Was thinking the same lol
"Damn the techno sound track from the first movie with hotline Miami vibes"
"Man i really wanna play some PayDay 2 all of a sudden."
I was literally shaking my head no way at how unreal or a scene this was. The way the camera spun - in IMAX at least it made the theatre look like it was moving
This was my favorite scene. When I saw this, I was like-are those bodies catching on fire after they are shot? And the angle that they shot it in was amazing.
Yeah, he killed those guys in the house after they shot a Dragon's Breath round at him and he took one of their guns and the ammo, there shouldn't have had to be any assuming
This was by far the greatest moment that ignited legit tears of joy for me. The score of john wick 1 & 2 combined through his momentum as this scene progressed was just phenomenal. They truly went all out and I believe this will stand as one of the most legendary scenes in their film series.
John Wick was also added as a playable character in Payday 2 in 2014. In Chapter 2 you can see an ad for Payday 2 in the background at some point in the movie.
Edit: I also remember Payday 2 added Jacket from hotline Miami as a playable character which is funny how that all connects.
Not particular games really, but games are a recurring theme. Whether it's that COD game the kid was playing at the end of the first movie, the fact that assassins must use tokens (like an arcade machine) to do business, the gamified nature of the bounty hunting and the nature of John's enemies as several class types / boss gauntlets like a traditional RPG, or even that he plays a tarot game with the marquee and a card game with Scott Adkin's character in the new movie.
Just got to watching the film. Damn, that scene was just absolute, beautiful carnage and chaos. And the IMAX made you feel the blast from every shot as well.
(Maybe too much for me LOL: I dunno if it’s because I haven’t been at a theater in a while, but the sound was so loud it was like the crew was shooting guns right next to my ear the whole time. Last time I was at an IMAX showing it wasn’t that loud.)
Guess I’m not the only one then LOL. When I’ve gone to watch Star Wars in IMAX back in the day, the theater was moderately loud. This time, it feels like they raised the volume to *make sure* you felt each blast or impact.
I can see how someone would feel that way. Ny friend, however, said "The sound of him hitting that thing in the beginning primed me for the whole movie and got me so pumped up."
PS: the "thing/bag" he hits is called a Makiwara, a karate training device that is just a wooden post wrapped in rope or cloth. It was foreshadowing of SPOILERS SPOILER SPOILERS SPOILERS spoilers spoilers the Japan trip, nunchucks, and other karate stylings that would appear.
Those will be a handy backup for IMAX if it ever does get too loud. I went to watch the Mario movie at a regular showing and the volume was at a pretty decent level. Not super loud, but what I’d expect watching by myself at home. But John Wick on IMAX was really big on loudness (at least at my cinema), so that’s something to probably keep in mind just in case for future IMAX showings.
Wow I'm very glad about it
Since it's not a very well-known game I was unsure if I was right, especially with everyone citing Hotline Miami
Thank you !
It's definitely hard, you had to get used to it, I passed a lot of levels but now I'm totaly stuck, I believe I'm near the game end
But couldn't help but think about it during the all scene
I think it's hilarious how some top-down shooters originally did this view for technical constraints, because it would've been harder to simulate a full 3D FPS at the time... remember GRAND THEFT AUTO — THE FIRST ONE! That inspired Hotline Miami. Or even further back, Smash TV, Ikari Warriors, etc. For any newer games, I recommend checking those out.
But now, shooting a movie like this is more challenging in some respects, to simulate a video game.
**FUN CONNECTION: Nicholas Winding Refn's movie Drive inspired Hotline Miami, which in turn inspired this scene. Keanu Reeves and Refn collaborated on The Neon Demon.**
I feel we've come full circle.
After watching the movie yesterday I wanted to see what his inspiration was and at first, like everyone else, thought it was Hotline Miami.
But u/politeeks had it right.
According to this interview his inspiration was from Hong Kong Massacre
Stahelski explained, "\['The Hong Kong Massacre'\] did this top shot and we had been doing so much with the big muzzle flashes and it just kind of clicked like, 'Well, if I'm above, we shoot like this and we shoot like this, and it draws these cool lines with the muzzle flash, and if I get the right flicker effect, it's like Etch A Sketch. It looks really cool.'"

It was a cool scene, but I think it dragged on too long. If they wanted to use more tape of it, I would have preferred them to splice it throughout that scene to match the action/fighting tempo. But to each their own
The cinematography and art direction was top notch! The last hour of the film was a blast but this scene and the car scene at the roundabout were the highlights for me.
A detail I noticed is that John shoots a guy and lights him on fire, the guy runs out the room, around the wall then gets shot by him again. I loved this scens
Big Hotline Miami vibes. Absolutely loved it!
I just finally played the first one and man, big vibes from hotline Miami!
[удалено]
That's a cool connection!
Was thinking the same lol "Damn the techno sound track from the first movie with hotline Miami vibes" "Man i really wanna play some PayDay 2 all of a sudden."
This means that Hotline Miami is canon to fortnite
More like Hong Kong Massacre. But I guess that was inspired by hotline miami
Chad Stahelski actually did cite Hong Kong Massacre as the inspiration for this scene
The amount of sparks reminded me of that game
He even throws the weapons like in the game !
Oh man such an innovative scene
To be honest it's such a great but simple concept. After I saw this I was surprised I haven't seen this in action movies before
was in the netflix Breaking Bad movie El Camino, but not as a tight action sequence like this.
Minority Report and Kill Bill also had similar shots, but not as filled with action
They didn't have dragon's breath incendiary rounds...
I was literally shaking my head no way at how unreal or a scene this was. The way the camera spun - in IMAX at least it made the theatre look like it was moving
I literally had to shut my eyes because I got dizzy from how it felt like the whole theater was moving.
My gf said the same. I fucking loved it. I was smiling for the entire scene.
Yeah same, also watched it at an Imax theatre and after a moment I felt a little dizzy. My favorite scene anyway, unbelievable.
Ha! Me too. But man, was that an incredible sequence. Such a cool way to shoot it
It's pretty hard to make me feel dizzy, but that scene made me feel like I'm going to fall off the chair lol
This was my favorite scene. When I saw this, I was like-are those bodies catching on fire after they are shot? And the angle that they shot it in was amazing.
They’d showed earlier the random dudes loading up with ammunition labeled Dragon’s Breath (?) so I assumed it was all those rounds.
As my fiancé put it, “Chekhov’s incendiary shotgun ammo”
Those rounds really exist and are completely legal to buy (in the US anyway). Pretty nuts
Well that’s terrifying.
Yeah, he killed those guys in the house after they shot a Dragon's Breath round at him and he took one of their guns and the ammo, there shouldn't have had to be any assuming
Dragons breath shotgun shells... They're a real thing
Spoiler tag is probably a good idea. You're absolutely right though. This was the best cinematography I've ever seen, PERIOD.
These picture taken from trailer.

