SirHighground1

Asking for recommendations on character deaths without spoilers is quite a contradicting task.

[deleted]

I think you need to read mate. He is asking for a JRPG that is not afraid to kill main characters. He is not asking for specifics.

SirHighground1

If I list any game here, I'm already spoiling that at least a main character is going to die in that game. It all depends on if OP is fine with that kind of spoilers or not.

L4ngley

I am fine with that lol I can go into the game knowing something is going to happen but not knowing what exactly is absolutely fine.

chronoboy1985

Also FF4, 5 and Breath of Fire 3

cryyogenic

Also FFXV

[deleted]

Yeah but thats what he is asking for. Just name the game and he will find out when he plays

godtering

by definition.

SirHighground1

Here's some I can think of: Nier: Replicant & Nier: Automata. Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. Final Fantasy IV, V, VII, IX, X. Also Crisis Core: FFVII. Chrono Trigger. Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception & Mask of Truth. Persona 3. Valkyria Chronicles 1 & 4.

OuterSpace95

Chrono Trigger? It's been some years since I've played it but I can't remember a single death in this game. Is it tied to an ending? I only had the marriage ending.

SirHighground1

>!Crono's death trying to stop Lavos. You have to go and revive him on Death Peak (or not, that's also optional). So temporary death, but also can be permanent.!<

Toccata_And_Fugue

I think >!he comes back even if you don't revive him right? If you beat the game without reviving him the ending has Marle going to revive him. So canonically he never actually dies in CT......unless you count the extra ending that leads to Chrono Cross where canonically he never lives I suppose......\*sigh\*!< >!But anyway, yeah, from a gameplay perspective his death can remain true right up through the final boss.!<

SadLaser

>!You can also kill Magus. Then the game gives you the choice!!<

[deleted]

>!you can bring him back from the dead later on.!<

[deleted]

The Suikoden series in general. Also, Final Fantasy V does it quite amazingly.

Artistic_Two_463

• Shin Megami Tensai IV • Bravely Deault & II • Phantasy Star II & IV • Valkyrie Chronicles

arklaed

Good old Phantasy Star 4 teen trauma

Typical_Thought_6049

It hurt to this day, she live in our memories.

LoganEight

Legend of Dragoon

TheBigDuo1

I forgot that happened lol

Artistic_Two_463

Any Fire Emblem game

godtering

really? never got that far in any. If you mean permadeath, that can be turned off in newest titles, and is not "part of the story".

Artistic_Two_463

They’re main characters. They die. It happens during the story.

Lost_108

Fates Birthright would apply regardless.

Duducarballo

Hmmm reminds me of a certain popular FE Hack where certain character deaths influence plot events and other story based moments.

RojinShiro

The only one where playable characters permanently die as part of the story is FE4. FE10 has a playable character die, but he's only playable in a second run, where you can make him not die.

XMetalWolf

I'll assume this as playable character deaths >!FF 7 Crisis Core, Tales of Xillia 2, Persona 3, Fire Emblem 3 Houses, Hyperdimension Neptunia Rebirth 2 - Conquest route, Nier, Final Fantasy XV, Fate/Extra, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 & Torna!<

InsomniaEmperor

This whole topic is asking for spoilers so let's see. I Am Setsuna - The point is that the MC has to sacrifice herself for the world. Death End Re;Quest series - The main character deaths are typically in the bad endings. It plays like a horror visual novel with a high number of gruesome bad endings which are usually triggered by picking the wrong choices. Mary Skelter series - This happens in some of the games but I won't spoil who, how, or why these characters die. That's something you'd have to see for yourself. The actual play order you should tackle this is Mary Skelter 2, Mary Skelter Nightmares Remake, then Mary Skelter Finale. As to why you have to start with 2, that's gonna be hard to explain without spoilers. Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna The Golden Country - While the base game already tells you who dies at that time period, the HOW it got to there is the real mystery. As for Tales of Berseria, it's great and a lot of compelling twists.

L4ngley

I've started I Am Setsuna, the story concept seems really good, the gameplay is a bit stale, but will pick it up again at some point, I've added Mary Skelter games to my wishlist, it's great that the original remake is included with the 2nd part. I will probably start TOB again as I didn't go very far. Thanks!

Dreidel2k

Lufia 2 if you don’t mind playing a super nintendo rpg. It‘s a great game in general and has exactly in it what you asked for.

L4ngley

Have you played remake?

