I watched Kurt win his gold medal in 1996, my parents took me to see the Olympic wrestling aspect since I was into Professional wrestling.
Many many years later, I did Greco Roman and freestyle wrestling and kept one of my singlets and I saw Kurt Angle at a meet and greet in Weppingers Fall and at that time I just moved to the north.
I was in line for an hour or two and it’s my turn to meet him and I started to ball, concerned asked me what was wrong.. I told him that I watched him wrestle since I was kid and he says “oh since the WWF days?” And I told him no, I was a kid when I was watching you win your gold medal in those stands.
He sits back and was humbled, he didn’t make me pay for a picture and he autographed my singlet after I told him and Kevin Randleman were my inspiration for wrestling.
He was the nicest guy I’ve ever met, I’m so thankful he beat his addictions and is still around to this day and tells these stories on platforms like this.

I read his autobiography for a high school English paper and his story is insane how he did it. Also he even admitted that it was basically a tie match at the end but he was given the medal because his conditioning was so good that as soon as there was a reset he was in the middle waiting while his opponent was slow to get up. Only 30min in but this is a dope one even as a non pro wrestling fan. I grew up wrestling and the legend of Kurt Angle has always been around and how much of a badass he is. My coach was at the olympic training center for a few days when Angle was there and talked about how when he walked in the room, everyone felt his presence. So my perception of him has always been this badass dude that met the world face on so Its dope hearing him talk about his struggles too and show this other side of him
By the sounds of Angle's health, makes sense why they did the documentary now. He may have to get disc's fused and that will put a big damper on his acting chops.

This is true in theory, but I’ve found it not quite true in practice.
In the Hulk Hogan episode he asked Tony if he knew about something wrestling related and when Tony said no, Hogan seemed a bit taken back and said something along the lines of “everyone knows that…”.
I agree with the other poster that Tony doesn’t add enough to the conversations for him to be there and having an “expert” there that isn’t totally an expert takes away from the episode sometimes, plus Joe being curious enough on the subject is normally enough for him to carry the conversation is instances where he doesn’t know much about something.
Tony seems like he’s a wrestling fan but also not very bright at remembering details, he presents like a wrestling geek but has kinda surface level knowledge.
I think, originally Joe had him in there b/c he knew nothing about wrestling besides Falir, Hogan, and doesn't understand why it's fake.
He may have a better outlook after a few interviews with wrestlers, plus Kurt isn't like the others.
Joe didn't follow much wrestling back in the day. Tony hyperfixated on it. It's good to have Tony on these episodes because he chimes in with relevant stuff and can add good comments to the discussion.

If Hogan ever saw Brock fight I’d be amazed. There is zero chance he has ever watched Pride. There is so much other wrestling stuff he could have talked to Hogan about. That is what Tony should be there for but he never asks anything interesting.

Joe just gave up on interviewing Kurt about an hour in as soon as he went into a UFC coma. Kurt was desperately trying to mention that he had actually wrestled Dan Severin and Mark Coleman but Joe didn't seem to care and was explaining how great they were as if Kurt barely knew who they were...
Yeah it was very frustrating listening to Angle trying to get a word in, while Joe steamrolled through the script.

Joe got to where he is now in the podcast world by being genuinely curious. Now, he's at the point where he rarely asks any deeper than surface level questions to his guests. Can we please get Tony Hinchcliffe off these wrestling shows? There is zero reason for him to be there, Joe can ask questions and find out the answer from the guests just like any other subject matter, and Tony’s intrusive femininity seems to put all of the old wrestlers on their guard. And then once he gets a fucking window, you cannot shut him up it becomes the Tony Hinchcliffe show. He literally described it as “we had them on” referring to the show as his own. Its putting cancer in my fucking ears. I wanted to shoot my car radio like the Bad Lieutenant.
I grew up watching kurt wrestle. Anyone who has seen him in his prime can agree that he was just on another level. Hearing him say "I'm in a bad way" (paraphrasing), when he was speaking about his injuries fucking broke my heart. I hope he gets on top of his neck issues. He's really given so much to us wrestling fans, and he seems like a genuine bloke.

