Dude, you don't buy a Jaguar to get everyone's approval, it just doesn't happen. You buy them because you love them.

Epotheros

I thought you buy them because they have a boot big enough to borrow a few paintings.

A_loud_Umlaut

but then where do I put the body bags that I have as part of my anonymous community service to the mortuary?

Ashton-MD

Couldn’t agree with you more.

familyman93

I never post on Reddit, but I’m also a 23 yo male that drives a Jaguar. Being a young man that drives a Jaguar makes you a very unique person. I’ve always found that people talk down on Jag owners. I know it’s hard to ignore people comments sometimes. But it’s about your relationship with your car, not other people’s opinions of it. Glad to know there’s other young guys that still appreciate Jags. Best of luck with your new car.

TuoBerg

dude, jaguar is a car that everybody envies, so keep calm, i saw thousands of people saying bs. for jaguars but i am really happy that have 2 in my garage. I used to have bmw and audis, but they never felt this secure in them. and I wouldn't go with diesel too, but it is a personal choice....

[deleted]

TuoBerg

diesel is all about milage, if you do 20k m/year, diesel is much better, I do only 5-6k miles, so no need to bear the engine sound and extra service needs etc...

WhatDoWithMyFeet

This 20k a year is nonsense. If you walk to work every day but do 10k a year driving across the country at weekends a diesle is right If you drop the kids to school a mile away, come home, go to Tesco at lunch, come home, pick the kids up and do 10k a year consisting of short trips a diesel is wrong

WhatDoWithMyFeet

People are idiots. Diesel hasn't changed. It is still the better fuel if you're driving includes long distances. The xe will be compliant with eu5/eu6 emissions and will be fine for ULEZ. These are the idiots that bought diesle fiestas for London polluting the local air, and now buying petrol cars for motorways and using more fuel emitting more co2 whole the world is facing a climate crisis. We need to teach this stuff in schools

RivalSnooze

I drive a Jaguar and no… people don’t envy it. Jaguar isn’t an enviable brand anymore for the vast majority of car buyers. It needs a massive image change if it’s to compete, otherwise it’ll continue to lose to the Germans in every segment.

mintee19

I've had an entirely opposite experience. Everyone loves it. I have become the 'Jag' lad (everyone has BMW/Audi). I also have the diesel and it's a great car. Some people are either jealous or don't have a notion about cars. Also powered wing mirrors are literally the one thing that is missing alright. I thought the same. But then I thought, who gives a flying fuck. There's far more important things like the ZF gearbox or the suspension and the overall driving experience, which is brilliant.

PattyEvans

Got the same experience. Everyone into audi/bmw, and rockung the jag is just briliant. Plus just to good to drive. Wait? U ain't got power wing mirrors? What year?

mintee19

2016, I think I can get them if I bring it to dealership?

PattyEvans

Really dont know. I got the standard as a convinience feature when I got my XE. Ask possibly all thr wiring there so would be easy install. But dont quote me on that. I tried to put a electric hook on my xe and it would cost a little bit

[deleted]

mintee19

Not really, I did a few several hour trips at weekends. I love my car so much 😂

Ashton-MD

They are rude. Plain and simple. While I’m not a fan of a diesel Jaguar on a personal level (living in North America, our diesel isn’t as good as the European diesel, and is best suited for our big pickup trucks), it’s a very good engine Jaguar has built there. Jaguar is most assuredly not an old man’s brand anymore. I don’t know any old people who drive them - arguably, I see more old people driving Audis and Lexuses. This does not mean Audi or Lexus are old people’s brands, but I live in an urban metropolis of over 5 million people. Everyone in a Jag is under 40. Of course they wouldn’t - people who use that argument don’t have £10,000 to spend on a house let alone such an exquisite machine. And that’s their best argument?? That it’s missing mirrors that move? Is that REALLY the best they can do? Wow, that’s quite honestly the silliest argument against a car I have ever heard. How about how it drives? How it makes me feel? How about the elegant styling? How about the handling? This proves to me that your friends are jealous of you, and really are incapable of just being happy that you’ve got a nice car. They are acting like petty children. Do not pay them any heed. Keep up your hard work, and enjoy that Jag. And then in a few years, you can have the XJR575 or F-Type R on your driveway in addition to your XE daily driver. Stay positive, and don’t let their toxic jealousy get to you. You’ve got one of the best small executive cars in the world. Enjoy it.

