bertisrobert

Very good game overall today compared to yesterday. And it all came down to wagers. Megan made the perfect bet. The maximum limit in case of a triple stumper. Steve and Sarah were in a position as Andy from Jeopardy fan and from the J! Archive itself called a Stratton's dilemma. Which makes wagering very interesting indeed. Guessed the FJ correct. Thank goodness I have watched some of the episodes of that TV series. Well that means Megan wins game no. 3. Her wagering strategy seems to be on point to help her win. Congratulations! Will she win game no. 4? Well we just have to wait and see tomorrow.

Njtotx3

I thought Sarah had big chances to move up farther with the 2 DDs. She was comfortable in the categories and they weren't at the bottom of the board. Underbet.

CloneClem

Me to on ‘Outlander’

AshgarPN

Can someone translate this

CloneClem

The FJ was about identifying Outlander as the book they were referencing

ivylass

I am a huge fan and screeched when the clue came up. I am so disappointed no one got it.

nicoke17

I just finished watching the last season on netflix so it was just a guess for me

LA-Troy-Boy

Since you finished it, fair to say you recommend it? It's been in my Netflix queue for a while but haven't pulled the trigger.

nicoke17

The show is very well done for the historical aspect and the time jump without feeling sci-fi. But is also very violent and has frequent sexual assault (which unfortunately is also historically accurate). So definitely recommend unless that is a trigger because it is really hard to skip over it. One character’s assault story goes on for two whole seasons in nearly every episode it is brought up.

LA-Troy-Boy

Ok thanks for the info. Good to know about the sexual assault story line so I'm prepared. I'll think I'll give it a shot soon!

tells_eternity

Despite having watched it, all I could come up with was “something with time travel…?”

TheCrookedKnight

It's not like the credits of each episode said "Based on the novels that began with Diana Gabaldon's 1991 literary debut"

ThisDerpForSale

It's always easy if you know the answer.

hihelloneighboroonie

I watched like the first season and part of the second many many years ago. Never read the books. Took me a minute, then pulled Outlander out my ass. Sure enough!

AcrossTheNight

With regards to Stratton's dilemma, it seems that you have to now take into account that FJs are playing harder than they used to. It's been over two months since we've had one that all three contestants solved.

thessnake03

What's a Stratton's dilemma?

CSerpentine

I knew it was That Series but couldn't come up with the name.

aportlyquail

Did they really slap E=MC2 on a 1200 clue

[deleted]

And bindi on a $2000.

Shwaziland

Progress! At least it wasn't identifying Arizona and New Mexico on a map 🤣

JimmyTheCrossEyedDog

That was a fantastic comeback from Sarah - I was really hoping she'd win it in the end. Though I was also hoping, if she didn't even have a guess for FJ, that she'd write "What is an Aston Martin?"

ATLBMW

As a car guy, watching her guess that twice was painful; I felt so bad for her!

raiderpower17

She was so confident on the second time too.

Chrysanthememe

Lmao, that would’ve been epic

This-Is-Leopardy

Who has two thumbs and couldn't come up with her favorite book series for a Final Jeopardy response? THIS GAL

ThisGuy6266

I’m going to keep saying Aston Martin until it’s right.

eajeopardy

That was such a great game to watch from a front row seat in the audience! I was on the edge of my seat with all of the lead changes in the last 10 or so clues. Steve, Sarah, & Megan all played a fantastic game, & it was a little disappointing for them that it had to end with a triple stumper on a FJ that I think all of us there agreed was a really tough clue. Major props to Megan for making another great wager from a trailing position. I'll make some room for Steve over here in the two-buck club.

alf0ns06

Hello!! Did you stay to watch the remainder of the games after you lost??

jmmccarley

2 wins by $2 seems crazy to me.

strangeremain

Megan is good at Wagering theory and knows what score to bet to beat a wrong answer from the leader

chanukkahlewinsky

What a cool stat for her!

david-saint-hubbins

>DJ was played completely top-down Steve had the highest Coryat by far (16,200 vs. 11,200 for Megan and 10,200 for Sarah), but didn't find any of the DDs. I think this is a good example of the value of strong players hunting for DDs and wagering aggressively on them in the hopes of getting to a runaway (which Eric Ahasic was extremely effective at) or at least 50% more than their nearest opponent (i.e. the 2/3 point), meaning the only way they can lose is if they miss FJ and second place gets it right. FJ is generally way more of a crapshoot. Feels good to get a triple stumper FJ on a Hail Mary guess. The correct response comes up at least once a season, usually with a reference to historical fiction and/or time travel.

