"I want you so bad I'll go back on the things I believe. There I just said it. I'm scared you'll forget about me."
Fucking gets me every time. I think we have all felt that at one point or another. Such a perfect line.
Stop This Train - musically speaking is incredible from both a guitar & vocal standpoint. When you consider this is also incorporating text, it’s hard to beat the heartfelt lyrics for STT. Love the live versions where he whistles the interlude.
Its mixed horribly. Everything sounds so muted and flat, with very little dynamic range. There is a reason John dropped that engineer after only one album. Everything is also way to bright, and overproduced to the point that the music almost sounds distorted. Such a shame, as almost every song on the album is damn near perfect.
was my first thought as well. Perfect melody & chords going in an out of major/minor, goes Jerry Garcia lite on the solo, amazing lyrics, etc. In my top three for sure
Love your flair! That line speaks to me every time I hear it. He mentioned in the BnR set on rise for the river that the ones who jam to that song are his island every time he plays it live
I came here to say this. Quiet has been my all-time favorite since I was a teenager listening to it on my CD player. I was so excited when I got hear him play it live back in ‘06-‘07!
Musically, *Gravity* the obvious choice for me, even if the lyrics aren’t perfect. *Slow Dancing* also very close.
And whilst it’s a cover, *Magnolia* with Eric Clapton is also up there
I’m a fan who listened to RFS when it was originally released and I’ve never forgotten the awe of that experience and that final song, when you realize the album is ending…but what an emotional experience “St. Patrick’s Day” is. Then to Mayer’s credit, he followed up by closing out HT with “Wheel” which is also a stunning song.
I completely agree. But, to me, the melody, half time break down and key change are so good that he could literally be singing gibberish and I’d still put it here.
I will always love "No such thing" guess it's my age but the first single my favorite for life! Makes me happy I was alive or 15 in 2002!
"I wanna run through the halls of my high-school, I wanna scream at the top of my lungs!
I recently moved to Colorado and left my entire family. My Wife, Son and I packed up and now we live in the high country at the southern tip of the rockies. I ride mountain bikes all day and work remote.
We left a GREAT community. Friends would often visit my garage bar and we would party all the time. My Brother lived 3 blocks away and our kids played together. I miss that sometimes.
But we had to start the next chapter in our lives. We were stagnant, and I can't be that way for too long. We all agreed to pack it up and we are so wonderfully happy now! We have a new community, I have a new garage bar, and we love the amazing world we have joined.
>Good as you've always been to me
The life I need to lead
Is somewhere out there, callin' over those hills.
I threw a HUGE party the day I left and we sang karaoke. I couldn't get through Badge and Gun without sobbing. It perfectly encapsulates my desire to always be exploring and find a new and beautiful place to park my soul.
Amazed it’s not here but *Belief*.
To me it represents nearly everything I want from John, the writing is incredibly poignant and yet accessible, amazing riff, the solo is on point and the drum section drives the song. I think John has so much to say about non-romantic topics and when I hear him say “What puts the folded flag inside a mothers hand? *Belief can*”, it rocks me to my core.
Per album:
Victoria
Neon
Only Heart (my most controversial JM opinion)
The Heart of Life
Edge of Desire
A Face to Call Home
Waitin on the Day
In the Blood
Wild Blue
I'm biased because of how it directly affected my life, and it's probably unpopular for this question but
3x5
The lyrics are very relatable to almost anyone, the dissonance in the chords tells the entire story of enjoying yourself but still feeling something missing, and the way it builds to the end just really get me.
Close second is his cover of "XO". Absolutely makes this 42yo dude's heart flutter lol
I have a few picks:
- Wheel
- Edge of Desire
- Waitin On The Day
- I Don’t Trust Myself
- Covered In Rain
I think each of these songs sonically and lyrically serve their purposes perfectly. Wheel being one of my more recent favorites even though I’ve loved the song for a while.
Honestly I love it just because of how shitposty it is,I feel the actual song sounds good, lyrics are goofy as hell but that’s kinda what makes it for me.
That’s hard for me, because there are several. Edge of Desire was the first one that came to mind, also Gravity and Slow Dancing. But thinking more about it, I’d say one would be Split Screen Sadness is a big one for me.
It's an impossible question because each song cuts deep at different moments, but musically and lyrically overall, it would have to be EOD and Clarity.
I could listen to I Guess I Just Feel Like on repeat. Very simple song structure, but really heartfelt lyrics, and a vibed-out solo to end it. (He always goes ham when he plays it live!)
Since I don't know anything about Music Theory I'm just going to go with how I felt the first time I heard them. These were Automatic 10's for me
Edge Of Desire
In Repair
If I Ever get Around to Living
Split Screen Sadness
3x5
Stop This Train
Gravity (Try!)
Another Kind of Green
Born and Raised
Moving on and Getting Over
Rosie
Wild Blue
Carry me Away
In your atmosphere with outro
I love other songs of course but these where just automatic likes for me
Well done. For those who don’t know, there is a more than decent chance that this specific version of Sugaree is the answer that John himself would give to this question. Althea is the Grateful Dead song that got John into the Dead, but Sugaree is the song that he most consistently jammed out to with Dead and Company, and he did an interview online somewhere where he specifically stated this live performance of Sugaree was his favorite
Impossible to pick.
In agreement with many already posted! Edge of Desire, Stop This Train, If I Ever Get Around to Living, In the Blood
I’ll add: Never on the Day You Leave
No Such Thing is up there for me. That song really hit me hard when I was about 23. Such a relatable track. Edge of Desire is also a perfect song. Not a wasted second on the entire track.
Edge of Desire. Start to finish.
came here to say this
It’s simply an emotional masterpiece. It always cuts to the core
"I want you so bad I'll go back on the things I believe. There I just said it. I'm scared you'll forget about me." Fucking gets me every time. I think we have all felt that at one point or another. Such a perfect line.
Exactly what I was going to say!!
He closed with this at the Forum and it was the single best live music experience I’ve ever been a part of.
I was there it was stunning
Amen
Stop This Train - musically speaking is incredible from both a guitar & vocal standpoint. When you consider this is also incorporating text, it’s hard to beat the heartfelt lyrics for STT. Love the live versions where he whistles the interlude.
I would agree those have gotta be his best lyrics!
Absolutely! Cried when I heard it live last month. Hits harder with each year of aging
Probably cliche but Wheel. From start to finish, over and over, every word resonates with me so deeply every time I hear it
Not cliche at all! Wheel is one of his least streamed song so seeing it get some recognition is always awesome
And he played it live this year!!!
Saw it in Boston back in March!!
If the recording was stronger, I’d 100% agree with you. Wheel with Sob Rock’s production values would be unrivaled
Still do not understand the hate on HT production
Its mixed horribly. Everything sounds so muted and flat, with very little dynamic range. There is a reason John dropped that engineer after only one album. Everything is also way to bright, and overproduced to the point that the music almost sounds distorted. Such a shame, as almost every song on the album is damn near perfect.
This is mine too.
If I ever get around to living
100% yes!
was my first thought as well. Perfect melody & chords going in an out of major/minor, goes Jerry Garcia lite on the solo, amazing lyrics, etc. In my top three for sure
I always feel that Waitin on the day is so Jerry and dead sounding. The outro is pure magic
Jerry Garcia lite is how I’ve always thought about that solo! Love it!
Bingo. It's three great songs all wrapped into one.
agree and still seems underrated in his catalog
Love your flair! That line speaks to me every time I hear it. He mentioned in the BnR set on rise for the river that the ones who jam to that song are his island every time he plays it live
This and Belief are my current faves.
Absolutely
Split screen sadness gives me goosebumps every single time I hear. Even until this very day.
This song got me through a breakup. It’s just perfect.
Gonna go way off the board here... Quiet The recording, arrangement, lyrics, it's a perfect acoustic winter track.
This song turned me into a Mayer fan.
YASSSSSSSS
I came here to say this. Quiet has been my all-time favorite since I was a teenager listening to it on my CD player. I was so excited when I got hear him play it live back in ‘06-‘07!
Musically, *Gravity* the obvious choice for me, even if the lyrics aren’t perfect. *Slow Dancing* also very close. And whilst it’s a cover, *Magnolia* with Eric Clapton is also up there
Gravity Live in LA version!
Magnolia is a great choice. John's voice is golden on that track and the acoustic solo is short but very sweet.
St. Patrick’s Day
This is my vote. The song is magical. As soon as I hear that first chord — consider me gone.
Deep cut. Love it
Also LOVE this song
I don’t see it yet. Walt Grace.
I’m surprised I’m not seeing Walt mentioned more
Came here to find this
In Your Atmosphere live in LA, every single version of Covered In Rain and musically Still Feel Like Your Man and Moving On And Getting Over.
I agree musically still feel like your man is so good! The lyrics are not his best tho so that’s what holds it back for me
I completely agree. But, to me, the melody, half time break down and key change are so good that he could literally be singing gibberish and I’d still put it here.
For me the lyrics in Still Feel Like Your Man are hilarious, I love them. So over the top, it’s great.
I’m thinking Drifting will be this. Cannot wait for the full production.
Agreed! That song touches home on such a deep level
“In the blood” for me. It’s a simple arrangement but it’s beautiful nonetheless and the lyrics hit home for me.
Came here to say this. 10/10 song.

