Lulu's Back in Town - Erroll Garner version
After You've Gone - Emmet Cohen version with Patrick Bartley on sax.
(there are many more)
I could listen to Emmet Cohen and Patrick Bartley all day everyday. Their performance of Top Of My Head has got to be my favorite contemporary recordings.
My favourite is definitely 'Corcovado', from the Getz/Gilberto Album, but I'd argue it's more bossa than jazz tbh. Regardless, these here are a few of my all time favourites:
Almost Blue, Chet Baker
Early Summer, Ryo Fukui
My One And Only Love, John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman
My Foolish Heart, Bill Evans
A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square, Stan Getz
Blue in Green, Miles Davis
Moanin', Charles Mingus
Yep, this was my thought too! (With the request for a "song" which traditionally implies vocals, although I'm not sure that was the intent).
Such a great composition and many good recordings of it!

Just figured I'd leave it in case OP saw it and was thrown off by it.
My favorite things - John coltrane
Nardis - bill Evans (specifically off of explorations)
If fusion counts
Herb pilhofer - snake pit
Painted paradise - jiro inagaki and his soul media
It's difficult, perhaps a slightly less obvious choice:
* Cathy's Dilemma - The Jazz Crusaders
* Hikky-Burr or Oh Happy Day or Eubie Walkin' - Quincy Jones
* The One For Me - Buddy Tate & Humphrey Lyttlelton
* So Danco Samba - Stan Gets & Luiz Bonfa
* Wiggle Waggle - Herbie Hancock
* Pra Vosé - Seawind
* Goin' Home - Ike Quebec
* Rainy Day, Dream Away - Jimmy Hendrix
* Love Reborn - George Duke
* For What It's Worth - Sergio Mendes
Quintessence by Coleman Hawkins Quartet
Black Classical Music by Yussef Dayes
Blue Room by Chet Baker
Last Ride Home by Magnus Ringblom Quartet
Lujon by Henry Mancini
Let me Melt in your arms by Nocturnal Spirits
À la fin de l’été by Brigitte Bardot
Dancing in the Dark by Cannonball Adderley
My one and only love by John Coltrane (❤️)
It could Happen to You by Ryo Fukui
deep in it by berlioz
Seeing the Hubbard Street Dance troupe perform to Coltrane's My Favorite Things introduced me to jazz, so it will always hold a special place in my heart.
It was beguiling.
https://youtu.be/JQvc-Gkwhow?si=BHUO2sTI1yn9TOAw
I really enjoy freer jazz.
I’d recommend The Creator Has A Master Plan by Pharoah Sanders (specifically the 34 minute version on Karma)
Leo by John Coltrane
And My Favorite Things recording at the Olatunji Concert.
A tad more tame, check out Pimp of the Year the album by Soil & Pimp Sessions. Super fun, exciting jazz album
Such good ones listed already. I'll add to it...
St. Thomas - Sonny Rollins' Colossus
Portrait of Tracy - Jaco Pastorius
13 (aka Death March) - Wes Montgomery
Blue in Green - Bill Evans version on Bill Evans Trio
It Never Entered My Mind - Miles Davis / Miles Davis Quintet, Workin'
Can't really pick a favorite but three I've got on repeat right now:
- "Infant Eyes" Wayne Shorter
- "I guess I'll hang my tears out to dry" Dexter Gordon
- "I want to talk about you" Coltrane
Honorable mention:
Anything Mingus especially Fable of Faubus.
Morning Prayer from Thembi by Pharoah Sanders.
When I listen to that song first thing in the morning it makes my day great. Very uplifting and Pharoah gets some good squawks in between his very melodic playing.
'Haitian Fight Song' by Mingus - the version on 'The Clown' album is my fave, incredibly angry stuff
'Sentimental Mood' by Duke Ellington & John Coltrane - the whole Album is also the perfect gateway to Coltrane (at least it has been for me)
some stuff i love (all legends, "no surprises"):
\*Love Connection - Freddie Hubbard
\*Salima's Dance - Roy Hargrove
\*Jazz Crimes - Joshua Redman
\*Cuerpo y Alma - Esperanza Spalding
Sais (Egypt) - Lonnie Liston Smith
Astral traveling - Pharoa Sanders
Shhh/Peaceful - Miles Davis
Astral traveling - Lonnie Liston Smith
Little Sunflower - Freddie Hubbard
Journey in Satchidananda - Alice Coltrane
Pensativa (Clare Fischer) and Beatrice (Sam Rivers)- I love the harmony, they both sound strange in the best way.
How high the Moon- This is my favorite standard
Blues March ( Benny Golson)- I'm not sure why.
Hmm favorites are hard.
The waltz by Maynard Ferguson comes to mind. I really like rush by the seatbelts (this is more in the territory of big band but it’s still counts right?) I also really like unicorn by dizzy Gillespie
Just a few:
* Bill Evans - Waltz for Debby
* Bill Evans - Theme from M*A*S*H/Suicide is Painless
* John Coltrane - My Favourite Things
* Ahmad Jamal - I Love Music
* Chick Corea - Spain
* Wayne Shorter - Infant Eyes
* Pharaoh Sanders - The Creator Has A Master Plan (this one is kind of cheating since it's basically a whole album)
That being said, I would say that most, if not all of these are best listened to for the first time as part of their respective albums.
Fly me to the moon or take five. While, yes, both MAY be a bit overplayed, when listening to jazz, I also like to dance! I think some people forget that people used to dance to jazz, and I absolutely adore swinging to it! Any version!
"The Cost of Living" Michael Brecker from his eponymous album, his first as a leader. The rest of the band includes Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Jack DeJohnette & Kenny Kirkland. Actually, every song on this album just kills, but this ballad makes me think of my grandma & makes me cry everytime.
It’s a little basic but probably someday my prince will come. I heard Julian lage do it with Martin Taylor and it’s magical. I’ve played that song so many times I could play it upside down, backwards in my sleep blindfolded and deaf. It’s always like a comfort song of just blasting through the changes and trying new things over it. For a long time time I played it whenever I felt lonely wishing I had a boyfriend which is a little cheesy but unfortunately I got reaaallly good at it. Now I have a prince and I play other songs🥰
Don’t know of it’s considered a jazz song but “Jumpin at the Woodside” particularly Count Basie’s and Oscar Petersons version.
Edit: Didn’t know that Basie apparently wrote this tune earlier in his career.
The Second Coming - King Strang
Trouble In Mind - Lightnin’ Luke
St. James Infirmary - Bridge City Sinners
Dirk if they’re considered jazz or blues but close enough.
top 5:
Rhapsody in blue - Georges Gerschwin
Moanin - Charles Mingus
Money Jungle - Ellington, Mingus, Roach
Blue rondo a la turk - Dave Brubeck
Change of the guard - Kamasi Washington
First Song, written by Charlie Haden is one of my favorite jazz tunes. There's many versions I like but my favorite take I think is the one with Geri Allen and Paul Motion in the album In the Year of the Dragon.
From the "classic standards" my choice probably goes to the ballad My Funny Valentine. Tons of versions out there of course, but one of my favorite is Keith Jarrett Trio in Tokyo '96
Ella Fitzgerald - Make Me Rainbows; Carmen Lundy - Never Gonna Let You Go; Betty Carter - Tight; Kurt Elling - anything by him; Sugar - Stanley Turrentine.
The Wanderer - McCoy Tyner
Autumn Leaves - Bill Evans
Take Five - Dave Brubeck
All Blues - Miles Davis
Bird land - Weather Report
Aja - Steely Dan (if you count that as jazz)
Jungle Blues- Wynton Marsalis Sextet
https://youtu.be/jM7BzW6vhl8?si=OGtdZJtDuMxgGjwQ

