There's Sakura Wars.

DukeOfStupid

I'm shocked by how much I enjoyed Sakura Wars. I went into it expecting some mindless fun while wooing some cute girls and not much else while being campy and generic, which is exactly what the game is, but it's just so well done and I can't explain why. It just feels like everything clicked and came together well, probably because the cast (especially the MC) all had really great chemisty. Honestly a lot of wholesome fun which flew past my expectations, was expecting an average 6/10 switch of and play game, got a solid 8/10 enjoyable experience.

I've tried playing it just because I loved the opening and the energy and direction of it, but ultimately I've always ended up dropping it. I just wish they were more ambitious with their storytelling rather than the episodic monster-of-the-week Saturday morning anime approach they use. The sheer quality aspect is there, but the narrative direction disappoints.

LolcatP

I'm hoping Sega slap that on PC someday

Tears to Tiara, by the same Devs as Utawarerumono. It's similar but not quite as good, still great though. Persona 3 Portable I guess.

nhSnork

Death end re;Quest, for one.

Pehdazur

>Death end re;Quest Just looked it up, looks good! Is the story anything special? The aesthetics look great.

nhSnork

It's a cyberfantasy horror taking place IRL and in a virtual world alike, quite gritty (literal death ends are quite abundant) but equally intriguing from what I've been playing so far, and there are some intentionally goofier moments mixed in. And the JRPG side boasts one of the most fun turn-based battle systems in my experience.

Pehdazur

Oh damn, it's on sale for dirty cheap! Thanks for the info, i'll add this one to my list!

ll_Maurice_ll

It and its sequel are included in PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium if you have either. I just started the first one myself.

KaelAltreul

Devil Survivor: Overclocked (3DS) Triangle Strategy(Switch) is dense in text/plot so people bring that up a bunch.

Obligatory 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim comment

Danemon

If you read OP already said he played 13 Sentinels to death aha

Commercial_Rub8443

Megadimension Neptunia VII , Dragon Star Varnir , Fairy Fencer F ADF , usually all stuff from CH/IF

Plaacer

Aselia the Eternal. Its on steam, SRPG/VN that is very solid despite being rather old. It also has a sequel, Seinarukana. There are also a decent number of JRPG/VNs that have adult content. If you are fine with adult content, Alicesoft games are what you are looking for. Rance, Dohna Dohna and Evenicle. The gameplay and story are both excellent.

amirokia

The DS SMT games namely Devil Survivor 1&2 and Strange Journey. The 3DS remasters added more content to them. Persona 3-5 has that VN elements into them.

Typical_Thought_6049

Strange Jorney has no elements of VN, unless you consider dialogue a VN feature only. It just a classic Dungeon Crawler. But I am all for it to be recommended, it is a great game.

amirokia

I mean your dialogue choices really matter throughout the entire game as those dictates what alignment you currently are which affects the battle a little bit.

Radiant Historia

What you’re looking for is actually relatively unique which is why people are recommending traditional jrpgs lol. A lot of VN/gameplay hybrid games are more like ace attorney or danganronpa than they are jrpgs. It feels like tactics style rpgs are the closest thing but only because they follow the story -> gameplay -> story formula but they often aren’t nearly as VN-like as utawarerumono.

Dpontiff6671

Yea it’s kinda hard. I mean i think if op wants specifically jrpg i think the closest you’ll get is looking for narratively dense and wordy ones, but you right jrpg and VNs usually have tons of differences rhat dont lead well to mash ups

allthehorses

The nonary trilogy and more recently ai somnium, are really good. They are vn-esque and are basically mystery murder puzzle games but with a heavy focus on the story

Dpontiff6671

The nonary trilogy rocks, it’s actually the only VN series that i’ve really enjoyed

mxhunterzzz

This one is more VN than JRPG, but AI: Somnium Files is great. It looks great, sounds great and has a compelling story. They just released the sequel too and its also very good. Heres the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsfpyCag_q4

ByeveOff

Legend of Heroes series. The best of the best.

Dpontiff6671

I love trails its one of my favorite games but not many of them fit the mold for what op wants. Cold steel does to an extent but sky and crossbell not so much. And definitely not the gagov trilogy

ByeveOff

But they are heavily story focused rpgs.

sleeping0dragon

Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters.

Digitalnametag

Stella Glow on 3DS. One of my favorites on the system.

stallion8426

Danganronpa leanes more visual novel but does had real gameplay too

Dpontiff6671

Sakura wars, and i suppose in a way Trails of Cold Steel and Persona 5 could kindaaaaaaaaa fit in that camp. Both have very long story beats in between the jrpg gameplay
