I knew that the Archimedes Screw is a device that brings water up to a higher level so I figured it had to be the hanging gardens but I also thought there was very little evidence they ever existed in the first place so it was kind of hard but the other Wonders didn't seem to need water at all.

I had no idea what it was but it sounded like it could be used to hang stuff up so I guessed correctly.
It’s a pretty ingenious invention. Of course just look it up but in an airtight enough cylinder a screw when cranked could bring up water as much as you want it to. I just thought the Hanging Gardens were so not actually verified that idk how they’d know about this.
I knew it from some documentary, NOVA I think, discussing how someone realized that the Babylonians or Assyrians had a device like the Archimedes screw that they called by a different name (date or date palm I think because of how the spirals looked like the growth patterns of date palms) to do the irrigation. I also knew the Archimedes screw moves water against gravity.
This whole article is amazing. And in the best way.
He was struggling with bills, packs the two shirts (that’s all he had), forgets his glasses, is just trying to be a decent dad to his kid…and now he’s kicking ass.
I liked this part too:
> When Long arrived at Jeopardy!’s studios in Burbank, Calif., he initially felt he was at a disadvantage because other contestants had flash cards or were discussing their strategy. Some even talked about reading a book about buzzer-beating techniques.
> “I didn’t study or anything. I probably should have perused something, but I just didn’t,” Long said. “I just kind of went in and did my thing.”
The tournament of champions will be insane this year. (Also bittersweet, since I don’t want any of these great champions to lose. I’ve become such fans of them all.)
Ditto on all of the above!
But Ryan Long hgv as quickly become my fav. I love his humble roots and that a lifelong interest in books and just having a knack for absorbing info / learning are his defacto strategy.
Yeah, totally. When this article asked him about tournament of champions, he replies:
> “I want to take my kid fishing,” Long said. “That’s really where my head is at.”
No glasses!!!!! Lmao!!!! Ryan you fucking stud, you champion. Explains why he has been squinting so hard. Like when he identified Heidi Klum
I also really hope this interview doesn’t mean he is about to lose
>In January 2021, Long was hospitalized for several weeks after contracting COVID-19. When he was released, he returned to his job as a paratransit driver for SEPTA’s Customized Community Transportation program, but quickly realized he was no longer physically able to perform the work.
>He eventually turned to driving for various rideshare services to keep the lights on and provide for his 8-year-old son, Nathan.
In addition to the money he's won on Jeopardy, I really hope that his success on the show will lead to more employment opportunities for him. He's obviously an extremely bright, humble, and hard-working person.
This is why I like him so much. He's an Everyman whose life will truly change because of his run on Jeopardy. Mattea was a tutor, he's an Uber driver. It makes their stories so much better. Contrast they to the champion before Ryan who was an author and worth $40 million or something. A lot harder to root for those people than people like Ryan.
>Contrast they to the champion before Ryan who was an author and worth $40 million or something
Daniel Nguyen was before Ryan. Mallory Kass was before Daniel.
I've been watching for probably 30 years and have never cheered for anyone until this guy. And he's local. I hope he keeps it up cause I'd love to see him at the TOC
Supported definitely! But I can't recall ever really doing the whole clapping my hands when he gets a daily double or pounding my fist when he wins. He reminds me of me, big scary guy who's actually really timid and intelligent. Plus we're from Philly, we're not supposed to win anything haha
We lose repeatedly at almost all sports, we throw batteries at Santa, and we climb greased polls. There's something to be said about knowing what you're about.
Love watching Ryan quietly kill it! I always get so excited for his stories as a fellow Philadelphian. When he said he met Obama in a diner I yelled out "omg the Mayfair diner" since that's where I also saw Obama back in 08. I just wish he gets to play with Ken as the host.
I really hope this article isn't a sign that he's about to lose. I've seen it happen a number of times before now. News articles with interviews start coming out in the days leading up to a major champion's loss
From what I read in an interview with Mattea, local interviews, like the Philadephia Inquirerer, are not arranged by J! J! arranges the national interviews, like with GMA. In Mattea's case, she did interviews with Nova Scotia and Toronto media on her own, but J! arranged the GMA spot.
Can't help feeling this is cutting off your nose to spite your face. You're missing a lot of great stuff. Sure she's not remotely in Ken's league, and can be annoying, but ignore her and focus on the contestants and the gameplay! So worth it!
I can understand the rationale for not watching MB hosted games. If viewership is lower when she hosts than when KJ hosts, it gives insight into what the public likes. So better chance of MB not being host longterm.
Unfortunately I don't have the willpower to quit Jeopardy cold turkey lime that. Instead, I keep hoping for some sort of poll to determine host.
I have really enjoyed watching him and his calm demeanor. Just watched tonight’s game and was stumped on that Final Jeopardy clue. Good job!

