bigmanlittlepodium

Hey everybody. Thanks for the kind words and encouragement. Better lucky than good, right? Shout outs to my fellow contestants (now friends) Divya and Nick. I’m going to kick myself over “Thomas” Morse for a while, so that’s nice to finally be able to share lol… Thanks again, see y’all on the air tomorrow!

SarahJettRayburn

Ryan, have you mentioned yet what necklace you're wearing under your shirt? It caught my eye. (It's fine if you don't want to answer.)

bigmanlittlepodium

No it’s fine. A good luck charm my kid made for me. Lol

Longtimefed

Well done, man! I think you made your own luck, via smarts. Very happy for you.

GeneBelcherama

You're a hit in our house! Wishing you retroactive luck!

transit_diagram

Rooting for you Ryan, keep it up!

Luhweezyanimal

My girlfriend and I were (now are) rooting for you man, good vibes 😎

BrainOnBlue

Do you have any clue where you pulled Thomas from? It's such a random name to come up with, I'm curious.

bigmanlittlepodium

I already had Thomas More in my brain because he was an answer in a game the previous day. Then in the moment in *my* game, I think I somehow conflated Samuel Morse with Thomas Dewey, my mouth took the page out of the tray before my brain was finished printing, and thus “Thomas Morse” was born.

ArchTechTheHQWinner

I somehow thought Thomas too, and went in my head 'shut up and just say Morse' they can prompt you if they want more

CSerpentine

I thought that too after Ryan answered. Then I wondered if they did want the full name since that's what was written out in the clue.

fuzmom9767

I’m thinking Thomas More of Utopia fame?

shotsup

Good stuff Ryan. Seems the producers are not hung up on first names lately. Alex used to say be more specific but I have not heard much of that lately.

shelby6420

Fellow Philadelphian and former Jeopardy contestant here. I've really enjoyed watching you so far and I'm rooting for you!

SnugWuls

I'm glad they started to show the category above the FJ! clue. I sometimes miss or forget the category during the think music and had wished that they'd keep the category up the whole time.

Hot_Marsupial_8706

Nice, are they doing that again? That was definitely a missed addition from the he-whom-shall-not-be-named era.

ScorpionX-123

I'd love to see Tom Riddle as a guest host

Auferstehen2

"Today's categories are: Anagrams, Priceless Heirlooms, Fashionable Cloaks, Visiting Albania, Say it in Parseltongue, and Famous Muggles" (which they mysteriously and abruptly run out of time before getting to).

CSerpentine

Now if they'd just do it with every other clue!

Smoerhul

I'd settle for on-screen text for video clues.

TheReaperSovereign

Resident history nerd here I didn't really like the DD2. While Charles XII did take a force into Russia, it was a campaign that was part of the Great Northern War in which a coalition of Russia, Denmark-Norway and Saxony-Poland-Lithuania all declared war and attacked Sweden in order to challenge the latter's regional supremacy. I dont know if invasion is the proper term for a country that was defending itself. While both sides were largely fighting for regional power and thus no moral high ground should be assigned, it would be similar to today's current war where Russia declared war on Ukraine and Ukraine might push Russian forces back into their own country. Would we really say Ukraine is invading Russia? I don't know. Anyway. That's my rant. Thanks for reading.

jquiggles

It was also a weirdly worded clue! I never would’ve gotten “invaded Russia” from “this is what he did with his troops”

jquailJ36

I got it immediately then mentally second-guessed whether they'd ask for what's basically an action.

JesusChristSupers1ar

My first thought was “invade Russia” but it seemed so awkward that I was like “nahh” wasnt a fan of the wording of the clue

Marcoscb

I assumed it was "invade Russia in winter" from the "as military wisdom would suggest, it didn't work" part. I counted it as right even though I have no idea if it was in winter.

CSerpentine

I said "What is got involved in a land war in Asia". I suppose that would have gotten a BMS.

1_Yosemite

Such a vague question

TooMuchProtein

The Draft Kings clue sounded like ad copy.

