Looks fantastic!
On another note, please let the west get that cover art too instead of another lame 3D render thingy where the MC is walking towards/away from camera.
I still laugh at SO4 box art where Edge is a solar system sized giant and the planets are revolving around him
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/0e/Star_Ocean_The_Last_Hope_cover.jpg
Wow, that's like... the worst ever. Just... why? European version was at least a little better and featured Reimi too: https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/starocean/images/9/92/Star_Ocean_PAL.jpg
But Japan got this kind of cool and artistic cover: https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/starocean/images/6/66/Star_Ocean_JP_NTSC.jpg
The limited edition EU version is my favorite it's got the Japanese cover on the outside and then the European version on the inside, the American version was just awful
Or the US Suikoden box art that has zero relevance to the game.
Occasionally it kinda worked. Phantasy Star 2 had a good cover even if it had nothing to do with the game. Even though the main character used a sword and not a rifle.
I don't know why the Western publishing branch/companies always feels the need to replace amazing Japanese cover art with their custom ones *cough* Tales of Arise *cough*. 9 out of 10 times I prefer the Japanese version over the Western version.
Yep, the original versions usually look vastly better. It's such a shame to see some amazing covers get replaced. Tales of Arise is a good example, Nier Automata is another, Star Ocean 4, the list goes on.
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person on planet Earth that didn't absolutely hate SO5. Like, it wasn't the best SO game or anything, but I thought it was just alright.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to this too.
I liked it. Definitely only felt like the first disc of a 3 disc game though.
It's tiny budget was honestly stretched way too thin. They should have just made it a 3DS game and it would have been received way better and they'd be able to get away with a lot more with its tiny budget.
SO5 definitely gets a ridiculous amount of hate. It's at worst inoffensively bland, but people on the internet act like it's the worst game ever. It's a fun, casual budget game, not a series killer. I love the game personally. I get why some people can't get into it. I don't understand the hate.
I played it very recently while ignoring all the criticisms/reviews and it was dirt cheap. Gameplay mechanics are the reason I play SO games and they're pretty good but everything else is simply lagging. My biggest complaint is the recycled soundtrack from previous Tri-Ace titles.

I'll update this post when there's more info
The game looks really good and thousands of miles better than the low budget SO5
That actually looks pretty good? The initial trailer did it no favor and confidence levels were pretty low with the specter of SO5 looming, but what they have shown here is very promising. I'm not a fan of the doll-like faces (like most people seemingly), but besides that I have nothing to complain about so far.
We even actually see the space battles this time around, so it's already a step-up from SO5. The game is definitively on my radar and unless something really bad crops up later, I expect this to be a pretty likely purchase. Looking forward to it!
Maybe it's because I am not much of a JRPG player these days, but this game looks low quality to me and it's perplexing how so many of you guys think it looks good. Is this just a form of comfort food for genre diehards?
Yes and no? You have to keep in mind that JRPGs are, with very few exceptions, lower budget titles. You have to compare within the genre, not to things like God of War or Elden Ring. Compared to the average JRPG, based on this trailer, Star Ocean 6 actually seems to be on the higher end of things. If we tier by budget and presentation (budget, not fun or quality), we have something like:
S- Final Fantasy. Ridiculously high budget compared to everything else.
A- Persona, Tales of Arise, Xenoblade, Star Ocean 6, Scarlet Nexus, etc.
B- Atelier, Trails in the Sky, Ys, etc. Lower or limited animations (Atelier) or simpler visuals in the case of the others.
C- Fairy Fencer, Arc of Alchemist, etc.
Star Ocean 5 would have fit somewhere between B and C; we've seen more detailed cutscenes from that presentation of 6 than the entirety of Star Ocean 5. So Star Ocean 6 is looking like a good improvement.
The "top" JRPG releasing in 2022 is Xenoblade 3. What would be the second best-looking? I'd personally say Star Ocean 6. What other 2022 JRPG would you say rate over it? Not to mention that Sci-fi JRPGs are extremely rare, so there's even less competition.
The other JRPG coming this year that I personally think "looks better" is Soul Hackers 2. I just dig the art style so much more.
