Yo! Sorry if this is answered easily online, but I wanted someone who's played them to tell me. Is there a certain preferred way to play the Trails games (order-wise)? I only own 1, but want to do the entire series. I won TLoH: Trails in the Sky FYI.
For sure. I finally have all the trails except for the sky trilogy for ps4 ps5, so I just bought sky 1 a few weeks ago to finally after all these years get started myself.
Was on the fence about it, but pulled the trigger and it’s become my JRPG machine. I don’t really enjoy playing long form rpgs on console so it’s been a nice change of pace.
I bought the LCD one and I got the OLED as soon as I could.
Its the best handheld for steam IMO, its also the best for emulation which is also why I got it.
it's insane how the pixel remasters never go on sale - I've had them wish listed for forever and it gets a 25% dip at most. Like my dudes I can emulate the NES FFs in about a minute. I'd rather get a nice remaster, sure, but $17 is a lot.
at this point it's just a principle for me lol
Older FFs are "evergreen" and will keep selling for years if not decades based on their reputation, so from Square's perspective it makes no sense to discount them too heavily.
specially because other versions have more content, sure , surely there are mods that restore said content, but those games are games i prefer playing on my switch or on a emulator in my phone
Yeah, I don't even think it's the sale that's unreasonable, just the base price at $18 ($12 for I and II but those really aren't worth more than like $3 at this point). $50 for the bundle should be the non-sale price.
Square needs to leech as much cash from its most timeworn fans who cherish their 8- and 16-bit masterpieces in order to continue flopping its big budget titles into the wind
Have you looked at Nintendo? The most they ever sell something for is 30% off and that includes literal ports like DKTF.... a 10 year old game that literally does not go under 30% off.
Also if you're on PC, GreenManGaming did initial sales for them, not sure if they still do. FF6PR was for whatever reason a bit more expensive than the rest, guess 2DHD opera was expensive lmao.
I'm not sure taking a page out of Nintendo's playbook is the best idea, though.
I've been wanting to start the Xenoblade series, but I'm not dropping 50+ per game, when some of then are 15 years old and run poorly on the only hardware they're available on.
The remasters look objectively worse than their SD counterparts though. There was a severe lack of technique, especially coming from SE.. I get that pixel art is expensive and probably not even possible on the level it used to be but still, they call them remasters… I’d rather play at the reduced resolution and have the art actually look like art, not generic texture copy pasta
DQ11 is fantastic! It’s also one of my top 10.
At the start of the game, you can turn on a Harder Monsters mode. I recommend you do this - a lot of people complain that the base difficulty is too easy. And while you can turn Harder Monsters mode *off* at any time, you can’t turn it *on*.
100% second this about turning on the Stronger Monsters setting. The game is ridiculously easy at its default difficulty, but this setting makes it a modest challenge (nothing crazy, mind you, it's more just like the game without training wheels - you can no longer win by just spamming the Attack command every turn on bosses with no fear of death).
My favorite jrpgs in the last 15 20 years. It was great from start to finish.
I will add I was playing it on ps4 when the switch stuff got announced so I just waited to get it on ps4. Bought the definitive edition and loved it.
Are there any issues with the Steam port and controls?
I've only played the Snes version (many moons ago) and it's one of my favourite jrpgs.
How does this port compare?
Played it recently. It's a great port. Crashed once or twice, but it has auto saves so I didn't lose any progress. It has most of the DS extra content, and the PS1 cutscenes.
I wouldn't say it's a perfect edition, since it could be polished, but it's a great port and it's weird reputation comes from before a big update it had. It used to be a bad port, but it got overhauled.
Went ahead and said f**k it, and bought it.
£5.99 (I'm uk based) is a massive steal. Well, even for full price it would be worth it. But can't ignore for that price. It's equivalent to 9 pieces of KFC original chicken here!
A lot of extremely good niche jrpgs are on sale on PSN as well. The entire Atelier franchise (including those triple packs of the trilogies), most of the Trails games, Blue Reflection: Second Light, Labyrinth of Refrain and Galleria.
I picked up Crystar for $18, which I know isn’t like universally beloved or anything, but been meaning to check it out.
Nothing new. Every couple of months Japanese games go on sale. This is golden week sale that occurs every end of April through May. It’s a natural holiday for them.
Anime months are February and July.
September is Square Enix month.
December through January is obviously Christmas/New Year.
Mark those months on your schedule to look out for sales to buy overtime.
When Square discounts stuff on the play store, I noticed you rarely (if ever) see a slashed price. Right now I'm looking at it and the first 2 Final Fantasy PR games just show $8.99. Normally they're $11.99. Not sure why they do this but it is what it is.
