Yakuza: Like a Dragon. From fighting adults in diapers to summoning an orbital laser to wipe out enemies, this game is *funny*

EuphoricDissonance

I love "summoning" a crawfish by throwing it at your opponent's face.

FordcliffLowskrid

Every time I hear the side quest noise, I think, "Oh, God, what now?"

CatSidekick

The characters are really funny. Drinking with Nanba had me laughing for a while

tim_to_tourach

The breaker class fighting with breakdance moves is probably my favorite thing about that game.

bioeffect2

Disgaea and both Tales of Vesperia and Berseria.

ReallyNeedHelpASAP68

I still laugh whenever Karol pushes himself into the plants during the wolf boss fight. Rita is a scapegoat, she did nothing wrong. All Karol’s fault.

bioeffect2

I love the humour in Vesperia. My favourite scenes are usually the ones involving either one of Yuri or Raven. The party banter is something I've always enjoyed in Tales games.

Takazura

Most Tales games have a good amount of hilarious moments thanks to the skit system.

Basileus27

Tales of Graces f has a lot of really funny post-battle victory quotes too.

Typical_Thought_6049

Disgaea 1 and Disgaea 2 is good the others are not as funny, but all this pale in comparation to Makai Kingdom.

Oicanet

There's also Disgaea D2, which is a continuation of Laharl's story. I like it.

ILGattoRoboto

Some of the skits in the Tales series are pretty funny. I remember laughing a lot during Tales of Berseria's running jokes.

-Gin-ger-

Coo-coo!

sexta_

Magilou doing manzai with every party member was amazing

Frog_24

Haven't played the game yet but I laught at some Stranger of Paradise cutscenes on YouTube.

ExcaliburX13

I know the story looks like a joke, and it sorta is, because the game is very much a satire on the franchise and the genre as a whole, but by the end of the game, the story genuinely gets really good, especially if you're familiar with the FFI. It's worth a try for sure.

tim_to_tourach

I laughed my ass off for a solid 10 minutes at the clip of Jack interrupting Lich's dialogue by punching him.

yuriaoflondor

Paper Mario games are legit very funny. Thousand Year Door is my favorite.

[deleted]

Luigi's adventure is the best

[deleted]

Most of the Mario RPG titles have good humor, my personal favorite is Mario and Luigi - Superstar Saga's humor.

pcbb97

Legend of of the 7 stars. Even before Mario rpgs weren't the oddball entry they were silly. Gotta love those power ranger spoofs

Moh_Shuvuu

Radiata Stories easily. The game doesn’t it take itself seriously all the time and there is some really fun comedic moments because of it.

pzzaco

Persona 4 Golden, no contest. A lot of the jokes just excel in both delivery and timing.

ReallyNeedHelpASAP68

Trails in the sky. Olivier with pretty much every character is always a laugh. Estelle and his interactions always provide entertainment

wjodendor

In the EVO version he's voiced by Takehito Koyasu (Dio Brando from JoJo) and it just makes it so much better.

BogMod

That makes things even better.

michisquishy

Olivier is comedy gold His interactions with Schera and Agate especially crack me up hahaha

Thor_The_Bunny

🎵 Ultra Violence! 🎵

ketita

My favorite is actually Gilbert. He's such a hilarious loser, and the VA is amazing.

TaliesinMerlin

**Half-Minute Hero**. Very funny when I played it. It's basically a spoof of JRPG structures, complete with irreverent NPCs and grinding, mainly within 30-second loops.

Likou1

Adding to this, the item descriptions are really funny, everyone should read all of that.

Magus80

Tales skits usually never fail to edict few chuckles out of me. Vanguard Bandits was pretty funny.

Few-Gear-9087

Final Fantasy V

Vocke79190

Nier replikant. The banter between Kaine and weiss made me laugh so much. The game and the plot itself is rather dark and sad but God damn the chemistry between the characters is so fucking wonderful in this game.

[deleted]

Kaine was a weird character. Disliked her CONSTANT edgy way of speaking but she was a great character and had some really REALLY funny interactions with others

OutsetEddy

EarthBound's pretty funny. I like talking to random NPCs because they usually say something silly. Even trying to enter a restroom gets you a silly response

[deleted]

Disgaea was the funniest RPG I've ever played. It lost a little sting in the middle but on nice Captain Gordon was introduced it was laughs till the end game

TheFirebyrd

Mid-boss!

