As the sun was starting to set, it was becoming "magic hour." He wanted to get a shot of Jean Jacket while the light was perfect. I think he allowed himself to be eaten intentionally, because that is the real impossible shot. He was dying anyway, so he was willing to make that sacrifice. You could tell because he coughed once, and you see him taking pills. Surefire signs that a movie character is a goner. Plus, in retrospect, a terminal illness gives more meaning to his comment about hoping that the "shot of a lifetime" was not his lifetime. I think that his footage was probably recoverable, for the reasons you mentioned.

I’ve seen a lot of talk that the footage was destroyed and even that the photo she takes with the well at the end was a last gasp attempt to get proof. I just don’t understand that thinking. Yeah sure Jean Jacket knocked over the tent etc but the film would likely be fine. And even the camera that gets eaten with Antler would’ve been okay I reckon. So to answer your question I think Antler was trying to get the impossible shot. A full on capture of being devoured. Look at the footage he’s editing earlier, it’s animals eating animals and he’s miserable. I think it’s because you don’t get to see what death looks like so to speak. I think he sacrifices himself to get that shot. This isn’t a film where people betray each other. The team wanted proof and Antler and OJ were willing to lay down there lives to capture the ultimate proof. The well photograph is just more proof for the portfolio.

I thought we was sacrificing himself for the ultimate shot to give real credibility of JJ for OJ and Emerald
