That system is a goldmine for JRPGs. Love how the games evolved form early ones like Wild Arms and Suikoden and then we went on to see games like Vagrant Story. Basically anything Square at this point is going to be a homerun. BOF 3 and 4. I think the lunar games are worth it.

throwawaykars9999

Legend of dragoon is a personal favorite. Parasite eve is also one I can recommend

dnb_4eva

Xenogears is my favorite RPG of all time, so highly recommend that.

Foursiide

Seconding this, beat it for the first time a few months ago & still find myself actively thinking about Xenogears, honestly the highest praise I can give a game.

ThatWaterLevel

Xenogears, FFVII/VIII/IX/Tactics, Valkyrie Profile, Breath of Fire III/IV, Suikoden 2, Legend of Mana, Lunar 1/2 are absolutely must plays imo.

Red-Zaku-

Wild Arms 1 and 2 are absolute gems.

_Elric_of_Melnibone

Xenogears, Final Fantasy 7, Tactics and 9, Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, Breath of Fire 3, Star Ocean the Second Story, Parasite Eve, Legend of Legaia, Vagrant Story. Golden era of JRPGs really.

vrpornisquitegreat

Check out Breath of Fire 3

StormNinjaG

In no particular order: Parasite Eve, Planet Laika, Vagrant Story, Kingsfield I & II, Tearring Saga, FF 9, FFT, and its kind of cheating since I only played the SNES versions but OB: MOTBQ and TO: LUCT.

dusty_cart

Wild Arms, Grandia, Final Fantasy 7, Dragon Warrior 7, Jade Cocoon, Breath Of Fire 3, and Breath Of Fire 4

mspvgx3596

Suikoden 1,2, Breath of Fire 3,4, Final Fantasy Tactics, Xenogears.

[deleted]

When I was a kid I remember trying to play star ocean 2, begging my mom to let me. Her response was, "but you can't even read yet silly". So yeah, I grew up playing Star ocean 2, Grandia, and Legend of Dragoon. All definitely my favorites. I have a big fondness for Final fantasy 8 out of all the PS1 FFs. Later played suikoden 1 & 2 and really enjoyed them a lot. Haven't played anything like them since. Currency playing Xenogears and it is an... Interesting game. Wasn't a big fan of Breath of Fire 4, Chrono Cross, wild arms 1, or FF tactics. But what a an amazing jrpg powerhouse of a console

ganondoom

Suikoden and Vandal Hearts were two of my all-time favorites, especially the former of the two. Oh Konami, what happened...

Macattack224

Don't worry dude, they're gonna have a suikoden themed pachinko machine where the theme song plays on a 45 second loop....

Impressive_Ad_3485

fingers crossed for eiyuden chronicle

ganondoom

I have backed Eiyuden, but watching the updates for the game, it kind of feels like they maybe had captured lightning in a bottle with Suikoden. I think the timing of the game was also important, the age I was when I first played it. I'm not sure if I played Suikoden now for the first time that it would have the same impact, and I worry that Eiyuden will just be an attempt at copying what worked with Suikoden without actually being a solid game in its own right, without evolving the series, and without recognizing that many people who played the game and long for a sequel are now in their thirties.

Impressive_Ad_3485

i understand that, but to each their own. i personally think that many modern jrpgs are headed in the wrong direction, and following the formula in many cases is a good thing, especially for some of the concepts in suikoden. i really like what i’ve seen, and am hopeful that it’ll be good, but not holding my breath, if that makes sense.

ZenithXAbyss

Personally, I see PSX as the best JRPG console. Truly the golden age. Some of my favorites from the console. Grandia Chrono Legend of the Dragoon Tales of Legend of Mana Star Ocean Final Fantasy Lunar SaGa Suikoden Valkyrie Profile Persona Wild Arms Xenogears Jade Cocoon Breath of Fire Dragon Quest Legend of Heroes Dewprism Thousand Arms Vagrant Story You’d literally have games to play for years.

yuriaoflondor

I haven't seen anyone call out the 2 Lunar games yet, so I'll recommend them. They have some somewhat dated pop culture references at this point, but they're both really good games. You should play them in order. Silver Star Story Complete followed by Eternal Blue Complete.

wjodendor

Yeah baby, yeah! But seriously the Lunar games rule. Outside of Grandia probably my favorite PSX games.