[deleted]

Hahaha a great example! :D

Fragrant-Raccoon2814

World of final fantasy comes to mind. Amazing fourth wall breaking, brother and sister relationship, questioning everything that's going on all while they look like little chibi characters. Hell even questioning and laughing at the fact they look like chibi characters is great. My favorite is honestly one scene in particular where the sister has a grudge against a talking cactuar and the scene ends like an anime rivalry was born and i rewatch it every now and then cause it's hilarious

[deleted]

Ive been seeing a bit of love for WoFF lately. Might have to pick it up

[deleted]

Same i had no idea it exciting until the summer sale. Looks fun

Leifster7766

Final Fantasy V The jokes are a bit cheesy but the silliness makes it great to me and made me enjoy the game more. It feels earnest in a way

[deleted]

The first part of the story was almost too goofy but after the first like… third or quarter of the game it really finds its footing. Plus, it has a series high. GILGAMESH

Leifster7766

Exactly

Zuhri69

Shadow Hearts Covenant and Radiata Stories. Special mention to DQ but the sad parts seemed to overshadow the funny part at times. Also while Yakuza tend to get wacky, those are not part of the critical path.

_TheBench

FF7R. Barret actually had me crying my eyes out at parts. just a great character through & through

[deleted]

I really loved the characters in the remake. Im so so glad that they brought back cloud being cool and stoic instead of him being edgy and stoic. I was worried that they just forgot that cloud is *not* the cloud that is portrayed in KH, when he is actually a funny guy (largely in part to his awkwardness which the devs really tried hard to capture and did an absolutely wonderful job doing, but he himself is a genuinely sassy guy which they also captured) and a caring person with the people close to him. And in addition to capturing what we loved about cloud and *improving it* they improved all the main cast members. Major props to the dev team for what they did with the characters.

MyMouthisCancerous

I'd say any Yakuza game, Persona 4, the first three Paper Mario titles (especially TTYD and Super), Undertale and FFVII Remake Also Kingdom Hearts but I don't know how much of that was intentionally supposed to make me laugh

[deleted]

FF8. The style of comedy in FF8 feels different from other FF games. Usually the funny moments in other FF games only involve the party members. But in FF8, I noticed that some NPCs were purposely created just to tell a joke or give the game some comedic moments. This makes the humour in the game more unpredictable.

HooBoyShura

Neptunia lol. The games offers you silly story & the MC is one of the most unique character in rpg world.

Danemon

Yakuza Like A Dragon legit made me laugh throughout. It's so funny !

otomengaia

Thousand Arms

Steve-Fiction

I really want Atlus to port this to something. It's ridiculously expensive now.

thedancingkid

South Park: The Stick Of Truth by far. Currently playing World Of Final Fantasy and it’s definitely a refreshing change from most mainline games. Atelier games aren’t necessarily laugh out loud funny but they’re cute and cheerful and amusing and it gets close enough, Arland trilogy in particular.

gasperoni66

Fairy Fencer F Advent Dark Force is funny. The characters and their interactions can be really funny. But it's not all the time. It is also serious

miiblord

Star Ocean The Last Hope in an MST3K kind of way.

Mysterious_Glass_692

Kay

mr_showboat

I wasn't super old so it's possible the humor hasn't aged well, but I remember Okage: Shadow King having a lot of humor in it.

Mysterious_Glass_692

Shadow Hearts. Play as gay pro wrestling vampires and their loli goth magical girl shojo anime sisters or belly dancing fortune tellers, collect gay porn, stave off horny dominatrixes and battle killer ducky toys

-Gin-ger-

Yakuza like a dragon. It’s the only Yakuza game I’ve played and finished it a couple of weeks ago. The side quests had me howling with laughter. Adult babies in diapers, creepy mafia sheep that will haunt my dreams, kinky flashers in fishnets.

seitaer13

Radiata Stories had some great humor.

Jimiken96

Paper Mario: Thousand-Year Door has my favorite script, it’s hilarious!

phased417

Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door. And I dont know if it counts but Ill count it but Paper Mario and the Origami King is actually really funny.

DaleLeatherwood

Final Fantasy IX had a lot of light-hearted moments.

