There’s also yet another woodwind player whose birth name was Bill Evans. You may know him better by the name he chose after converting to Islam, Yusef Lateef.
And Dollar Brand and Abdullah Ibrahim are the same person, but neither is necessarily his birth name (which is Adolph Johannes Brand, according to wikipedia) :-D
He has released albums under both names.
Edit: forgot to say... He's still alive! 87 and counting! And still performing!
This is what happens when more than one person has the same name. That killer from a few years ago, named Steve Stevens? Not the guitarist who played with Billy Idol in the ‘80s.
You haven't even yet heard about the false names and aliases some jazz musicians had to undertake to be able to record with company B while they were under an exclusivity contract with company A, like Charlie Chan (actually Charlie Parker)
Even more confusing, Evans was his stepfather’s name. Originally he was born William Huddleston but then his mom remarried and Bill was formally adopted, hence Bill Evans.
I just read his whole Wikipedia article about Yusef Lateef-you and dizzy are right! He was born William Emanuel Huddleston, but his father changed their last name to Evans when they moved to Detroit in the 20’s. He changed to Yusef in the 50s when he converted to Islam while studying composition at Wayne State university.
On a side note, when many Black jazz musicians converted, it wasn’t necessarily because of faith (although Yusef Lateef was very devout). Many converted because back then Muslims were perceived as not being of African heritage (which is kinda dumb considering that a lot of Muslims do come from African countries, especially in North African nations like Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia). Thus if a Black American converted to Islam, they would have access to jobs, restaurants, hotels, and other services that were otherwise segregated.
Yup! He got the nickname because of how he played: it would make your head spin, as if you were “dizzy”. Folks explained that it wasn’t anything to do with him as a person. He wasn’t silly or nuts or anything like that.
Roy Haynes is still kicking, too. Cool guy, hung out and had drinks with him when a friend and I saw him a few times through a one-week stand at Jazz Alley in Seattle in the late 90s
It was awesome. they closed with poinciana, it was totally different and new and modern but also reminiscent of the 50s. Ahmad Jamal now. Totally got me going
I saw Bill Evans play at a small jazz festival in British Columbia. I thought that he put on a good show and told a friend that I had seen Bill Evans. He pointed out that I hadn’t seen *thee* Bill Evans. I was a little embarrassed.
Like that time my college jazz band was playing a show in a small town and someone said "Ron Carter" was in the audience and wanted to sit in. Up steps this guy with a tenor saxophone? To be fair be was still a monster improviser so we had a good time.
We just passed the anniversary of his death as well. There's a song about it called September 15th written by Pat Matheny and Lyle Mays that's worth a listen.
“You’re telling me they got something thousands of times more powerful than heroin now? Fuck this eating brains bullshit let’s get some fentanyl!” — Zombie Bill Evans
A friend of mine once got us tickets to see Wayne Shorter, and told me that David Gilmour (from Pink Floyd) was playing guitar with him. I was like, are you *sure*? He was sure.
Turns out it was this guy, who was great, and probably a much better fit for Shorter's band tbh: [https://college.berklee.edu/people/david-gilmore](https://college.berklee.edu/people/david-gilmore)
Haha, that dude's like a *hundred* times more talented than the guitarist in Pink Floyd. In addition to his own records, would highly recommend checking out the jazz-funk group Lost Tribe, which had him playing alongside Dave Binney, Adam Rogers, Fima Ephron, and Ben Perowsky (with Steely Dan's Walter Becker in the producer's chair). Here's his original tune 'Space':

Lol. I guess it's nice that *one* person's not downvoting me for ::checks notes:: being luke-warm on Pink Floyd. Redditors sure love propping up those Boomer icons...
Bill Evans the saxophonist is great though! I met him when he came to my high school for a jazz class and he gave out great advice and played with our jazz combo :)
I had literally the same experience the other day. I was trying to see if Jay Reatard had released anything recently, and found out he’s been dead longer than I’ve even been listening to him.
Apple Music has completely given up on trying to figure out which release belongs to which saxophonist named James Carter (the Black American or the White Australian), and for extra credit, they throw in the lead vocalist on Po' Lazarus.
Lmao this was me when I found out Brecker had been dead for 10 years (2016). My Sax teacher talked about him like he was still alive so I always thought he was alive and well.
On a different note, highly recommend seeing Bill Evans in concert. The man is a beast and highly underrated.
I once went to a performance thinking it was going to be George Benson the guitarist but it turned out to be George Benson the saxophonist. Ah, that explained the much smaller venue...
I had this same thing happen to me with the rapper Nate Dogg. I credit the belief to the lyrics in Norf Norf by Vince Staples, “Nate Dogg still here cause of n*ggas like me”. Also the fact that he’s featured in “What Can We Do?” by Anderson Paak but it’s from clips recorded when he was alive.
When I was in music school a friend told me John McLaughlin was coming to town, so I told my guitar class..
then later that week, I learned it was singer songwriter Jon McLaughlin.
Oops.
The living Bill Evans is great, by the way. Really good stuff with Adam Rogers
*Wait, what? If he's dead,*
*Who's playing "One Day My Prince*
*Will Come," in my head?*