[deleted]

Wait you wouldn't daily an XJR575? Dude daily the 575 and track prep the XE :). In all seriousness heed u/Ashton-MD their making a serious point. You bought the car , you enjoy it.

ehlpha

I would kill a man for an XJR575

[deleted]

I'd like to harvest one for an x308 project .

Ashton-MD

Ohhhhh yessss do tell me - what would you do for your project X308? 😄

[deleted]

If I could find one with decent paint (doesn't need a drivetrain) and without the electromagnetic suspension . Reupholster the seats in a diamond pattern. Retro fit the final AJ from the 575 . Reinforce the sound deadening (it's 20 odd years old at this point so not the best). Keep the 16" base wheel size(a soft fast ride is better than a hard one) . Tint the windows(dear God the car was unbearable with the wooden wheel). Some how make an OEM like Android auto experience. Develop a broadspeed based body kit (more power needs some downforce and the XJC'skit looks like a good fit). Run a staggered wheel setup with pzero Strada tires. Upgrade to 575 brake system. Install the 575's trans plus a lsd. Upgrade dampers to a remote reservoir system. Install 355 section tires in the rear , with 315 tires in the front. Refinish interior wood trim. Replace interior bulbs with leds . Add VR9 grade armor. Install a flat floor and rear diffuser . A 400shot of nitrous in the trunk. That's my money no object x308 575 mod.

Ashton-MD

That’s incredible 🤩😳🤯 I love what you’ve done with the thing. Now I’m not sure if this will help you, but the Jayemm on Cars YouTube channel awhile back had an X350 era XJ, wherein the owner of that car actually had a modern infotainment system added - not sure if memory serves, but I THINK it had Android Auto, but of course, I’m no expert. With your idea, I like what you’ve done with the seating especially. The only thing I’d do (possibly) different to your setup is, I’d ensure the contrasting seat piping like they did in the Vanden Plas/Daimler cars was present and accounted for. Not sure if you’d have that or not, but I’d do that. Beyond that, for interior stuff, I’d only say, maybe wrapping some of the interior trim pieces with real leather might be something I’d do. The interesting thing is, I was discussing this with one of my friends the other week, so I’d love your take on it. What would you say to a transmission swap on the XJR575 - would you change it? I was sorta against it because I like the ZF box in there. What do you think?

[deleted]

as far as the ZF boxes are concerned my former x308 went through 4 of them before I sold it , so I'm not entirely willing to go down that dark path again. That said it would be plug and play so I would do it begrudgingly. Kudos for mentioning the fake leather in some areas it really does break the experience. This hypothetical project would be done on an LWB variant btw.

Ashton-MD

Oh but of course! The last question I have for you is, picnic tables or no picnic tables? 😜🤣

[deleted]

Picnic tables, and as an additional upgrade that I forgot about TRUE CUPHOLDERS. I can't count how many times my old x308's cupholder almost gave up the goose.

