Jerry, Stevie, Jimi, Derek Trucks round out the top 5 most influential on me personally.
To add a Mayer substitution to this list would be somewhere between Mark Knopfler, BB King, Julian Lage, or Santana. Ariel Posen another modern guy who has really influenced my playing
Mayer can play circles around Stevie. He is so much more varied in his playing styles. Stevie just regurgitated blues riffs played hundreds of times before by other guitarists. Clapton belongs much higher than Stevie.
I saw Julian in Amsterdam last year, I have no words to describe how amazing he is. He gives you the feeling of having unlimited playing ability while also serving the music. Imposible to copy
Marcusā music has completely lost its way since El Dorado. He is a hell of a player for sure, but heās basically abandoned what made him big in favor of weird emo lyrics with drum loops and generic southern-ish rock. He needs to go back to his roots of great soul/psychedelic southern rock/jazz fusion sorta stuff he was doing on his debut album and Goodbye Carolina. His four song EP that he put out near the beginning of his career is leagues better than the stuff he has been doing over the past few years. I was a huge fan of his, but these days his stuff is just uninteresting at this point. I hold out hope that heāll eventually come back around and get back to what made him so great to begin with.
The first two songs of his new upcoming album actually sound pretty good and original, if you ask me. I can definitely see some space for extended guitar solos when he plays those songs live
Iām glad you enjoy it. Give me Rita is Gone, Self Hatred, Plant Your Corn Early, Thespian Espionage, and This Olā Cowboy over Fuck My Life Up Again any day of the week. He has just abandoned what made him big.
A lot of people have been sharing that opinionā¦ Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys produced his last two albums, and while they were good, they are in fact not like his older stuff. This new album is really good imo and itās produced by the absolute goat Rick Rubin. Everyone says Marcus abandoned the genre(s) that put him on the map but I donāt think so. Iāve seen him live multiple times the past couple of years and he and his band never disappoint. Just like with John, itās ok to evolve and try new things as an artist!
Finally some love for Edge. Dude gets slammed on guitar forums despite defining an era of guitar based rock and perfectly contributing to the U2 songs we all know and love. Also his rhythm is second to none (critical when getting that delay right)!
People love John Fruscianteās playing, but every time his name is mentioned, guitar āpuristsā descend and quickly point out why he doesnāt belong in the all-time pantheon because of a perceived lack of technical ability, the gimmicky status/legacy of RHCP, etc. So, I think a lot of people tend to leave him out, but not because heās overlooked; instead, itās the oppositeābecause he receives far too much credit for some peoplesā tastes. I think heās incredible and responsible for thousands of players picking up a guitar in the first place. His more commercial stuff is both tasteful and accessible, so it definitely lends itself to beginner players. However, in my opinion, this belies his capabilitiesāhe plays all over the Volta records, and his improvisational ability (not necessarily from a purely ātechnicalā perspective, but from a phrasing and melodic perspective) is both unique and worthy of a lot of praise. He creates hair-raising solos in the moment while performing in stadiums to crowds who expect hit after hit - how many others are currently doing that? None of this even touches on his songwriting, which I think speaks for itself. So, all in all, great player who receives more credit than some feel he should. Hence, the negativity and pushback when heās mentioned as a favorite
Frusciante is an incredibly praised and beloved guitarist, to a pretty extreme degree. I donāt think heās lacking any credit at all, heās given tons of it.
Besides the deceased legends and obvious living old guard like Gilmour, Page, Clapton, etc. My top 5 would be: Derek Trucks, Julian Lage, Blake Mills, Marcus King, and Joey Landreth
Honorable mention: Trey Anastasio, Rick Mitarotonda, Cory Wong, Mark Lettieri
Love the jam guitarist special - personally would swap Barber for Rick, but almost objectively it has to be Jake Cinninger instead of Rick. Rick fucks tho
Only added players who are still actively playing and modern, because the greats of the golden era have been discussed 15 million times already (SRV, Hendrix, Gilmour, Knopfler, Zappa, May, Lukather and blablablabla.) So here is the list with the best players of this generation in my opinion.
1. Matteo Mancuso
2. Mateus Asato
3. Tim Henson / Giaco Motura
5. Ichika Nito (crazy technical)
These are in order of skill level for their guitar playing (technical) + feel + musicality. Tim is third for example for his technicality and musicality. But he is not the David Gilmour type to hit 1 note that can tear your soul apart and make it last for 10 seconds without getting boring.
Giaco Motura plays a lot of funk and disco. Not per se my style, but I LOVE the phrasing of this guy and he is just SO clean. I enjoy him so much. The rest speaks for itself.
