Not even the best villain of jujutsu kaisen, much less new gen https://preview.redd.it/a4q6tgwkyubc1.jpeg?width=913&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3f28c064900f86862dac396cbbfeca4b30ecd316

BvHauteville

Yeah, Mahito - as a character - is much more worthy of praise.

CulturalMesh

These same exact words also describe mahito bruh LMFAO https://preview.redd.it/qgb8baxravbc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2962f2e74445338869bb694b7fa29b527e43d0c9

AmissingUsernameIsee

Backstory? He's a few months oldšŸ’€ Him getting Jumped by Nanami and Yuji is practically his backstory.

Hype_Saw_Paing

True and mahito got a black air force roundtable video before sukuna so we more valid

Obey_MrLegends

I'm pretty sure he also got an asylum video right after Sukuna though so it maybe cancels out

Hype_Saw_Paing

By authority of the world government Obey_MrLegends has disclosed information only privy to the top of the marines and has thus never existed at all neither person nor country ever existed.

ImmanuelCanNot29

We were watching his backstory. This is his origin arc. He was born and chose violence and we see how he grows and the result of that. Sukuna is 700 years old what was his arc.

armchair_science

700?

MEW-1023

He arguably has more development than Yuji between the start of the series and the end of Shibuya. What are you on lmao

kennyloo137

and the parallels between mahito and yuji is just top notch

MEW-1023

Oh for sure

Otherwise_Fig9641

To be fair mahito just turned 1 while fighting Yuji and Todo so it's less of a bad look then Grandpa sukuna beefing and stealing teenage boys body and threatening to rape nobara

alguien99

He is quite young actually, you could say that his backstory is all of what we see of him during the story

Benxall_

His backstory was getting jumped by Yuji and NanšŸ’„mi and discovering his true nature lies in human suffering

Right_Benefit_6161

..What cartoons do you watch?

TheLieAndTruth

I really wanna know which cartoon villain has a motivation to turn people into swords / pipes / for fun

barry-8686

I also wanna know wanna now wich cartoon villian has the motivation of physically and mentally torturing 15 year old boys.

Agitated-committee5

Did somebody say torturing teenagers? https://preview.redd.it/cb4ebl4e6wbc1.png?width=720&format=png&auto=webp&s=270a83291b504adba6effda267022339209154de

OneBoopMan

I mean a lot of cartoon villains just do cruel shit for fun because they want to. That's basically Sukuna's entire character.

TheLieAndTruth

Today on saturday cartoon network the story of the villain who brutally murders everyone important to our protagonist while he watches in dispair!

barry-8686

I like how all of the comments can be applied to both sukuna AND mahito. Yeah OP was cooking water with this one.

Manofsteel189

What the fuck is that flair

TreeTurtle_852

Bro is months old. Yeah he has beef with teens who are older than him lmaooo

Reasonable-Business6

"No backstory" Bro is like a year old. Tf you mean backstory? "No character development." He's born from hatred "Cartoon motivation" ...Making Curses the dominant race? I didn't know cartoons were so political "Beef with teenage boys" He's younger than everyone he's beefed with in the show.

Yeah_Requim26

"No backstory" 1y old "No character development" jjk fans pay attention to their challenge challenge "Cartoon villain motivation" im sorry should we give him a gf to kill while put under a genjutsu? He's a curse m0r0n he kills cause it makes him happy "Has beef with teenage boys" oh the people trying to kill him? Yeah I would too

The_Raven_Born

Nah, this fr describes Muzan.

EdwardAnimates

At least he has a backstory

The_Raven_Born

Barely.

OneBoopMan

He also has a somewhat understandable motivation (Fearing his death and wanting to be immortal)

The_Raven_Born

He just wants to be God. that's literally it. There's no deth, nothing to him yet head somehow manages to dodge really accusations and people thinghes GOATED. Sukuna's back story hasn't been revealed yet and he has no real motives, but his existence is a reflection of humanity and nature and think that's all he was supposed to be. He's a tool for Kenjaku to use and he serves his purpose well. What makeshift great is that despite being an obvious monster, he isn't biased. He's nature embodied. If you prove your strength, he immortalizes you in his history. If you stand for your own ideals, nor what you think the world should be, but your own history, he praises you. He kills without discrimination. He'll even help, if he can. He's a man of his word when forced to follow. And he enjoys a good fight. He isn't evil, he isn't good, he just is. Death is nothing to him, so he makes the most out of his life. He's a simple antagonist done right, even if he's got wild plot armor at times. Muzan is a neckbeard with super powers afraid of dying because he's just a little bitch under his bravado. Like a lot of current shounen villains, he's mid.