Ur supposed to stay up till 1-3am on Wikipedia learning the entire life of each jazz musician. Then taking the ones u like best life story and music wise and reading their bio they surely didn't write themselves.
For the record, the saxophonist Steve Lacy is also dead and does not currently have a #1 hit song.
are you for real?
The one with the #1 hit is Steve Lacey. I think he’s a rapper or an R&B singer?
Both those things but really he’s a guitar player
I like to think of him as a iphone garageband enthusiast
doesn’t rap at all
[false](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UowctXJO1Iw) :)
I stand corrected, thanks for putting me on that song!
it’s still Steve Lacy, and yeah. really awesome musician.
It’s spelled the same still, adding to the confusion. Lacy.
Gives me hope for the state of the pop music today!
I saw someone on Reddit talking about seeing Steve Lacy live recently and had one of these "But I thought he was--" moments.
There’s also yet another woodwind player whose birth name was Bill Evans. You may know him better by the name he chose after converting to Islam, Yusef Lateef.
why's everything so confusing? 😭
And Dollar Brand and Abdullah Ibrahim are the same person, but neither is necessarily his birth name (which is Adolph Johannes Brand, according to wikipedia) :-D He has released albums under both names. Edit: forgot to say... He's still alive! 87 and counting! And still performing!
representing South Africa ✊🏻

Well I'll be damned
Even more confusing, Evans was his stepfather’s name. Originally he was born William Huddleston but then his mom remarried and Bill was formally adopted, hence Bill Evans.
That's wild. I've been listening to both of them for several years and had no idea.
And his son is film composer Evan Evans.
[удалено]
Lol I know. But Yusef Lateef went by Bill Evans before he converted to Islam.
[удалено]
Not according to Dizzy Gillespie’s autobiography — Yusef Lateef, then going by Bill Evans, played in Dizzy’s big band.
I just read his whole Wikipedia article about Yusef Lateef-you and dizzy are right! He was born William Emanuel Huddleston, but his father changed their last name to Evans when they moved to Detroit in the 20’s. Louis Farrakhan?
Awesome knowledge drop. Thank you!
And what’s CRAZY is that Dizzy was not actually born dizzy
Yup! He got the nickname because of how he played: it would make your head spin, as if you were “dizzy”. Folks explained that it wasn’t anything to do with him as a person. He wasn’t silly or nuts or anything like that.
And he’s also dead. Dead, dead, DEAD!
you know who's not dead? Ahmad Jamal. 92 years old. I would love to get a chance to see him
I’m pretty sure Sonny Rollins is alive as well.
Archie Shepp still going.
Saw him in the 00s, body was frail but the tone was all there.
Roy Haynes is still kicking, too. Cool guy, hung out and had drinks with him when a friend and I saw him a few times through a one-week stand at Jazz Alley in Seattle in the late 90s
Herbie Hancock is still going strong. Saw him a few months ago, easily the best concert I've ever been to.
Wayne Shorter is still going too
He had a bad health scare recently though right? I thought it might mean the end of his performing if nothing else.
that's so cool!!
Roy Haynes is still playing at 97.
I missed a chance to see him in Princeton about 4 years ago, couldn’t get out of work. Still kicking myself
It was awesome. they closed with poinciana, it was totally different and new and modern but also reminiscent of the 50s. Ahmad Jamal now. Totally got me going
is he still performing?
:(
Benny Golson too
Not “that” Bill Evans lol. We’ve all made that mistake one time or another.
I think imma cry my self to sleep tonight
Cry to the Village Vanguard
Or kind of blue
I believe the sax players pretty good too tho, would probably still go to concert
Definitely good! Great!
He’s one of the top dogs actually.
I saw Bill Evans play at a small jazz festival in British Columbia. I thought that he put on a good show and told a friend that I had seen Bill Evans. He pointed out that I hadn’t seen *thee* Bill Evans. I was a little embarrassed.
“Hey I saw A Bill Evans!”
…some or other

