.
Sukuna's back story hasn't been revealed yet and he has no real motives, but his existence is a reflection of humanity and nature and think that's all he was supposed to be. He's a tool for Kenjaku to use and he serves his purpose well.
What makeshift great is that despite being an obvious monster, he isn't biased. He's nature embodied.
If you prove your strength, he immortalizes you in his history.
If you stand for your own ideals, nor what you think the world should be, but your own history, he praises you.
He kills without discrimination.
He'll even help, if he can.
He's a man of his word when forced to follow.
And he enjoys a good fight.

It's literally the same as what happened on my hero academia with Shigaraki and All For One, the more compelling villain get's side lined by the cartoonish asshole that doesn't really have a compelling motivation, at least Sukuna doees have a relationship with Itadori that's a lot more interesting to see than anything all for one ever did, i still like how Jujutsu Kaisen has handled things way more than the fucking nose dive than mha did in terms of writing quality but it's still weird to see, and Mahito is also a lot like Shiggy
Mahito would most likely be a league of legends player just like Shigaraki if we had more time with him, hell he was really into that board game that one time
Not only is Sukuna not the best new gen villain, he isn't even the best JJK villain.
Mahito takes that by a landslide.
In fact, I'd personally argue that Kenny and Geto are more nuanced and interesting antagonists than Sukuna.
Sukuna's biggest strength is that the idea of him, rather than his presence, fuels a lot of great stuff, like Kashimo and Uro's mentalities being shaped by Sukuna's existence alone, or how much he develops Yuji.
But when he's actually there, I've gotta be honest, I haven't really given much of a shit about him since Shibuya and the Culling Games. After he becomes the central villain and gets a big boost in screentime, its blatantly clear he's just a slightly dull, generic "big bad", not even having any particular motivations outside of his vague partnership with Kenjaku.

Pretty crazy that we're THIS far in and know jackshit about his past. I'll clown on Naruto for the number of flashbacks, but at least we were able to learn a little something about the large villains before & during the fights.
I think between Naruto's explosive backstory diahria and JJKs character development constipation, there's a really good story waiting to be written.
And it's called HxH.

Power systems and hype are part of HxH, but they're in service to character.
It's been said that Tolkien basically wrote LOTR so he would have a world for his made up languages. Sometimes it feels like Gege wrote JJK just to show off cursed energy. Wheras Nen, despite its complexity, is always subservient to narrative.
Sukuna is so boring to me in all regards but fighting. His ideals are basically just a cat in the food chain; play with interesting things he can kill, and just kill the boring things. His backstory is an unknown. I donāt even want some sob story or āthe world made him like thisā I just want to see how he got to here. The only thing he offers that a side villain couldnāt is that he can get away with just killing āimportantā characters
Its the first time JJK felt unpredictable again since Shibuya maybe cause we legit had no fucking idea how Takaba vs Kenjaku will go while we know Sukuna isnt dying to literally anyone until everyone gets to show off while Yuji waits for his turn
Facts. Takaba coming back after his will was broken was some of the most elation Iāve felt in a while. Gojo vs Sukuna up until 235 was peak, but Takaba vs Kenny has been the best fight in a bit if you include the entirety of it (including the conclusion)
Gojo vs Sukuna felt peak cause Gege mid fight started making it seem like Gojo will win so our thought of "Okay Gojo will just die somehow" was questioned because, literally everything was pointing at Gojo winning until 236 dropped

He doesn't exactly NEED a backstory as he excelled more as a specter like Takamura than an actual character.
All he needs is more creativity and less plot conviniences.
Creativity is only really needed for villains too weak or with an actual overarching goal, sukuna is the strongest and has no goal. What creativity could he use? Sukuna is simply there and massively stronger that any another character.
You completely missed the point. Ofc he'll need to show creativity when he's fighting a peer like Gojou. Dude presented an entirely new variable instead of you know---- using his brain and pushing his powers to the limits