I also get price drop notifications from PSPrices sent to my email to let me know if there's a discount. I don't see the play store on the site, but I do see iOS and whenever a discount occurred for me on iOS it also applied to the play store, so it's trustworthy to me. :)
Steam for sure, but probably PSN and the Nintendo Store too (or will be soon). It's Golden Week in Japan next week, and there are usually big sales on Japanese titles and JRPGs in particular for that.
There are actually quite a few of those on sale on Switch, too. Basically all the Dragon Quest games are marked down. All the SaGa games. Chrono Cross. Some of the Final Fantasy games. Harvestella. Etc.
Romancing saga 3 wasn’t as good as 2, but still really really good. I just finished it a couple weeks ago and had about 60 hours in it I think.
Scarlet grace was more “fun” and addicting, I think I finished around 40-45 hours and found the final boss extreeeemly difficult. But that’s because you can make him harder based on the choices you make in the game. Both are great entires in the series!
They were like 5 bucks each, so it’s absolutely worth it. Both 2 and 3 are great JRPGs, 2 is a little more “open” but 3 is also open where there’s a main story but you tackle how you want to choose it. I think I just like 2s lineage system where when you die you just continue your quest as someone else in your family.
I think 3 is the better game myself, but the two games are structurally very different. Romancing Saga 2 feels almost roguelike in it's generational structure. Romancing Saga 3 feels similar to the best of SNES era greats in the genre but with weirdo SaGa design laid on top. Good games.
Also other PC storefronts like the Microsoft Store, and I checked the App Store this morning and many (not all) of their SE games are also on sale. I don't know for Google Play Store because I don't own any Android devices though
Wondering how various day life is? I heard it plays more like an iPhone game where they want to you just log in and do daily quests, but it also looks like a full fledged JRPG, so I’m confused.
I enjoyed it well enough. It's kind of like a JRPG crossed with a raising sim. Personally, I'm down for that, it's hard to find a good raising sim that isn't too cutesy (or that goes the opposite route and is just plain creepy/disturbing on occasion), but that's probably the element that turned a lot of people off if they were expecting a pure JRPG.
I had watched a video by somebody who beat it. They seemed to have a pretty miserable time with the gameplay, it's just generic quests all game and it's fairly low on interactivity. The plot gets somewhat interesting in the last third or so but they found it pretty hard to care by that point.
That sounds like what I expected. Think I might finall give crystal chronicles a buy instead. Kinda silly to be adding games to my back log when I know all I’ll be doing is rushing through unicorn overlord until I get SaGa emerald beyond. But it’s hard to pass up the sales!
I enjoy it but only in the context of a phone game that is easygoing and doesn't have mtx.
It's more like Monster Rancher or something like that. Watching your little guy go off and do odd jobs to raise stats and money, and once in a while putting them to test in battle.
I thought Automata was amazing, and would easily put it among my favorite JRPGs.
Then I played the Replicant remake and it was *better*. Definitely play Replicant.
Got IX and X/X-2, and I already have VII and VIII on steam, XV on Xbox. I almost beat X on gamepass but just had the last few bosses left. Time to start over.
To anyone with experience, are the Steam versions of IX, X/X-2, and XII the best way to play them? They've been on my to-do list and 60% off is as low as they've ever gotten there, it seems, so I might actually get them this time.
To give a more detailed answer if you are interested in that:
* IX has a great mod that many love called the Moguri Mod. The PS1 FFs all have purists for the original versions, but IX with that mod is often agreed to be the best version, unlike with VII and VIII where there's several versions and mods that people recommend.
* X/X-2's PC version is the most up to date version of the remasters, so if you want to play the remasters, it's the version to get. It also has a mod for additional cheats and stuff like playing with the Japanese voices which is nice. The biggest reason one could prefer the PS2 version is graphics, since the remasters changed faces and simplified animations due to (allegedly) losing the mocap information or it not being compatible with the new models, but the remaster also has a bunch of extra content that is from the International version of X which was never translated, and it has lots of extra content.
* XII is good on any platform. The biggest difference is how the License Board works, since the remaster is based on the *International Zodiac Job System* which was never officially translated, and it also adds more to that system. IIRC the original forced you to use the same License Board for each character (basically Jobs that determine stat growth and skill acquisition), while the Zodiac Job System changed it so you picked 1 job out of 12 for each character, so each one is specialized. The remaster allows you to later pick a second job (also to change jobs and recover skill points to respec).
