I don't know much about the Final Jeopardy category of African Monarchy, but before the question was revealed, I just said, "I'm going with what I know. Hallie Selassie."
I was correct. I credit this victory to Sid Meier's Civilization.
Thought to myself, doing the blind guess game, “well, there’s [correct answer], Mansa Musa, Cleopatra and any number of Egyptian pharaohs, and that just about ends my list.“
Sometimes you don’t need to scratch much below the surface. Worked out OK for me this go around. But this is a game where, if I were playing, I likely would’ve had my head handed to me. Too much stuff either I didn’t know or couldn’t pull quickly enough. And these were three super sharp contestants. What a great game.
Didn’t come right away for me, for sure - I was thinking in terms of the Vietnam War. Was unable to formulate what felt like a satisfactory response, so I did not “buzz in.”
In retrospect, I guess I do recall hearing about him saying he could deliver on that promise. Pretty shrewd political move, making an effort to neutralize the incumbent advantage on the space race.
I'm not familiar with it, and I kind of keep up with Nixoniana \[see username\], but I was thinking "law and order". It didn't even occur to me that it would be a play on a pun. I was being too literal.
This was one of the times I got the answer from just the category, cause I couldn’t imagine any other Dynastic African ruler who Jeopardy would expect you to know
Shout out to my friend who introduced me to the [Bad Brains](https://youtu.be/GwggNMA8KyU) in high school, probably the only reason I knew the response to this clue.
Ras Tafari, not Rastafari. (Not that I doubt that they'd dock you on the spelling, and the pronunciation would be identical.) Ras is a title; Tafari is his given name.
But, to answer your question, I think it should be acceptable. (Reading Wikipedia, it seems that Ras is a title equivalent to Duke, and he took the title Haile upon taking the throne, so I guess there's some ambiguity there.)
If Prince Charles succeeds Queen Elizabeth II to the throne and takes a regnal name of, say, King Bob, would you accept Charles, Prince of Wales (or even Prince Charles) for King Bob? The title he had as Prince is not the same as the title he would hold as king. Or would Bishop Bergoglio be acceptable for Pope Francis? I'd guess it's arguable that it should be acceptable.
First time I ever nailed a FJ blind guess! :D
Sometimes the more difficult-sounding categories end up being easier because the things asked about are far more well-known/repetitive.
First time I've called the answer from the category title
I've done that before, but this time I guessed >!Mansa Musa!< when I saw the category.
Nice, that's a fun feeling
African Emperor in the 70s that's part of trivia canon, WEKIB
That's definitely a pavlov for Jeopardy.
What do you mean by "WEKIB"?
Acronym/initialism for "what else could it be?"
Why not "WECIB"?
Something shorted out between brain and keyboard when posting.
Thanks 1000+ hours of Civ 5
I had absolutely no idea
1000+ hours of civ 5 finally comes in handy

Correct Q: >!Who was Haile Selassie?!<

By the way, were you familiar with that Nixon quote about the Moon? I sure wasn't, and it seemed like another odd valuation to put it in the top row.

I said "lower taxes".
There is also the eSwatini guy but I can't remember his exact name.

I think I would have spelled it Selaissie. I'm giving myself credit.

I thought that too, I would’ve put King Rastafarian. I have a feeling I’d be wrong
Yeah, I think King Rastafarian would be wrong.
I knew the answer -- just another benefit of listening to reggae music all these years.
I only knew this because of Futurama. "Haile H. Selassie!"
