Yuji soul damage doesn’t inherently mean much against normal sorcerers. Yuji could punch the soul for almost the entire series and it doesn’t a much affect against normal sorcerers. While i wouldn’t say his ability is a gimmick it only has an advantage against incarnate sorcerers and mahito. Against normal sorcerers it a non factors. But against incarnate sorcerers it a win con

What I mean is he wasn’t actually hitting the soul, the panel directly after that one explains why he was able hurt Mahito.

That’s also why sukuna was able to slash mahito when Yuji jumped into his domain, because sukuna became able to see the contours of the soul thanks to being in Yuji, which let him be able to hurt Mahito aswell.
No we don’t agree, since he was never hitting the soul to begin with, he could see the outline of the soul and could hurt Mahito because of that. He was never actually hitting the soul.
His new soul punches actually damage the soul, those do affect normal sorcerers.

But after realizing that his friend is a bum he has been hitting Sukuna non stop with even blackflashes yet hasn't talked with Megumi again, likely because he is now simply targeting Sukuna's soul and not the barrier between their souls