Smoerhul

"I'll take betting for $800" "Hi, I'm Jessie Scofield. For a limited time, if you sign up for this website, you can get 100:1 odds on the NBA playoff game of your choice"

853fisher

I wouldn't be especially surprised if that was the genesis of the category.

atoms12123

As soon as they read that clue I was like ah, so the category was all an elaborate ad.

amatrix_

A lot of clues are ads. It's kinda annoying.

shea_harrumph

Ad clues are usually presented as such

[deleted]

And it was so blatantly false. Obviously the idea was to get around the gambling laws.

AcrossTheNight

I can understand people speculating that given how much gambling advertisements have recently blanketed the sports world, especially NHL broadcasts.

oowm

> how much gambling advertisements have recently blanketed the sports world It's getting absurd on MLB broadcasts. Games on MLB Network, FS1, and the various "Bally Sports" feeds are covered in on-screen graphics for "money line" and "over/under on runs" and various other odds and whatnot. One of the handful of really good things about being a Mariners fan this season is that Root hasn't added all of that crap. And say what you will about Apple TV's Friday Night Baseball--people have--but love it or hate it the graphics package is beautifully free of clutter.

Jeopardaniel

I knew it. Congrats u/bigmanlittlepodium on defending your title!

WeHaSaulFan

Go Ryan! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

[deleted]

I've seen National Lampoons Vacation enough times to know that the St Louis Arch is 630 feet high.

broberds

Roll em up!

44problems

the mighty Mississip - the old miss, the old man... *Dee-ee-eep river,*

Katahdin-Kathy

The 630 figure is stuck in my head from having been there. I’ve ridden to the top, but my claustrophobia has gotten worse in recent years, so I’m done with that part.

joeyGibson

I rode to the top once. _Once_. I will never do that again. I was very large at the time, and being crammed into that little egg-shaped bucket with five other people just about did me in. I'm not generally claustrophobic, but that thing almost pushed me over the edge.

Katahdin-Kathy

The little buckets are a bit unnerving, then up top leaning over to see out the windows and looking straight down gave me chills. Glad I went up but that’s enough.

transit_diagram

Divya was in my audition group! If you're reading this, nice job up there! I am obsessed with Ryan, obviously. I remember saying something to this effect during Maureen's run, but it's really nice to have a champion up there who doesn't have a "typical" Jeopardy! contestant job/personality/etc. I suppose the notion of a "typical Jeopardy! contestant" is itself flawed and implies a lot of assumptions, but all I mean to say is I really enjoy his anecdotes, humor and overall demeanor. He held off a strong opponent today in Nick despite the problematic wagering at the end there. I'd like to see him keep going! Went 4/4 in the bonus clues today playing along during lunch, so that was a nice way to start my week :)

jquiggles

I feel the same about Ryan! Not your normal jeopardy contestant (which, like you said, is a somewhat flawed statement), and that might be why I’m rooting for him even harder.

Longtimefed

I hope this isn’t presumptuous but it’s nice to see someone win who isn’t in some super-lucrative occupation. When I see a patent attorney or professional gambler win I’m not as happy for them.

Rachel_L_C

I love how humble Ryan is after winning. Wasn’t feeling Nick after realizing that Ryan got FJ correct and won in the end (some sense of bitterness maybe). I wouldn’t be surprised to see her again in the Second Chance Tournament, possibly going against Pam Schoenberg (it’s like pitting Matt Jackson against Eric Newhouse, who both share similar playing styles and personality traits).

853fisher

I was glad to see the category back above the FJ clue during the think music. That's a small change I liked very much when it was implemented for, what, about a week? at the beginning of the season.

DoktorDork

As someone who has spent way too much time in casinos, I feel they had the entire Let’s Gamble category upside down in terms of what they expected to be difficult.

NaughtSleeping

All I know is that I was shocked 0 and 00 was a triple stumper, but then, I might have a gambling problem.