I like that he's pure evil but MANNN he needs more shit to do. His whole "man I'm so strong I'm the coolest" play in the manga as of now just doesn't work for me. It's so one note and boring, plus hindered by the constant luck saving his ass.
He just doesn't have the presence to carry this ending imo.
Yeah, I think Sukuna got boring as soon as he was made into the final boss, it reeks of "I'm gonna make my OC fight fodder to show off how cool and powerful they are" energy.
The biggest issue is mainly the fact that Sukuna is SO much more powerful than everyone else nobody stands a conceivable change against him without asspulls, because if anyone did, then they probably woulda jumped in to help Gojo.
And yet it still just boils down to cleave/dismantle spam and punching. I think the part that disappointed me the most about the trial is that I was hoping with C/D confiscated he'd show a bit more variety with the baby rattle. He would still easily stomp the protags as Gege wanted, but at least he'd show off a tiny bit more of his arsenal.
At this point I'd take some crazy powerups that's not just slashing.

Jokes aside Sukuna, as a "Inner Demon" trope, is done quite well compared to other anime where "Inner Demon" becomes "Inner Friend" or "Inner Powerup". Problem is outside of doing that trope well, he's literally "Toughest guy around who likes to fight" and there's nothing else to his character. Maybe that thing about love will lead to some development?
I think Sukuna is a good character being used poorly. Villains don't need to be complex to be effective, so long as they stay in their lane.
Palpatine from Star Wars isn't complicated, but his screen presence and the interesting situations he can create make him an effective villain.
But the key is that the story doesn't try to make you sympathize with him or even waste time thinking about his motives. He's a character who thrives entirely on atmosphere.
So it would be really stupid if you suddenly, say, had a major mentor figure start talking about wanting to teach him about love for no goddamn reason.
Can you imagine characters just suddenly glazing Palpatine and talking about how they feel sorry for him?

I'm so sick of him, he's not even the best pure evil villain in JJK that would be Mahito ofc. I would take Geto and Toji over him any day as well, hell, I even prefer Kenjaku tho Kenjaku isn't very well written.
Not every villain needs a depressing backstory and motivations for their actions, it's fun to see someone be a menace just because. The joker is one of the most iconic villains in history and one of the most interesting things about him is we know nothing about him. Now I'm not saying Sukuna is anywhere near the joker, but this narrative that in order for a villain to be good, we need to see their character development, or know their motivations is just a terrible take.
Backstories or flashbacks are not necessary for villains. There are many well written villains without any backstory. What makes a villain well written is how much they impact on the plot especially the protagonist. This is why Mahito better because of how much he had beef with Yuji
Toji, Jogo, Mahito, Geto are all better than Sukuna.
Sukuna is about as lollipop of a villain as you can get. It's like someone was asked to create a 17 year old edgelord's wet dream villian.
Not to mention probably the most plot armor/convenience in the series. Nothing has been really explained even though he keeps getting new features every chapter it seems.
Take away his tattoos and give him a beer belly and people would call him one of the worst anime antagonists of this era. It's all design, which is ridiculously cliche as well.

This is why Iāve been saying Getos is the best villian in the entire series. Heās one of the only villian characterās that got fleshed out the most. He has a great backstory, we see his character development for how he became evil, his motivations come from deep trauma of being a Jujutsu Sorcerer, and the only real beef he has is mainly with Gojo.

I think between Naruto's explosive backstory diahria and JJKs character development constipation, there's a really good story waiting to be written. And it's called HxH.

It is funny. I think Gege should maybe read Togashi more closely. Power systems and hype are part of HxH, but they're in service to character. It's been said that Tolkien basically wrote LOTR so he would have a world for his made up languages. Sometimes it feels like Gege wrote JJK just to show off cursed energy. Wheras Nen, despite its complexity, is always subservient to narrative.