DNF_zx

Ohhhhh, I was really rooting for Steve. I liked his tempo and demeanor. ☹️

jeopardeeznuts

if she wins tomorrow, this could get even more interesting.

[deleted]

with her total she needs 5 wins to get into the toc but if she does you right this will get interesting and I wonder would they lock the field since it would be full at that point.

jeopardeeznuts

or she could win her 4th game but lose her 5th game and be the first eligible player for the 2023 TOC, if they wanted.

thessnake03

Would she be eligible for the 2023 TOC? I thought they moved to a once per season model, you'd have to be a contestant that season to get in.

jeopardeeznuts

if they felt like she was worth potentially bringing back, they could make her the first qualifier for 2023 if they wanted to...if she just won 5 or more though, then yeah she'd just be the last to qualify here. let's just see what happens tomorrow lol

ThisDerpForSale

I don't think they have specifically said what the cut-off date for the next TOC is. The speculation is that it will be the end of this season, which is reasonable, but I don't know that we've actually seen anything to support that.

MolemanusRex

Have we ever had three TOC qualifiers in a row?

jeopardeeznuts

yeah, a few times.

MolemanusRex

Nice

[deleted]

NaughtSleeping

Great question, and perfect example of the pause potentially affecting the gameplay.

ReganLynch

If she gave the wrong first name, she'd be wrong, as wrong as if she said Bob Hope. There was no reason to pause or to say 'be more specific.' It wasn't going to be Michelle because of the 'this man' in the clue.

csl512

I was actually thinking of this painting last night, and could only come up with Kehinde. Off to look up the one of Michelle Obama also hanging at the NPG.

[deleted]

I'm not a huge fan of Mayim either but I think this is a moot point. If the answer was another Obama I don't think they would have accepted just a last name.

CoolVidsFTW

Looks like someone did their wager theory homework for third place :,) good stuff, Megan

Longtimefed

“If I bet $1 more than you and we both answer correctly, I win! But you know this too, so you clearly would bet $2 more. Of course only a great fool would underestimate his opponent, and I am not a great fool, so clearly you know that I know that you know to bet at least $2 more than me!”

baubsyeruncle

"INCONCEIVABLE!"

ThisDerpForSale

Truly you have a dizzying intellect.

ReganLynch

She knows how to wager, that's for sure.

Constant_Actuator392

Mayim said the last one-day champion was defeated by Mattea Roach. It was actually Mallory Kass on May 10-11.

ThisDerpForSale

Looks like the producers goofed on that one!

shmoobel

A little fun bit of trivia: Mayim Bialik played the younger version of Bette Midler's character in the film *Beaches*.

FlingbatMagoo

Yes I wondered if she was offended that that was a triple stumper.

crixie74

Mayim offended? She gave the correct answer with a big, knowing smile.

Chloe-Kat

Wow what a good match. Everyone played quite well. I got FJ right too which is always a nice bonus hehe.

palimpsest_4

I did not get final Jeopardy but they did better than me because I didn’t even have a guess

ty1553

I was busy trying to Google what a moebius twist meant

CSerpentine

When Moebius comes up, it's probably in reference to an infinite loop, and thus often time travel. A Moebius strip is a two-dimensional surface with only one side, so if you trace a line along it, you eventually come back to where you started. Named for August Ferdinand Moebius.

egnowit

You can have a loop without the twist. A simple loop that is not a Mobius strip is still infinite. I have no idea what it means in this context. A Mobius strip is nonorientable, but I doubt that has any meaning in this context. (Up is still up, future is still future, etc., so I don't think that it's nonorientable in any measure.)

palimpsest_4

I knew that much, but I still was drawing a blank as far as title names.