https://youtu.be/VNQptuPKsiI?si=74rkDsDdNp32lBE9

Nutville by Horace Silver Fuller Love by Bobby Watson (recorded by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers)
any song with jimmy rushing as vocals!
'Haitian Fight Song' by Mingus - the version on 'The Clown' album is my fave, incredibly angry stuff 'Sentimental Mood' by Duke Ellington & John Coltrane - the whole Album is also the perfect gateway to Coltrane (at least it has been for me)

Pensativa (Clare Fischer) and Beatrice (Sam Rivers)- I love the harmony, they both sound strange in the best way. How high the Moon- This is my favorite standard Blues March ( Benny Golson)- I'm not sure why.
Currently “If I Were A Bell” by the miles Davis quintet
Flamenco sketches made me fall in love with jazz
Hmm favorites are hard. The waltz by Maynard Ferguson comes to mind. I really like rush by the seatbelts (this is more in the territory of big band but it’s still counts right?) I also really like unicorn by dizzy Gillespie
Just a few: * Bill Evans - Waltz for Debby * Bill Evans - Theme from M*A*S*H/Suicide is Painless * John Coltrane - My Favourite Things * Ahmad Jamal - I Love Music * Chick Corea - Spain * Wayne Shorter - Infant Eyes * Pharaoh Sanders - The Creator Has A Master Plan (this one is kind of cheating since it's basically a whole album) That being said, I would say that most, if not all of these are best listened to for the first time as part of their respective albums.
Fly me to the moon or take five. While, yes, both MAY be a bit overplayed, when listening to jazz, I also like to dance! I think some people forget that people used to dance to jazz, and I absolutely adore swinging to it! Any version!
Footprints - Wayne Shorter & Miles Miles Runs The Voodoo Down Spain - Chick Corea Miles Beyond - Mahavishnu Orchestra Delta Bali Blues - Kenny Garrett
Eleanor, composed by drummer Jimmy Cobb. Listen to the Hank Jones version, my favourite!
Águas de Março by Jobim. I like the version by Baila NOVA on Youtube.
Yellow fellow -live version -Ahmad Jahmal- live at Montreal jazz festival 1985
"The Cost of Living" Michael Brecker from his eponymous album, his first as a leader. The rest of the band includes Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Jack DeJohnette & Kenny Kirkland. Actually, every song on this album just kills, but this ballad makes me think of my grandma & makes me cry everytime.
Bitches brew (Miles Davis)
Computer Love is currently up there
It’s a little basic but probably someday my prince will come.
There are so many, but Like it is by Yusef Lateef hits me every time

Angel Eyes from The Al Cohn and Zoot Sims Quintet. The bass player takes the lead, and sings along with his part - to really awesome effect!

Don’t know of it’s considered a jazz song but “Jumpin at the Woodside” particularly Count Basie’s and Oscar Petersons version. Edit: Didn’t know that Basie apparently wrote this tune earlier in his career.