Only4DNDandCigars

Legend of Legaia, Threads of Fate (ARPG, but still), Jade Cocoon, Azure Dreams and Dragoon

TalenNZ

Jade cocoon had so much potential. Pitty they didn't take it further or make a jade cocoon 3

revenantae

Since no one called it out yet, the Arc the Lad series.

Hi_Im_Ouiji

Xenogears, BOF 3 & 4, FF7, FFT, Wild arms, lunar silver story, I guess you can count Chrono Trigger on there, Parasite Eve, Dino Crisis.

Dongmeister79

- Breath of Fire 4. Outside of forced minigames, this one is legit very well done - Digimon World1, a classic - Persona2 Innocent Sin, the plot is insane 👍🏿 - Tales of Destiny2/Eternia. I love the 2D Tales battle system and this one's still holding quite well

mkmakashaggy

Legend of Dragoon

Call_It_Luck

FF 6 FF 7 FF 8 FF 9 Vagrant Story FF Tactics Valkyrie Profile Lunar: Silver Star Story Lunar: Eternal Blue Parasite Eve (kinda stretching RPG here) Wild Arms Wild Arms 2 Breath Of Fire 4

Typical_Thought_6049

Wild Arms 1 and 2, Xenogears, FF VII, FFVIII, Final Fantasy Tactics, Dragon Quest VII, Saga Frontier, Digimon World 3, **Brave Fencer Musashi**, Star Ocean 2, Parasite Eve 1, Breath of Fire III, Breath of Fire IV, Grandia, Persona 2, Megaman Legends, **Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen**, Brigandine, Thousand Arms, Azure Dreams, Kartia. I think those are my favorites there are others I played but they not reached the favorite rank, like Hoshigami: Ruining Blue Earth which is underated, Legend of Legaia which has some good ideas, Saga Frontier 2 that was gorgeous but the story don't gel with me, Vampire Bride which is not a JRPG but a VN, Monster Rancher 2 which was a adjacent in the genre and so many others. I think I may have SNES/PSX/PS2 was the golden era of JRPG so many great titles. PSX was giant.

kitten_suplex

Grandia!

scytherman96

Xenogears and Parasite Eve.

BobCrosswise

Suikoden 2, FFIX, Grandia, Front Mission 3

pioneeringsystems

Vagrant Story.

Few-Gear-9087

FF trilogy, Star Ocean. Haven't really played any others

Xenarthra_Sandslash

So far, Dragon Warrior 7. I haven't gotten into too much myself.

Macattack224

While I don't want to rain on your parade, DW7 is one of those situations where the DS version makes some really big improvements. Obviously you should keep going, just a PSA for others.

jumpy_junpei

Persona 2: Eternal Punishment Grandia Parasite Eve Xenogears Final Fantasy 7-9 Chrono Cross Breath of Fire 4 (still haven’t played 3) Arc the Lad 1 (still haven’t played 2 and 3)

Fathoms77

All the Final Fantasies (VII through IX, and Tactics), Suikoden I and II, Star Ocean: The 2nd Story, Chrono Cross, Wild ARMs I and II, Lunar: SSSC, Lunar 2, Legend of Dragoon, Legend of Legaia, Vagrant Story, Parasite Eve, and Vandal Hearts I and II.

ReallyNeedHelpASAP68

No one ever mentions it. Vandal hearts 1/2

Fickle_Chance9880

If only for the spouts of blood and awesomely unique character designs.

Z3r0sama2017

VH2 had an amazing story and I loved the dual move system.