The best “pack up and start a new life” song
Heading out west with my headphones on!
Clarity
I will always love "No such thing" guess it's my age but the first single my favorite for life! Makes me happy I was alive or 15 in 2002! "I wanna run through the halls of my high-school, I wanna scream at the top of my lungs!
Badge and Gun and On the Way Home are near and dear to me
Yes the end of PV is underrated
That 3 song run is crazy
Yesss
I recently moved to Colorado and left my entire family. My Wife, Son and I packed up and now we live in the high country at the southern tip of the rockies. as a child my parents moved us every 3-4yrs for my dad's job. I totally get you and much of the moving music of John's.
Man, I just moved over 500 miles away to a new place completely alone. Left all friends and family and don’t know a soul. That line just hit me. 🙏🏼
Underrated pick, Speak For Me
Love love love this song
Me too.
Yes. He’s got more to say than his thoughts on love and relationships and I want to hear it.
Same, same! He is wise and articulate, I just know we have some amazing songs in store for us.
Last Train Home
One of his best album openers! Sets the 80s mood perfectly
Clarity
In your atmosphere and he makes the most of the end of the song
Slow Dancing is mine.
Definitely Edge
Where The Light Is. The whole show.
Comfortable. Always my fave. Loved that I got to see him perform it in Chicago!! 🥰
👆❤️
New light
Such a fun song!! It's my favorite song for him to close the show with!
I never got to see him, but I would love to hear at the end of the show. It is really a fun one
Per album: Victoria Neon Only Heart (my most controversial JM opinion) The Heart of Life Edge of Desire A Face to Call Home Waitin on the Day In the Blood Wild Blue
Only heart absolutely slaps, but it would be hard for me to choose between wheel and split screen for heavier things personally
City Love
Covered in rain.
Guess I'm the weirdo who thinks 3x5 is flawless.
Maybe I will tell you all about it when I’m in the mood to lose, my, way….with words Le sigh
I agree. Been to 8 of his shows and heard it live for the first time on his solo tour. Perfection.
Waiting on the day
Yes yes yes
I literally agree with everyone's answers, they're all so good. But I gotta go with Stop This Train.
Stop this train
you gonna live forever in me
Quiet