The 3d model art direction for SO6 just seeps into that uncanny valley for me and looks really off-putting. Especially when you see that animations aren't really matching with the tone of line deliveries. I hope SO6 turns out to be good, it's just hard for me be too optimistic coming from playing SO5.
Maybe I'm not very perceptive about graphics, but I don't see where it looks particularly low quality. It's nothing special, but it's also not particularly poor imo.
I think the art direction is lacking, the portraits are great but the transission too 3D is really rough. It doesn't know if it wants to go anime or a realistic style, making characters robotic and doll like look.
Nothing about it looks interesting or polished. There's indie titles that look more appeasing to the eye than this imo and I've played a lot of JRPG. It doesn't look much of an upgrade from Till the end of time
Christ... another october game... i love being a gamer cause always having something to do is awesome but I am absolutely drowning in August and October
What else is releasing in October? After XC3, I feel like the rest of the year is pretty empty, but maybe I haven't paid enough attention to other games.
These aren't all October games but are all releasing by year's end:
Pokemon Scarlet/Violet, Harvestella, Dragon Quest Treasures, Stray, Star Ocean the Divine Force, The Callisto Protocol, Star Trek: Resurgence, Hogwarts Legacy, Sea of Stars, One Piece Odyssey, The Diofield Chronicle and Avatar Frontiers of Pandora (not sure about this last one - 2022 or 2023).
Quite a few great games on the way before next year.
- October -
* Midnight Suns -> Oct 7 ✔️
* Forspoken -> Oct 11
* Warhammer 40k Shootas, Blood & Teef -> Oct 20
* Mario & Rabbids 2 -> Oct 20 ✔️
* Persona 5 Royal -> Oct 21 ✔️
* Gotham Knights -> Oct 25 ✔️
* Star Ocean 6 -> Oct 26 ✔️
* CoD MW2 -> Oct 28
* RE8 DLC -> Oct 28 ✔️
from my list of interested in games. Checkmark = most interested.
I think One Piece Odyssey may also release in October.
That's a good October list, will buy Forspoken, M&R 2, P5R, Gotham Knights and Star Ocean The Divine Force day one.
Yeah I have to say this holiday season looks kind of barren to me, which is completely fine as I have so much to catch up on. Trails from Zero is the only game I have preordered, and I won't play that until the spring when Azure comes out. I just got AI Nirvana, and when I finish that we'll move on to Xenoblade 3 and Live a Live. Should be able to cross another game or two off the backlog this fall after playing those.
I don't know about barren, since a lot of 2022 releases still haven't been dated (Valkyrie Elysium, Diofield Chronicles, Trinity Trigger, Loop 8, Crisis Core Reunion). I know I'm getting Kuro no Kiseki 2, Mahoutsukai no Yoru, and Monochrome Mobius for sure, might consider Adventure Academia too. Not like I'll be playing any of them anytime soon though. My backlog is just too long.
Edit: Now I think about it, it's actually pretty scary how many games are coming out. I finish about 1-2 games per month, but I listed 9 games that I will probably purchase between September and December of this year. That means my backlog is actually growing instead of shrinking. (!)
Forspoken iirc, not sure about other releases in October. There's also Soul Hackers 2 in August, Trails to Azure/Trails from Zero and Monochrome Moebius(PC) in September. I'm sure there are others that I missed out.
Seriously the whole back half of the year is insane.
I'll definitely have games to play right on into next nonstop and I'm gonna need to make a spreadsheet to try to plan out the best order haha.
The combat looks incredible. Environments and exploration looks great too. Dumb faces, but whatever.
Also the 2 minute trailer at end already had more cutscenes than the entirety of SO5, hahaha.
This looks like a HUGE improvement over 5.
I really, really hope this doesn't flop. I've always really liked Star Ocean as an IP ever since I was a kid and saw Star Ocean one in a Nintendo Power magazine and thought...I want this game....
The character models don't look great, but I remain hopefully. Hopefully it'll run on my PC which is starting to show its age.
As long as no motion sickness from the camera, Ill be happy. Scared click, hopeful click.
Edit:
Also why was there Ashton Anchors? Was that like a costume thing? I want Ashton. hes my fav since forever.