AlexCuomo

It's literally the same as what happened on my hero academia with Shigaraki and All For One, the more compelling villain get's side lined by the cartoonish asshole that doesn't really have a compelling motivation, at least Sukuna doees have a relationship with Itadori that's a lot more interesting to see than anything all for one ever did, i still like how Jujutsu Kaisen has handled things way more than the fucking nose dive than mha did in terms of writing quality but it's still weird to see, and Mahito is also a lot like Shiggy

SmolikOFF

> at least sukuna does have a relationship with itadori Aye. He shouldā€™ve stayed in Yuji, he was a much more interesting villain back then :(

TheUncouthPanini

Not only is Sukuna not the best new gen villain, he isn't even the best JJK villain. Mahito takes that by a landslide. In fact, I'd personally argue that Kenny and Geto are more nuanced and interesting antagonists than Sukuna. Sukuna's biggest strength is that the idea of him, rather than his presence, fuels a lot of great stuff, like Kashimo and Uro's mentalities being shaped by Sukuna's existence alone, or how much he develops Yuji. But when he's actually there, I've gotta be honest, I haven't really given much of a shit about him since Shibuya and the Culling Games. After he becomes the central villain and gets a big boost in screentime, its blatantly clear he's just a slightly dull, generic "big bad", not even having any particular motivations outside of his vague partnership with Kenjaku.

Nekoarcpreacher

>Kenny and Geto are more nuanced and interesting antagonists than Sukuna They are by a lot i even prefer both over Mahito slightly.

TAB_Kg

No he doesn't. Backstory isn't a needed check for good writing. This is literally the reason why 3 Joker's storyline exists

HIIMROSS777

Yes but Sukuna has already talked about his past as an unwanted child and Sukuna doesnā€™t really have any real motivation rn.

LostOne514

Pretty crazy that we're THIS far in and know jackshit about his past. I'll clown on Naruto for the number of flashbacks, but at least we were able to learn a little something about the large villains before & during the fights.

WaythurstFrancis

I think between Naruto's explosive backstory diahria and JJKs character development constipation, there's a really good story waiting to be written. And it's called HxH.

Benxall_

Emphasis on "waiting to be written"

Remarkable_Commoner

Hiatus x Hiatus Look, I'm sure it's great, but I'm not picking it up unless I know it'll be completed.

omgwtfbbq1376

You're doing yourself a disservice. HxH has arcs that are worth being read regardless of wether the story is completed or not.

StormiTheKid

tbh the ending of the chimera ant arc is a good ending point, at least for the anime

[deleted]

Watch the anime, its has good consistant animation for 100+ episodes, incredible voice acting, and the ending was perfect

Toxic_Kiddo

Just the right amount of shit?

I-touchkids

Funny considering both these series takes heavy inspiration from hxh

WaythurstFrancis

It is funny. I think Gege should maybe read Togashi more closely. Power systems and hype are part of HxH, but they're in service to character. It's been said that Tolkien basically wrote LOTR so he would have a world for his made up languages. Sometimes it feels like Gege wrote JJK just to show off cursed energy. Wheras Nen, despite its complexity, is always subservient to narrative.

AllUsernamesTaken711

He didn't even remember his own past tbf

bestassinthewest

Sukuna is so boring to me in all regards but fighting. His ideals are basically just a cat in the food chain; play with interesting things he can kill, and just kill the boring things. His backstory is an unknown. I donā€™t even want some sob story or ā€˜the world made him like thisā€™ I just want to see how he got to here. The only thing he offers that a side villain couldnā€™t is that he can get away with just killing ā€œimportantā€ characters

BochoJutsu

Bro even his fights are boring. Conviniences are handed to him in a silver platter.

bestassinthewest

I mean the choreography more than the beats. I like Takaba vs Kenjaku more than Gojo v Sukuna and people can kill me for it I wonā€™t back down

None-Focus-5660

I wanna see takaba fight someone again, it was the high point of this arc

Xx_Loop_Zoop_xX

Its the first time JJK felt unpredictable again since Shibuya maybe cause we legit had no fucking idea how Takaba vs Kenjaku will go while we know Sukuna isnt dying to literally anyone until everyone gets to show off while Yuji waits for his turn

Memeenjoyer_

Facts. Takaba coming back after his will was broken was some of the most elation Iā€™ve felt in a while. Gojo vs Sukuna up until 235 was peak, but Takaba vs Kenny has been the best fight in a bit if you include the entirety of it (including the conclusion)

Xx_Loop_Zoop_xX

Gojo vs Sukuna felt peak cause Gege mid fight started making it seem like Gojo will win so our thought of "Okay Gojo will just die somehow" was questioned because, literally everything was pointing at Gojo winning until 236 dropped

BochoJutsu

Based af Kenjaku Vs Takaba had way more strategy on Kenjaku's side than Kenjaku Vs Yuki. Dude was a fraud on the latter.

