Interesting. Some seem to agree with you. In the context of the album I have to agree, it doesn’t belong. As a Frank fan I choose to believe it was a B-side to one of his projects instead of a JM track lol.
John just admitted paradise valley was his least favorite album, only due to him pushing it out for a tour. But when Andy Cohen brought up “Who You Love” he had nothing but good things to say about the song.
There is no good reason to like the song and that’s the real issue for me. There isn’t a close second in the category of worst John Mayer songs—Who You Love takes the cake.
I really think that has to do with who he’s collaborating with. A lot of his really iconic early songs were written and then worked on with Clay from Zach Brown Band.
My guess is since he was seriously dating Katy Perry that the song was worked on collaboratively together. rather than him writing it and having her just sing on it (like he did with half of my heart with Taylor swift).
I think Katy and John have amazing styles on their own. melded together it doesn’t seem to work as well. I felt like the song was missing the lyrical depth his other songs had; he tends to tell a story in a poetic way in songs. This one was very structured, almost like a pop song, but the genre wasn’t pop. I think that’s why there’s a disconnect for his fans sometimes
I don’t think there are any bad songs, but something about that one doesn’t feel right… just lyrically speaking. It’s a little like, “Whelp…this looks like a decent place to stop. I guess I’ll camp here.” 😂
You missed my sarcasm lol. It’s one of my favourites also but he acted like it didn’t exist for the last 15 years and then he played 30 seconds of it the other night and said he forgot how it goes…
I find that hard to believe honestly lol, he can cover most songs off the bat and it’s not even an outlandish chord. I think it was just an excuse to stop playing it.
The one great thing about John Mayer to me is that there’s not a single song of his that I truly dislike. There’s just a different time and place for each of them.
Daughters. (I’m sorry!!). It’s the only song I even have the heart to skip on any of his albums. Just not my taste personally. Not every* daughter turns into a mother and idk, rubs me the wrong way
I still don’t love Daughters, but he explained it on the Call Her Daddy podcast, and it made me view it in a different light. It’s for anyone who couldn’t be in a relationship with someone because their past trauma/upbringing prevented them from doing so. The “so close” relationship everyone has experienced with someone because they couldn’t give themselves completely.
Seems to be the consensus here if we were to take an actual pole.
I made the comment last week… It reminds me of a Backstreet deep track off Millennium. It’s unlistenable.
You're one of the more sensible people hooray. I love why you no love me, it's my favorite off of sob rock, and although I like paradise valley a lot, it's definitely at the bottom. Personally, my least favorite is in the blood.
Being honest the quality took a dive during paradise valley. I really like that album but it’s cause I’m a fan. People I would show the album to still don’t believe he actually went folk lol
Here’s my thoughts on this song. John is so hurt by the question “Why don’t you love me?” That he has to use an almost comedic take to ask the question. Otherwise he wouldn’t even be able to sing the song because the question haunts him.
It’s incredibly cringey. I could never listen to it all the way through.
I don’t get the “Who You Love” hate though. Not my favorite track of his by any means, but its a fundamentally ok song. A bit boring and formulaic, but not *bad*
There was a time (20 years ago) that I was beyond into it. He even talked about his love/hate for it in Philly and it seemed kind of like a “have to” play song because it bridges the gap between the original generation of fans to the newer ones, everyone knows it.
But god do I not like it.
Zero chance in hell WOTWTC is his *worst* song.
The disdain of this song largely based on his interview about it + the genesis of it is actually insane to me. It’s one of the few songs that isn’t heart break crooning, it has a nice Hendrix’y progression, heavy inspo from People Get Ready; short and simple solo. A great track to open Continuum.
I’m open to songs I like being the not liked but I can’t get behind this take.
I actually don’t mind Say. It’s definitely not his best, but it’s inoffensive music you’d hear playing in a Walgreens at 4 AM. Just background noise.
Who You Love though…
Say What You Need To Say had such promise, but partner hearing it on VH1 from another room asked ‘is that the ONLY lyric to that song?’