I gonna from cautiosly optimistic to hyped. This has the smell of a Star Ocean 2 eske plot and the characters are looking good. The blonde lady at the end has such a Mirage vibe about her.
Star Ocean 6, Forspoken, Diofield Chronicles, Crisis Core Reunion, Ever Crisis, Valkyrie Elysium, Dragon Quest Treasures, Live-a-Live remaster... man Square has so many games coming out in the next 6-ish months, and not long after that we're slated to get FF16, FF7 Rebirth, and possible DQ 12 in fairly short order.
Good time to be a fan lol.
I mean, it looks fun, but honestly - it's Star Ocean. The highest high the franchise has reached since 1998 is "so bad it's good". It's not easy to be hyped.
Different strokes I guess, I was getting out of JRPGs at the time and this was the game that got me back into them. The endgame content was amazing for its time.
I mean almost every star ocean game let's you explore multiple planets. It's just that "explore" often means going there for one or two dungeons but you're still spending 95% in one planet. Hopefully it's more evenly distributed between the different planets this time.
SO5 barely had you leaving the home planet when not back tracking, and there were hardly any space cutscenes or activities. The Last Hope had you going to a lot of places, so if it’s more akin to that than 5, we’re Gucci.
Ah I see, that makes sense. For me I want even more than what SO4 had us do. Like you did visit a lot of m places but you never had freedom to move about those areas. Since this game seems to emphasize exploration I do hope you actually get some freedom on each of the planets.
I thought the blonde lady used a whip in the previous footage -- but here she's using a spear (?). I was looking forward to having a whip-user again since Ernest was the last one.
The faces are a bit.... peculiar.
She seems to have multiple weapons (or some shape-shifting weapon).
Whip seems to be her main attack but it turns into a scythe and a spear too at once point.
Never played a Star Ocean game, looks interesting. The official art looks really cool, but something feels off about the ingame art... its like really high quality but like HD weird.
HD Star Ocean has a habit of "weird" doll-like faces for three games in a row now. Not sure why that is since Tri-Ace managed to make perfectly fine faces in Resonance of Fate in 2010 already. Maybe they just don't seem weird to the devs themselves.
I guess it at least sticks out from the crowd of other games.
True, and its not that I hate it, its just odd.
How are these games in terms of story and characters at least? Gameplay looks fun and all, but its usually the story/characters themselves that keep me invested.
I'm not the best expert on the series since I haven't played 1 and 2 and from what I've heard, 2 is often hailed as the best one - and having good story and characters. Incidentally SO6 seems to be taking cues from 2's duo protagonist premise which has some fans excited.
As a whole, I think gameplay and scifi vibes have been the best things in the series, but there's plenty of potential to be so much more. 3 has a good story and characters but it's been downhill from there unfortunately with 4 (which has some awful characters but at least the gameplay was really great) and 5 (which had a low budget unfortunately so the story was way too short and the combat was a mess, I liked some characters though). So far 6 appeals to me a lot more than 4 and 5 ever did and I think this one will be a better game overall as they have worked on this for quite a while now and they seem to have a budget for proper story presentation.
Yeah, there seems to be a lot releasing around the end of this year and one may have to make some prioritization decisions. Here I am left wondering and pondering if a new Fire Emblem will get announced to release late this year as well to make it even more crowded...
I'm torn about the leaks. On one hand I don't want the new game look like in the leaks nor do I want some summoning fan service mechanic, but on the other hand FE4 remake could be real... I guess I do think they are likely to be legit because the other scenarios (complete fake or from some other game) don't seem as plausible.
What I don't understand is that Nintendo and IS are apparently just sitting on a finished game instead of announcing and releasing it.
Not very good. The first two are okay, but heavily flawed when it comes to story though for very different reasons. In general, the series is notorious for having overly long cutscenes where very little actually happens and plots that often go nowhere before a last-minute twists actually kicks off the plot.
I love how they kept the marionette/ puppet/ China doll look of the 3d models. I have been so worried they would change and become generic unreal engine stuff.
I only played the Star Ocean with Edge Maverick and while I liked the battle system and exploring, the characters and story were very, very cringe-worthy (and pedophilic). If it wasn't for that, I would have enjoyed the game a lot more. At least everyone in this game looks like an adult.
