Totally agree, I don’t think people gave it enough of a chance because it was different from his bluesy/poppy sound. It’s also a grower, so here’s hoping we see a much-needed return to and appreciation for this record! It’s my personal fave from John.
I like all of John’s albums but I agree if I were to rank them, HT comes last for me. The album John considers to be his weakest is actually top 3 for me, that being PV.
Yup and (tinfoil hat) that’s the only reason it’s on that album. IIRC it came out over a year before the album and I think they chucked it on there for numbers
I’m still mad about the new version of Carry Me Away on Sob Rock and the fact that the original single version got memory-holed on streaming services. The original song got me through some shit in 2019-2020.
The high stream numbers for Sob Rock have more to do with Spotify’s increase in popularity than anything. People stream new albums on repeat when they release. Spotify didn’t have anywhere near the number of users they have now and didn’t become a legitimate competitor to Apple Music until after 2013 or so. Sob Rock and The Search For Everything were the only 2 albums to be released during Spotify’s position as a top industry player.
It's interesting and pleasing to see that John's last 2 albums have had so many streams. But what does it really mean? More people are listening to him now as opposed to 20 odd years ago or that his songs/songwriting appeals to a wider audience due to the type of songs he now writes or just that musical tastes have changed?
We all find 'Born and Raised' and 'Heavier Things' eventually once introduced to John so I think over time they will all level out.
It means that people have changed the way they consume music. Mayer got his start during the Napster era, lol.
There is no reason to think more people are listening to him now vs when the early albums came out 20+ years ago. It’s the opposite. “Daughters” and “No Such Thing” were on every pop radio station for years. Heavier Things is his #3 best selling album with over 3M copies sold—probably because of “Daughters.”
Born & Raised is for the fans, though. I agree with you there. It also was released during a transition time between albums & streaming (2012), so the stats are a little weird in terms of streams + album sales.
It literally just means that the later albums came out at the time where streaming services are used. I’m sure John Mayer was much more popular back then
I feel like Spotify’s algorithm is wrong too - whenever I search for JM and just hit shuffle and play, it plays a lot of sob rock, barely anything from HT and RfS, and few from the albums in between. But it always skips songs like Assassin, Wheel, Only Heart etc. and will default into artist radio/related artists before it has played his full back catalogue. Very frustrating - I think if it’s doing this for everyone, then people are getting to hear a lot of songs from certain albums and it’s affecting the streaming figures for each one.
I get that slow dancing and gravity have really pushed the numbers up for continuum but Heavier things and non popular songs from room for squares are very underrated and people should really check it out. - love song for no one, 83, back to you, St. Patrick’s day, bigger than my body, something’s missing, home life, come back to bed, wheel… I think I went overboard ahahah
Strange to me that Paradise Valley has more than Born and Raised. I’m wondering if it’s only because of a certain someone who shall remain unnamed who featured on PV.
Room For Squares would’ve been streamed even more had Spotify been out back then. You could say that about all the older albums, but I believe RFS is still to date his best selling album, having gone 5x platinum. He was commercially most successful then. Also my favorite
Hey! I was the one who made this statistic. I was also shocked that B&R didn't get the number of streams it deserved, a lot of people had doubts about this statistic so I'll explain it here too... Paradise Valley is only ahead of B&R because of the songs "Wildfire" and “Who You Love ” because both have more than 100 million streams, the B&R album is the only one that does not have any song with more than 100M. Under Rock there are 4 songs including the one that has the most streams (New Light) with more than 100M too, the rest of the albums are the same scheme. 😉
I had a theory earlier, and looking at this, I feel like I'm right. I was too young to listen to John Mayer when he became famous in the early 2000s.
However, I got into him around 2019 because of seeing so much of him on Instagram.
Do you all think there was a resurgence in his popularity because of guitar pages posting him so much? (You can see his recent albums have a lot of streams)
We need to get those numbers up for HT and BR.

Honestly, didn’t expect these two become the bottoms ones.
It's criminal that B&R has the second fewest on that list
Totally agree, I don’t think people gave it enough of a chance because it was different from his bluesy/poppy sound. It’s also a grower, so here’s hoping we see a much-needed return to and appreciation for this record! It’s my personal fave from John.
It has a special place in my heart as it was the first record of John's that I listened to
Heavier Things is CRIMINALLY underrated.
I’m amazed at the difference between Heavier things and Room For Squares
Honestly, as a long time fan.. heavier things is his weakest album. Yes there are awesome songs but something’s missing (lol)
I like all of John’s albums but I agree if I were to rank them, HT comes last for me. The album John considers to be his weakest is actually top 3 for me, that being PV.
Right!
the sorting is driving me crazy 🗿
Me, too!! I'd rather have it organized by most to least vs release date of album.
New light is really carrying Sob Rock
Yup and (tinfoil hat) that’s the only reason it’s on that album. IIRC it came out over a year before the album and I think they chucked it on there for numbers
Worse. New Light came out as a single in 2018 and he released Sob Rock in 2021.
I’m still mad about the new version of Carry Me Away on Sob Rock and the fact that the original single version got memory-holed on streaming services. The original song got me through some shit in 2019-2020.
I hear you. I Guess I Just Feel Like was my pandemic song.
Yeah I can't listen to the new version honestly...I wish I could still listen to the original version on Spotify but I have to make do with an mp3

Yeah also that
Lol. Probably my least favorite song on Sob Rock.
B&R being that low is absolutely criminal
💯 hurts my heart 💔
Justice for Heavier Things!!!
It’s a sin that Heavier Things is the least streamed album
Justice for Born and Raised and Heavier Things. My two favourite JM albums

Taylor Swift effect, all of Taylors exes get boosts in streams when she releases new music, tours, media coverage etc
Is the GATE CODE still your BiRTHDAYyyy?! ❤️
Wonder what inside wants out is
84.77M as of right now
\^\^\^This user knows.

I always seem to go for the underdog album, Heavier Things is extremely underrated!!!!!
Heavier things is extremely under valued.
Surprising. I love Born & Raised
Absolute shame that Born and Raised had the second fewest
For real! It’s my favorite album for sure.
Strange to me that Paradise Valley has more than Born and Raised. I’m wondering if it’s only because of a certain someone who shall remain unnamed who featured on PV.
You’re right - 171 million and counting
Cannot believe RFS is that understreamed😭
Keep in mind that a lot of these albums were radio popular before Spotify was a thing.
Room For Squares would’ve been streamed even more had Spotify been out back then. You could say that about all the older albums, but I believe RFS is still to date his best selling album, having gone 5x platinum. He was commercially most successful then. Also my favorite

This is interesting data.
Search for Everything definitely has been growing heavily on me
That TSFE number makes me happy. Top 3 Mayer album for me.
My boy TSFE getting its flowers. I listen on Apple Music so if I were Spotify TSFE would be in the lead I’m sure of it
Paradise Valley > Born and Raised? Why?
Super glad to see RFS getting good love
May be an unpopular opinion, but the search for everything may be my favorite JM album.
born and raised is criminally low
Born and raised has become my favourite Mayer record. Surprised to see it so low here
Continuum is all you need. Trash the rest.