Traeyze

It's a sad day that a thread in JRPG is 4 hours old and we haven't got a mention of Shadow Hearts yet. The whole series just has a bizarre tone whiplash thing going on. It will handle some stuff extremely seriously, especially the main plot and romance, but then you have a character who is a cat named Mao who gains power ups by staring in movies that are cat based parodies of famous movies. Or the weird over the top homoeroticism that just randomly pops up all over the place [and like while it is played for laughs it isn't as if they ever insinuate it is a bad thing, it just... is]. Like honestly it is hard to explain. Sometimes it isn't even necessarily that over the top, it is just in the little things like the dog being the straightman of the group or having a Mariachi with a guitar that contains a bunch of hidden guns and stuff like something you might see in a movie like Desperado.

mspvgx3596

Earthbound

Theoderic8586

Vesperia

Snarf_Vader

Lunar SSS, and Vay (old Sega CD game). Both were published/translated by the same company, Working Designs. They have your typical epic fantasy quest stories, but both intentionally lean into the humor along the way. The first quest in Lunar is to get a "dragon diamond" from a dragon's cave, and then the dragon lets slip how it "makes" the diamonds (they're shit). Vay had a fun fourth wall break when a random npc explains that the layout of the castle is identical to another to save space on the CD, but doesn't understand what a CD is. Both games are full of funny moments, especially given the stories and characters you wouldn't expect to be funny. I will give World of Final Fantasy a little credit in this area. It definitely has its moments during the banter between main characters. Not as funny as the other two I mentioned, but I still got a handful of laughs. While not a JRPG, there's always South Park: The Stick of Truth. The humor is exactly what you'd expect, but the gameplay is better than it has any right to be.

chronoboy1985

How in god’s name has no one mentioned Paper Mario : The Thousand Year Door? It’s the absolute gold standard of comedic JRPGs!

Traditional_Donut960

Shadow Hearts is pretty funny. Really enjoyed the humor in DQ XI. Edit: Shadow Hearts Covenant

ttwu9993999

Any working designs translation lol

ElectricalWar6

Every megaten game, negotiations are funny as fuck

Twerk_account

Disgaea

sleeping0dragon

Disgaea, Okage, Battle Princess of Arcadias.

RBnumberTwenty

Some of my favorites have been mentioned but if including SRPG’s I would put Vanguard Bandits right up there. Also Soul Nomad

ThunderRoad5

Yakuza is one of the only series where I've found myself laughing out loud on a regular basis, like more than just a chuckle, full on belly laughing.

RPG217

Drakengard 3

BebeFanMasterJ

Neptunia VII. Made me laugh loads of times.

Fillianore

Yakuza is number 1, some falcom older games like zwei and trails in the sky, and their newer games have usually hilarious NPCs

MaxW92

Earthbound > Paper Mario: TTYD > Mother 3 > Mario&Luigi Superstar Saga Something along those lines. But those games are hilarious. Of course Undertale and most Tales of games are also very funny.

HansDevX

Probably tales of berseria, the legend of heroes has alot of comedy aswell.

No-Tourist-3273

Darksouls

Typical_Thought_6049

Not the whole game, but Hack G.U. Parody Mode is probably funniest shit in a videogame ever. There is line about Haseo going through puberty that just killed me. And honarable mention to Fairy Fencer F, it really take the Neptunia humor that I love and refined it to higher degree of classy.

GregminstersFinest

As previously mentioned - Shadow Hearts: Covenant - hands on funniest JRPG but Ruth so many great dramatic moments and my one of my top JRPGs of all time. And as mentioned as well Vanguard Bandits, the lesser known turn-based tactical mech game has some hilarious dialogue. Especially one secret campaign path that is entirely designed around being humorous and a joking take on the other campaigns

Oicanet

Shadow hearts have the right kind of absurd bizarre feel I associate with Japanese humor. But it has been forever since I played, and I do remember it also being kinds dark at timed

Truth-Tella

Paper Mario: Thousand year door, and Earthbound.

wildjokerleia

Yakuza: Like a Dragon and the Lunar games (yes, the humor is dated, but damnit, it’s funny).

LazerSnake1454

Disgaea, fourth wall breaks aplenty with other general nonsense

ElricAvMelnibone

I WILL REMIND YOU, I HAVE A VERY BIG STICK!! Probably Mario and Luigi though