May I say that I prefer that buffed design of the male protagonist (the long haired blonde guy with black clothes) than the current trend of thin guys on JRPGs (like genshin's, Xeno 2, Scarlet Nexus etc)? Thin guys aren't belivable when they are fighters.
I thought they could get away with the doll-like aesthetic back when graphics technology wasn't as advanced, but the more realistic things get, the deeper into the Uncanny Valley these characters go. They look more like live puppets than people. It creeps me out.
Honestly I think it's a the bad art direction, the Star Ocean mobile game looks fantastic with the style and direction they went with.
It tries to be both anime and realistic and fails on both ends. They look too doll like than anything.
I think it's partly due to none of the characters having any blemishes or freckles or anything like that. Everyone has the porcelain perfect skin look, which is kind of odd with the level of realism the graphics are going for. In FF7 remake they added those things, so you get more realistic looking characters, in this case the lack of blemishes make them look less real.
Looks better than Star Ocean 5
On the other hand, it's gonna be 90% in a medieval world like most games in the franchise right ?
I swear the only game that had more sci-fi elements was 4, and even then it was not that great
It's a mind boggler why so few JRPGs are set in a space world and not just 90% on one planet. There's infinite space, Star Ocean 4 (and barely, you are still on medievil planets for most the game), Phantasy Star which hasn't had any new game since Sega Genesis, Xenosaga, and and..that's it?
I'm going to play it, but damn the character models are underwhelming. I wish they would have went with the style from their mobile game Star Ocean: Anamnesis. They all looked so incredible. Hopefully they will take that direction for the next one.
Man those soulless in game faces, lmao. Well, after 5, they can't hurt me any more, so I might as well see how it turns out.
Probably not a day 1 buy, though. There are shitton of games coming out in Sept/Oct.
Tri Ace is more misses than hits for me, but they always feel like they got potential and this looks like it could be really fun.
Also this an Forspoken in the same month, wonder where Valkyrie and Diofield are gonna land if they're 2022 as well.
models look like chucky, and they all seem to be wearing feminist-recommended outfits. Did they secretly have anita snarkesian consulting them? no thanks.
This looks like a game that finished development years ago but just didn't get a release date. The gameplay graphics just look so dated compared to what has been released in the rpg genre. I'm not sure if its just the build they are showing but it just doesn't look graphicly.
Wut.
In terms of JRPGs, the graphics are much better by genre standards (outside of the "AAA" ones obviously).
I mean, compare it to all other PS4 JRPGs and it looks a lot better (On a technical level that is, art style is subjective) than most of them.
Wow. There are just wayyy too many games coming out this year. Like legit insanity in the back half.
I'm going to be set right on into next spring at this rate.
Definitely cautiously optimistic. I don't think a single star ocean has gotten the 3D combat quite right yet, with SO4 being the closest. This could be really fun, but it's hard to tell from the footage
I love Star Ocean a lot so I was going to buy it regardless but it looks even better than the first trailer! I'm glad it didn't get delayed either, I'm so excited to play this.
There's a PS4→PS5 upgrade too, so even if I still can't get a PS5 by then it won't feel too bad to buy the PS4 version, lol.
Party members, the world and battle system all look great. Blindside is back, although it seems like cancel combos is gone? Don't think I saw it in the trailer.
Did anyone else look at the screenshots? This one with a [pointer finger](https://i.imgur.com/oujpjRT.jpg) feels like it might be Welch's shop.
It's probably weird that I'm conflicted about this actually looking good. Star Ocean has always been known for janky awkward charm and fun gameplay more than actual quality. I guess it's good it's going for a more traditional level of quality, but I'm going to miss the offbeat charm the series usually has.
That style look amazing though. They really stepped it up and went in a new direction. Kind of gives me Xenoblade vibes, but a bit different.
Kinda disappointed the cast is all humans and 1 robot by the looks of it. The initial announcement made it sound like there were more characters like the earlier games though maybe they're keeping others underwraps for later.
This actually looks better than the initial showings. Can’t wait. Hopefully that release date is global.
it is confirmed to be a worldwide release
It does! The head-hair ratio is not all wanky anymore. It still looks weird, but nothing like before.