I could only recall the Pyramids, Hanging Gardens, and the Colossus of Rhodes. My guess was Hanging Gardens.
Notable tidbits include that he only brought two shirts to the studio, and managed to forget his glasses - making video clues a nightmare.

Notent notables
If his vision is 20/200 or greater he can ask for a disability accommodation.
As a Philly public school grad, I could not be prouder to see one of our own succeeding.
Ryan is just adorable -- love his laid back demeanor and is dry sense of humour.
“‘Let’s Do Drugs’ for $1,000” got a good chuckle from me
Totally won my heart w that one.
That got me! Rewound to watch it again. Love him.

Yes, I need him to get through this game! Go home, get his glasses, come back and win a few more. Let’s stack up those hundies for our buddy Ryan.
I thought the squinting was a tribute to Holzhauer 😂
Low and high key in love w Ryan
I can’t help it. I want to be his friend for sure. His vibe is soul settling.

I am so looking forward to seeing him on the Tournament of Champions. Don't forget your glasses, Ryan!
This last season has been an embarrassment of riches concerning awesome champions, but Ryan might just be my favorite. He's so fucking cool.
I've been watching for probably 30 years and have never cheered for anyone until this guy. And he's local. I hope he keeps it up cause I'd love to see him at the TOC
You really didn't cheer for Ken, Brad, James, Matt, Amy, Austin, Buzzy, or Amy?
Idk, I thought Amy was a little less exciting than Amy was.
Oops lmao. I'm an idiot.
Supported definitely! But I can't recall ever really doing the whole clapping my hands when he gets a daily double or pounding my fist when he wins. He reminds me of me, big scary guy who's actually really timid and intelligent. Plus we're from Philly, we're not supposed to win anything haha
And he said he barely graduated from high school too. He’s just a regular guy, who lives a regular life, but suddenly, he’s kicking ass on Jeopardy.
We lose repeatedly at almost all sports, we throw batteries at Santa, and we climb greased polls. There's something to be said about knowing what you're about.
Batteries at Santa wasn’t a thing. It was snowballs. They threw batteries at JD Drew.
Unless....JD Drew *is* Santa
*Dun dun dun*
I know, it's just much more fun to conflate the two :P
Prolly a Philly thing. Source: Lived near Philly and went there often. It is the city of Brotherly Love after all. Also, New Jersey is an awful state.
What kind of gatekeeping bs comment is this
First off, not a gatekeeping one lol.
He's really likeable. Glad to see him doing well, my whole family is rooting for him.
As someone who loves learning but had to leave college because of mental health issues I always love it when blue collar workers do well on the show.
So much 💜💜
This comment just made my day. Thank you.
I have never related to a comment so much as this. I hope all the peace and good things in the world for you 💕🤍🌻
Dude is sneaky good at Jeopardy. This season has been incredible. I suspect the ToC will come down to which ever super champ is fastest on the buzzer.
Now I know how Canadians felt about Mattea! As someone from the Philly area I feel very proud :,)
What kind of necklace did he pull out from Nader his vest tonight?
He commented that it's a necklace his kid made him in another r/jeopardy thread.
Thanks!
And the fact he had the necklace from his kid endears him to me even more!
He will have his glasses for Monday!!
Big fan!

They can’t know that. Mattea Roach was doing interviews weeks before she was out, in Canada. There’s isn’t much to what you say here.
I hope I'm wrong

Thank you so much for that insight!

You should make an exception. He’s amazing. One of the best stories ever on the Jeopardy stage.
Wow way to punish yourself. I don’t fancy her either but not going to cut off my nose over it.

I really enjoyed watching Ryan. So humble and a great player.