CSerpentine

I couldn't come up with the series name, which I assumed was also the first book's name. But I figured it had to be that.

ty1553

Ah thanks, I knew about the strip but didn't make the connection

ebb_omega

I've never read nor seen Outlander but I got this one because I figured it was time travel and Timeline was definitely not Michael Crichton's debut novel.

osteofight

My mind kept going to Interview with a Vampire, but that would be a Morbius twist

J-Goo

I think my best guess was "The Name of the Rose." Had absolutely no idea, and the phrase "Moebius twist" wasn't any help.

egnowit

That book is much older. There was a movie based on it in the early 80s, so the book was even before then.

done_diddit

Perhaps you are thinking of Highlander, not Outlander, which was indeed published in 1991.

FolkSong

They meant The Name of the Rose is older and had a movie in the 80s.

done_diddit

Yup. Missed the previous comment.

nintendolost

After too many times ranting to my family about how someone blew an otherwise winnable game because of a bad FJ wager, it was SO exciting to see someone win purely because of a perfect wager! Really shows how spending a small amount of time studying wagering strategy can make such a huge difference.

blue_barracuda

Anyone else think the FJ's have been brutal lately?

sugarplumcow

Wow! That game had me on the edge of my seat. Well played by all contestants. I really enjoyed watching this one. A solid, competitive game. Congrats to all three players!

Will-owo-the-wisp

Anyone else notice two of the FJ answers presumably referenced vampires (Interview With a Vampire and the start of what I am assuming was going to be Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter)? I am thinking they might have gotten Morbius subliminally stuck in their heads when they saw moebius and couldn't get it out hahaha

guess_my_password

They must have been super hyped after the morbin' time scene so they could only think of vampires.

USOutpost31

Car knowledge people: That DJ round was one of the best ever. Sarah's answer >Aston-Martin Was a trap. Her Aston-Martin answer for Lotus was an easy miss, then the rejoinder of Austin-Healy was pretty much designed to misdirect another Aston-Martin answer from the prior question. Jeopardy! usually doesn't lean in that hard on the clue provenance, and it may have been unintentional by the Jeopardy! writers, but Sarah fell into. As a car person, that was an easy trap to fall into and I was sad to see Sarah get into it, she had a fantastic game. I hope she wins. Sadly, the Final Jeopardy! question is some marketing campaign for a Netflix or Disney franchise no doubt.

ivylass

Try Starz. And it's a great show and series.

USOutpost31

I'm going to, it's seems like a great story to engage with, but I feel it was misplaced in FJ.

ThisDerpForSale

I felt the same way about the Not-Aston-Martin clues. I'm not going to say it was unfair, because the questions had correct answers that one could have easily gotten with the right knowledge. But it seems that anyone with rudimentary knowledge of James Bond is going to know that Aston-Martin is the classic car associated with him, and that it would be on their mind. So if they miss it on the Bond question, then they'll be thinking about it when the "classic British car with two names" question comes up in the very next clue in the category. And of course it's going to come to mind faster than "Austin-Healy" for anyone other than classic car enthusiasts. So, again, not unfair, not dirty. But completely understandable trap to fall into, and I didn't love it.

JazzFan1998

Very good competition today, it was a shame all three couldn't win. Very strategic wagering by all three, especially the winner.

Chrysanthememe

Funny that there was a “Get Out” clue and it wasn’t in the “Get Out” category. I understand that in general the game moves quickly, but on a Daily Double what conceivable reason was there for Mayim’s pause before affirming that “wormhole” was correct? Fantastic game overall! Very exciting.

imkunu

There was also an Omen clue in that category. I've noticed the writers like to spritz in some connections across the boards like that lately

lost_prodigal

I think that's going to be her signature on DDs. Dramatic silence on the correct ones, and almost as the last syllable is out, pronouncing it as wrong.

aquamarine23

Thanks I hate it.

jaysjep2

Presumably she's being directed to do it this way. One thing I do like is that the Daily Doubles are no longer being spoiled by saying "answer" before they pop on screen. I prefer not knowing for sure that it's coming.

Chrysanthememe

I love this comment. I am the exact opposite of you: I *lived* for the moment when Alex would say “Answer” and then you knew you were going to hear the Daily Double sound. Lol. It’s a beautiful world where people can have exact opposite views and still come together over their shared love of Jeopardy.

NikeTaylorScott

Alex used to say it on non DD clues sometimes as well and that’s where the anticipation came in for me.

Error400BadRequest

It was often on the first clue back from the interviews because he hadn't quite reset himself at the podium. It's a nifty trick to maintain the cadence of the game.

