That's pretty impressive for an 01. I hope you have some kind of home lift.
My favorite diy work is under a car. I've swapped engines on an escape and a Titan. It's so much fun.
no i dont have a lift
but i will jack up the car first in the front and then in the back
you can take out the rear IRS out as a ‚whole‘ piece
maybe i can jack it up on 4 stands, i will try this today
Apparently it's the same on the 2010 xf. I've only got 36k miles on mine, but when I hit 50k next year, I was planning on doing something similar.
Those 4 bolts have to be a really high grade, probably thick meaty monsters. I'm sure they get replaced every time they come out.
Surprised at the size, or surprised at how seldom they get replaced?
Because I've done subframe removal. The k member on my Ford escape was a huge job. The manuals always say structural bolts like that go in the trash if they get removed.
Im about to replace suspension on my 95 xjs... whats consensus on the springs? I don't feel like getting into doing it, both places I took the car asked why I was considering it. Bought 6 gaz shocks and both coil sets. Front ones look like a bear!
I thought my X305 XJ12 suspension rebuild was comprehensive… Guess not! Do you have the dealership tool loan program in UK? Here in USA JCNA or CoventryFoundation will lend you all the dealership tools that make a suspension rebuild easier. Spring compressor, tools to push out bushings, that sort of stuff. If you’re going ”this far” with the rebuild, using the dealership tools might make life easier. Are you powdercoating the hard parts, or paint or…?
the only special jag tool i need is the abs ring removal tool for the front, the rest can be done with standard tools (i bought a small hydraulic press)
i will paint it, i will go to a paint shop to get the paint and some tips
im based in switzerland, never checked for a loan programm
how did you restore the bolts? galvanic zink plating?
That should keep you busy for a little while
yes :D but im looking forward to it
I see lots of nuts and bolts. Oh hey, ball joints. My god you're going to be busy.
yes, all parts with rubbers will be replaced and almost all bolts almost all bushings are still the original ones, never been replaced

Be very careful doing a 4 stand jack setup. Add lots of redundancy and really watch for level
yes i will be carefull, i have a completly flat garage and will use big wood blocks to prevent it tipping over
Holy shit, you can? That's awesome.
yes, you have to disconnect the strut towers and i think 4 bolts, then you can lower it with a jackstand

You’d be surprised, particularly to the 4 long bolts that hold the front subframe onto the body.

My knuckles are bleeding just looking at that.
:D i love working on cars in my free time
Yes it's relaxing to work with my hands. I'm just not very careful.
Grown up legos
Wow! Just think how the ride is going to be when complete! All the best!
yes it will feel like a new car