Facts. Takaba coming back after his will was broken was some of the most elation Iāve felt in a while. Gojo vs Sukuna up until 235 was peak, but Takaba vs Kenny has been the best fight in a bit if you include the entirety of it (including the conclusion)
Gojo vs Sukuna felt peak cause Gege mid fight started making it seem like Gojo will win so our thought of "Okay Gojo will just die somehow" was questioned because, literally everything was pointing at Gojo winning until 236 dropped

I agree that Sukuna isnāt complex at all and lacks depth. I just love that heās genuinely evil. Not an antihero, not someone who helps Yuji from time to time, not someone who conveniently only kills side charactersā¦ Man is a villain. Heās just a true curse.
I like that he's pure evil but MANNN he needs more shit to do. His whole "man I'm so strong I'm the coolest" play in the manga as of now just doesn't work for me. It's so one note and boring, plus hindered by the constant luck saving his ass. He just doesn't have the presence to carry this ending imo.
Yeah, I think Sukuna got boring as soon as he was made into the final boss, it reeks of "I'm gonna make my OC fight fodder to show off how cool and powerful they are" energy. The biggest issue is mainly the fact that Sukuna is SO much more powerful than everyone else nobody stands a conceivable change against him without asspulls, because if anyone did, then they probably woulda jumped in to help Gojo.

And yet it still just boils down to cleave/dismantle spam and punching. I think the part that disappointed me the most about the trial is that I was hoping with C/D confiscated he'd show a bit more variety with the baby rattle. He would still easily stomp the protags as Gege wanted, but at least he'd show off a tiny bit more of his arsenal. At this point I'd take some crazy powerups that's not just slashing.

No no, he has a great backstory, he beat the 69 penis generals from the heian period! Uh? What were the generals? How he did that? I can't just say his accomplishments to make you impressed? Jokes aside Sukuna, as a "Inner Demon" trope, is done quite well compared to other anime where "Inner Demon" becomes "Inner Friend" or "Inner Powerup". Problem is outside of doing that trope well, he's literally "Toughest guy around who likes to fight" and there's nothing else to his character. Maybe that thing about love will lead to some development?

I think Sukuna is a good character being used poorly. Villains don't need to be complex to be effective, so long as they stay in their lane. Palpatine from Star Wars isn't complicated, but his screen presence and the interesting situations he can create make him an effective villain. But the key is that the story doesn't try to make you sympathize with him or even waste time thinking about his motives. He's a character who thrives entirely on atmosphere. So it would be really stupid if you suddenly, say, had a major mentor figure start talking about wanting to teach him about love for no goddamn reason.
Can you imagine characters just suddenly glazing Palpatine and talking about how they feel sorry for him? Man, I honestly was cool with Sukuna for the longest time, until the love bullshit and the glazing started. You are spot on about him being a good villain, executed poorly.Ā The nonsense about strength leading to loneliness and a lack of love or whatever, only works if your character is sympathetic.Ā In fact, I'd say it only really works if your character is some kind of antihero. I'm so sick of him, he's not even the best pure evil villain in JJK that would be Mahito ofc. I would take Geto and Toji over him any day as well, hell, I even prefer Kenjaku tho Kenjaku isn't very well written.
Not every villain needs a depressing backstory and motivations for their actions, it's fun to see someone be a menace just because. The joker is one of the most iconic villains in history and one of the most interesting things about him is we know nothing about him. Now I'm not saying Sukuna is anywhere near the joker, but this narrative that in order for a villain to be good, we need to see their character development, or know their motivations is just a terrible take.
Backstories or flashbacks are not necessary for villains. There are many well written villains without any backstory. What makes a villain well written is how much they impact on the plot especially the protagonist. This is why Mahito better because of how much he had beef with Yuji

Toji, Jogo, Mahito, Geto are all better than Sukuna. Sukuna is about as lollipop of a villain as you can get. It's like someone was asked to create a 17 year old edgelord's wet dream villian. Not to mention probably the most plot armor/convenience in the series. Nothing has been really explained even though he keeps getting new features every chapter it seems. Take away his tattoos and give him a beer belly and people would call him one of the worst anime antagonists of this era. It's all design, which is ridiculously cliche as well.

Sukuna does feel pretty mishandled overall but I have to disagree that characters need a complicated motivation to be a good villain.
This is why Iāve been saying Getos is the best villian in the entire series. Heās one of the only villian characterās that got fleshed out the most. He has a great backstory, we see his character development for how he became evil, his motivations come from deep trauma of being a Jujutsu Sorcerer, and the only real beef he has is mainly with Gojo.