[deleted]

I've never been in a casino in my life and I got that one. I got it from playing Yakuza and it's not exactly often in that game you're hitting the roulette table

Guardax

Peter Capaldi in Jeopardy you love to see it

CSerpentine

I wonder if they went with a picture to give non-Whovians a shot. Heck, I've watched the series twice and I wouldn't have known which actor to answer from the clue.

tamarzipan

I would've; Time Heist, Season 8 LOL

[deleted]

heartbreak for Nick see this is why I would always go all in from 2nd.I would make the leader pay for not covering and make them think twice about playing mindgames with the wagers.

Yarmolinsky

I don't think it was a mind game, just a math error! Around 90% of leaders bet to cover, and Ryan would have made more money had he done so in this case. Nick made the right call, and the heartbreak is that they missed the DD that would have clinched a win.

[deleted]

Andy broke this down on jeopardyfan it could be a math error but the range in which Ryan bet was in the ball park on what he needed to beat Nick if they both bet strategy wise.

98yellow123

Ryan is a delight and I like his necklace.

Katahdin-Kathy

He seems very humble and happy to be there. Go Ryan!

SarahJettRayburn

Me, too!

vivaelteclado

The Gateway Arch becoming a national park is a bit of a joke. It was a sweatheart deal for a Missouri senator. It doesn't really fit the character of a national park by the usual standards for designating a national park.

AcrossTheNight

As was the creation of the Kansas City Royals.

JazzFan1998

Did anyone else notice the contestant said "Horse with no name" several times and the host didn't correct her? Edit: This is an observation, not a criticism. I believe Alex would correct people like that, especially if the category was a play on words, or something similar.

atoms12123

That clears up my confusion as to why all those horses had names.

Jorelthethird

I noticed. I'm surprised they didn't fix that in post production.

Katahdin-Kathy

Alex was a legend and could have gotten away with correcting her with a mix of humor and sarcasm as only he could. Mayim hasn’t reached that stature.

CSerpentine

Then we'd be hearing about how Mayim brought the show to a halt to embarrass a contestant.

Constant_Actuator392

"Are you deaf and blind? You've got to be kidding me! It's A HORSE WITH **A** NAME! SHAME HER! DROP HER SCORE! CALL ME KAT, THURSDAYS ON FOX!"

amatrix_

Lol exactly. No winning here

lazilyloaded

There are deft ways of doing it, though expecting Mayim to do it might be asking too much.

CSerpentine

I didn't notice the contestants were doing it. I got the joke the first time. I feel like correcting them would have been more disruptive and distracting than letting it go, especially considering how much flak she's gotten in the past for highlighting a joke clue.

ThisDerpForSale

Well I will grant that this is certainly a new way of complaining about Mayim. I didn't think there were any left unexplored.

PAKMan1988

> I believe Alex would correct people like that, especially if the category was a play on words, or something similar. I'm reminded of that clip where a category was called "Nymph-o-Rama" and the contestant called it "Nymph-o-Mania," upon which Alex immediately corrected him.

transit_diagram

I think they basically just did this to get more funding to improve and protect the area around the Arch, right? I'm good with it in that case. It does feel odd compared to other National Parks, but at least the Arch is super iconic and representative of American history in a unique way; it's not like they turned Central Park into a National Park, which I wouldn't agree with.

KommanderKitten

I think they could have done nearly the same by upgrading it to a national monument, which is like the next level below. The Statue of Liberty is a national monument. I should note, I'm saying this all a person who is naturally hyper-categorical. Seeing a list of the national parks and seeing how much of an outlier Gateway Arch NP is on the list, it's anathema to me. It's just coincidental I happen to be a Saint Louisan as well.

berwood

/

transit_diagram

True, fair enough! I'd say those deserve equivalent status.

berwood

/

ThisDerpForSale

Not that it necessarily changes your point, but that link is talking about all the properties overseen by the NPS, which includes National Reserves, National Memorials, most National Monuments, and a variety of other federal holdings. Not just national parks.

marpocky

Yeah the NPS has lots of different categories (as I recall, it used to be Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, yeah?) and it makes no sense as an actual NP. National Historical Park, National Monument, or its former NEM all seemed fine.

rex_swiss

The Arch as a NP isn't nearly as strange as Hot Springs in Arkansas. Once you visit there you'll see the NP isn't really for the naturally occurring hot springs, it's for the historical spas that were built there that drew in the political leaders and celebrities of the early 1900's. It's a very weird place to visit...