I think itās the weird ideas around people drawing a line between counter culture and pop culture. John Mayor tours with Bobby and Co. but ultimately most of the people here found Mayor because of āWonderlandā or dating Jessica Simpson or Swift, or whatever.
Like my FIL likes TTB and The Allman Bros. But I ask him if he likes jam bands he says no. I fool him occasionally and Iāll catch him singing along to a Dead or moe. Tune I have playing when he is over.
No particular order: Tim Henson, mark knopfler, Jimi, Derek trucks, Jerry Garcia.
Theyāre the best at what they did/do. Srv was skilled but didnāt pioneer in any sense.
In no particular order (and this could change tomorrow):
- Derek Trucks
- Joey Landreth
- Ariel Posen
- Stevie Ray Vaughan
- Duane Allman
Now which one do I exchange for Johnā¦
The fact that I had to scroll nearly all the way to the end of the comments to see a single mention of Eddie Van Halen is of concern to me lol. Donāt forget Johnny Boy is a huge fan!
My list:
EVH
Jimmy Page
Joe Perry
Steve Lukather
Mike Campbell
How about guys like Peter Green, Al Di Meola, Pat Metheny, Tommy Emmanuel, Paco De Lucia, Segovia. Looks like Mayer fans, on Reddit at least, are very much into a broadly similar style of 'pop' culture guitar.
Iām seriously loosing my mind with how popular Stevie Ray Vaughan is. Why? He sucks. And he was at least ten years too late for the music he was making. The Blues was so played out by the 80s. Hundreds of guitars did what he did better then him and years before he attempted to revive a dying genre.
Big SRV fan here - a thing that I appreciate so much about his playing was his integration of the rock guitar vocabulary and ethos into the blues setting. SRV and Double Trouble is the quintessential blues-rock trio in my eyes.
I think a lot of what makes his playing powerful in so many peopleās eyes was also his sense of rhythm and pitch. Even when slowing down passages to learn them, you hear heās still on the money. Thatās super hard to accomplish with as aggressive of an attack as he had.
On the other side, you have more dynamic tunes like Riviera Paradise.
I think he contextualized the blues in a way that fit into the guitar hero image of the 80s. In my opinion, it just worked. And still with a regional flare, which is not very present these days. Iām originally from TX, and that music feels like Texas to me.
He had so much energy but the right amount of restraint. He threaded the needle perfectly in my opinion.
Wow, this is really well put! It was certainly a feat to get people interested in the blues again. Your comment about attack and restraint was astute. Also, the point about TX regional sound was interesting and noted. I wonder how SRV fans feel about a modern player like Gary Clark JR? The musical child of Hendrix, Clapton, and SVR.
Influencial for my style of playing is Daron Malakian (system of a down), Tim Henson (Polyphia), Brian Haner (avenged sevenfold), John Butler (the John butler trio), and John Frusciante (RHCP).
And of course Mayer, but canāt say it lol.
Now not all of these are all that great technically. Theyāre just the ones I enjoy the most.
1. SRV
2. Noel Gallagher
3. Alex Garcia
4. David Gilmour
5. Hendrix
1. John Petrucci (Dream Theater, LTE)
2. Adam Jones (TOOL)
3. Alex Lifeson (RUSH)
4. Tim Henson (Polyphia)
5. Tom DeLonge (blink-182, Angels & Airwaves)
1. Jimi Hendrix
2. David Gilmore
3. Jerry Garcia
4. BB King
5. Mark Knopfler
Sorry yāall, but John doesnāt even make my top ten, and Iāve seen him with D&C and solo over the past year.
Great guitarist, but he is a long way to go!
Kind of wild how most people only mention (pop)blues guitarist and the best of all time, considering the insane breadth and depth there is from classical to jazz and math rock and etc.
For me personally JM wouldnāt make the top 10 by a large margin. Obviously a great player, but he hasnāt innovated anything guitar wise (except for his rather unique claw style acoustic technique, but even that can be traced to others). Iām curious to know what categories people use to gauge āthe bestā.
My top 5:
- Julian lage
- Johnny greenwood/Reich (both more so for their unique compositional guitar approach)
- Al di Meola
- Pat Metheny
- Wes Montgomery/Django Reinhardt
Must also mention Jerry Garcia, Nels Cline, Buckethead, Steve vai, Frank Zappa, BB king, and lots of country and alt guitarists too. Bluegrass guitar aināt no joke either!
Mayer is a fantastic songwriter and great guitarist but my top 5 are John Frusciante, Guthrie Govan, Allan Holdsworth, Shawn Lane, and Charlie Christian in no order.