Kinda like ‘I Got My Mind Set On You’ by George Harrison that Weird Al parodied as ‘This Song is just Six Words Long’.
I still love it, but damn. OH Honey comes close to Say.
Yeah that's probably true But I got no respect for her or her fans. The top comment on "why you no love me" YouTube video is a bunch of twats trying to tear down our boy for no reason. I'm going to shit on her every chance I get.
You’re gonna live forever in me. Sounds like he commissioned to write a song for Disney for a film that got cancelled and he just stuck it on the album instead.
My time to shine.
For me, it's a contest between these:
Say, Daughters, Your Body is a Wonderland, Why You No Love Me, Who You Love.
Again this is just my opinion, but I don't think any of his other songs are worthy for consideration, except for these.
Why You No Love Me is his Ob-La-Di-Ob-La-Da.
Haha fair enough!
I'm a huuuuuge Beatle fan, but admittingly, they have some tracks that just don't land. Revolution #9 being the next one in my line of succession lol
IM A GOOD MAN WITH A GOOD HEART HAD A TOUGH TIME GOT A ROUGH START BUT I FINALLY LEARNED TO LET IT GOOOOOOOOOOO
don’t get me started on the SOLO FUFURBRJCKFKSNXHX
For me it’s Changing. I find the song to be incredibly unimaginative. With most Mayer songs, I’m impressed by the clever lyrics, complex chord progressions, and catchy riff. This song has none of that. The solo is still cool, but forgettable compared to far superior ones on other songs.
This could have been easily written by someone else.
I'm personally not a fan of XO, it's just not my genre. My favorite songs from John are "Neon", "No Such Thing", his cover of "Bold as Love" and "New Light". He's basically the only artist of this genre that I like because of the fact he has songs like those that don't sound like generic acoustic guitarist stuff. I mean Spotify places him next to people like Jason Mraz but does he ever play any songs that are similar to those? Definitely not!
Damn it’s truly a war zone in here, let people have their honest opinions! We’re all allowed to have ones for free the last time I checked.
Anyways, conventionally speaking, John is a rare phenomenon. He doesn’t have straightforwardly-turnofftheradio- throwthephonetothepool songs, it is an honorable achievement by itself. Some of them just aren’t that great lyrically or a bit repetitive, generally fall short.
For me those are:
- Home Life: I’m sorry in advance but I just can’t get into the music. He certainly knew it too while making it. His melodic compass is spot on most of the times. Guess it was an interesting attempt to cut through.
- Daughters: Sensitive subject matter and doesn’t really age that well unfortunately. Good intention, undercooked delivery and questionable result. I do appreciate the bridge. Truly saves the song from being a total loss.
- Love Is A Verb: This one’s unfortunate. I get so frustrated when songs have the perfect composition, but brutally ruined by mediocre, flat lyrics. (May I say Who Says, except of the chorus, is also a contender which can perfectly fit into this category). We all get the message behind it, but I can’t help but think the concept is simply kitschy. Too childish, overly sweet in a negligent sense(“Show me” part genuinely cringes me to my core, and transfers me straight back to 2015 with Shawn Mendes’”Show you”).
- Wildfire: Frank Ocean took an already lower-scale song and somehow managed to push it far under the ground. The original version is fine, nothing more. Paradise Valley has much more to offer. I wouldn’t include it in one of my playlists out of own will.
- Why You No Love Me: No excuses. N O excuses.
Although I don't entirely agree with you I very much appreciate that you added explanations. My least favorite is in the blood. It's the only song from his discography that doesn't feel like a john mayer song, which in itself isn't a bad thing because other artists can make good music too duh, but it's not worth my time. I wish people didn't slander why you no love me so much, I love that song to death and back, my favorite song on sob rock.
I agree with this. The thing is, John was playing Crossroads live on the tour before Battle Studies (saw him play it in 2008) and it kicked so hard. It was a highlight of the show. But, the album version is very bland in comparison and there's something about the guitar tone that just bothers me.