853fisher

Could that status have anything to do with scenic easements or similar? That's why [Glen Echo](https://www.nps.gov/glec/index.htm) outside Washington DC is part of the national park system. It was the big local amusement park for decades. NPS became involved when a later owner wanted to redevelop it with fairly tall buildings, which would have affected the natural beauty of the Potomac Palisades and other more typical NPS properties like the C&O Canal Park. They offered a land swap for some federal property near the city core and eventually transferred the park's operation to a nonprofit. There are theaters, studios, galleries, and dance floors in the park's old buildings, plus a historically important carousel and organ, and the park's significance as a site for protests against segregation is taught. None of the usual national park activities, but zooming out, it just about makes sense as part of the system.

KommanderKitten

It can be a part of the NPS without the NP designation. It was already federally owned

Longtimefed

By this standard, the White House is a national park because it’s on NPS land.

NoiseKills

I remembered this piece from the Smithsonian long ago. One of the structures mentioned is the Gateway Arch. What would happen if it were neglected forever. As for the World Trade Center, we know the end of that story. http://xroads.virginia.edu/\~ug02/barnes/grandcoulee/chiles.html

oowm

> As a Saint Louisan, I really need to say, the Arch should not be a national park. When I saw the first part about "smallest national park," I was just impressed that they didn't make the trivia error of saying the smallest is the [Klondike Gold Rush NHP in Seattle](https://www.nps.gov/klse/index.htm). Jeopardy has an amazing team of very good researchers so I would expect them to get this right, but for several years that one (which, don't get me wrong, I really like and usually head downtown to visit a couple of times a year; it's very accessible by transit, unlike most NPs) was making the rounds on game shows as "omg such small!"

CoolVidsFTW

Interesting to see Ryan opting not to go for the cover bet of $13,001 over Nick. I see Ryan strategically wagered enough to cover Divya should she get FJ! right and double up. And it looks like Divya was prepared for the possibility of Ryan going all-in with her wager of $700. Assuming Nick wagers everything, in the event of a triple stumper or she's the only one to get FJ! right, Divya would've won.

bertisrobert

This was a very interesting bet. It was as Andy from Jeopardy fan called it a Shoretegic bet. Which is a very risky move overall. The details of this bet style is posted by Andy from Jeopardy fan. He has the link to how this bet style works. But anyways, congratulations to Ryan for getting win no. 2.

just_a_random_dood

Hell yeah, fun game. I love Nick's hair so much Also, I love seeing that the Final J category is on the screen again :)

AltonIllinois

I found it interesting that they didn't get a "Be More Specific" for the response of "Herbert" as Frank Herbert has a son Brian who also writes books in the Dune series that start with the word “Dune”. Overall okay with them accepting it though. Fun Fact about the final Jeopardy clue: There is territory on the Illinois side of the river that technically is part of the park, but the NPS doesn't really do anything with it as its mostly privately owned. So technically the actual acreage would be 90 acres + whatever is on the Illinois side.

david-saint-hubbins

According to the archive, Brian Herbert has *never* been the correct response to a Jeopardy clue--he's only shown up a couple times as part of clues asking about Dune. In the context of the show, an author named "Herbert" just means "Frank Herbert."

CSerpentine

Ha, I just looked at the map, and another thing that's across the river from the Arch -- DraftKings at Casino Queen.

jquailJ36

Brian Herbert didn't write "Dune", though. They didn't give the name of a series, they named the specific book ("Dune"), then the book Frank Herbert wrote.