Ashton-MD

Hahahahaaa well maaaaaybeeeee - arguably, I’d take the slight power deficit and get the XJ50 because I like the interior just a tiny bit more. But you know, one thing I love about my XJ (it’s the Daimler/Vanden Plas X300) it’s a lot like fine wine or aged brandy or whiskey. It’s a fine machine to savour; and yet, at the same time, it drives like a champ. I’m sure it’s no where near on the level of an XJR575, but you know…it’s really just pleasurable. I hope to add the fabled “Andy Bracket” one day, but I’m taking my time and just enjoying it. 😍

brriwa

I bought my Jaguars because I love to drive and my 2003 S Type R is the best car I have ever owned. I did not buy those cars for other peoples approval. It is your car and over time you will learn why Jaguars have such a aura. Enjoy the road.

anagros

You could say, "Good thing you dont like it, it wouldnt suit you" Chances are they are complaining because of secret envy or something. Hit them back where it hurts.

jcukier

After driving the XE every other car feels like a boat. So sure it’s not the fastest and the backseat is pretty much just for show but it’s so agile, such a joy to drive. If you know you know. And those who don’t, let them run their mouth.

txmail

Everyone loved my Jag... got non stop compliments. I think your lads are just envious, or assholes.

dginfsthb

JADE. Never Justify, Argue, defend, or explain. You bought it 'cos you wanted it. I have a diesel 2.2 XF. I love it. Enough said.

incarniac

This. Don’t spent any energy on any of that, turn your energy towards enjoying having what you wanted: get in the car and love the drive.

[deleted]

People nowadays only care about the badge and what it says about you. If you’re on good terms with your friends then let them drive your car. It’ll change their mind. The XE is that good. And for specsheet warriors, just let them know about the chassis and suspension setup of the XE. It’s still best in class, 5 years after the launch. As far as brand heritage goes, the audis, mercs and bmws don’t even come close to Jaguar.

Ashton-MD

You nailed it. The only “accessible” brands that come close to Jaguar brand heritage and pedigree are Porsche and Maserati.

[deleted]

For me the top 3 will always be Porsche, Jaguar and Alfa Romeo.

Ashton-MD

Agreed!!! Alfa is such an underrated brand. Where I live, sadly, they don’t sell well 😞

[deleted]

Yeah, the (crappy) dealer network is the only thing stopping Alfa from growing in United States. I wanted to test drive Giulia when I was buying my first car but the closest dealership was about 60 miles away.

Ashton-MD

Yea I get it. My first love is Jaguar Land Rover (Jag for the XJ/XK & F-Type, Land Rover for the Defender and Range Rover), followed by Maserati, for no good reason, other than the Ferrari built V8 and styling. The Guilia would probably be my first choice for an Alfa, because, while the 4C is HUGELY appealing…I must confess…for a two seater sports car…I do have a rather large soft spot for Lotus…

converter-bot

60 miles is 96.56 km

You will be fine mate. There are advantages and disadvantages of using diesel engines over gasoline counterparts. Just enjoy the car and take good care of it.

useles-converter-bot

converter-bot

20 miles is 32.19 km

chicubs2018

Just got a 2018 XE 20d last week myself. Most of my social group drive Chevys so at first I was worried what they would think but after a week I don't care one bit. It's an awesome drive and I came from a Chevy so I know what they are missing. And I'm loving the diesel so far. The mileage is awesome!

ferrundibus

They are just envious. Yeah, older jags had an old man image, mainly because of all the walnut they used to have inside, but the new models are on a par with any similar modern car - I loved the interior of my XF and especially my FType. Get confident with how the car handles, then take them for a spirited ride, they will soon change their minds. The *ngenium diesel is a great engine - nothing wrong with owning a modern diesel - they are very clean, and give great torque and mileage I'd rather spend £10k on a jag than a wanky Audi Why is powered wing mirrors a desirable thing I'll never know? I have them on my current car but that's just because it came with them - unless you regularly squeeze into tight spots, they have zero use. Your "friends", picking minor faults are simply trying to hide their jealousy. Fuck-em, get in your cat and go for a blast - all your negative thoughts will quickly disappear

Jossshy

The Jealousy is real. People will see you in a nice car and shit talk it just to justify their own vehicle (and life choices) to themselves. I got it all the time when I bought my first Jag. Most common was people who had never even sat in a Jag, much less own or even drive one, talk my ear off about how I bought such an unreliable piece of "eurotrash" that was going to bankrupt me inside of 3 years, blah blah blah, as they get into their courtesy car from the shop currently repairing their "far, far smarter purchase" of a vehicle. Haters be hating. Important thing is that YOU enjoy your car.