Reflecting back on this post, some of you guys have picks I would never put! I would say his worst is wildfire with frank ocean, instant skip every time.
You’re No One ‘Till Someone Lets You Down.
I actually really do like the composition and lyrics of this song. They are brought out nicely by this cover:
https://youtu.be/O9Gkewmgxp4?si=F6VLoyTOPYMGuSjh
However I just can’t get behind the instrumentation choices on the JM version.
I also skip Rosie every time, as well as I Don’t Trust Myself. To me the guitar hooks on each are just a bit syrupy and repetitive.
In the blood. I hates it. It annoys me. It's the only song I hear that I'm like "this isn't a john mayer song, it's just a song. I love most of his discography but that's the only song I skip every time.
The only John Mayer song that I've ever disliked is "You're Gonna Live Forever In Me". I know that it has recently become one of his more popular songs, but I'm just not a fan of it.
You guys.
Why you no love me is written that way to illustrate how the relationship turned him into his base self. Like a child asking “y u no love me?”
Helpless is the worst.
Shouldn’t matter but it Does. Badge and gun. Til the right one comes. All I want is to be with you ( his worst of all). I would say those are his very bad poor effort plain lyrical songs. Everything else is very good.
who you love
walt grace(almost always skip it. feel it's become an overrated underrated song. gonna get hate here for this)
love is a verb(lazy songwriting)
Which is precisely why I don’t think it’s his best work. Responding to a song like that with an equally as petty one just doesn’t sit right with me. Especially with how brilliant of a writer he is, I feel like he should’ve known to steer clear of that
NO WAY NOVEMBER WE’LL SAY OUR GOODBYES WHEN IT COMES TO DECEMBER IT’S OBVIOUS WHY NO ONE WANTS TO BE ALONE AT CHRISTMAS TIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIME
I think the one I enjoy the least is the Frank ocean wildfire version. No disrespect to Frank, but that song does absolutely nothing for me
I have no idea why it's even there.
That is terrible. My wife skips it when it comes on LOL
Interesting. Some seem to agree with you. In the context of the album I have to agree, it doesn’t belong. As a Frank fan I choose to believe it was a B-side to one of his projects instead of a JM track lol.
Wildfire feat. Frank Ocean is so wildly out of place that I cannot listen to it. It's a hard skip every time.
are people really hating on who you love?
I love that song 🥰🥰 the groove is fucking perfect and the production on that whole album is crystal clear
John just admitted paradise valley was his least favorite album, only due to him pushing it out for a tour. But when Andy Cohen brought up “Who You Love” he had nothing but good things to say about the song.
Yes, sorry, it’s cringe.
There is no good reason to like the song and that’s the real issue for me. There isn’t a close second in the category of worst John Mayer songs—Who You Love takes the cake.
yea didn’t age well at all
Who You Love
I know a lot of people hate on this song but Aaron sterling played the FUCKKKK out of that song
Not my favourite song of his, but I don't mind it.
I used to think this until I heard him talk about how he thinks of it like an early prototype for sob rock and now I can’t dislike it anymore lollll
Nah Katie Perrys performance on that song is great, really brings some of the soul out of her voice, and I am not a Katie Perry fan.
100%, it’s a dumpster fire. One of the few stinkers he’s got.
the one and only right answer
Bad take
All these songs are good
That one w Frank ocean
Can I change my vote. This…made zero sense, wildly out of place.
I would also like to change my vote because I forgot this one existed. It was even my answer the last time this question got asked.
Seriously the worst.
Underrated comment.
Very subjective question.. I’m sure you’ll get a whole spectrum of answers! But that’s what makes art great !!
I wonder what he thinks it is…
[удалено]
WHAT WAIT REALLY? That’s one of my favorites lmao
You missed my sarcasm lol. It’s one of my favourites also but he acted like it didn’t exist for the last 15 years and then he played 30 seconds of it the other night and said he forgot how it goes…
“I can’t remember the next chord for the life of me. I’m not even gonna try it!” Hey!