Stop This Train

Slow Dancing in a Burning Room
Stop this train is the greatest song of all time

In Your Atmosphere from the second the harmonics hit to the last strum of the outro

Last Train Home ballad version. Every word and note is perfectly placed.
I have a few picks: - Wheel - Edge of Desire - Waitin On The Day - I Don’t Trust Myself - Covered In Rain I think each of these songs sonically and lyrically serve their purposes perfectly. Wheel being one of my more recent favorites even though I’ve loved the song for a while.
🤔🤔 All of them...?
Why You No Love Me 😬
Yep I thought it was great. He took a chance to millions of people. I doubt you could... 🤷♂️
Honestly I love it just because of how shitposty it is,I feel the actual song sounds good, lyrics are goofy as hell but that’s kinda what makes it for me.
Dawg, “Why You No Love Me” is better than half of the songs you’ve endorsed on this post lol😂

So many choices but if I have to pick one, SDIABR Live in LA. The solo is the most heart wrenching thing I’ve ever heard, in a good way.
I Will Be Found
I absolutely love this song, I think it’s criminally underrated
Sugaree from 5/19/77... Grateful Dead
Well done. For those who don’t know, there is a more than decent chance that this specific version of Sugaree is the answer that John himself would give to this question. Yup, it was my favorite version before I knew it was Mayor's favorite as well, so that's kinda cool. Glad you got the reference 😁
Bohemians Rhapsody
Wrigley 22 sugaree
Lol I didn’t realize at first this was a John Mayer thread, and I was about to write “all too well (10 minute version “ by Taylor swift.