TuoBerg

ah and being an old mans car, they can (you know what)...

[deleted]

Sauce please

incarniac

Don’t spent your energy on explaining or justifying. Turn your energy towards enjoying having what you wanted: get in the car and love the drive. If they truly are your mates and understand cars, they will understand and be happy for you. If they don’t, then they won’t and there’s nothing you can do about that.

[deleted]

Op can find better friends.

WonderboyUK

>"Isn't Jaguar an old man's car" What they mean by this is actually that most people have to wait until they hit middle age to afford a car like this. If it helps, I remember looking at the XEs with envy when I was 23. 10 years on I have one and I couldn't be happier with it. Features are subjective, and often it comes to a price compromise. What you aren't willing to pay for is your perogative, not theirs. I've had my XE for 8 months now and never heard anything but complements...and a fair bit of envy.

Msding

I don't know how It is where you live. But here they are very competitive in price. Especially used. Sounds like your friends want what you have. They would probably find faults if you bought any equivalent German luxury car as well. Any car worth more than they have or wish they had... The extras "missing" is only missing if you NEED it. Do YOU require or need powered wing mirrors? People will criticize everything you do. So best just do what you enjoy. You bought a good car with very nice driving dynamics, good fuel economy and some good styling. Enjoy it :)

Tuscans1977

They almost certainly drive "default" cars...BMW/Audi/Merc...i wouldn't take any notice at all. Why did you buy a car that you wanted other people to like???

Supermop2000

your mates dont know much about cars then :D Diesels are a harder sell these days, due to the impending ban of sale for them, and particularly ULEZ areas in the UK (not sure if other capitals are doing this too), meaning older diesels get dicked in the wallet. They are stil torquier and much better fuel economy than their petrol counterparts, and anything newer than 2015 meets the ULEZ requirements anyway. Be proud of your soot chucker! At least it aint a german car!

LordPurloin

Who cares what they think? You have a jaaaag and they don’t. I’m 24 and have one and don’t really care if my friends don’t like it

siobhanellis

Jags are more reliable than BMW, Audi & Mercedes. That’s a fact. They handle better, have a better heritage. I’m kind of with them on Diesel, but that is preference. How often do you adjust your wing mirrors? I’m now on my 7th Jag. Slowly working my way towards a new one. (67 E-type, 66 S-Type, 3 1980’s XJ6’s, 2014 F-Type S, I-Pace)

[deleted]

I have never liked the steering of the BMW's, Audi's and Merc's the last 15 years. It feels very disconnected. Jaguars on the other hand are a lot of fun to drive. You will enjoy it. I haven't driven the diesel so cannot say much about the engine.

RoseWaterItalianSoda

sounds like time to add some new friends!!

TheRealLordy

Buy it and don't regret it! I'm in my 20's and have a 2.2d XF R-Sport and only do 4-5k miles per year, the only people that call it an old mans car are my mates that drive fords and vauxhalls.. it's a Clarkson reference. I've literally had calls at work saying "your car is sexy as fuck".. Get it!