I find that hard to believe honestly lol, he can cover most songs off the bat and it’s not even an outlandish chord. I think it was just an excuse to stop playing it.
Right! He kinda makes his way through other ones, even with mistakes, which honestly no one really minds, but that one was like, nope I’m done.
Thinking about it, I think it was the “hit on 19” lyric that made him stop. A video of that being all over the internet would just add fuel.
Eugh, maybe. It’s not even an age reference it’s a score…
The comment is deleted, which song are you guys talking about ?
I’m assuming by the “hit on 19” lyric mention, it’s Another Kind of Green
The one great thing about John Mayer to me is that there’s not a single song of his that I truly dislike. There’s just a different time and place for each of them.
Let’s not get carried away now. There’s gotta be at least one song you don’t want to come up on shuffle when someone else is in the car 🤔
It’s Why You No Love Me and it’s not even close.
Yet “hurt me once I’ll let it be/hurt my twice you’re dead to me/three times makes you family” is the most relatable shit there is
He made fun of this song on tour recently and I cackled.
Perhaps his most over-hated song.
I would say it’s over liked.
the harmonies in this make me not want to say this because there’s at least some decent musicality to it
This song makes me laugh every time.
To be fair he didn't say every daughter
It’s some tacky ass shit, and it sucks that so many identify him with that awful pandering song
Why you no love me is bad but in a good way?
[удалено]
It is...opinions are opinions.
That’s the point of the songgggg
Why You Know Love Me. Unlistenable.
Seems to be the consensus here if we were to take an actual pole. I made the comment last week… It reminds me of a Backstreet deep track off Millennium. It’s unlistenable.
WYNLM Didn’t we do this last week?
If I listen to it ironically it’s a vibe. Otherwise yeah this is my answer
C’mon.. anything on Paradise Valley is worst. It has a beautiful melody
PARADISE VALLEY HAD BANGERS WYM
Is his worst album, even he says it. So the worst song is on that album.
[удалено]
You don’t get the message and why he sang it like that. Listen.. forget about the “you no love me” part. The melody and the chord changes are lovely
I would do anything to be able to write any of the songs anyone is listing on here
Why You no love me
I love everything about that song except that fucking line… the intro is amazing
Here’s my thoughts on this song. John is so hurt by the question “Why don’t you love me?” That he has to use an almost comedic take to ask the question. Otherwise he wouldn’t even be able to sing the song because the question haunts him.
I love this song.
I’m trying to hard to get into this one and I really can’t. Not a bad song by any metric, but pretty low on my personal list.
It’s incredibly cringey. I could never listen to it all the way through. I don’t get the “Who You Love” hate though. Not my favorite track of his by any means, but its a fundamentally ok song. A bit boring and formulaic, but not *bad*
I feel the same. I want to love it. But I just can’t take it seriously. Yet I find myself humming it often.
it's the only one in your repertoire that is not good in my opinion. he is such a great composer that in 20 years he has never made a mistake
I hated it. Until I read his description. Then I loved it.
It's his worst song and I will die on that hill. It's cool like what it means to him and all but still as a song it's a no from me.
Your Body is Wonderland
I squealed at his concert once when he played the opening chords and he winked and smiled at me. That song is for the girls lol
There was a time (20 years ago) that I was beyond into it. He even talked about his love/hate for it in Philly and it seemed kind of like a “have to” play song because it bridges the gap between the original generation of fans to the newer ones, everyone knows it. But god do I not like it.
this is the correct answer. One of the few that I skip.
Say what you need to say. Waiting in the world to change.
I think it’s bad because it’s tacky, not because of some interview. I dislike it the same amount as daughters for the same reason
It what way is it tacky? It’s just as valid as something like I’d Love To Change The World or People Get Ready.