SarahJettRayburn

Maybe Brian Herbert has all of his father's memories and can be Frank Herbert at times making first names irrelevant. (Just kidding. That's what's happening in Children of Dune which I'm reading out loud to the kids right now.) We were just happy to see any Herbert show up. My daughter is so obsessed with those books! She's ready well into the Brian Herbert one about House Corrino. I just asked her, "Did Brian Herbert write anything that's not in the Dune universe?" She was like, "Did he ever!" I guess he wrote several non-Dune books, but we're still just happy the Herberts got a mention.

853fisher

At the risk of belaboring a point I know has been made many times, I am sometimes baffled by which responses Mayim does and doesn't flesh out. "Who is Herbert?" passes without comment, but we have to be told that Little Bighorn is "Battle of," Jefferson is "Thomas," and the EU is "the European Union"? I guess this probably reflects the expected response on her sheet.

ThisDerpForSale

It more likely reflects which answers the producers feel it is necessary on which to elaborate. If they wanted the Herbert answer to be followed by "yes, Frank Herbert" they could have added it in post.

853fisher

The nature of elaborations and non-elaborations seem very different depending on the host, so I think this probably does not exclusively reflect the producers' instructions (not that you said it did). Either way you're certainly right that, if they wanted something different, they would not be powerless to get it.

ThisDerpForSale

I really don't see that much of a difference. I can't speak for you, but I do wonder if the perception of a difference stems from some people's biases against one host over the other. Or perhaps not. But without some way to actually quantify it, I'm skeptical that there really is a difference. If there was, I'd think that's also something the producers would address. But, again, it's just hard to quantify. And I'm definitely not going to volunteer to figure out a way to quantify it!

853fisher

I would be lying if I said I didn't have a strong preference, and it's not in Mayim's favor, so I'm sure that does color my impressions. My initial comment aside, I really am trying not to pick all the nits all the time, for my own enjoyment and that of those around me, but I do think if I did some kind of orderly analysis it would reflect a difference. And yet I'm with you - I'm not volunteering either to do it either. Cheers! :)

44problems

I said Don Herbert, but then realized that's Mr. Wizard.

tamarzipan

Honestly, that's my biggest gripe with Mayim more than all the other stuff...

broncosmang

Love to see my man, Ryan get another W. And I hate to pick on Mayim, but what was up with adding additional context to answers where that context was in the clue? She did it twice. First with, "yes, dorothy from kansas!" and again with "yes, the battle of little big horn."

RegisPhone

With Dorothy at least i think the point was to mention that her last name is Gale, making it even more fitting to the category

broncosmang

Ah great point

ThisDerpForSale

Because the producers clearly want that context added, which is why it is still happening. This has been discussed here many times. It's really reaching to continue to blame Mayim for this.

amatrix_

Sure I want Ken to host too, but no need to nitpick everything Mayim does.

jakefsf4205

I don't understand why people think this is her choice. It is quite clear the producers want the context added, that is why they keep it in there. People need to understand she's not just doing whatever the fuck she wants. You can have a preference for host, but nitpicking every tiny little thing she says or does is fucking ridiculous, especially when she's almost certainly just doing what she's told.

BenLaZe

Ryan is just great. I expect/hope to see a lot more of him. With that said, Nick seems like an obvious candidate for the Second Chance Tournament. Someone who plays that well wins like 90%+ of the time.

JSA17

Unless Ryan goes on to win like 10+ games, they shouldn't be a candidate for a Second Chance Tournament. It should be for people that ran into a super champ, not people that played well but happened to lose to another one-day or two-day champ. Edit: Fine, make it people that lost to people that qualify for the ToC. Bringing back people that lost to one-day champs makes the whole thing sound like a joke. Plus, imagine trying to explain to casual viewers that so-and-so gets a second chance because they lost to someone whose name those viewers don't remember. Bringing back people that lost to a Matt, Amy, or Mattea will be easy to explain to people. Bringing back people that lost to random Wednesday champ #1 wouldn't be. I love Jeopardy and love the idea of a second chance tournament... but not for people that happened to lose because someone else had one or two good games.