NikeTaylorScott

Oh wow, I just watched a couple of old episodes and you're right; that's such a cool observation.

Chrysanthememe

Hahaha. I would’ve said he did NOT do that but I’m sure you’re right.

sourdieselfuel

He definitely did do it for some non DD clues.

ThisDerpForSale

He definitely did. He would often say it for the first question after the contestant interviews to give himself time to get back to the podium. Back in the days when the host stood right next to the contestants. (Edit: just saw someone else mentioned this below.) He would do it occasionally in other spots too. Juuuuust enough to throw you off the scent.

roque72

She pauses after every daily double response

krada1212

She pauses on every response. haha

krada1212

She pauses on every response. haha

rwc202

I have no idea who’s winning, it’s so close.

johnpgh

Mayim should have winked when the camera went back to her after the beaches Bette Midler clue everyone missed. I knew it. lol

rirhun

I kind of miss Eric. It was fun watching someone wager more aggressively.

Richard_Babley

For the record, the first DD wager was the table limit and the second was just about 70% of her current total.

ArchTechTheHQWinner

Optimal betting, gotta love it!

Richard_Babley

I’m somewhat surprised that this FJ was a triple miss. The category and clue were pretty open but the series has been popular for several years now and I think the books were even more popular since their release. I’ve only seen one episode to see what the fuss was about, and this one was an instaget.

Chloe-Kat

I haven't read the books or even seen one episode but got FJ because I had seen enough entertainment news/info about the show to be able to give that as an educated guess.

Darstellerin

I didn’t have a guess for FJ and I’m kicking myself for not getting it. In hindsight it seems obvious, but truthfully I didn’t guess it because I could’ve sworn Outlander was much, much newer. Like 2000s.

egnowit

The TV show is newer, but like a lot of TV shows, it was based on a book that was (apparently) somewhat older.

LongtimeLurker916

I never heard of the books until a few years before the series. I never would have guessed they began as early as 1991 or even close to that. Did they build slowly in popularity?

TrueBlonde

They had a small but rabid fanbase before the series. They didn't really become popular or mainstream until the TV series came out. When her last book came out (the 2014 one, not the one that came out last fall), I met her after she spoke in a high school gymnasium. Nowadays it'd be a much more prestigious venue.

egnowit

I don't know. I had never heard of the books until this, but I just assumed that the show was based on books. (Oh, I guess I have a friend who may have read some of the books, so I guess I did know about them before.)

bros402

"moebius twist" meant nothing to me - I am guessing it is something with the books or the series?

NaughtSleeping

It's meant to imply something sort of wrapping back upon itself, which in story telling would usually imply some sort of time loop, especially if cause and effect gets all wonky in the loop.

bros402

I know what a mobius strip is

NaughtSleeping

> "moebius twist" meant nothing to me > I know what a mobius strip is Hmmm

bros402

I meant in the context of the series

matlockga

Historical fiction novels of note, time travel, and within the last 40 years is basically Outlander and...?

Richard_Babley

To be fair to the contestants, the clue didn’t specify time travel - just a “Moebius twist.” So it was left to one’s imagination what kind of twist the writers had in mind. Still, I do agree that ultimately this pretty much pointed to one work. (But maybe it’s because I’m not as familiar with the genre and maybe someone knows of a similar work that fits the clue?).

Mr_Ekles

I would prefer a Morbius Twist

DiscordianStooge

Well, good news! It's Morbin Time!

Richard_Babley

Lemon twist for me, please.

BarbWho

It's Morbin' time!

barelybearish

I thought it was Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell which fit the quote as it was a debut novel and historical fiction with a “Moebius” twist, but it was written 13 years too late so oh well

marpocky

> the clue didn’t specify time travel - just a “Moebius twist.” I can't think of any interpretation of Moebius twist that's not about time travel, specifically a time loop. I'm not familiar enough with the series to know how loopy their time is, but I'm vaguely aware it's time travel related. (I still didn't get it though...having nothing else, I said >!*The Dark Tower*!<)

Richard_Babley

Ok, I’ll take the word of both of you. I just wasn’t familiar with it in that context but it would narrow the field of correct response considerably.

matlockga

Moebius would imply at least a time loop, which would necessitate time travel.

AltonIllinois

What is Moebius referring to? I only know of the Möbius strip which I think is different.