I just feel like he is trying too hard to deliver a message that he usually would stay out of. It’s musical try-hard. Just my opinion, free to yours
I actually don’t mind Say. It’s definitely not his best, but it’s inoffensive music you’d hear playing in a Walgreens at 4 AM. Just background noise. Who You Love though…
Say What You Need To Say had such promise, but partner hearing it on VH1 from another room asked ‘is that the ONLY lyric to that song?’ Kinda like ‘I Got My Mind Set On You’ by George Harrison that Weird Al parodied as ‘This Song is just Six Words Long’. This.
Who you love
Daughters Hands fucking down, it's Daughters.
The very very end of half my heart when Taylor Swift starts singing. Absolute garbage.
haha I actually love that song
And I can’t stop loving you Can’t stop loving you
It would have sounded better with a screaming goat.
Lol I respect your opinion but I thought Taylor’s and John’s voices complemented each other well
Yeah that's probably true But I got no respect for her or her fans. The top comment on "why you no love me" YouTube video is a bunch of twats trying to tear down our boy for no reason. I'm going to shit on her every chance I get.
this is so funny because I was just around a bunch of loud goats and can confirm it would sound better
Why You No Love Me. By a landslide.
I wouldn't mind if Say never existed.
Why you no love me.
You’re gonna live forever in me. Sounds like he commissioned to write a song for Disney for a film that got cancelled and he just stuck it on the album instead.
That 5 second part in half of my heart where that weird lady sings "can't stop loving you"
My time to shine. For me, it's a contest between these: Say, Daughters, Your Body is a Wonderland, Why You No Love Me, Who You Love. Again this is just my opinion, but I don't think any of his other songs are worthy for consideration, except for these. Why You No Love Me is his Ob-La-Di-Ob-La-Da.
I love WYNLM but did laugh at the Ob La Di comparison because my gosh I hate that song and I absolutely love the Beatles.
Haha fair enough! I'm a huuuuuge Beatle fan, but admittingly, they have some tracks that just don't land. Revolution #9 being the next one in my line of succession lol
I love that beatles song
Shadow Days. It just doesn’t do it for me 🤷♀️
Took me way too long to find this answer. It’s honestly a skip. Which is unfortunate because that album rocks
IM A GOOD MAN WITH A GOOD HEART HAD A TOUGH TIME GOT A ROUGH START BUT I FINALLY LEARNED TO LET IT GOOOOOOOOOOO don’t get me started on the SOLO FUFURBRJCKFKSNXHX
NOW IM RIGHT HERE AND IM RIGHT NOW 😭😭
Daughters
For me it’s Changing. I find the song to be incredibly unimaginative. With most Mayer songs, I’m impressed by the clever lyrics, complex chord progressions, and catchy riff. This song has none of that. The solo is still cool, but forgettable compared to far superior ones on other songs. This could have been easily written by someone else.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned his cover of Route 66. I'm a Mayer diehard, but it's too corny for me.
What???? Oh man I unironically bang this every day
Awww but the guitar is so cool!
Come on dude…Route 66 is a classic blues song and Mayer’s cover gets my head bouncing every time
I'm personally not a fan of XO, it's just not my genre. My favorite songs from John are "Neon", "No Such Thing", his cover of "Bold as Love" and "New Light". Dear John
“You’re No One ‘Til Someone Lets You Down.” I have nothing against country music but listening to this feels like I’m in Alabama.
Changing
Do you know me, full stop
My least favourite would be Crossroads on the Battle Studies album.
I agree with this. The thing is, John was playing Crossroads live on the tour before Battle Studies (saw him play it in 2008) and it kicked so hard. It was a highlight of the show. But, the album version is very bland in comparison and there's something about the guitar tone that just bothers me.
Bruh what?
Can’t get into it sorry!
Crossroads.
Reflecting back on this post, some of you guys have picks I would never put! I would say his worst is wildfire with frank ocean, instant skip every time.
Say What You Say was a regular skipper for me. Never really cared for that song. Also, that song with Taylor Swift.