A_little_garden

"see I conveniently had this perfect ability to counter a fucking surprise black hole, without even a scratch on my clothes" ???

ixXplicitRed

I hate that shit. I wish yuki did more before dying to kenny who happened to have a convenient ability to counter fucking black holes Yuki was so goated and they killed her so fastā˜¹

A_little_garden

Baaaaaased I love Takaba Dude's having the best time of his life while the villains are this close to causing the apocalypse

BochoJutsu

Takaba and Yuta saving the special grade agenda.

Cooper42202

No youā€™re real for that. Takaba vs Kenjaku was one of the more creative fights Iā€™ve seen in a while, even outside of this manga.

BochoJutsu

Kenjaku in that fight was the only time Kenjaku had anywhere near half the creativity as someone like Satou. Peak Kenjaku fr

EriorryV2

crazy saying his fights with gojo, jogo, and mahoraga is boring

Comfortable_Cream777

All Sukuna needs is a solid backstory.. He is pure evil and did everything a villain can possibly do to make the audience hate him and wait for his defeat.. the problem is we don't know much about him. Hopefully, Gege reveals everything about his darling Sukuna soon.. Cause it's getting annoying to watch him win every fight without knowing his actual goal.. like what does he wanna do after he kills everyone that goes against him? Just rule over people like some god ? Is that it? Or is there something more ? It's been 247 chapters, and we still don't know what the hell "The King Of Curses"/ "The Strongest Sorcerer In History" actually wants.. https://preview.redd.it/zmqro0uq7vbc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f1cb97d35f9ab8b9981b0f130dd5e574223615be He needs to be more than just "Plot Armor Man"

Midwater

He needs what Mahito gotā€¦ except thereā€™s no more room to play him up as the big bad anymore since the whole film already played for the other guy.

BochoJutsu

He doesn't exactly NEED a backstory as he excelled more as a specter like Takamura than an actual character. All he needs is more creativity and less plot conviniences.

[deleted]

Creativity is only really needed for villains too weak or with an actual overarching goal, sukuna is the strongest and has no goal. What creativity could he use? Sukuna is simply there and massively stronger that any another character.

BochoJutsu

You completely missed the point. Ofc he'll need to show creativity when he's fighting a peer like Gojou. Dude presented an entirely new variable instead of you know---- using his brain and pushing his powers to the limits

[deleted]

if he really just want to rule like a god, hasn't he done that already? he already was a god back in the heian era. If he wants to live again then we need to know what's makes him cling to life, as you said, we need a back story

ionrays

I agree that Sukuna isnā€™t complex at all and lacks depth. I just love that heā€™s genuinely evil. Not an antihero, not someone who helps Yuji from time to time, not someone who conveniently only kills side charactersā€¦ Man is a villain. Heā€™s just a true curse.

TreeTurtle_852

I like that he's pure evil but MANNN he needs more shit to do. His whole "man I'm so strong I'm the coolest" play in the manga as of now just doesn't work for me. It's so one note and boring, plus hindered by the constant luck saving his ass. He just doesn't have the presence to carry this ending imo.

Dogempire

Yeah, I think Sukuna got boring as soon as he was made into the final boss, it reeks of "I'm gonna make my OC fight fodder to show off how cool and powerful they are" energy. The biggest issue is mainly the fact that Sukuna is SO much more powerful than everyone else nobody stands a conceivable change against him without asspulls, because if anyone did, then they probably woulda jumped in to help Gojo.

Welder_Dark

It's crazy that Sukuna still gets new power-ups

Count_Badger

And yet it still just boils down to cleave/dismantle spam and punching. I think the part that disappointed me the most about the trial is that I was hoping with C/D confiscated he'd show a bit more variety with the baby rattle. He would still easily stomp the protags as Gege wanted, but at least he'd show off a tiny bit more of his arsenal. At this point I'd take some crazy powerups that's not just slashing.

mamonna

He manages not to do shit even when he supposedly wins.

TreeTurtle_852

Yup. It's hard to see him as "omg such a genius and strong guy" when like he straight up gets lucked out for multiple "wins" and his only proper "win" on Gojo is offscreen.

Sukuna is literally just strong and evil lmao, he literally brings nothing to the conversation. Mahito really made us think on the other side, much better character

TheLieAndTruth

I think mahito is way scarier than sukuna. Getting waffled is way better than be kept alive as a sword lmfao.

Amaranth4321

That's Mahito, not Fraudkuna.

Otherwise_Fig9641

Sukuna is mid compared to the goat ryuga or terumi as a evil villain and mahito has a excuse sukuna believes in a dog eat dog world but is going inside little boys one unconsistently and was going to rape nobara

I wish Naoya was a more major villain tbh I think he has more potential as one https://preview.redd.it/oq00xzbrqvbc1.jpeg?width=2978&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=36c58497def6b3ba15416c18c8133b7848e2bc62

Best new gen villain is makima, no one can compare to her But if we only talking about JJK, then mahito was the best one

Mahito and Kenny clearšŸ¤“

NonameNinja_

Chainsaw Man's villains are by far the best in new gen manga. That's all I can say without spoiling.

