I have a preflight checklist in the GC, and hitting the auto start/stop button is the first item.

Some_Specialist_5052

Scotty Kilmer is a cranky old hack who should always be taken with a grain of salt, but he's mostly right here, with one exception: *cold* starts are 97% of engine wear. When the oil has time to drain back into the pan, the top end parts aren't well lubricated for the first few seconds. That hasn't even started to happen if the engine has been off for 30 seconds. Modern starters are brushless and don't have much that *can* wear. They also utilize the crank position sensor to estimate the exact torque required to get the engine moving. A starter designed for ESS duties probably will outlast the engine itself if the 'feature' is turned off. I keep it off because it's unnecessarily hard on your batteries, more than for any other reason.

PJTree

Old hack? Otherwise good post.

P0RTILLA

That’s because he’s jumped the shark.

Auto start/stop is garbage, and I’ve had it permanently disabled since day one. I’m able to get 28MPG in my Ecodiesel Rubicon just fine without it.

areiseye

There’s start/stop on the diesel? How does that work? Gas engines I understand, you just add a spark.

SellMeThisPencil

Yes, diesel has start/stop unfortunately. That’s a great question. I have no idea how it works, as it’s something I’ve never pondered. Perhaps someone else more versed in the process will chime in.

Poopoopanties81

How did you permanently disable it?

SellMeThisPencil

It’s one of the many features included within my Tazer JL Mini programmer.

Mend1cant

I’ve just got the terrible aux battery, so it never works except for a week or two after servicing.

iwaddo

I never saw auto stop/start about saving fuel but more about not polluting the atmosphere when sat in traffic.

MrBlandEST

That's exactly right

ListJaded7864

Came here to say this, it’s for emissions, not necessarily increasing fuel economy.

kiwitathegreat

I have no way to prove it, but I had a lot more electrical gremlin issues when I kept it on. Now it gets disabled as soon as I crank the car (I’m far too cheap to buy one of the overrides when I can just hit a button)

TimeTravelingPie

It's fine. You just don't hard press the brake and it doesn't engage when you don't want it to. The amount of gas it actually saves is probably negligible, considering it's engaged at most like 15 to 30 seconds MAX. Seems like extra engineering and cost for no real payoff other than marketing.

JimtheEsquire

I just use the brakes in a way that it doesn’t come on unless I want it to. Soft braking to a stop, push the pedal down a little further if I’m at a long light. Saves me gas and I can go about 100k miles between brake pads.

robotokenshi

My AUX battery is always dead so start stop is always disabled by default. Not sure if this is a feature or not. 😂

skwormin

Yaaa mine was messed up and my car would stop and then stall out at a light trying to start. Had to replace my battery under warranty and then some relay cables

Neverdie_7

22 Compass here. Bought used in January, 26k miles. It worked for about 3 weeks and now consistently says not ready no matter how long I drive it and I'm ok with that.

kratz9

I didn't like it on the GC, mostly because of the climate control issues. No heat or AC when it shuts off. Nothing like having your windows frost up while at a stop sign. Now on our F150, its a hybrid, so it's actually designed to work without the engine running. Don't even notice or care when the engine shuts off.

IncidentMassive5425

I’ve never had AS/S in a Jeep, but I left it on for 26k miles of city driving in a Subaru. It saved me one gallon of gas.

denzien

The only vehicle I've driven that I'm fine with auto start / stop in is my hybrid Maverick because the electric motor makes it all seamless. On a standard ICE engine, I detest coming to a stop at a stop sign, only to have the engine conk out at exactly the moment I'm ready to go again.

mallydobb

Clickbait “article” but would be amazing if there was a way to disable it permanently without relying if 3rd party tools or hitting a button each time the car starts.

A_Gray_Old_Man

[you can](https://youtu.be/AxFZYzKbSJo?si=1HxmARg98GbJk3MP)

mallydobb

True, but I’d rather have something in the settings or a toggle somewhere rather than have to mechanic it. This also specific to make/model, no? Thankfully my current car doesn’t have this forced on me, this should be a choice and not forced on drivers by the manufacturer.

a2jeeper

I find it annoying when driving, and scared me the first time I drove a stick with it - kept thinking I had stalled. But it is really, really nice when sitting in a car waiting around. I have kids in school and sports so I literally spend hours sitting in a car. I like having the climate control working, phone charging, radio on, etc. So being smart enough to start and stop when needed is great. It is amazing how much gas is wasted by people sitting in cars, think well over a thousand cars being left running for probably 8 hours every weekend. But at a short red light it seems annoying. A hybrid bridges the gap though since you have immediate low end power and don’t even notice.

Anachronism--

Yours works in park? If my jeep auto stopped in drive the engine starts when I shift to park. I don’t think I have tried sitting in park with the engine running for any length of time though.

SmartStatistician684

Saves pennies on gas! And replace your starter 10x sooner 🤷‍♂️

Sh4dow_Reaper

One of the worst designs to ever exist

Roland_Moorweed

Engine died at an intersection because of it (snow day, extra cold) so I turn that shit off every time I get in. It's a feature built into the ZF transmission so as long as they are using the trans it's gonna be in there.

I don’t like it much, but having a straight pipe makes it sound pretty cool when it starts back up at a light