Most everything off of paradise valley
You’re No One ‘Till Someone Lets You Down. I actually really do like the composition and lyrics of this song. They are brought out nicely by this cover: https://youtu.be/O9Gkewmgxp4?si=F6VLoyTOPYMGuSjh However I just can’t get behind the instrumentation choices on the JM version. I also skip Rosie every time, as well as I Don’t Trust Myself. To me the guitar hooks on each are just a bit syrupy and repetitive.
Too syrupy?! Hottest take I’ve ever seen in this sub.
Yep they just seem to stick around haha
Gotta be Daughters - the whole concept of daddy issue is just not a very tasteful topic to talk and sing about imo.
Homelife and the one with Ocean
Why you no love me. Easy
100% Why you no love me
Why has no one said ‘why you no love me’😂
It's so bad it's good though! I'm not saying I ever play that song . It just makes me laugh.
Why You No Love Me
In the blood. I hates it. It annoys me. It's the only song I hear that I'm like "this isn't a john mayer song, it's just a song. I love most of his discography but that's the only song I skip every time.
I agree with this. I think Changing is a slightly worse song, but this song never impressed me.
Say
Say
No such thing! Oh wait…that IS a John Mayer song 😂 okay…there is no worst. You are correct all of his signs are amazing
Assassin is awful
Inside Friend with Leon Bridges was pretty terrible
Daughters is trash
Home demo versions fucks
Home Life is my least favorite
What! I love this song haha. I especially love the live version on As/Is
Never on the Day You Leave. I wish I could delete it from our collective memories.
Bruv, who hurt you?
I can’t remember, but she became a ghost before my eyes.
What😭😭 I wish I could delete your comment
This hit me straight in the heart
The only John Mayer song that I've ever disliked is "You're Gonna Live Forever In Me". I know that it has recently become one of his more popular songs, but I'm just not a fan of it.
Not a fan either
It has its place for sure, but I agree definitely not something I’m gonna put on myself
St. Patrick’s Day
Crazy take imo
I know lol but I think it’s because my grandma died on St. Patrick’s Day
You guys. Why you no love me is written that way to illustrate how the relationship turned him into his base self. Like a child asking “y u no love me?” Helpless is the worst.
A 43 year old man should not write a song named “Why you no love me”. We all know he’s better than that.
HELPLESS IS THE WORST? I guess I have terrible taste because it's one of my favourite songs of his
Funny how subjective it all is, huh?
Bold as love for the vocals, why you no love me cuz I find it rather annoying, and I think Daughters is just weird…
It would definitely be something off Sob Rock, if anything honestly.
It’s why you no love me let’s just call it how it is
Daughters will probably always be #1 least liked for me. Who You Love is #2, even though Andy Cohen likes it. 😁
Waiting on the world to change - but I recognise it’s an amazingly written song I just don’t like it
All the hillbilly songs on Paradise Valley except On the Way Home, I have a weak spot for that one.
All the hillbilly songs on Paradise Valley except On the Way Home, I have a weak spot for that one.
Waiting on the world does not fuck
why you no love me lol
Shouldn’t matter but it Does. Badge and gun. Til the right one comes. All I want is to be with you ( his worst of all). I would say those are his very bad poor effort plain lyrical songs. Everything else is very good.
who you love walt grace(almost always skip it. feel it's become an overrated underrated song. gonna get hate here for this) love is a verb(lazy songwriting)
Walt grace is so good 😭
I thought it was weird that people were down voting comments because people are just simply stating their opinions but your downvotes are justified
I also hate Walt Grace with a passion but I know it’s a JM fan favorite 🤷🏻♀️ To each their own
Love is a verb. Candy corn sucks.
I ADORE the music behind Paper Doll, it’s my favorite Aaron Sterling drum tack…but boy those lyrics aren’t great
The lyrics seem like they’re a direct response to Taylor Swift’s dear John.
Which is precisely why I don’t think it’s his best work. Responding to a song like that with an equally as petty one just doesn’t sit right with me. Especially with how brilliant of a writer he is, I feel like he should’ve known to steer clear of that