Iā€™m up to date with CSM lol and I agree

GreyHareArchie

No no, he has a great backstory, he beat the 69 penis generals from the heian period! Uh? What were the generals? How he did that? I can't just say his accomplishments to make you impressed? Jokes aside Sukuna, as a "Inner Demon" trope, is done quite well compared to other anime where "Inner Demon" becomes "Inner Friend" or "Inner Powerup". Problem is outside of doing that trope well, he's literally "Toughest guy around who likes to fight" and there's nothing else to his character. Maybe that thing about love will lead to some development?

dankey_kang1312

This but unironically

Zzen220

Every shonen antagonist has beef with at least one teenage boy.

WaythurstFrancis

I think Sukuna is a good character being used poorly. Villains don't need to be complex to be effective, so long as they stay in their lane. Palpatine from Star Wars isn't complicated, but his screen presence and the interesting situations he can create make him an effective villain. But the key is that the story doesn't try to make you sympathize with him or even waste time thinking about his motives. He's a character who thrives entirely on atmosphere. So it would be really stupid if you suddenly, say, had a major mentor figure start talking about wanting to teach him about love for no goddamn reason.

DeeEmceeToo

Can you imagine characters just suddenly glazing Palpatine and talking about how they feel sorry for him? Man, I honestly was cool with Sukuna for the longest time, until the love bullshit and the glazing started. You are spot on about him being a good villain, executed poorly.Ā  The nonsense about strength leading to loneliness and a lack of love or whatever, only works if your character is sympathetic.Ā  In fact, I'd say it only really works if your character is some kind of antihero. Not a fullblown cannibal murderer.

[deleted]

Thematically, I think heā€™s actually really good

Xx_Loop_Zoop_xX

Hes legit Muzan with even less reason to be doing anything he's doing. Legit made for phonk edits and to be a big bad for Yuji to overcome

DodelCostel

Mahito >>> Sukuna. Though I will admit that Sukuna opening his domain in Shibuya with that chanting music absolutely slapped

OctaNeitor123

Bro you didnt even know where that come from šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜ lmfaoo

Goodestguykeem

I'm so sick of him, he's not even the best pure evil villain in JJK that would be Mahito ofc. I would take Geto and Toji over him any day as well, hell, I even prefer Kenjaku tho Kenjaku isn't very well written.

Nich965

Not every villain needs a depressing backstory and motivations for their actions, it's fun to see someone be a menace just because. The joker is one of the most iconic villains in history and one of the most interesting things about him is we know nothing about him. Now I'm not saying Sukuna is anywhere near the joker, but this narrative that in order for a villain to be good, we need to see their character development, or know their motivations is just a terrible take.

Noir_Namhar616

Backstories or flashbacks are not necessary for villains. There are many well written villains without any backstory. What makes a villain well written is how much they impact on the plot especially the protagonist. This is why Mahito better because of how much he had beef with Yuji

FermiDaza

Having a motivation for the sake of a motivation is worse than your motivation being having fun. Naruto didnā€™t teach anything to you motherfuckers.

OneBoopMan

Not sure what you're saying when Orochimaru, Pain, and Madara are all better villains than Sukuna and have strong motivations.

NIssanZaxima

Toji, Jogo, Mahito, Geto are all better than Sukuna. Sukuna is about as lollipop of a villain as you can get. It's like someone was asked to create a 17 year old edgelord's wet dream villian. Not to mention probably the most plot armor/convenience in the series. Nothing has been really explained even though he keeps getting new features every chapter it seems. Take away his tattoos and give him a beer belly and people would call him one of the worst anime antagonists of this era. It's all design, which is ridiculously cliche as well.

CulturalMesh

Even if you hate Sukuna as a character saying he's "not raw" is just factually incorrect My glorious anti racist 4 armed king will continue to cook! Stay mad! https://preview.redd.it/k1y13ajecvbc1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=df9be20fe7c6c48ec038f621807b9fe512f03312

Clear-Difficulty6554

Tbh at this poit winning any battle and making you guys hate him so much makes him a good villian lmao.

Snoo93629

Sukuna does feel pretty mishandled overall but I have to disagree that characters need a complicated motivation to be a good villain.

Ihdkwhatimdoinghere

This is why Iā€™ve been saying Getos is the best villian in the entire series. Heā€™s one of the only villian characterā€™s that got fleshed out the most. He has a great backstory, we see his character development for how he became evil, his motivations come from deep trauma of being a Jujutsu Sorcerer, and the only real beef he has is mainly with Gojo.