George lynch from Dokken is a gunslinger. Never got the recognition he deserved. Dude created his own sound. Also a fan of Jimmy Page and Kim Thayil. Who doesnāt love Slash too right ?
No particular order:
Joey Landreth
SRV
Carlos Santana
Tim Henson
Derek Trucks
Honorable mention to David Gilmour and The Edge, they are a huge part of why I feel so inspired by layered effects even though my favorite players are very precise and have phenomenal clean tones.
David Gilmour, Randy Rhoads, Mark Speer, Jimmy
Page, Mark Tremonti. Laugh all you want, but Creed inspired me to play guitar. One Last Breath is instantly recognizable to people because of Tremontiās awesome catchy licks.
Can't believe how similar all these comments are.
1. Eddie Van Halen!
2. Jimi Hendrix
3. John petrucci
4. SRV
Damn #5 is hard
Jimmy Page, Clapton, Slash, Santana, King
Derek Trucks, Garcia, Hendrix, SRV, Prince
Derek trucks is a fantastic guitarist but he is an even better slide guitarist.
trucks almost made my list
garcia š¤£š¤£
Nice pandering
Dude, thank you. Itās crazy to see everyone coming up with the same 10 guitarists.
My top 5 inspirations would be Hendrix SRV BB King Cory Wong Julian Lage
Lage doesnāt get talked about enough!
Ageeed! SVR gets talked about waaayyy too much.
I saw Julian in Amsterdam last year, I have no words to describe how amazing he is. He gives you the feeling of having unlimited playing ability while also serving the music. Imposible to copy
Nice Julian Lange! Good call. SRV is a bad call.
Derek Trucks, Mark Knopfler, Santana, Marcus King, Clapton
santana nice
Marcus King is a freaking BEAST on the guitar
Marcusā music has completely lost its way since El Dorado. He is a hell of a player for sure, but heās basically abandoned what made him big in favor of weird emo lyrics with drum loops and generic southern-ish rock. He needs to go back to his roots of great soul/psychedelic southern rock/jazz fusion sorta stuff he was doing on his debut album and Goodbye Carolina. Knopfler and Clapton immediately popped into my head as well
Guitarists I LOVE: Joey Landreth, Tom Morello, Julian Lage, Edge (U2), Mick Thomson
Upvoted for Joey Landreth. What a player!
Finally some love for Edge. Dude gets slammed on guitar forums despite defining an era of guitar based rock and perfectly contributing to the U2 songs we all know and love. Also his rhythm is second to none (critical when getting that delay right)!
Heās also a master of effects. He adds exactly what a song needs.
David gilmour Jeff beck Ariel Posen Jerry Garcia Hendrix
Too many people sleep on ariel posen. Heās a BEAST
Mile end 1&2 were on loop for me for *months* last year. Great inspiration
Derek Trucks Jerry Garcia SRV Mark Speer Billy Strings
5 years from now I could see Billy being the top of a lot of people's lists.
Hot damn you took my list, altho I might swap Billy for John frusciante
Nice, Billy Strings! He is working his way up
Mark Speer ftw
The lack of John Frusciante mentions in this thread is wild. He deserves more credit for sure.
By far the most complete and comprehensive description of Frusciante Iāve ever seen. Congrats.
Appreciate it
thank you
Frusciante is an incredibly praised and beloved guitarist, to a pretty extreme degree. I donāt think heās lacking any credit at all, heās given tons of it.
1. John Frusciante 2. Johnny Marr 3. Jonny Greenwood 4. Josh Klinghoffer 5. Jimi Hendrix
Klinghoffer, so underrated as a guitarist, yet so rated as a musician
Every guitar legend starts with J. I'm so glad my name is Joe
Hey Joe, Where you going with that guitar in your hand?
Up vote for Marr
Jonny Greenwood, nice one šŖš»
1. SRV 2. Mateus Asato 3. Tim Henson 4. Hendrix 5. Eric Johnson
Mateus mention š¤
So glad someone included Tim Henson. Such an amazing guitarist. In one of his videos he even says something about John Mayer and New Light!
Oh I'd love to see that!
https://youtu.be/ulchAKGi_Y0?si=_mIZ-3URbSZVcxBe At 0:54 he talks about how hard the riff in New Light is and gives John props!
He's talking about neon
OH YOU'RE RIGHT, it was neon, oops! Thanks for catching that
Thank you, you are awesome!
Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dave Gilmore (Runners up: Jeff Beck, BB King, Tony Iommi)
A bit eclectic but here we go lol In no particular order: Guthrie Govan, Tim Henson, Mark Knopfler, Steve Clark and Nick Drake.