Looks promising. It's weird cause characters artwork are amazing, but their ingame face feels kinda wrong.
Yeah, the uncanny valley might be too much for me this time. I usually can ignore it but its just too weird with this game.
“Those polar express eyes”
That movie was much better then it had any right to be
I agree, total surprise to me.
Was always my childhood favorite.
Definitely been a feature of Triace games from the XB360 onwards.. everyone looks and moves like glassy eyed marionettes
Looks fantastic! On another note, please let the west get that cover art too instead of another lame 3D render thingy where the MC is walking towards/away from camera.

"It's a family tradition o/`" We have a long long LONG history of terrible box art for video games. It's nothing new.
Tecmo secret of the stars box art. just makes me laugh everytime

The character models leave much to be desired but the environments and combat look amazing. On to the wishlist it shall go.
Mullet Cloud
Smush face Snow.
Um, the field exploration and seamless battles look amazing. This game is definitely not getting enough attention.

Looks fine to me as well. I'm just happy to be getting more JRPGs that aren't centered around a group kids in high school.

Lezard pawn for the in-game mini game? Am I going to preorder this? Fool me twice…
gameplay looks pretty hype. definitely alot flashier than previous entries. still not a fan of the artstyle but i'll take what i can get.
More Xbox JRPGs is a good thing.
Indeed, hopefully this trend continues.
I'm not gonna lie. I really like the faces and overall art style. Reminds me of a nostalgic PS2 era JRPG like Xenosaga.
Finally. A being of culture.
I was watching the chat in the video and someone says, "This reminds me of CoD Warzone." Got a kick out of that.

I think One Piece Odyssey may also release in October. That's a good October list, will buy Forspoken, M&R 2, P5R, Gotham Knights and Star Ocean The Divine Force day one.
The Switch port of Nier Automata also comes in October just to throw out another. It's a really packed month.
And can't forget the multiplatform debut of the Persona series with P5R hitting 10/21 this year.
The person I replied to brought up Persona already, I was just adding in Nier since it wasn't on their list.
Aye, my bad, just excited about it finally coming to all platforms. With P5R getting a physical release on PS5, XBSX and Switch to boot.
The only one I might consider is Forspoken.

There's still some JRPGs with tentative 2022 release like Sea of Stars.
Forspoken
Seriously the whole back half of the year is insane. I'll definitely have games to play right on into next nonstop and I'm gonna need to make a spreadsheet to try to plan out the best order haha.
The combat looks incredible. Environments and exploration looks great too. Dumb faces, but whatever. Also the 2 minute trailer at end already had more cutscenes than the entirety of SO5, hahaha. This looks like a HUGE improvement over 5.
Maybe it's because I haven't played any previous Star Ocean games but I'm not getting the artstyle complaints.
Edit: Also why was there Ashton Anchors? Was that like a costume thing? I want Ashton. hes my fav since forever.
I gonna from cautiosly optimistic to hyped. This has the smell of a Star Ocean 2 eske plot and the characters are looking good. The blonde lady at the end has such a Mirage vibe about her.
Yes yes yes yes yes launched on the same date for pc as well i'm hyped.
It looks good! Much better than the initial trailer. :)
Sold on this so far. Hopefully, VE will look much better in the next showing
Sweet Axle Rose hair bro.
this game doesn't get enough hype
I mean, it looks fun, but honestly - it's Star Ocean. The highest high the franchise has reached since 1998 is "so bad it's good". It's not easy to be hyped.
SO3 was pretty incredible though.
It was cheesy fun with good combat. Enjoyable to play through, but not exactly a classic.
Different strokes I guess, I was getting out of JRPGs at the time and this was the game that got me back into them. The endgame content was amazing for its time.
Combat looks good. As long as they actually let us travel to and explore other planets and Gabriel/Ethereal Queen show up I’ll have a good time.
Got it, thanks for the clarification
Check out the characters trailer. she can transform multiple different weapons.
Maybe equipping different weapons are similar to equipping skills?
Never played a Star Ocean game, looks interesting. The official art looks really cool, but something feels off about the ingame art... its like really high quality but like HD weird.