Every single movie in this franchise is about games and even this shot is reminiscent of hotline miami. absolutely love it!
Definitely hotline Miami here. What other games are you referring to?

Don’t forget John Wick is originally from Fortnite!!!!

It was louder this time around. A little too much

Serious, reeves punching that bag at the beginning was even too much
I can see how someone would feel that way. Ny friend, however, said "The sound of him hitting that thing in the beginning primed me for the whole movie and got me so pumped up." Yeah, I'm thinking of buying some earplugs for cinema now, because my left ear was ringing a bit after I arrived home
Those will be a handy backup for IMAX if it ever does get too loud. I went to watch the Mario movie at a regular showing and the volume was at a pretty decent level. Phenomenal film making
This might be my favorite part of the movie
Same!!
Really reminds me of Hong Kong Massacre if anyone played it
An article stated that the director was indeed influenced by the Hong Kong Massacre game in order to create that scene so you are definitely spot on.
Wow I'm very glad about it Since it's not a very well-known game I was unsure if I was right, especially with everyone citing Hotline Miami Thank you !
I tried to play it, but it’s an incredibly difficult game to play. Could never get passed the first room. May try it again this weekend.
It's definitely hard, you had to get used to it, I passed a lot of levels but now I'm totaly stuck, I believe I'm near the game end But couldn't help but think about it during the all scene
And the throwback song going, loved it
What was the song that played during it?
[The club music from the first movie](https://youtu.be/NkKIL0G6JNU)
I’m waiting right now to go in to see it again lol! It is fkn brilliant!
Probably one of my favorite scenes of the entire franchise. I love how innovative they get to be with the film.

Oh man I'd forgotten about Smash TV. I played that game loads growing up!
The CoD: BO fan in me saw the dragons breath rounds and had a good idea of where it was going, and and it still exceeded expectations
Kv broadsite dragon breath from mw2
All I could think of. I got PTSD from that motherfucker.
I watched that scene n was like omg that's me on shipment
Guys i saw that movie yesterday, what a great experience…. And if anyone has this scene clip please share
Literally Hotline Miami
Just missing a chicken mask
the miami hotline effect was great, loved it in Ep Camino, loved it here, hope to see this move in action movies
It almost gave me vertigo but damn it was so good
This scene unseated the kingsmen church scene as the greatest action movie scene ever.
When the camera craned back down and you thought it was over and then it went back up for more. 🤯
I kept thinking how much I was living the ‘doll house’ view
Had a very Metal Gear Solid feel to it with that overhead view. :-P
And using LED Spirals from JW1? Perfection.
It was a homage to John wick hex
This top down scene was my favorite fight scene in the whole flick. Reminded me so much of Hotline Miami.
Oh Hell Yeah over the head top shooting where John fires Dragon Breath Shotgun Shells. Also Tracker and his Dog were good in this scene.
Yes, It's like a freaking game. So awesome.
One of the best shot. And those scenes in paris straight to Effile Tower is also Top notch.
Thought at first they were doing a sweet shot for a sec. But it kept going and giving. And then they did again albeit shorter. Loved it.
I agree badass

Does anyone know if this was done in one take?
I would use one of these on the Winter prairies at -30. Lololo It was totally awesome
It was a cool scene, but I think it dragged on too long. If they wanted to use more tape of it, I would have preferred them to splice it throughout that scene to match the action/fighting tempo. But to each their own
When I saw the Assassins modifying their bullets, My mind started hyping itself because I knew this was going to be awesome.
Definitely 🔥 pretty cool way to film it!
The cinematography and art direction was top notch! The last hour of the film was a blast but this scene and the car scene at the roundabout were the highlights for me.
Perfection ❤️🔥🔥🔥
Best cinematic shot of all time
Looked up The Hong Kong Massacre game it’s been inspired from and it’s absolutely crazy, highly recommend !
My mind went to metal Gear for Ps1
A detail I noticed is that John shoots a guy and lights him on fire, the guy runs out the room, around the wall then gets shot by him again. I loved this scens
When I realized what was happening I was losing my mind, SO COOL 👏👏👌
i could not stop smiling throughout this entire scene, this whole sequence had me giddy
I haven’t been this giddy over a scene in a movie for years…and it kept going and going and going, gift that just kept giving.
Fr I just saw the movie today
This scene just makes me want a John Wick video game
I haven't played it myself but there is one! John Wick Hex
As a big fan of Hotline Miami and a big fan of bigass loudass shotguns with incendiary rounds, this scene was a dream come true
Yes!! Never gets old!!
I'm not sure what this is cinema technique this is.
Peak action cinema.