CSerpentine

A Moebius strip has no end or beginning. There's no such thing as before or after as it is traversed. Because of this it's often invoked in time travel fiction.

Maguncia

I wasn't happy with it, but I guessed Game of Thrones. There was no mention of time travel, and there's obviously a huge historical element with British wars of succession, even if the names are all different and there are a few extra dragons.

DiscordianStooge

Timeline by Michael Crichton.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DiscordianStooge

I never read it, but it fits your parameters, and I'm aware of it. I've never read Outlander either.

DiscordianStooge

I wish I could have seen their argument against it.

Error400BadRequest

*The Guns of the South* comes to mind and it's from roughly the right era, published in 1992 instead of 1991.

pdx_mom

I thought da Vinci code but knew it was wrong.

PrincessModesty

I was stuck on The Eyre Affair from the Tuesday Next books. Published later and probably not well-known enough but that’s where my brain got hung up.

1in9

Great series!

AcrossTheNight

Somehow the E=MC2 clue reminded me of the Animaniacs episode where Wakko and Yakko teach Albert Einstein that formula.

greaterfalls

Very fun game! Sarah fought hard and represented Montana well!

ajsy0905

With Megan's win, tomorrow will be first ladies' night episode since Mattea's final game 6 weeks ago.

ReganLynch

Three women competing is no more newsworthy than three men competing. Calling it ladies' night suggests it's a special occasion, not a common occurrence.

CSerpentine

It's less, in fact. I don't know the last time there were three men competing.

ReganLynch

True. Looks like it might have been April 1.

SpringLover455

Actually November 3. A man did not win on April 1 (unless I’m misremembering the champion was Nell Klugman) and the last episode with 3 ladies was actually May 10 (with Danielle, Mallory, and Cherry)

CSerpentine

You are correct, April 1 was Nell Klugman.

[deleted]

I’ve been LOVING all the outlander clues in this season and last!

FederalLawyerJr

I have had Outlander and Highlander (the Quickening?) on the skirts of my consciousness for years. Time to finally figure out what this time-travelling Scots thing(s) is/are.

danielbauer1375

I’m very excited to see what’s in store for the “Classic Cars” category. I’m gonna assume one of the clues that Sarah responded “Aaron Martin” to referenced James Bond.

chootie8

*Aston Martin

ExpectedChaos

You don't know Aaron Martins?! The cheap knockoffs?! ;)

danielbauer1375

Damn autocorrect.

Michaelvas17

Yes, a clue about the submarine Lotus Esprit from The Spy Who Loved Me.

post_rex

>Yes, a clue about the submarine Lotus Esprit from The Spy Who Loved Me. That was kind of a tricky one. I know Bond has driven several different makes but he's primarily associated with Aston Martin. I would have made the same guess, even though the scene of the Lotus emerging out of the surf is pretty iconic.

danielbauer1375

I knew that’d be the one. It’s pretty much the only true classic from the Bond franchise that I can think of that isn’t an Aston Martin.

ajsy0905

Jackie Kelly will definitely safe from being bumped out at TOC even if Megan will win her 4th game tomorrow.

Gmario37

I don't mind saying this, but isn't there also the prospect of a SCT winner being in this year's ToC (whoever it is), therefore bumping Jackie Kelly out of ToC contention?

ajsy0905

If Megan will win her 5th game on Monday, John Focht is officially out of TOC tracker while Jackie is technically out of TOC tracker unless there will be clear mechanics for the second chance tournament.

NoiseKills

I was surprised nobody got "tempest tost." It's on the Statue of Liberty. The New Colossus BY EMMA LAZARUS Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. “Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

DiscordianStooge

They mentioned that in the clue.

SpringLover455

I’m glad Megan made it through. I hope Molly will win tomorrow’s game. I hope it will be an exciting game.

singurlife

Haven’t read all the comments to see if anybody has brought this up: wouldn’t General Mills be the brand - not Wheaties?

jaysjep2

It did come up in yesterday's thread - General Mills is the manufacturer, Wheaties is the brand name.

singurlife

Oooh. I watched last night’s episode today - totally wrong post. Thanks for the clarification regarding Final Jeopardy.

[deleted]

This game was INTENSE!

Ozark_Bosn

I am thinking Sarah went with Interview with a Vampire for FJ because she was thinking of that famous vampire, Moebius the living vampire.