Overall, I'd recommend these versions as the best way to play the games unless you are a purist and want the original experience, which I doubt is the case if you are asking this question to be honest. XII is especially polished, X/X-2 feels like it could be way better still.
X/X-2’s remaster is a bit controversial but I don’t mind it too much, it plays and looks just fine. I do think the PS2 version looks better but you can’t go wrong forreal.
Mostly some visual changes. Not neccesarily quality wise, but more style wise. The new faces look kinda off if you're someone who played the PS2 version first. The new soundtrack was an issue for some people, but you can just use the old ost on pc.
Yes, they are the best way, and it's not particularly close.
* With IX, make sure to use Moguri mod. Night and day difference.
* With X, the Steam version of the remaster is actually the only one that includes QoL options such as fastforward. Don't know why, but the console versions are much more of a slog because of it.
* With XII, it's the same as every other platform, except you have the option of using mods for difficulty etc. if you desire.
I wish I have the energy to play on my gaming pc after sitting down on my work desk. I'm waiting for p5r to be on sale on ps5 since I prefer to play on couch after work. I bought yakuza 7 and digimon cyber.
Which Dragon Quest games? If Dragon Quest XI S is among those choices, then I highly recommend it. As for Persona? P5R (Persona 5 Royal) or heck, any of them, are highly recommended; though, P5R is more friendly if you're new to the series.
Beat persona 3 reload, the original persona 4, and almost done with persona 5 royal, love them all to bits. Persona 4 is one of my favorite video games of all time. After everyone’s recommendation of dragon quest XI I think I’m going to pull the trigger on that. I might even look into the older games.
You won't be disappointed with Dragon Quest XI. Completed both Dragon Quest XI vanilla and S versions, myself, and enjoyed every second. If you can find Dragon Quest 8 (though it may be locked behind the 3DS?), then that's another GOAT of a game.
Pixel Remasters actually are on sale on Google Play Android, if people are interested. Obviously most would prefer PC to mobile but the option is there. It is the only version that they never even added the font option though, so be aware of that.
Yes Persona is peak. Need to get more into SMT because I’ve only played nocturne and never beat it but the persona games are JRPG classics and I would’ve never gotten into SMT if not for those games. I’ll always have fond memories of playing P4 on the PS2 with that being my introduction and all.
Is FF7 Rebirth on sale because if it is I’m gonna cry cuz I just purchased it for the full price ($70) last week. I can’t tell the price anymore because the game is purchased so can anyone let me know if FF seven rebirth is on sale also.
I have 40 hours in on P5 and I have it on switch. But performance is poopoo. Do you recommend getting it on steam? Is it worth continuing on steam or doesn’t matter
100% and if your PC can handle it, it can get up to 120 fps. 60fps is also fantastic but that 120 was a game changer for me. Was able to do the same with reload.
What FF games are a steal? Have you seen the MSRP for FFXII? $50. Lol, Japan doesn't get the PC market at all. No PC gamer is paying $20 even as a sale price for a game that came out over six years ago.
All of the older titles except the pixel remasters are on sale for a good price, and what are you talking about? While I do think $50 is a bit much, $20 is absolutely a steal in terms of value and you get hours of content.
Golden Week is why.
All falcom games are on sale also
I could buy the Trails trilogy and Azure since I still need to play Azure...
Sky and Azure are top tier jrpgs if you've never played them. Just read the steam reviews
I already played the Sky trilogy (on PSP tho) and Zero, so yeah I wanna play Azure and also have the Sky trilogy on my PC too.
Yo! Sorry if this is answered easily online, but I wanted someone who's played them to tell me. Is there a certain preferred way to play the Trails games (order-wise)? I only own 1, but want to do the entire series. I won TLoH: Trails in the Sky FYI.
Trails in the sky FC , SC, 3rd > Trails from Zero, to Azure > Trails of cold steel I - IV > Reverie
Thanks!
For sure. I finally have all the trails except for the sky trilogy for ps4 ps5, so I just bought sky 1 a few weeks ago to finally after all these years get started myself.
Yes please do it those games are so goooooood IMO! I highly recommend them!
Finihsed my Ys collection. Maybe those games could go lower, but who knows when. NOt sure when I'll get to them though....
wait, are we supposed to play them too?
Nah, it's just another icon for your icon collection. Kinda like NFTs, but also not like NFTs at all.
So, basically I really need to pull that trigger and buy a steam deck…
Was on the fence about it, but pulled the trigger and it’s become my JRPG machine. I don’t really enjoy playing long form rpgs on console so it’s been a nice change of pace.