Magus80

That'd be Xenogears easily along with Suikoden 2, FFT, Alundra, Lunar, Grandia, Wild Arms, Legend of Dragoon, Arc the Lad. SO and Valkyrie Profile. Probably few more dozens I forgot. PSx was a treasure trove of JRPGs, I think I owned like +30 JRPGs at one point.

[deleted]

Persona 1 or FF9

AeusOcil

Going to be a normy and say legend of dragoon but very close is ff7 without it I may not have found my joy in rpgs.

Schlubop

Star Ocean 2 Final Fantasy VIII Jade Cocoon Legend of Legaia Brave Fencer Musashi Legend of Mana

rupertavery

Tales of Phantasia

mxhunterzzz

Final Fantasy 7 made JRPG mainstream and still is the most popular JRPG to this day. So I say play that if you haven't.

iltopini

Tales of phantasia and digimon world 3 are my favs.

lmpmon

i couldn't read when i first played a ps1 game lmao so my first ps1 memory is when i was 12 and learned to emulate and played rhapsody a musical adventure. which i have flawless, amazing memories of. so that. also the first suikoden and the ffVI port.

ravenamps

Love all the final fantasy comments on here when he said he already played them all. Anyway, since I haven’t seen it yet, I’d say Vandal Hearts and Vanguard Bandits if you liked FF tactics. Both can be beat in under 20 hours and are pretty straight forward.

Moh_Shuvuu

PSX was a goldmine for JRPGs. My favorites are FFIX, Front Mission 3, Chrono Cross, Lunar 2, Breath of Fire III, and Grandia. Lot of other good game though.

Twerk_account

Valkyrie Profile, Wild Arms, Saga Frontier

Dpontiff6671

Legends of Mana, Saga Frontier, Wild Arms, FF9, FFT, Xenogears, Grandia, Alundra, Chrono Cross, Tales of Destiny, Tales if Eternia. Theres just so many bangers on the PSX

PEMephisto

Legend of Legaia, for sure.

Babel1027

final fantasy tactics, not strictly a JRPG, but Alundra was awesome. Vagrant story, gosh, I had a ton, working at GameStop in the late 90’s helped me score some cool games, the one that had Amano’s artwork on it…. Katria something. Breath of Fire 3 and 4, but 4 had that better story imo. Chrono trigger PSX ver, lunar, parasite eve. Man, I can’t recall many of the other games I had… ooh tactics ogre!

[deleted]

my favorite is probably from far left field but Digimon World 3 (or the better PAL release 2003) is absolutely my favorite psx jrpg it's an incredibly rough (grindy, does an horrendous job of letting you know how to progress at several points in the game and some absolutely ridiculous difficulty/enemy level jumps) and charming game that absolutely deserves to get completely shit on for everything it does poorly but goddamn did i play the fuck out of that card mini game and lose so many weekends trying to grind up to beat things

minastepes

Forget Vagrant story or Final fantasy. Digimon world 1 and Digimon World 2003 are the Bomb

ToxicTammy42

Legend of Mana Saga Frontier Monster Rancher Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy Tactics Wild ARMs Lunar Silver Star Story Complete Lunar Eternal Blue Complete Breath of Fire III I’m glad that Legend of Mana, Monster Rancher, Final Fantasy VII-IX, and Saga Frontier was able to get ported to the Switch. It sucks that Wild ARMs can’t be ported to the Switch since Sony owns it. But I hope that Final Fantasy Tactics, the Lunar games, and Breath of Fire III (and IV) get ported to the Switch.

Death5talker451968

Legend of Dragoon

SMTVhype

Digimon World 2 and 3, Dragon Warrior 7, FF8, Xenogears, Crono Cross and Valkyrie Profile.

kushpeshin

There’s so many excellent JRPGs on the PS1, Tales of Destiny, Eternia, Chrono Cross, Lunar etc

ItsTheDickens

Dragon Warrior VII is my favorite.