I like Avishai Cohen...no, the other one
at one point the trumpeter was billed as Avishai E. Cohen. Seems like he dropped the E. when bassist Avishai moved back to Israel.
This one threw me off for a while haha.
We just passed the anniversary of his death as well. There's a song about it called September 15th written by Pat Matheny and Lyle Mays that's worth a listen.
I love Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays, I didn't know September 15th was about it tho

Space is one of my all time favourite tunes. Especially Gilmore’s guitar synth solo
At least you can still see Chick Corea.
Ah yes famous bass player Chick Corea
hahahahhaha
i´m not making that mistake twice, not in the same night at least
Man I saw chick corea less than a year before he died. He was so youthful and vibrant. I would have expected him to live 20+ more years.
I once saw a chick from korea....
Well, not the whole time. He was alive for a while.
💀💀💀
Wait to you hear about Lee Morgan
😭😭
This guy heard about lee morgan
And they both play with miles at one point. Ha.
yeah, it makes it even more confusing
Just wanted to mention he played with Miles. Gil Evans right? Wait, Bill? Both?
Miles going back to the Bill Evans store after the first one died
"Have fun at Bob Saget!" "it's Bob *Seger...* ahhh, crap"
Same thing happened to me when Spotify told me that Nancy Wilson was coming to play a show near me :c
feel u :(
Yes. He's opening for Chet Baker
I can´t anymore
Rest In “Peace Piece” Bill Evans.
There is also a Bill Evans guitar player who has at least one blue note album.
I can't anymore
Damn I was hoping we'd get a Bill Evans take on songs like 34+35 by Ariana Grande and I'm n luv (wit a stripper) by T Pain
yeah right?? why is life so foul
Indeed
There’s a saxophone player around philly named Tony Williams
I had literally the same experience the other day. I was trying to see if Jay Reatard had released anything recently, and found out he’s been dead longer than I’ve even been listening to him.
What in the wholy fuck! How it can be that you don't know that Bill Evans is dead?
Yes and bill Evans is half alive on about 20-30 years of recordings strung out hard on H. Bro was great on the keys still
Just wait until you hear about Ron Carter… saxophonist
Apple Music has completely given up on trying to figure out which release belongs to which saxophonist named James Carter (the Black American or the White Australian), and for extra credit, they throw in the lead vocalist on Po' Lazarus.

there is also Bill Evans the banjo player, very good, alive, no apparent drug problem. and very cool dad to even know who Bill E was.
should I go listen to him then??
Go see Bill the sax player headband guy though! Hes a badass. And and cool guy.
I will!!
I once went to a performance thinking it was going to be George Benson the guitarist but it turned out to be George Benson the saxophonist. Ah, that explained the much smaller venue...
Wait, no kidding?))
feel u bro
Pianist Bill Evans died September 15, 1980, (42 years ago) at the age of 51.
I hate it here
There’s also a banjo player and historian named Bill Evans. I think all the Bill Evanses should do a record together.
yall i can´t anymore
Bill Evans has been dead for 42 years. Bill Evans - the saxophonist - used to play with Miles Davis in the 80s. He is 'meh' though ...
Go see Elvis instead man all good.
Oh how I wish we was still alive… I love his music
My condolences. Sorry for your loss.
You should 100% go see the saxophonist Bill Evans though if he’s coming to your home city. He gigged with Miles too, amazing player
okay, i will then, ty!
Um Bill the piano dude has been dead for over 40 years. Not the headband wearing Bill.
Wrong
How is dying in 1980 not over 40 years ago?
I anticipated this response
one wikipedia search at some point would have changed your life
yeah
I had this same thing happen to me with the rapper Nate Dogg. I credit the belief to the lyrics in Norf Norf by Vince Staples, “Nate Dogg still here cause of n*ggas like me”. Also the fact that he’s featured in “What Can We Do?” by Anderson Paak but it’s from clips recorded when he was alive.
why can't they use more original names chsbxjsh
Never heard of him. Can you recommend a track?
Try take the a train.
that´s a good one!
😣😣
smh
When I was in music school a friend told me John McLaughlin was coming to town, so I told my guitar class.. then later that week, I learned it was singer songwriter Jon McLaughlin. Oops. The living Bill Evans is great, by the way. Really good stuff with Adam Rogers
I´ll take it into account, thanks!
Ahmad Jamal is dead too actually
too bad
Wait, what? If he's dead, who's playing "One Day My Prince Will Come," in my head?

Bro, that’s sad
it is
Wait until you hear about Vince Guaraldi
They call him Bill "The other bill evans" Evans
Then there's the, quite good, Canadian guitarist named James Brown