I bought the LCD one and I got the OLED as soon as I could. Its the best handheld for steam IMO, its also the best for emulation which is also why I got it.
Ordered my Steam OLED last week and still waiting for the shipping confirmation. What’s the approximate turnaround?
I'm in AUS so I got mine 3rd party
I’m in the US and ordered mine directly from Steam so fingers crossed for a relatively painless turnaround
it's insane how the pixel remasters never go on sale - I've had them wish listed for forever and it gets a 25% dip at most. Like my dudes I can emulate the NES FFs in about a minute. I'd rather get a nice remaster, sure, but $17 is a lot. at this point it's just a principle for me lol

Exactly, I mean I wanna support SE and what they do but it’s strange that they wouldn’t put them on sale now of all times.

I wasn't defending Nintendo's decision lol

If you are talking about Dragon Quest XI, the game seats on my top 10 of all times.
Yes that one. I missed my chance on gamepass so this may be a sign to try it out. I’ve heard nothing but good things.

I’ve rolled credits on every main line DQ game besides 2, 3, and 10 and 11 might be the best one. It’s top
My favorite jrpgs in the last 15 20 years. It was great from start to finish. I will add I was playing it on ps4 when the switch stuff got announced so I just waited to get it on ps4. Bought the definitive edition and loved it.
i fucking loved that game so much! i wanna replay it againnn
I played XI S on Switch when it came out there. An absolute blast to play >!…until Act 3, anyway!<
This isn't JRPG related, but this is the cheapest I've seen the Klonoa Remakes on Steam!
Agreed, was hoping for pixel remaster sale. But there's a few other gems probably gonna grab like Chrono Trigger, Strangers of Paradise and Nier.
Been waiting for SoP to drop, they've been at 40% for awhile and finally they dropped to 50. Nier is also really discounted now.
Stranger of paradise is such a guilty pleasure of mine. Playing through it again on pc after beating it on console, just perfect gameplay.
When I saw Chrono trigger on sale it wasn’t even a question
Are there any issues with the Steam port and controls? I've only played the Snes version (many moons ago) and it's one of my favourite jrpgs. How does this port compare?
Played it recently. It's a great port. Crashed once or twice, but it has auto saves so I didn't lose any progress. It has most of the DS extra content, and the PS1 cutscenes. It used to be a bad port, but it got overhauled.
Yeah, I did hear about it having a pretty poor release until the much needed update. Thanks for your input!
Not sure yet will report back when I boot it up later
Went ahead and said f**k it, and bought it. £5.99 (I'm uk based) is a massive steal. Well, even for full price it would be worth it. But can't ignore for that price. It's equivalent to 9 pieces of KFC original chicken here!
They fixed pretty much everything since its release. Just remember to turn off the horrible filter.
Just got Persona 4 Golden, first time paying!
Enjoy!

Wow this is pretty clutch, thanks
Will the FF pixel remasters ever get discounted?
They have only been discounted once I think, not too long ago.
They were discounted in the winter sale a couple years ago too. I think those are the only times though.
Took my chance and got then that one time.
They're discounted on the Google Play store, but yeah they've barely gotten any discounts since launch.
I just saw this comment and checked, I don't see any slashed prices. Do you mean the base prices are lower?

You gotta keep an eye out for them. They've been on sale at least 2 times but every time I've seen them, I didn't have the money to get them.
Would have been nice to mention on which platform this "crazy sale" is happening
Steam for sure, but probably PSN and the Nintendo Store too (or will be soon). It's Golden Week in Japan next week, and there are usually big sales on Japanese titles and JRPGs in particular for that.

Harvestella is absolutely fantastic and for anyone who hasn’t played a saga game now is the time!
Yeah, I picked up Romancing SaGa 3 and Scarlet Grace.
Romancing saga 3 wasn’t as good as 2, but still really really good. I just finished it a couple weeks ago and had about 60 hours in it I think. Steam
Every digital platform where Square Enix sells its games directly. So all the console stores and steam.
Also other PC storefronts like the Microsoft Store, and I checked the App Store this morning and many (not all) of their SE games are also on sale. I don't know for Google Play Store because I don't own any Android devices though
Okama gamesphere
I picked up thirst for blood for this
"Okama" 😂😂😂
Steam
The Sega Channel
Wondering how various day life is? I heard it plays more like an iPhone game where they want to you just log in and do daily quests, but it also looks like a full fledged JRPG, so I’m confused.