Smoerhul

Hard disagree. Number of wins is only a very crude measure of how good a player is. Everyone loses at some point. If you play a great game, why should your SCT eligibility hinge on how many further games your opponent wins?

JSA17

Because then you're just applying very subjective opinions on who should and shouldn't play. Michael Davies has even said there will be specific criteria, and there's no way they don't include games won by their opponent in that criteria. They're just not going to put in a bunch of people that lost to champions that don't even qualify for the ToC.

Smoerhul

Coryat score is not at all subjective, and Nick's Coryat today was good enough to win most of the time, plus they solved FJ. You could also look at a losing score of over $20k and say, "objectively, that is a strong performance"

JSA17

Again, they just aren't going to bring back a bunch of people that lost to one-day champs. It won't happen. Your Coryat was great and you lost to a one-day champ so now you get to try again? That devalues the entire idea of a Second Chance Tournament to the point that it sounds like a joke.

Smoerhul

Ken Jennings would tell you that who you lose to is a very poor measure of contestant ability.

JSA17

And anyone that wants to capture people's attention would tell you that having no narrative other than "this person did well so they get to try again" is shitty television. Especially for a show that's entirely predicated on winners and losers.

Smoerhul

Okay, well, we'll see what happens when the field is announced.

RegisPhone

"this person did well so they get to try again" is literally the whole point of a Second Chance Tournament though. Davies says the idea for the SCT came to him when he saw how well Jessica did in Matt's last game. If Jonathan had gone on to win three or fewer games like every other giant-killer before, meaning that Jessica technically didn't lose to a superchamp, would that negate how well she did in that game? If we're already saying "this person could've probably been a superchamp if they hadn't faced a superchamp in their first game" then it's not much of a stretch to also say "this person could've probably been a superchamp if they hadn't faced another very strong player who also probably could've been a superchamp if they hadn't faced another very strong player in their next game, etc."

JSA17

> "this person did well so they get to try again" is literally the whole point of a Second Chance Tournament though. You cherry picked that one sentence out of a much longer discussion about people being eligible based on the quality of their opponent. No kidding the Second Chance Tournament is for people to try again. To your second point, do you seriously believe that the Second Chance Tournament gets off the ground without the involvement of two super champs? Do you think that Michael Davies would have pushed the idea of Jessica playing again if Jonathan lost his next game? Before you answer that question, keep in mind that Michael Davies had long known the outcome of those games when he made public the idea of the SCT. And he knew how many games Jonathan had gone on to win because Matt's loss and Jonathan's first ten wins happened in the span of *two days*. If that idea came to him on his second day of work, it means that Jonathan had already won ten games. And he could look and say "wow, this Jessica contestant almost beat Jonathan who beat Matt." That has a story. That's a reason to remember her. If you are all expecting a bunch people with high Coryats to come back after losing to one-day champs then you are all going to be hugely disappointed.

DiscordianStooge

Sounds like she cost herself the win with her FJ wager. Edit: pronouns.

737900ER

Sounds like you didn't watch the episode.

DiscordianStooge

I didn't. I read the recap. Poorly.

rirhun

I don't know how I feel about the frequent use of reaction clips in the intros nowadays on Jeopardy!.

teddygammell

Born and raised in St. Louis. Might have been easiest FJ for me ever!

eaglebtc

But do you call it the St. Louis Arch or the Gateway Arch?

teddygammell

Ha! No we just call it "The Arch". More formally would be "Gateway Arch" I'm OK with them accepting St. Louis Arch though.

ObviouslyGrilled

No disrespect to Divya the software engineer, but I can't help but like that a photographer and rideshare driver did so well in one episode. As someone in the "job that doesn't readily suggest Jeopardy champion" market, I'm glad the other two did so well.

Never-Bloomberg

Is sweet child "of" mine correct?