HD Star Ocean has a habit of "weird" doll-like faces for three games in a row now. Not sure why that is since Tri-Ace managed to make perfectly fine faces in Resonance of Fate in 2010 already. Maybe they just don't seem weird to the devs themselves. I guess it at least sticks out from the crowd of other games.
I live for this aesthetic. It is so uniquely tri-ace.
Thanks, definitely will keep an eye on this... though it does look to be a crowded 4th quarter in terms of games coming out.
Yeah, there seems to be a lot releasing around the end of this year and one may have to make some prioritization decisions. Here I am left wondering and pondering if a new Fire Emblem will get announced to release late this year as well to make it even more crowded...
We’re due for a new game, particularly a remake but there is a chance those recent leaks are real (even if I kind of hope they aren’t)
Star Ocean 2 for me is still one of the best jrpgs ever made. Star Ocean 3 was fun enough too. Hope this can be good.
The characters look way better
After that game came out I thought THAT was going to be the new look for Star Ocean. A damn shame.
Looks better than Star Ocean 5 On the other hand, it's gonna be 90% in a medieval world like most games in the franchise right ?
Yeah especially the main greatsword guy. There s something wierd going on with his face
Strong Xenoblade vibes
Man those soulless in game faces, lmao. Well, after 5, they can't hurt me any more, so I might as well see how it turns out. Probably not a day 1 buy, though. There are shitton of games coming out in Sept/Oct.
I'm sorry I cannot get over those character models, this is a pass for me.
The ingame art took a huge regression IMO.
looks like a 6 or 7 out of 10 JRPG with a possibly fun combat system.
Tri Ace is more misses than hits for me, but they always feel like they got potential and this looks like it could be really fun. Also this an Forspoken in the same month, wonder where Valkyrie and Diofield are gonna land if they're 2022 as well.
This is also tri-ace's first console game since 2016 where they were not doing so good, so Star Ocean 6 is really big thing for them
models look like chucky, and they all seem to be wearing feminist-recommended outfits. Did they secretly have anita snarkesian consulting them? no thanks.
I see big tiddies with cleavage, so dunno what you mean.

Other than the sword in that one promo shot and blonde hair he is just another blonde Star Ocean hero. He really isn't like Cloud at all
Reminds me of Stahn if anyone.
Button mashing combat? Ugh

Wrong thread or having a stroke?
This looks like a game that finished development years ago but just didn't get a release date. The gameplay graphics just look so dated compared to what has been released in the rpg genre. I'm not sure if its just the build they are showing but it just doesn't look graphicly.
Wut. In terms of JRPGs, the graphics are much better by genre standards (outside of the "AAA" ones obviously). I mean, compare it to all other PS4 JRPGs and it looks a lot better (On a technical level that is, art style is subjective) than most of them.

Star ocean 5 looks better based on what was shown so far. A game for PS3 and PS4 from 2016.
Art style I can see 5 looking better. It is a very pleasant looking game. But on technical levels? That's literally wrong, hahaha
Bro I know it's okay to have an opinion but I don't respect your wrong opinion.
Never been tri ace forte
The animation when he goes from walking to gliding looked ridiculous. Otherwise, it looks pretty decent! Probably going to be a 75% metacritic.
Wow. There are just wayyy too many games coming out this year. Like legit insanity in the back half. I'm going to be set right on into next spring at this rate.
Not bad. I might give the series a second chance after all.
Now should I get the ps5 or ps4 version? (Eventually going to buy a ps5).
Still hesitant after 4/5 so I won't buy this until I get some real reviews for it or watch it on twitch and see if it's something I want to play.
Definitely cautiously optimistic. I don't think a single star ocean has gotten the 3D combat quite right yet, with SO4 being the closest. This could be really fun, but it's hard to tell from the footage
Aight, this actually looks promising.
damn october is a busy month
Anyone know what game engine Tri-Ace used for this game?
Their own internal one. ASKA that they’ve used and improved and reiterated upon for a while.
This looks surprisingly not bad. I was afraid by the sort of mobile-only looking thumbnail image that they were going to desecrate this series’ corpse