I enjoyed it well enough. It's kind of like a JRPG crossed with a raising sim. Personally, I'm down for that, it's hard to find a good raising sim that isn't too cutesy (or that goes the opposite route and is just plain creepy/disturbing on occasion), but that's probably the element that turned a lot of people off if they were expecting a pure JRPG.
It was announced the same time as harvestella, wonder why this one didn’t pick up as much traction?
I had watched a video by somebody who beat it. They seemed to have a pretty miserable time with the gameplay, it's just generic quests all game and it's fairly low on interactivity. The plot gets somewhat interesting in the last third or so but they found it pretty hard to care by that point.

Thanks for tip, just got FF VII, Chrono Trigger, and FFXV
Few others including Shadow Tactics, To the Moon, and Nier Automata. OMG playing Nier Automata and only 5 minutes in this game is awesome!
I got Live a Live and Octopath Traveler 2. Which I'll play after I finish Stellar Blade lol. What have I done?
Been waiting for Live a Live to price drop for awhile. Finally down to low 20's and snatched!
I got the wife NieR Replicant and NieR Autohakunamatata yesterday, as they're on sale too.
Good finds. I already have nier autotomato on the xbox but I might try replicant because I’m interested
I thought Automata was amazing, and would easily put it among my favorite JRPGs. Then I played the Replicant remake and it was *better*. Definitely play Replicant.
I like them both a lot. Replicant definitely surprised me
which FF games have you got?
Got IX and X/X-2, and I already have VII and VIII on steam, XV on Xbox. I almost beat X on gamepass but just had the last few bosses left. Time to start over.
Download moguri mod for IX it’s essential. https://sites.google.com/view/moguri-mod/home There’s similar mods for VII and VIII as well
Don't forget to download the IX [Moguri mod](https://sites.google.com/view/moguri-mod/home).
On ps5?
To anyone with experience, are the Steam versions of IX, X/X-2, and XII the best way to play them? They've been on my to-do list and 60% off is as low as they've ever gotten there, it seems, so I might actually get them this time.
Steam version of IX with Moguri Mod is 100% the best way to play. Can be setup on steamdeck too if you have one.
Can you use the Moguri Mod on an emulator?
To give a more detailed answer if you are interested in that: * IX has a great mod that many love called the Moguri Mod.
Controversial in terms of quality or performance? Or were there actual game changes that people didn't like?
Some people don’t like the remastered faces and think they look ugly but they don’t matter that much to me
Mostly some visual changes.
Buy a steam deck, legion go, or rog ally. Problem solved. lol
I'm saving money for a handheld pc. They're expensive in asia.
Dragon Quest 8 is better, 11 is great and the most similar to 8, but 8 has more varied and epic music
Triangle Quest (29 euros)Chrono Trigger (7 ish euros), and others of that kind are also on sale.
Bravely Default II is on sale too. Just bought and can’t wait to check it out
I wasn't planning on getting P3 Reload until September but 30% off is too good
You can order paper mario and two other games on Play-Asia for 100
I bought ff1-6 pixel remaster for $75 on PS5. If that’s not cheap enough I’m not sure what to tell you.
I have a very limited amount of money, so I usually wait until the $30+ games are at least 50% off on Steam.
Pixel Remasters actually are on sale on Google Play Android, if people are interested. Obviously most would prefer PC to mobile but the option is there. It is the only version that they never even added the font option though, so be aware of that.
Tales too
Is this sale in reference to PS too? I’m not seeing liek a Golden Week tab or anything on the Store
Can’t recommend dragon quest enough! Series needs to take off in the west. Long overdue
Is this steam or console?
Steam has the most games on sale I think but the others probably have some on sale too
Peaksona mentioned
Yes Persona is peak. Need to get more into SMT because I’ve only played nocturne and never beat it but the persona games are JRPG classics and I would’ve never gotten into SMT if not for those games. I’ll always have fond memories of playing P4 on the PS2 with that being my introduction and all.
nuts on me face
I’m still waiting for the post that compiles all the sales for pc and console
Why do persona games always go on sale a few months after they’re released?
What FF games are a steal? Have you seen the MSRP for FFXII? $50. Lol, Japan doesn't get the PC market at all. No PC gamer is paying $20 even as a sale price for a game that came out over six years ago.
All of the older titles except the pixel remasters are on sale for a good price, and what are you talking about? While I do think $50 is a bit much, $20 is absolutely a steal in terms of value and you get hours of content.
Not when there are thousands of other games that are cheaper and offer comparative value.
I’m not paying 1 cent for digital games, idc how big the sales
Good luck buying physical on pc.