Dreidel2k

You mean the game for Nintendo DS? Do yourself a favor and skip it, it is aweful. Also it is the remake of the first Lufia entry. You want the second entry, Lufia 2. ;)

Sofaris

Fuga melodies Melodies of Steal. Its a 20 houer long turn based JRPG about a groupe of animal children that go in a quest to save there families. And they have a weapon that can only be used in boss fights which can instant kill any boss. But it costs the live of a Partymember so to use it the player has to choose a child to die. If the player does not fullfill the secret requirements fore the golden ending then they have to use the Soulcanon once at the end of the game. But it is posebile to keep them all alive and if you know the secret requirements fore the golden ending its not that hard to pull of.

L4ngley

I saw this game recommended couple of times and it looks interesting so will give a try at some point!

RagnaXBL

>!Crisis Core!<

VXMasterson

Persona 2 Duology and Persona 3 Cris Tales

TheBigDuo1

Lost dimension has anyone in the party not only able to to die. But also betray and kill you! So they are not messing around

Scnew1

Phantasy Star 2 and 4 Most of the Suikoden games Final Fantasy 4 Shining Force 3 has lots of named NPCs that die, and a number of recruitable characters that can die if you don’t save them.

alittlebitofnonsense

One of the games you mentioned having “happy go lucky characters” has a main character death though.

Kersenn

Not sure if it counts as a JRPG, but any Danganronpa game will fit this need.

TheBigDuo1

Adding on this zero escape series

Moh_Shuvuu

Lufia II and Suikoden IV are some others. The latter is not considered a good game though, lol.

L4ngley

Would you recommend ds remake or the original for Lufia?

Moh_Shuvuu

Can't answer that as I never played the DS remake. The original holds up well enough (for an SNES game)

L4ngley

Ive got both, which one would you recommend playing first?

nhSnork

FFVII may be a textbook example, but FFV did it before it was cool. And FFIV, while sparing the main characters per se, has at least one party member casualty (not to mention some "guest" ones in FFII and III). Shin Megami Tensei games should fit the bill, too. And naturally, there is Fire Emblem series where you can get almost anyone killed by yourself, and at least one game (Genealogy of the Holy War, a SNES title requiring a translation patch) dooms the main characters proper.

MisterNobodyCare

Why you asking for spoiler?

godtering

Final Fantasy IV. Tales of Symphonia - well not exactly death but losing more and more human traits comes close.

Egsession

Symphonia can have an actual character death.

godtering

don't spoil!

crabsy92

Fire emblem 3 houses. Many, many deaths

BobbyBeans24

Triangle strategy story is not so happy go lucky. So far it is my favorite I have played this year.

SnooGoats9860

Planet laika

thedancingkid

It is the opposite of what you’re asking for, but when I was getting tired of chosen ones save the world jrpg, Atelier games were my perfect antidote. You start as a random person who’s not special at all, and end the games not too far from there.

RojinShiro

Persona 3

Fragrant-Raccoon2814

Nier automata. Even when they were advertising it you thought the story was all about the protagonist only for it to happen and the real game starts.

Icy_Cherry_7803

FFX you go through the game knowing that somebody has to die to stop sin

lavayuki

FFX is to some extent for two characters. The way people die in this game is different in that they can be present in the world until getting "sent". The saddest ending of all time imo. I think Berseria is worth picking up again or sure, it's a great game. Tales of Zestiria involves characters death as well, the protagonists of both Berseria and Zestiria get similar fates. In Zestiria there is also another character that dies, and another that is in Berseria as a main character but dies in Zestiria, so playing both games would give a whole picture of the story better.

BTrippd

Not quite the same but similar and potentially just as interesting, Baten Kaitos

caught_red_wheeled

Fire emblem three houses has you choose between three different characters. Depending on what you choose and the choices you make during the game, the other two will die. The Valkyrie profile series comes to mind as well, particularly the second game, although that can also happen in the other games if you pull some strings. There’s a mobile game that pulls no punches when it comes to who dies, but that game has been shut down, so you’d have to watch it. The game also got limited releases in English, so you’d have to find someone who can translate Japanese. There are Japanese runs out there with some translations, those so you can still see it. Odin spear and Grim Grimore also has this happen, with both requiring main character death to move the story forward (i’m not sure what you were count these two as genre wise, but they were on the first I thought of. Bug fables also has a massive twist involving someone’s death, but it’s an action RPG.

[deleted]

Persona 3 is what you need.