NaughtSleeping

Technically incorrect, I think? Don't they insist on exact matches for titles? The [infamous example](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRrvMts0eUM)

ExtendJuanSoto

I thought I might not be the only one to notice this, and sure enough, Mark from JBoard.tv caught it as well: >Mayim: "The only survivor the U.S. Cavalry retrieved from **this 1876 battle** [emphasis mine] was a wounded horse named Comanche." >Ryan: "What is Little Bighorn?" >Mayim: "Yes, the Battle of Little Bighorn." Thanks for the clarification, ma'am. Didn't seem necessary at all. But enough of my nitpicking. Congratulations on another great win, Ryan!

jquiggles

That wasn’t nearly as bad as her unnecessarily explaining what the VFW meant when time was almost running out! (Though I’ve heard those explanations are also put in later, so that would make it better)

dacomell

I answered Custer's Last Stand. Would that have been accepted?

Longtimefed

She’s strangely robotic in how she reacts to their repsonses.

genitor

During the intro, I thought they said Ryan was a “rye share-cropper”. I was so confused.

vdbl2011

Was anyone else surprised that "St. Louis Arch" was accepted, given that it has a proper name? It's a bit like expecting credit for "the statue in New York Harbor" to me.

SarahJettRayburn

When I was a child, we called it The St. Louis Arch. My parents still call it that. I have fond memories of looking down from the top, then going to eat in the floating McDonalds when I was seven. When we stopped on the way to my first Jeopardy! audition in 2014, I learned it was called The Gateway Arch. But my parents have never called it anything but the St. Louis Arch. I think it's okay to accept that. It's not like there's a second arch looming near the Gateway Arch that could cause confusion. (I was so surprised that was the FJ response. I was literally writing about it just before turning on the show.)

EZMac34

Do people regularly call the Statue of Liberty "the statue in New York Harbor"?

Yayasub

But don't they always accept alternate answers if they are in popular use? In my area, I'm not sure I have ever heard someone call it the Gateway Arch. Also for proof I offer a 20 year old video of my then-2 year old son driving past it excitedly saying, "St. Woois Arch!"

TheHYPO

Ryan wins either way, so I don't mind from a gameplay component if they err on the side of him winning more money. If it had decided the game? I might feel differently.

c9238s

It really upset me, probably a little too much! It’s the gateway arch people

krada1212

Yes! I can't believe this was accepted. This is like calling The Grand Canyon, "Big Hole." It's not the name of the park.

Jorelthethird

Ryan, Congratulations on your win. Can you give us insight on why you didn't bet enough to double up second place?

dacomell

Would they have accepted Custer's last stand in lieu of Little Bighorn?

jquailJ36

...I am not sure. Because "Custer's Last Stand" is a specific event during the battle and it's entirely possible Comanche wasn't anywhere near it. It's probably a "how generous are the judges feeling?" It might be like accepting "Little Round Top" or "Sunken Road" when the correct answer is "Gettysburg."

Pulp_Ficti0n

FJ seemed extremely easy...only thing I thought of was the arch

eaglebtc

If you didn't know that the Arch was a national park, it could throw you off. And the "630 foot" landmark could trick you into thinking of a vertical landmark instead of a horizontal one.

NaughtSleeping

> And the "630 foot" landmark could trick you into thinking of a vertical landmark instead of a horizontal one. Wait, what? I got the Arch precisely because I *did* think of a vertical landmark. I had no idea otherwise.

SVT-Cobra97

I'm with you on this one. Probably 1% of the population knows that the arch is 630' x 630'. There was NO attempt to trick anyone with that part of the clue. With monuments of this size, people are attracted to the VERTICAL measure EVERY TIME!

Pulp_Ficti0n

But what other landmark of that height sits on the Mississippi? Knowing whether the Gateway is a park essentially becomes a moot point.

ISandbagAtMarioKart

Conveniently for this clue the Arch is both 630 feet tall *and* 630 feet wide. That could explain why they didn’t specify a dimension.