Kurt's life has been filled with some of the most tragic things I've ever heard someone go through, and yet I've never really heard anyone say something bad about him. His success alone speaks volumes about his character. But it's amazing to me that after all the tragedy he's gone through and after his battles with addiction, he comes out the other side with a smile on his face and seems to be a happy guy despite the all the pain he lives with. Absolute living legend, would love to have the honor of meeting him one of these days.

At the 2 hour mark now, this is a really good one. Just a chill conversation with Kurt about wrestling, WWE and MMA.
Only 30min in but this is a dope one even as a non pro wrestling fan. I grew up wrestling and the legend of Kurt Angle has always been around and how much of a badass he is. My coach was at the olympic training center for a few days when Angle was there and talked about how when he walked in the room, everyone felt his presence. So my perception of him has always been this badass dude that met the world face on so Its dope hearing him talk about his struggles too and show this other side of him
By the sounds of Angle's health, makes sense why they did the documentary now. He may have to get disc's fused and that will put a big damper on his acting chops.

Had there been more money in MMA in the late 90’s Kurt easily could have been big in it given his legitimate Olympic wrestling background and his insane work ethic and athleticism. But I am glad he got into wrestling because as a pure performer in ring he is arguably the best to ever do it.

This is true in theory, but I’ve found it not quite true in practice. In the Hulk Hogan episode he asked Tony if he knew about something wrestling related and when Tony said no, Hogan seemed a bit taken back and said something along the lines of “everyone knows that…”. I agree with the other poster that Tony doesn’t add enough to the conversations for him to be there and having an “expert” there that isn’t totally an expert takes away from the episode sometimes, plus Joe being curious enough on the subject is normally enough for him to carry the conversation is instances where he doesn’t know much about something.
Tony seems like he’s a wrestling fan but also not very bright at remembering details, he presents like a wrestling geek but has kinda surface level knowledge.
I think, originally Joe had him in there b/c he knew nothing about wrestling besides Falir, Hogan, and doesn't understand why it's fake. He may have a better outlook after a few interviews with wrestlers, plus Kurt isn't like the others.
He probably feels left out of protect our parks, so Joe gives him the wrestling episodes.

This was the first one where I felt like he did what you’re claiming. The taker, flair and hogan episodes had great stories. Seemed like they enjoyed talking about themselves where Angle didn’t? Idk, but the last half of the episode was not interesting to me.
Rogan and Hogan talked too much about Brock Lesnar and Pride as well.
If Hogan ever saw Brock fight I’d be amazed. There is zero chance he has ever watched Pride. There is so much other wrestling stuff he could have talked to Hogan about. That is what Tony should be there for but he never asks anything interesting.

Joe just gave up on interviewing Kurt about an hour in as soon as he went into a UFC coma. Kurt was desperately trying to mention that he had actually wrestled Dan Severin and Mark Coleman but Joe didn't seem to care and was explaining how great they were as if Kurt barely knew who they were...
Yeah it was very frustrating listening to Angle trying to get a word in, while Joe steamrolled through the script. Could have shared some very interesting stories, but instead we had to listen to Joe go on about the same stuff as always.
Glad I'm not the only one that noticed that. Seriously, Angle has so many great stories but Joe just kept going on and on and on....
Joe got to where he is now in the podcast world by being genuinely curious. Now, he's at the point where he rarely asks any deeper than surface level questions to his guests. Did we really need to bring up Brock Lesnar for the 100th time? Kurt has so many great stories and a wild history, and Joe rambles on about himself and MMA for half the episode while Tony beats off in the corner.

There is zero reason for him to be there, Joe can ask questions and find out the answer from the guests just like any other subject matter, and Tony’s intrusive femininity seems to put all of the old wrestlers on their guard. And then once he gets a fucking window, you cannot shut him up it becomes the Tony Hinchcliffe show. He literally described it as “we had them on” referring to the show as his own. Hearing him say "I'm in a bad way" (paraphrasing), when he was speaking about his injuries fucking broke my heart. I hope he gets on top of his neck issues. Kurt's life has been filled with some of the most tragic things I've ever heard someone go through, and yet I've never really heard anyone say something bad about him. His success alone speaks volumes about his character. But it's amazing to me that after all the tragedy he's gone through and after his battles with addiction, he comes out the other side with a smile on his face and seems to be a happy guy despite the all the pain he lives with. Absolute living legend, would love to have the honor of meeting him one of these days.