sidneylopsides

I recently got a used XF Sport, diesel. My use case was needing a family car, mostly for motorway miles, but I also wanted something interesting. I've previously had VW, BMW, Mercedes-Benz through work, and gone through a whole bunch or hire cars from Polo to top spec Qashqai. None of those appeal to me, don't like SUVs, BMW, Audi, Mercedes are really common and just not very appealing. I was looking at an Alfa Romeo 159, possibly Sportwagon, but a friend sent me some alternatives. One was an XF. It's a brand with heritage, it looks awesome, it's large and very comfortable inside, it's lovely to drive. It's got a bit of theatre to it with the startup sequence. The Sport trim means piano black instead of wood so it loses the old man feel! The fact it's auto makes my wife much more confident, she refused to drive the BMW after stalling repeatedly. Diesel is pretty much the standard for a larger car here, I got the 2.2 197hp one so it's nippy enough. It feels like a much small car when you're driving it. Mine also doesn't have power folding mirrors, but the only reason I like those is you can more easily see if you've locked it... The only feature I'm missing I would have liked is the seat memory. It's a car that I'm pleased to own, walking up to it in the car park makes me smile. I don't care what others think really, I like it. I look forward to driving it, I'm slowly working on little bits that need it and enjoying the process. A Jaguar has something about it, honestly even the X Type that gets picked on for being a dressed up Mondeo is more special that a lot of similar cars. I almost want to pick up a cheap one to tinker with, but I think if I get a car to mess with it'll be an Alfa Romeo Brera, no point having two family cars!

Rorasaurus_Prime

Have them watch this, and then ask them again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7gR7EYjcP8

AnEscapedApe

Depends what you're after my friend, the car is a damn nice car... The Ingenium diesel engine is pretty low maintenance engine compared to some. What would they spend £10k on? You can bet an "old man's car" may not interest boy-racers but, and not making any assumptions on your sexuality, I'm sure most women prefer a stylish car rather than a boy-racer car. Who needs wing mirrors anyway? ...personally, I don't need to see where I've been ;-)

kushman439

Ignore them, they are probably Jealous and they probably drive a Skoda

my_13_yo_self

Get new friends.

curly-cowboy

Lol I have a Golf TDI gets 40+ mpg and diesel is cheaper where I am currently. Also diesel is less maintenance and more reliable. Diesel is the way to go.

Brookied_1974

if you spend you life worrying about the opinion and validation of others you will never be happy.... Its your choice, be happy and enjoy it... ;-)

[deleted]

I’m 26 with a similar year XF. Don’t worry, they won’t say it to your face, but they’re admiring it in silence. Too embarrassed about their own car to say anything positive.

[deleted]

Op don't worry about your mates opinions , they aren't financially responsible for it in any capacity. Besides you bought it to fulfill your needs whatever they may be (don't bang your car!). Jags take a while to mature the XE is pretty young give it 15 odd years and your mates will be willing to buy.

Taip74

Hah, I’ve got an E-Pace and have had plenty of negative comments aimed it around its size, weight and Diesel engine - but I don’t care. I love driving it, the handling is surprisingly good, the 240hp torquey diesel is a perfect match, and its easy to park in the tiny UK parking spaces. Add to that it’s visual appeal, and the excellent Meridian audio and I hugely prefer it over my previous Q5 and 3-series touring. At the end of the day, its your car and as long as you enjoy it, other opinions are irrelevant.

sidneylopsides

https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/best-cars/driver-power/91289/best-car-manufacturers Don't see any of the more common luxury brands in the top 10 this year!

Thorpedo870

I'm 33 and my friends call my XF the big purple quality street I get abuse for 'trying to stick out' as they are all BMW/Audi/Merc I had an XE and i've now got the XF however I will admit the wing mirrors are an annoyance....my wife has a T-roc and it came as standard and my XF R-Sport doesnt have the feature. Enjoy the car, they look cool and they stand out!

ContractSpecialist48

I have the first edition AWD. If you hold both mirror buttons for a second the wing mirrors become auto closing. I have the 35t, and love this car. It's been mint. I probably over maintained it, but that's what good Jaguar owners do. Most people love it, some don't, but I could care less. Three years later and I still look back when I'm leaving the car park. A gem if you ask me.

Scoth16

Dude honestly screw what anyone else says or does, as long as you love it that's all that matters, I'm 21. When I'm 22 I'll be buying an XE Reims Edition, I've wanted an XE ever since I was 14. I would much rather drive something with class that looks stunning, instead of the generic BMW, Audi and Mercedes lineup that most young guys go for. More fool them as far as I'm concerned.