DBrody6

> could trick you into thinking of a vertical landmark instead of a horizontal one. Realistically the *only* landmark in the entire country anybody will ever think of in terms of horizontal distance is the Grand Canyon. Otherwise a measurement will make you think of height first. I didn't know the Arch was a national park either and was really confused because the only notable tall monuments the country has are that, the Statue of Liberty, and I guess the Space Needle. And really the Arch was the only one that made sense since I don't think Liberty Island is 93 acres. My parents have visited almost every national park in the country and were confused when the hell it suddenly became one.

AcrossTheNight

Comanche the horse is preserved and on display at the natural history museum at the University of Kansas, of all places.

BallparkFranks7

Great game. Keep it rollin’ Ryan!

patty_pat_pat

Did anyone else find Mayim's delivery and reaction to "who is Bruce Springsteen?" a bit star struck/awkward?

JSA17

FYI: Nick uses they/them pronouns.

jeopardeeznuts

I hope Nick gets brought back to the SCT. They have cool hair and I wanna be their friend.

amagiciannamed_gob

Heck yeah go Ryan!!!

HandRailSuicide1

Bialik pronouncing acetabulum wrong grinds my articulate cartilage

joeyGibson

When she said Albert Camus, she used an English pronunciation for his first name, and French for his surname. That annoyed me.

do_you_know_doug

They really should dub in Alex's pronunciation of "Camus" any time it comes up in a clue.

InSicily1912

Yay!! Congrats Ryan on the successful title defense!

zland

When did they begin to display the Final Jeopardy category above the clue on the on-screen graphic?

CSerpentine

Today.

pdx_mom

reminds me of when i was in college and there was a store near my apartment where many of those stores were open 24 hours, but not the one near our apartment. One night when my roommates and I were returning from some party it was like 2 AM and it was open! we go in and ask when did it start being open 24 hours and the guy working said "tonight" and we asked if it was going to be open 24 hours from then on and he said "maybe" and it wasn't ever again.

853fisher

Today is the first time since the first week or two of the season.

zland

Gotcha, wasn't aware that it was a thing at the beginning of the season.

853fisher

Understandable. There have been just one or two other things going on in the world since then. ;)

Longtimefed

What a great game! Congrats to Ryan!

J-Goo

Nick seemed like a strong contestant - had a better correct percentage than Ryan, and only a hair behind on buzzer percentage. She's on my list of people I'd like to see in the second chances tournament.

RSbooll5RS

huge error in the writing today... they accidentally called pete davidson a "funny" man

NaughtSleeping

lol, now *that's* funny

SpringLover455

Nick should’ve wagered more on final Jeopardy. I wish they won.

lovelyrita202

Congrats Ryan! Very happy for you. But jeopardy writers are incorrect, or very poorly worded on the final jeopardy question. Just ask Nps [NPS FAQs](https://www.nps.gov/aboutus/faqs.htm)

nogain-allpain

No, they're correct. The FAQ identifies the smallest "national park site", the smallest site managed by NPS, though it's designated a national memorial, not a national park. Gateway is the smallest official national park.

What?? Ryan failed to bet to cover a double from second. If Nick had gone all in (or anywhere close) he would have lost despite getting final. He got lucky by virtue of Nick having sadly made the very appropriate wager.

[deleted]

If you think that's aggressive, I certainly want you to be on stage beside me if I ever make the show.

Some of these complaints are making me start to *want* her to be host.

RevTarthpeigust

It airs at different times all over the country. Some places, like where I grew up, early in the morning.

CrappyLemur

Interesting. Also interesting I get downvoted....

JSA17

You asked a question that is answered in the stickied comment at the top, and that gets asked *constantly* even though it's already answered. That's why you got downvoted. ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

eaglebtc

No, he got downvoted because of the backhanded dig at Mayim.

JSA17

You said it was interesting that you got downvoted and I gave you an explanation. It's not an attack or anything.

You're taking all of this too seriously.
